Hello. I just want to ask how severe this problem was because I wasn't aware of it until a random video in TikTok told me to check my disk health with this program called Hard Disk Sentinel. I'm so fucking surprised that my hard disk health is at 9%, and I have a lot of data here. Any tips or suggestions?

My computer's sleep mode is set to one hour and I was defragmenting my hard disk drive, after I woke up, I turned on my computer and Defraggler was at 98% with "15 minutes left" and continued defragmenting where it left off. I've read posts online that shutting down your computer while defragmenting will corrupt your files, but will sleep mode do the same thing? I mean it did continue where it left off, is that good or bad? Will my files be corrupted because of the sleep mode even though it continued where it left off?

So my computer was recently playing up, it has been constantly blue screening after a couple hours of use consistently for the better part of 2 months, I had sent it in for repairs but each time they would send it back and say its fixed when it clearly wasn't as the crashes would continue. anyway, i noticed that the hard drive had been putting out several error messages around the time of the crash and then did nothing more with that information, until today. I figured that a reason that the computer might be BSODing so much because I still had my GTX-960 drivers installed, and those might be conflicting with my newer GTX-1060 drivers, causing problems, however after uninstalling the 960 drivers i went to play a steam game to test if the problem had been resolved, and found that every single one of my games was missing, as they were all installed on the hard drive and not my SSD. the hard drive had been changed to the File System type as "RAW" and I was unable to format the drive or access it. I resorted to deleting the Partition for the drive and recreating it which seems to have fixed the problem, however now the drive is showing up twice, with one constantly having the status as "Formatting" I'm wondering not only is it safe to delete the duplicate hard drive with the formatting status, but also how to go about using the hard drive from here on out. should I replace the drive ASAP, or will it be fine to use for some time now that its back to NTFS. this is how the Computer Management looks like currently, after recreating the HDD Partition, I would appreciate any help anyone can give me. Thanks, Gianni. Update / Edit: the "formatting" drive has now disappeared, and the drive seems to be working again, but I would still appreciate any advice or knowledge on if any of the BSOD problems could be caused by any of the changes I talked about in the original post, as well as any information moving forward on if the drive is safe to use now.

Hello! First post here - I am currently running a small home server alongside a desktop PC. The PC uses an SSD as its main OS drive, but one of the hard drives I use in it as storage has just failed. That's fine, because all the files were backed up to the server, but now I need to replace it and I'm looking to upgrade the server at the same time. I want longevity over speed, ideally! I found a pair of 2TB WD2000FYYZ drives for £55 each - I know they would be fine in the server, but would they be acceptable for use in a PC which gets turned on/off once a day? I also know that they use a shorter-length TLER than desktop drives; is this an issue? (I've considered WD Reds, Greens, Blacks and Blues as well, but these REs seem to be the best value). Thanks!

So the drive on the far left quit and the others are ones I seek to replace it with but I have run into issues. Second to left when I attempt to boot the computer briefly loses power and reboots third to the left I receive a problem where when booting I get a blue screen of death and the one on the right boots straight up to xp and it needs to re register the os and no support so that is impossible

I have a computer from 2011. It is a pretty good computer, but I am worried that the drive may fail soon. Therefore, I would like to have a backup drive for when the drive breaks. I need something for at most $100 USD with 1 terabyte of storage or more. I know very little about this stuff, so please help.

So this may be something that most users would not need, not just because external hard drives exist, but because its not really necessary these days. I work as a DJ for weddings and at a couple of bars and I am in dire need of a fast laptop with expandable memory up to a minimum of 32 GB and room inside for a 5 TB HDD. I realize that the memory is a bit of overkill, but latency can be a problem especially with the program I use (Pioneer Rekordbox) and it easily pegs the CPU on My old Alienware m17 at 100% though it has the space if I use an SSD with 4TB and my two 2 TB Samsung m.2 drives ,unfortunately I am beginning to get very low on space because music video's take up so much space and I am getting concerned with the safety of keeping an SSD nearly full. I prefer to have everything on the laptop combined without external drives because it is faster and less likely to be stolen in the environment I work in. I have thought about building a desktop, but it is a more cumbersome solution as I need to transport it from one location to another 3 days a week. While I have explored many options I was curious as to other solutions I have not considered. I do carry a rack with me on occasions and have considered building into that, but I wouldn't know where to begin for enclosure, protection from the almost daily transport and longevity of use. I am genuinely curious about what the community might think of that I have not.

Hey, I'm just wondering. I made myself a nice PC parts listing, and was interested in getting some decent Christmas deals, so I went looking at my bookmarked listings regarding my parts list. Unfortunately, the one supplier I had for 3TB 7200RPM HDDs no longer has them in stock and may not be restocking them. So, I come here with this question: does drive speed really matter in this scenario? I'm planning to run two larger capacity (3TB for now) hard disk drives on a SATA controller for extra storage. It's more redundant media and data, stuff I really don't need to access too often. Are 7200RPM drives really worth it in that regard? Should I just settle for a pair of 5400RPM drives?

Hi, I would like to ask if these scores on the pictures are good or as expected. The model of the HDD Tested is: "BarraCuda Hard Drive 2 TB ST2000DM006" I ran the benchmark multiple times, I get the same results, Why does it matter: Because I have been experiencing stuttering in games that try to pre-preload data, meaning data from HDD to Ram or real time pop-in games which will always stutter/freeze when loading assets (such as abilities or even booting into the game). How I concluded that the HDD is the culprit? Because I move my game to my SSD and it didnt have any problems as much. Also, when It was on "standby memory" it wouldn't have the problem even if it was located on the HDD (meaning when it was sitting on my ram ready to be fetched it didnt have issues, my ram was okay), with that being said... all games that preload the entire game like abilities, assets and so on (such as Overwatch or Warframe) do not have the issue. One more important thing I should Mention is that I tested 2 HDDs, both had the issue. If these stats are indeed wrong, please let me know if you have anything specific in mind that could be the culprit. PS: I will also include 512k, both 50mb and 1gb tests, please check below, Thanks in advance.

I bought 6 hard disk drives on eBay recently. I also bought a HDD dock so I can verify the integrity of each HDD. The HDD dock came in a poorly-packaged paper wrap, and I demanded the seller for a refund. I tested the HDD dock's electronics, and it worked good. When I verified the integrity of the drives, all but one failed to work. The seller does not accept returns. I am so unlucky.

Hi all, I have a WD My book 4tb drive. Due to recent thunderstorms, the external enclosure doesn't seem to function, the drive is not detecting on any of my devices. I got worried as this is the replacement drive to the original one which died and I already lost all my data once. So I removed the external enclosure as gently as I could (There was some minor damage, nothing openly visible on the outside) and removed the circuit board that converts the drive to external. Then I plugged it directly into my PC and it seems to read. Now my question is, can I continue to use it as an internal drive or should I buy another external enclosure? Will there be any issues if I run it as an internal drive in the long run? Also, no I do not have warranty left on the replacement drive so I cannot take it to the service agents. Any advice for me? Thanks in Advance, Varun

Hey All, To make a long story short, I guess I fucked up while messing with my partitions. Now I wanted to reinstall my OS after copying my personal files from a bootable usb onto an external HDD but also the bootable USB is not able to start up. Is there any way to retrieve my personal files from the HDD that is fucked? Kind regards!

SSDs are slowly taking over the PC storage industry. They've become the default in slim mobile systems and are increasingly working their way into desktops. For some folks, they've replaced portable hard drives, too. The shifting tide is largely driven by the fact that modern solid-state drives have vastly superior performance to their mechanical counterparts. Speed is only one part of the storage equation, though. Reliability is arguably more important for devices tasked with storing precious data. Which brings us to our new poll. Although our endurance experiment showed that modern SSDs can withstand hundreds of terabytes of writes, NAND wear isn't the only thing that causes them to fail. Firmware flaws and other factors can also compromise one's data. Mechanical drives are perhaps more mature on that front, but their underlying technology is inherently more fragile—especially when faced with physical shock. The poll is deliberately limited to two options, but feel free to clarify your choice in the comments below. Now, go vote, and let us know which form of storage you trust more.

Hello LTT Community, I'm new, and I would like some advice on this possibly stupid question haha. So I have had my PC for 2 years, and after 2 years my hard drive has finally died , Oh well. So my storage configuration at the moment is: 1) SSD - Samsung 120GB for OS 2) HDD - 1TB Seagate Barracuda for Programs and Games (This One died) 3) HDD - 1TB Seagate Barracuda for Movies, Photos, Backups Images, etc I have bought a new 1TB WD Blue and my question is: Should I move my other seagate drive which is hardly ever used up (only use it for backing up, has like 150 hours power on) and use it as my drive for programs and games, and use my WD blue for backups etc. (Sounds stupid but no harm in asking).

hey guys, i've been really worried because of one of my HDD "died" aparently randomly, and i putt "died" because from a day to the other it just stopped working and i have over 320gb+ of personal videos, 174 folders of all videos and are very important stuff to me (their not that kind of videos btw) one evening i started the pc up and windows just don't recognize the drive, i tested it on another pc and it does the same thing, the drive has 3 years of usage and it doesn't have the click noise of dead and when i had to copy 2 or 3gb of videos it did it just fine with 20mb/s constantly, i leave you pics to give you guys a rough idea of what's going on

I have all my files stored on an SSD so I recently bought a WD Green to keep all my mass storage files. I installed the HDD easily then went to device manager, and tried to create a new simple volume. I went through all the options then clicked create, I then sat there for about 5 minutes while my computer did nothing but load, then eventually an error came up just saying it had failed. So I decided to restart my computer, on the logging off screen I sat there for about 10 minutes before I had to just hold down the power button. I then turned my PC back on where I sat at the Windows loading screen for about 15 minutes. Again I had to give up and hold down the power button. I unplugged the new HDD then turn back on my computer with only the SSD and my system booted in seconds as expected. So I reinstalled the HDD, went to create a new simple volume again and then I got this terrible screaming and scratching noise from the new HDD, then again it came up with an error. Is this a bad hard drive? I have attached a screen shot below. Also, can anyone explain the unallocated space in the screen shot? Thank you so much! Grant

So I was thinking of buying this lot of hards drives to make coasters from the platters and get the magnets to use for magnetic stuff http://www.ebay.com/itm/Liquidation-Lot-22-3-5-80-GB-Desktop-PC-3-5-HDD-IDE-EIDE-PATA-Hard-Drives-/201314855821?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2edf4ceb8d Just thought I would share this idea

Hey guys so I just remove my old hard disk drive from my old computer that has broke and thrown away( on that HDD I use window 7). Now I use external connector to connect that HDD to my new window 8 Laptop. Once I try to access it, it says "User ************** is denying access to your PC. Contact Owner of media server to allow your PC to access it." thank you guys for helping. I really appreciate it.

So... a Cloud-Storage focused HDD with it's own built-in OS, eliminating the need for [possibly] cumbersome NAS setups. Whether it will out-perform a similarly-priced NAS will remain to be seen though. http://www.kitguru.net/components/hard-drives/anton-shilov/seagate-introduces-kinetic-hdds-with-ethernet-interface/
