HI the purpose of this topic is to collect as many as possible bash improvements and set t ings that live in your bash running config( ~/.bashrc*0 A few rules beforehand: - every thing posted should atleast a description for what it does - and the depencies it may or may not have if they arend part of coreutils and or the posix std. - !!!! NO FUNCTIONS !!! if you want to share a neat function , and its not user specific , you can still post it but make sure it can operate as - a stand alone shell script in /opt/bin/ or /usr/bin/ or allow for dropping in /etc/profile.d or /etc/bash/bashrc.d/ without requiring anyting more than a simple call from bashrc or a source instruction - please also separate the aliasses that are distro specific , into a seperate code block so people can copy whole sections without cluttering their env wit aliases that wont work on their system... - if you do need to store something in the env please try to use a bash array ifits more than a single variable, and prefix the variable with the corename of the thing. - for any code that creates new files on the system a procedure to remove all those files automaticly needs to be included , even as a part of an istaller or part of the make file ... eg -dont assume people have sudo installed just write the thing as if ran by root , if it fails when run as regular user , not a problem but an error complaining about permissions is easier fixed than an error about file not found. ill start of with my discoveries some of them really old : 2004+ some of them only recent additions and i wish i had known since the beginning. (if possible i will correct any mistakes and also try keeping this list up to date with replies) note there is nothing about history control inhere , as i have written a seperate script to deal with bashhistory and logging that. i will post this section on the blog on my profile ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Intro: in bash there are some special variables that are worth knowing about: $$ = the PID of the current instance $_ = the last argument fromp previous comand mkdir -p ~/some/long/complicated/path/ cd $_ $@ stores all arguments passed to a script $? stores the return value of last executed ommand (use this to test if it failed or was success) $PS1 is the prompt that gets printd after each command $COLLUMS stores the width of the curent shell $LINES stores the height section: start of file ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ #!/usr/bin/env bash # ############################################################################ # # REPO: {Gitrepo} AUTHOR: {Author contact info} # # FILE: {intended filename} {last upd/version} # ############################################################################ # # Dont do anything if not interactivel: [[ $- != *i* ]] && return X11 only: # Share X Server With All Users \xhost + > /dev/null 2>&1 Systemd only: # Load Profile Again when chrooting: [[ "$UID" == 0 ]] && $(systemd-detect-virt -r) && source /etc/profile || : extra info : ----------- xhost + : turns of access control to the xserver this is needed for xnest or xephir (2ways to run a desktop inside a window.) detect-virt () : systemd users only: useless for other init systems this systemd-detect-virt -r will exit with code 0 if inside chroot, if we are ,need to also source /etc/profile again section : bash options # Bash won't get SIGWINCH if another process is in the foreground. # Enable checkwinsize so that bash will check the terminal size when # it regains control. #65623 # http://cnswww.cns.cwru.edu/~chet/bash/FAQ (E11) shopt -s checkwinsize # Disable completion when the input buffer is empty. i.e. Hitting tab and waiting a long time for bash to expand all of $PATH. # shopt -s no_empty_cmd_completion # extended globbing shopt -s extglob # expand aliasses shopt -s expand_aliases # enable * wildcard includes .-files (ex: rm ~/tmp/* removes .test and test |fix for .* wich includes ..) shopt -s dotglob # reedit a history substitution line if it failed shopt -s histreedit # edit a recalled history line before executing shopt -s histverify # Enable history appending instead of overwriting. #139609 shopt -s histappend # change to named directory shopt -s autocd # change directory to variables shopt -s cdable_vars # autocorrects cd misspellings shopt -s cdspell # save multi-line commands in history as single line shopt -s cmdhist # no Case globbing **1 shopt -s nocaseglob Section: keybindings : # # PgUp/PgDn go to the beginning/end of the history # # Use the up and down arrow keys for finding a command in history # # (you can write some initial letters of the command first). bind '"\e[A":history-search-backward' bind '"\e[B":history-search-forward' bind '"\e[5~":beginning-of-history' bind '"\e[5~":end-of-history' bind 'set completion-ignore-case on' #[A is up arrow #[B is down arrow #[5~ is pgup #[6~ is pgdn Section : exports : # Default Editor: export EDITOR="/usr/bin/env nvim" # PYTHON export PYTHONPATH="${PYTHONPATH}:${HOME}/Development/Code/Python/" #if any replace this where you store git export PYTHONPATH="${PYTHONPATH}:${HOME}/Development/Code/Python/Projects/" #python code and or homebrew projects Nvidia gfx card owners Only: # NVIDIA ## So I've been poking around Amazon for some movies that I've been looking for movies that I'm wanting to buy and I got to thinking that if I buy all the movies I want with Blu-Ray and then over the next 20 years (at this rate), we will have all the movies I've previously bought on Blu-Ray on UHD. Of course in the following years, 4k tv's will go down in price and become more affordable for the average consumer and then when that happens, you will have all these Blu-Ray movies that won't be able to take full potential of your new 4k tv. Then you would have to go out and buy all your movies that are remastered in 4k/movies that can actually are actually 4k quality if there isn't already a higher movie format already by then. My next thought was about buying all the movies digitally, but then you would have to buy storage for all the movies you download or happen to just stream them online. I don't believe that when you buy movies in a lower resolution, that you would get an updated higher resolution movie for free and then you would have to just go buy your movies digitally again. It's a never ending cycle it seems. I'm sure there would be no reason to buy 8k movies in the future, but I feel like we thought the same way about HD movies when they came out too, or from what I can remember. My thought is to might as well just buy the movies you want right now in Blu-Ray. Not like I'm going to buy a 4k tv anytime soon. What do you guys think? Would you guys buy all the movies you have again in UHD format after already buying them all in Blu-Ray?

DU Recorder app for Android is great. Completely free, no ads and no watermark. But I believe they are doing some shadier stuff. Everytime in unlock my device I see the DU Recorder icon pops for a while in the statusbar also when I am not using the app it just pops randomly in the statusbar. And by sometime I mean every damn time. The notification log shows it's activity. Can anyone please confirm that they are doing anything shady or suggest me something else. Also I tried force stopping the app but it still comes up.

So I love vintage tech, mostly audio and video entertainment. So I was thinking of decorating my office with retro and vintage tech. Things like a cassette deck, turntable, old video game consoles. I was wondering if anyone could reccomend anything to me? Any kinds of interesting tech that really stands out. The idea is to have some birch shelves with led lighting behind them with a sort of pinkish 80's glow. Thanks for any help you can give

Hi all, Just wanted to know, are there many people collecting the old 1990s pc game big boxes? I remember back in the day, when i bought a new game I would proudly display the game boxes around my desk, which looked awesome. I have since thrown many of them out over the years believing they were worthless. Then a month ago i was checking out ebay and stummbled upon many many hundreds of pc big boxes for sale starting at $50 a pop and a few thousand for original doom pc in its box! So my question is how many people out there are collecting these and how much could you sell your best big box pc game for?

He wasn't responding to me in any of his comments. "Won't happen. Why do you think I pick up some many classic games? To have what are new experiences to me for years." (Response to claims that he'll have to become a PC gamer if consoles get discontinued or become all digital.) "Never going to happen." (Response to PCs hooked up to living room TVs, any controller you want to use, nearly unlimited options available where to and how to interface.) "I do not prefer the cold nature of PC gaming. I don't support digital content, and I simply dislike the, shall we say, lack of charm to it. Charm is hard to define exactly. You either get why a console and its library are unique and interesting, or you see it as just more games. I feel the former." (Response to someone claims PC gaming is objectively better) "Let's be real man, no one collects physical PC games. Ultimately, it boils down to preference. I fully acknowledge the positives to it, but they don't outweigh what I consider to be the negatives." (Response to how hard copy discs of PC games are still released to collect.) "It's still digital content. Guys, honestly, this isn't complicated. I quite simply will never be a PC gamer." (Response to GOG being DRM free.) "Me personally, I'll just keep playing classic stuff. As it is, I have more games than I'll realistically be able to play in my lifetime." (Response to what if consoles become digital only.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So he's made up his mind. He will collect and store consoles and their games as long as there are DRM licenses tied to discs and carts. I weighed in. My main argument is that console collecting now takes up a lot of space considering so many games can be stored and played digitally off hard drives. That he should stop collecting starting with 8th gen except for exclusives. If you have to install your XBO and PS4 games off discs it defeats the purpose of console gaming. Optic disc drive serial code DRM isn't safe. "All video games are digital in a way. A Blu Ray contains an ISO and a DRM code to get processed by an optic disc drive. If your optic disc drive stops reading discs you're screwed. If a replacement optic disc drive doesn't match your consoles serial number it won't play game discs; solder while supplies last because the console manufactures don't want it to be easy for you to maintain consoles because they're betting on them breaking so you buy new ones to inflate sales numbers. Decades in the future when we have petabyte memory cubes/crystals most of the original hardware and software will be fragile, deteriorated and like antiques they will only survive in museums on display or in storage not to be played again. The preservation of video games will not come from it's original cartridge and optic disc drive DRM formats, but from data on boundlessly expanding digital storage, backups and transfers to better more secure formats generation after generation. To throw out another retro sci fi movie, look at what happened to those books in The Time Machine (1960). Time Machine - Books If there's DRM free PC games to be had they can be burned onto those same blank Blu Ray discs you've mentioned before. Or how about those external hard drives that you can use with a XBO but can't with a PS4? If you have to install all your PS4 and XBO games to a hard drive like a PC anyway; external on USB or internal, your disc copies of console games are more so a means of distribution as a solution for people with slow internet. So let's say most big PC games, the AAA titles that get advertised you know, aren't DRM free. It's true, Steam has a different version of DRM just like the console discs and consoles themselves do. You can't sell or trade your games like console copies, but you know that's a pretty stupid practise to be participating in anyway especially with Gamestop. With Steam there are emerging ways to share your games BTW. If Steam collapses and PC licenses become void there will be a tremendous piracy backlash. At this point you better believe the future consoles games will be distributed like Netflix to small set top boxes. I think you like collecting hard copies of stuff. It's just more exciting to you. You like the antiquing adventures in second hand stores and finding those rare finds like minded people would care about. An Atari Jaguar game for $100 is only worth $100 to an eccentric collector; the right buyer. You'll set vacations around hitting used game stores. A Steam Sale to you is finding $5 games in a bargain bin, some you know of, some you don't and some you may never play. You're buying them years and years after their marketability has faded away to swoop in and collect what has been discarded; out bidding customer trade-ins even. It's not because of DRM security because optic disc drives don't last forever. You bide your time for fresh dead console used game market to oversaturate with deals rivaling Humble Bundles considering how so many once cost upwards of $50 and $60 new. You're willing to entomb yourself around media that can be carried digitally in the size of a big shoe box. The controllers are worth more than the games if they can be emulated. Ask yourself this : How important is VHS when DVDs exist? How important are DVDs when thousands can be backed up, stored, and transferred on multi terabyte hard drives? Now we have Blu Rays. Sure they're less likely to break like DVDs and CDs before them, but that data can be managed simpler with diversified HD backups."
