Help me install a mATX board in Dell Optiplex 9020 Casing
Lucius_47 posted a topic in Cases and Mods
Hi everyone. I have a Gigabyte B450M S2H V2 board which is mATX. I got a used Dell Optiplex 9020 Tower Casing to save money for other parts. But after I got it home, I realized that the Casing has proprietary connectors for front audio and USB ports. Here is the front panel of the Casing. (Optiplex 9020 has the same front panel and connectors). The two USB 3 ports have a blue connector which, after some modification, fits inside the internal USB 3 header and works fine. The power button connector was also too short, so I had to cut it and extend it to the pow+ and pow- pins on the board. The power button now works fine. There is no reset button on the Casing. However, the other two USB 2 ports and audio ports have a single connector which won't match with anything on the board. The connector also has two wires for an HDD activity LED at the front. This is the pinout diagram I found for this connector. Below are the available headers on the motherboard: Please help me get those two USB 2 ports and audio ports to work. My plan is to use breadboard connectors (shown below) to do it. But I don't know which pins should go where, and I don't want to screw with my new motherboards audio/usb circuits by experimenting. Please also tell me how much these connectors will affect my audio quality and USB speeds. Thanks a lot in advance, any help will be appreciated. -
I am very new to RAID. As far I know RAID 6 can withstand two disk failures at one time. This is what I want. I heard that modern RAID controllers store metadata on the HDD so we can easily replace one controller with another. I need a controller that I can swap easily without loosing data (in case the controller dies). I do not want to match the model etc or be the victim of vendor lock-In (this is the main reason I am considering a custom solution instead of a off the shelf solution). I need 6 x 3.5 SATA hot swappable bays. It needs to have HDD status indicator like PowerEdge server (Ex. amber blinking light that says the HDD need replacement. or, alternating amber AND green to say that the HDD is about to fail) or something like that. The idea is, when I see the indicator, I just replace the HDD and rest is done automatically (rebuild the raid array and stuff like that). The data connection from my PC to the DAS needs to be as fast as possible. I am considering USB 3.1 Gen2 (10 Gbps) or anything faster. I am using Linux, in case this information become relevant at any point. So, my questions are: What casing do I need to use? What RAID controller do I need to use? I am looking for RAID storage (DAS), not NAS. P.S. I am actually willing to consider off the shelf solution if that meet my requirements (can replace the RAID controller, support RAID 6, has 6-bays, has USB 3.1 Gen2, has failing or failed hdd indicator, HDDs are hot swappable).

My younger brother accidentally spilled some hand sanitizer on the side of my casing. It has created a stain on the acrylic glass which I can't remove. Any help? Thanks in advance

As title said. Actually I myself only found out about this casing today...there's only like 2 - 3 reputable review for this casing. And it's quite positive. But all those bigger YouTubers / Tech sites never review it like Gamer Nexus, Hardware Canucks ( Well they do quite decent case reviews ) etc. Honestly I quite like what I'm seeing here. What you guys think ?? I have my eyes set on these few cases. P600S Lian Cool Mesh 2 P500A I think P600S is bit pricey ( least based on my country ). It's about 160$ USD here....though I think it have the best airflow and looks as well. Build quality among all these casing I think it's more or less the same, but P600S just feels more " solid " maybe it's the bulky looks of it. P500A is again also rather pricey, if you go for the RGB version. The fans are loud what I heard from reviews. There's no fan controller either... This case goes for around 130$ here in my country. Then there's Lian Cool Mesh 2, only at around 110$ best deal of all....decent build. RGB version isn't much more expensive either. Cools well. But I don't really like the look of the case...reviews claimed that it's very well build but again, looking at it, it feels flimsy for some reason. Now this Battlecruiser...changes everything...the CHEAPEST one I found it's about 130$ - 140$ depending on which shop I buy from. Aesthetic wise, I definitely prefer this one...the dust filter at the bottom is quite disappointing honestly...since my case be near the wall...so it be a pain to remove every time. But overall the case seems decent, it have what I need. Load of SSD mounts, decent amount of HDD slots. Comes with 4 ARGB fan as well. The cooling is quite decent too... So what you guys think ?? What's your impression of this case at 130 - 140$ USD. Would you go for this or the other 3 I mentioned ? Here's a written review by TechPowerUp https://www.techpowerup.com/review/xpg-battlecruiser-atx-chassis/

I have the Antec nx500 case and I am willing to install 5 cooling fans in the case(3 in the front and 2 in the top). But I can't figure out how to open the front of the case. I also don't want to break my casing by putting excessive force anywhere so I'm asking here if anyone knows how to open it.

Is this within acceptable build quality levels? It is the only part of the monitor like that, the other crevices seem more acceptable, they move a tiny bit but only if I apply moderate pressure. This part even though it looks imperfect does not seem to move at all by pressing on it

Hi guys, I'm actually very new to the PC Building world, and now I'm planning to build a desktop. However, I'm stuck at one of the dumbest section, choosing case and I have stuck at it for like weeks. I wish that someone could save me as looking for a case that suits me by myself is a pain in a ass and I wish that you guys could help me. This is the factors my case needs: Motherboard Compatibility :ATX Side Panel Window :Yes Max CPU Cooler Height Allowance :Over 150mm Max GPU Length Allowance : Over 12.91" / 328.00 mm Fan Options : Front: 3x120mm Top - 3x120mm/2x120mm/3x140mm Rear: 1x120mm/1x140mm Front Panel Window: Yes PSU: ATX12V/ ATX I really need some help from people, best if the case could be under $200SGD, but if it is more, just list the name of it and i will check their prices. I have been researching for weeks and no results, I wish that some experience pc builders will help me out, Thank you.

Hi, I am little confused about the fan air flows of the case like, if I face the fan outside of the case to blow air outside and use a filter, the filter has very tiny holes to push the sir outside, is it really works well? I know about filtering but what kind of filtering is this to push ta air outside with the tiny holes of filter ?

Tricky but fun. I've a phanteks enthoo evolv matx, planning to go full air cooling So, the stock chassis has got a sp200mm and sp140mm fan, my plan is to take on another 2 x af140mm, tricky bit is where to put the AF or SP, so here goes: mockup 1: Design restrictions on the mATX non TG, I stack a sp140mm behind the sp200mm, with an 2 x af140mm exhaust on top and rear, with an optical drive mounted at the back mockup 2: my planned setup, screw the optical drive, 2 intakes 2 exhausts, with 2 SP fans to create positive pressure in front and 2 af fans for exhaust. However, as you can see there is a gap between the filter and the intake sp140mm, will it be better to use the af140 instead to recycle air around, and use the sp140 as the top exhaust that punch through the covered filter? mockup 3: be more creative than phanteks themselves, instead of mounting the optical drive at the slot at the back, swap place with the fan and mount it sideways, each time you want to use it, you swing open the glass cover Sff workstation mainly, not alot of gaming, little oc, should I opt for a blower gtx 1070 for air temps inside chassis? I need inputs, let me know what you guys think yea, cheers

Hi, I need help on choosing case for my M-Atx build. I'm looking for a compact, simple, has front and back fan support, has PSU cover, and all black case with tight budget and found that the Thermaltake Versa H18 suits my budget and my criteria as well. But, is there anyone in here who had bad experience with this case? And if you have a suggestion of other case that suits my criteria, and within the same price range with Thermaltake Versa H18, I'd love to hear it. Thank you.

So I've been using a Corair Air 740 almost a Year now. I'm thinking of switching to a new casing. Problem is I'm having a hard time to find a good casing to proeprly house my system. As you see this is how I set up at the moment. Temps are fine both GPU and CPU ( so far ) but I think it can be better. For now I think there are a lot of heat being trap under the GPU. As I put my hand inside my case I can feel hot air accumilating underneath the GPU while the top part if the case near CPU area is really cool. I've always wonder is it normal for my GPU shroud to be so hot ? I mean it's really hot that I can't even touch it. It actually will burn my finger if I hold it there for too long. I've thought if mounting the Rad on the top front but then all the hot air be dumping directly into my CPU cooler. The best soulution I can think of it's maybe swap out my CPU air cooler for an AIO water one. So I would mount my GPU Rad on the rear as exhaust , and my CPU Rad on top as exhaust as well, the front for Intake. I would still prefer air cooler for my CPU anyone got any good advice where to mount my GPU Rad if so ? And a good casing to go with it.

As title said, I'm looking for a case to replace my current HORRIBLE and regrettable Corsair Carbide 740 Air...but since it's only April 4th...I'm wondering if anyone know if there be even more new casings that's gonna be release this year ?? Since CES is over there aren't many new casing announced during the even either....the current potential case I'm looking at is the CM H500P Mesh and Define R6, still bit unsure about Thermaltake casing...they have large selections, but don't feel confident about them. Or any of you got any good suggestions ?? Even older ones is fine, as long it's good. I'm looking for something similar to either my current Carbide 740R but just not as crappy or the ones I listed R6 / H500P Mesh. The Dark Base 900 seems good but bit pricey...so I don't prioritize that...but it's on my watch list. I wan't something with good air flow, something that can house my rad and possibly rads, I may stick with high end air cooler like D15 I'm still unsure yet on future upgrade. My current setup is CH6 Mobo U14S CPU Cooler VEGA 64 LC HX1000 PSU 2X 3'25" HDD ( More HDD cage is always a pleasure I may want to add more in future ) 1X 2'25" SSD Noctua Fans...lots and lots of fans...so a built in fan header is always a bonus I'm running LED strips via my Mobo so no RGB controller needed or even wanted honestly..it's a waste of space...

Hi. I'm planning to buy a casing but am confused between the Corsair Spec 04 and masterbox lite 5. Can anyone please help me choose one, along with reasons (e.g. temps, air flow, noise, looks etc). I personally prefer the looks of the masterbox lite 5 but I heard that it doesn't have good airflow. My specs are: Core i7 4790k Hyper 212x Sapphire nitro rx 480 4 gb 16 gb ddr3 ram standard A non modular 500W antec psu. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Is anyone else here a console modder? I mean re-casing, LED, fan, adding a LCD or just absolute reforming of the console. Got a old PS2 and a XB360 recently, so decided to have a bit of fun and see what would be fun to do. For the XB360 I know I need to replace the stock cooling to avoid red RROD, but I am thinking a clear case and LED to make it stand out. Might laser etch the case too. The PS2 is still all up in the air since it is the original fat model.
