I have an Ironwolf 4tb in my regular home pc. I choose Ironwolf because it's said to have better reliability than the Barracuda drives. It's not an Ironwolf Pro, but a "regular" Ironwolf. I've read that it's primarly meant to put into a NAS with a RAID controller. Now I have stumbled across an old forum thread from Quora stating that harddrives made for NAS are lacking some built-in features that "regular" harddrives have when it comes to handle suspicious sectors. A regular harddrive would try to read the suspicious sector several times and if successfull reading it will relocate the data to a spare sector, then mark the suspicious sector as perhaps a bad sector or current pending sector. However a NAS harddrive would lack this feature and if it finds a suspicious sector it will directly mark it as bad and not try to retrieve any data there. For that you need the NAS drive in a RAID controller. Now I know how much weird and false info are circulating around the net. But I don't know enough about NAS drives if this is true, and I don't know if my Ironwolf 4tb (ST4000VN006-3CW104) is considired as a NAS drive or just a high-end regular harddrive. I did chat with Seagate's live agents support service but I didn't get a clear answer really... Can anyone of you give a correct answer? For those recommending me to replace it with an SSD instead: Yes I will eventually, whenever I can afford it. The larger SSDs are still much more expensive than harddrives so I'll have to wait until I can. And yes I do make backups of my important stuff. I got my Ironwolf in october last year and so far no errors reported yet.

I have laptop which turns 10 next month. I want to change its HDD 500 Gb to SSD . I asked on Sony Support , but they said " its not recommended to do changes with storage as the company has shut down its operations in India " . He didn't bother to explain the technical reason. Is there really something that I shouldn't change it? Also the HDD has aged 10 years. I checked the disk and I've attached the results from this software. Should I use SSD? Edited: Does anyone know what writing/reading speed would I get in this laptop if I use 550MBPS SSD.

whenever i run any application after windows startup no matter how much time after the startup the disk usage gets to 100% with no actual apps using disk all are around .1 mb/s *it returns to 0-1% after 1-2 mins depending on the app*, if i closed the app and reopened it, it takes like a sec or two to run with no disk usage at all and when i restart the pc and run any app again the same thing happens all over again , this happens with all apps (chrome. leageoflegends, steam, even taskmanager)my pc specscpu ryzen 5 1600rams 16 gb crucial ballistix sport ddr4 2400mobo asus prime b350 plushdd 1tb western digital wd10eurxone last thing , crystaldiskinfo states that i have 1934 reallocated sectors which i had in the first 15gb so i isolated the first 20gb and the rest got no badsectors at allthanks in advance <3

Hi, I am not sure what to do, I ran a chkdsk C: /f /x /r on my 7 months 3TB barracuda, it dismounted it, found a ton of bad clusters however it is taking forever to finish. ETA is 21 hours I suspect because of the message: the disk does not have enough space to replace bad clusters ( picture ) I ran seatools but it cannot see the drive. I am trying to salvage important data off of it but it is inaccessible. Can I just reboot and try to see if I could access the files? or is there a better way may be? Any help is appreciated. Hello Guys, I have an HP External Hard Drive of model PX3100, recently when i tried to open some specific folder or file from the hard drive, for a few minutes Explorer will not respond and the drive will disconnect and reconnect automatically, so i thought of formatting the drive but while taking backup the same things happened like re-connecting with the same specific files and folders, some of the files were rar and iso so i tried to extract/mount then copy from it but no use it stopped in the mid way with an alert message "Either the File is corrupted or missing files" kind of thing. After doing somethings i found out that MFT (Master File Table) is corrupted. So what are the things I've Done. 1. Tried using chkdsk 2. Tried using clean all 3. Tried to repair mbr 4. Tried all those three with Windows installation repair 5. Tried using Third Party Apps for repairing mbr and so END RESULT - Nothing couldn't resolve anything. If you guys know anything it would be helpful, i have spent lot of time and effort resolving this but couldn't, a normal quick surface test by a software took more than 6 hrs then think of how much time it would've taken for chkdsk and clean all commands and repeated for many times. Note: This is the second time some problem arised in this hard drive, already there was a problem and replaced it since i had an warranty. And all this within 2 years. I have another hard drive (Seagate) and I'm using it for more than 5 years, i didn't have any problems since now. Now you might ask why did i even bought from hp, i bought it for an extra offer when i bought a hp laptop. There are lot of weirdness going on hp products and i don't know why. And finally sorry for this long message.

So I bought a Galax Gamer SSD 120GB SATA III Internal solid state recently and it has worked for a couple of days. But soon, it started wearing out. i couldnt figure out what the problem was untill it completely stopped working. I cant see it in my bios and I can only see it in my disk partition options as it is uninitialized and unallocated. It tells me that there are bad sectors. Any idea how to fix it? Or is the only solution to get a new SSD?

Just like the title suggest, I bought one and just slapped it on. I didn't do a full format or check for bad sectors. I am offloading 500 GB right now to it so I can disable one of the HDDs till I find my cases mounting brackets Will it be fine if I run WD Data Lifeguard tools after the fact? If Data is written on bad sectors, will it remove that data? What will it do with bad sectors? the 500 GB I moved over is of little consequence to me btw but I definitely don't want to delete and recopy again unless absolutely necessary

Hello, i have not used or needed hirens boot cd in a year at least. Last time i repaired a dead hard-drive, it was the boot drive (C:) and thus i booted from the drive and used a "dos" looking program to fix or mark bad sectors as unusable, and thus the windows installer could once again find the drive and format it. Does anyone know what program on the disk (or maybe a different place) that can do this on a drive while in windows? of course not fix (c.) while booted in windows. a different drive. If not, i need to find a blank cd so i can burn this =P

Hi Guys, I'm running my home NAS, a Synology DS415+, with 4 x 2TB WD REDs running RAID 5 (with data protection) - yer... its a synology thing. One has been reporting bad sectors for a while now and I was wondering if there is any rule of thumb as to how many bad sectors is acceptable. The drive is seeming working just fine. The error occurs when doing data scrubbing on the volume and the drive will report back with I/O error and bad sectors found. When doing both extended and quick S.M.A.R.T tests the disk will report back succesfully. Everything is back up using symform so I'm not that afraid of data loss, but better safe than sorry, so would it be adviceable to change the disk now or is it perfectly safe to wait on more bad sectors? @Captain_WD

Hear me out had an HDD 2.5 that had some bad sectors verified by Partition Guru and the Hard Disk Sentinel showed it had 55% health .Thus i started repairing it with PartitionGuru and all bad sectors that it had were removed sucefully . However the heatlh of the HDD went from 55% to 4% according to Hard disk sentinel why that happened? Thank you for any info

I purchased a 1tb Samsung 850 pro a few months ago for a new build. Everything was working fine until my computer froze while playing a game. After that incident I got the BSOD in 8.1 and windows was unable to repair the ssd. I ran chkdsk in the command prompt and bad sectors were found. I tried to run SFC/SCANNOW to repair the drive but that didn't help either. I finally got it to boot by reloading windows but everything is so slow to load and freezes constantly it renders the drive unusable. My question is if anybody has had similar problems with this drive?

Question: For the windows power saving features would it be beneficial to have the HDD turn off after a set amount of time or have them running on all the time? My logic is the amount of start stop may affect its life too. I regularly access the hard drive so would it be just better to have it on instead of power or go to sleep state after a set time? Background Info: Any help would be appreciated because my 4 year old Seagate HDD which has logged 1.65 years or 606 days of power on time is getting more bad sectors and its beginning to rapidly occur. I will buy a larger hard drive soon to back up all my data, plus I am no goood at NAS or back up server thing let alone I have the money. Oh yeah the hard drive is 1TB the exact model number is ST31000528AS its up to its 8th bad sector and that was a shorter amount of time period when it went from 6 -> 7 that was about a year worth and now its been less than 4 months. :L
