My Potential Extremely ROUGH Idea: So in a brief nutshell, I have been throwing around an idea I have had for a while now. My idea would be to provide a secure off-site location for people to store there encrypted, password protected off-site drives. I would provide people with the software required to encrypt and password protect either there own drive or I would also offer to provide a drive and the required software to encrypt and password protect there data. All off-site backups would like inside a secure fire proof safe and I would provide a few different teirs for them to choose from. Eventually I would also provide a service that would allow users to have there own dedicated computer that would integrate with a service such as Dropbox, and this would allow the user to backup there Dropbox data automatically to there dedicated server. So this would allow the user the user to backup there data simply and easily "on the fly" so to speak. As I stated above, this would be a VERY small business in the beginning and I currently have NO business plan etc. As I am literally just "airing" my thoughts so to speak. To say this idea is in its infancy is an understatement. I have done no due diligence etc. Or much research to be honest at this point. I recently found a ps3 at a thrift store that was in good condition and I'm looking into transferring my old ps3 to it. I've fitted the new ps3 with an ssd and installed everything I need to make it run. The conundrum I'm having is in regards to data on my old ps3 that can't be replaced (games/patches and dlc that are no longer available on the psn store) and how to safely transfer it. I've got a few questions/methods to go about this so hopefully you can help me. 1. To start off, if I were to just deactivate and reactivate my old ps3, would all the data still be fine even if it can't verify it through the store, or is all of this just tied to my psn account via purchase history or something and all is fine? If the answer is yes, then I could just activate/deactivate my ps3s (every six months) and just use the psn cloud saves to switch between the ps3s to at the very least keep them both backed up to date with save data? 2. Similar to the first question, the game data folder contains game installs and patches if I'm not mistaken. Does the transfer utility copy all of this or will I still have to reinstall games (and somehow find the patch files)? 3. I've used the back up utility to copy data over to the new ps3. It doesn't copy everything (copy-protected save data and the game data folder). I know that digital games and stuff like messages are tied to the psn account, those would have to be redownloaded regardless (without the transfer utility method). Also, are messages even transferrable since both consoles have to be deactivated to set up the transfer utility? Or are messages tied to the psn account and don't need transferring? 4. I would like to avoid the transfer utility because I know it deletes data off the old ps3, and ideally I'd like to keep it untouched incase anything goes wrong with the new ps3. I've backed up all save data (even copy protected) to the psn cloud. If I deactivate my old ps3, activate the new ps3, download all the save data and digital games (everything that wasn't included in the back up utility). That would just leave the game data folder and messages. Assuming I can reinstall the game data and that the messages are tied to the psn account, this method should work right? 5. Am I better off just backing up the old ps3, installing the ssd into the old ps3, and then restoring it, or are there still going to be missing items?

Hi I would like to back up only my C disk that is a different drive without security check Windows 10 image back up doesn't work as it detects malware I know what is causing this but don't want to delete it File history seems to be useless, so i search for something that will allow me to automatically create a image backup on a separate drive

Hello, I have a PC with a lot of photos on it. They are important. I plan on buying an external hard drive and backing everything up. The catch? The PC wasn't on for about a year and a half, since I built my new PC. Also, I was young and dumb, and I am afraid it has a virus/malware on it, lurking. How do I approach this situation? And make sure nothing malicious boards the external hard drive? Thanks!

I need to back up my movie database. I dont need it to be backed up offsite or anythign of the likes, but I do need to back it up locally. What is the best way to back up 10+TB?

I need a way to automate backups. Is there a script or a program that would allow me to plug in an external and have the back up commence?I have been taking my backups more seriously lately, but god knows the others in my family dont.

upgrading from a HDD to an SSD, is there a way to back up and restore my files and settings onto the new SSD like you do with a phone ie besides the hardware change no visible difference (updating drivers and so on aside i presume)

I am looking for buying a external drive for periodic offline back up (plug in bi-weekly or once a month) Should I go for a desktop external beast like a Backup Plus Hub or a HD dock+Internal hard drive? My main concern about the latter is the SATA interface is not designed for plugging and unplugging repeatedly, plus I am worried about storing and handling a bare drive often like that. But I also heard HD manufacturers use lesser drive in their external products. And should I buy a regular HD like Seagate Barracuda/WD Green/Blue or more premium ones like Iron Wolf/ WD red?

I want to put together a new unRAID server, then my current unRAID server would become more of a 'back-up' server. A couple of the things I'm trying to figure out are how to get the back-up server to turn on for a set amount of time per day/week to allow the sync to occur. And what is the best method/software to use for an unRAID to unRAID back-up? I have heard of Syncthing but have never worked with it and wanted to perhaps hear from those who have? I keep seeing titles/descriptions like "325 Watts/650 VA UPS". Here is a list of my components for reference: PC Part Picker I only need the UPS to run for a couple of minutes, enough to do a proper shutdown and avoid damages on micro brownouts.

So how would I go about backing up a server to a whole separate computer on a network?

How long does one hard drive generally can last? 3 years? 5 years? Or? I am asking this question is because the HDDs I am using right now are more than 4 years long. They have been serving me quietly and did not cause me any sort of trouble. But after all these years sometimes I am a little bit worried, that one day one of my drives gonna fail. (Of course that will eventually happen, I just wanna be prepared) When do you guys swap out your harddrives?? And should I sell them and buying new one in order to get some of the money back? Or make some back up and use them until one day they die. How often do you guys change your hard drives? And should I consider Raid ? Coz I do have some personal files (pics and videos and some UE4 project I did a while ago) I do not wanna lose. Thanks.

Hi, I'm wanting to setup some type of backup drive or external drive for my moms computer for christmas. She is a part time book keeper and it is important she doesnt lose data. What im wanting to know, is it better to install another drive in her computer and install software for it. or buy something like a seagate back up thing and use its software. im hoping it can be something i can set up and forget and its automatic. Dont know a who lot about back ups as i usually just wipe my macbook if anything goes wrong. Thanks for any advice.

Hi. I am considering upgrading to Windows 10. I'm gonna wait for a good DirectX 12 game to come out first. I currently have Windows 8.1 installed on my SSD. My question is, should I back up HDD (which I have all my games on) or is it okay if I only back up my SSD?

Hey, I was using my laptop when it suddenly froze, so i left it to see it would unfreeze,it hadnt so I had to turn off my laptop. Trying to restart it, it would not load windows and i would hear my laptop beeping and hear clicking noises, each time i try to load windows it always stops at the windows 8 loading symbol then proceeds to a black screen. I would like to know what i am able to do to fix it, or at least if there is any way to get my data off the drive onto a new one..Your help would be very appreciated and I thank you for taking your time to help me out.

So ive finally decided to start backing up my pc. I have 2 seagate 2tb hdds and 120gb (os) ssd. I have used about 3.5tb on my 2 hdds, considering that its all media which i would like to back up, does it mean that i will have to get another additional 3.5 tb to back it up or do backing up software compress the files so that they can be stored on smaller hdd. i have 1 tb hdd and another 1 tb external hdd lying around which i would like to back up on but considering i have 3.5tb worth of data im guessing its not enough. Sorry if its a massive noob question, first time dealing with backups!

I am going to be building a 2nd PC in the near future that I an going to use for several purposes. One, is it will run all of my servers (minecraft, teamspeak, Filezilla, media streaming etc.), but the main purpose is that I an going to use it to back-up my main PC. What I am trying to figure out is exactly what program I can use to back-up my main PC (over lan). I want a program that will run on the 2nd PC, that can keep multiple regular back ups of the data on my main PC, with the ability to select specifically what files, folders, and drives I want. I want the program to automatically run daily / hourly back ups of all the data I choose from all the drives on my PC. My main PC runs windows 8, and I know that some programs have trouble backing up widows 8. I know Windows 8 has a built in back-up feature, but it doesn't work like I need it to. I will probably run windows 8 on the 2nd PC( I'm not very familiar with linux), but I could run an older version of windows if I have too, but I would prefer something that works on windows 8. I was looking into Windows Home Server 2011, but I think it has compatibility issues with Windows 8. Correct me if I'm wrong. Any help with and/or suggestions for good, reliable, and preferably free programs I could use wold be appreciated. Thanks.
