I feel like people around the world have a right to know that Phanteks will use false and misleading advertising tactics to get sales. They admitted to changing their product page on call and I have the audio recording(legal in Canada) and 3+ different forms of proof of this including the complete web page download, screen recording of the entire page, screenshots of the page, and stuff like tracking number of course (to prove I'm an actual customer if needed). Phanteks NV9 White Case. There was no "what's in the box" so, naturally people assume every part of the case that is in the photos would come in the box right? But no. They don't include the DRBG light strips (which cost like $5 or less for them to produce), but instead expect people to pay $70USD+tax ($150-$190 CAD after taxes and duties/customs fees, no joke) for a light strip that's like less than 2 feet. long. I called and left a voicemail saying that I would have to file a chargeback with my bank if they didn't send me the part that I was expecting to come with the case (since I paid $300 in duties taxes and customs import fees and the case is only worth $450, and they wouldn't refund me those costs). They called me back 10 minutes later saying it's not included, and that I should have checked the 'scope of delivery' section. I stated the fact that there was no such section, he argued with me, refusing to even entertain the idea that I was telling the truth (lying to me), I downloaded the web page immediately at that time and recorded screen recordings and took screenshots, and then I asked him to send me a screenshot of the section of the site that he is referring to (after confirming we were both on the exact same URL web page) and it took him 10-15 minutes to send me this one screenshot. I think everyone knows it doesn't take 10 minutes to send a screenshot. He was stalling so they could change the website. I asked him why it was taking him so long and he said he had to sign into the web portal for the company email. That takes 30 seconds and everyone knows it. Not 10 minutes. The customer service representative would not give me his name or even tell me what his position in the company was, other than "Well I'm answering the phone right now" (Vague and means nothing) I could attach proof but I'm not sure of the legality of that so I can send proof to LTT privately if they want to make a video about it or something lol. Either way I'm just getting this information out there because people need to know that Phanteks will just change their entire website to skirt responsibility if something doesn't match up with what they claim and/or advertise.

One of the reasons why I had been interested in tech and STEM is that I wanted to avoid people as sometimes I found people very difficult to interact with such as my father. Now I'm not sure how to feel about only being a few semesters' worth of classes away from getting a comp sci degree. I know having grown up in a household where there used to be a lot of misdirected anxiety and anger isn't an excuse. But man did I just realize how much weight I have on my shoulders. As of right this moment my only healthy coping mechanism is to write this all down so that I don't forget and leave only the emotions linger. Because every time I only remember emotions is when I am at risk of disassociating. Thank you Linus for providing a safe space for me to express myself.

Never before in my life have I discovered a forum which can give people healthy confidence boosts; I am so happy now that I have discovered this forum to be one of them. As a token of gratitude and in the spirit of moderation, let me share with people here a video by the one and only Kyle Hill on YouTube about the dangers of being overconfident - P.S. pay attention especially to Louis Slotin's story; apparently he's Canadian like Linus too.

Just using Samsung's live chat support but they have a customer privacy policy requiring a contact number and email address??? This sketched me out as if its private I would have thought anomynity would have been most private. I fortuantely did ask the person on the other end this and after almost 5 minutes they did move on. Now the key question is samsung fishing for contacts to spam junk with or is there a mole working at samsung live chat support? Now personally in this modern era where both apple and samsung advertise about privacy, I don't believe they should be asking for this information upfront and especially without hinting towards the idea this is opptional. This is very pushy especially considering the majority of people contacting them may not be as tech-savy as the rest of us here, or even that savy as I know my 80yo gran does use the internet as often as me (even if it may not be for the same things) but she recently she has been looking online for some new devices and being lured into one of these marketing fishing traps I don't personally believe is morally right. I will admit I did give contact info at the end, where they had a proper form WITH A BUTTON TO DENY MARKETING (THEY NEVER ASKED ME ABOUT THIS OPTION ORIGINALLY!!!), but for the reason of I wanted a transcript of the chat for what I originally contacted them about. Sorry this is lengthy and probably wrongly worded. Im techy not literate.

There was a video released recently by Fidra Group on youtube which was directly related to the recent spate of cyber threats in this particular case aimed at Ports across the world where IT and Automation is becoming more and more prominent. The video was aimed at raising awareness of where the weakest links in security on a network is, and It's quite a chilling but true video. and I think it might be worth a watch regardless of if you work at a port or not, but what are your thoughts on it.

#rant #awareness #computers #windows #linux #mac #privacy #longone read this if you respect your own privacy and want to make an informed decision about your data and who see's what you do on your PC Before reading this in case you don't know what open source means: https://opensource.org/osd A few weeks ago I switched to Ubuntu for my daily desktop and laptop OS and I'm very happy with it, does what I need it to do and is very snappy and responsive, I realise that other closed source options have been doing some questionable things to their users privacy and therefore has made me look for an alternative. Windows (10 anyway) All Windows 10 devices report back to Microsoft things like Internet history (Via DNS lookups so incognito does nothing), pointer location, what you click on, what you're watching, what you're reading, what file types you store on your PC, what apps you download (from Microsoft Store only AFAIK), not to mention what you look like in the dark with the use of windows hello and this is sometimes in 3D; the list goes on and is quite frankly troublesome to stop, not impossible but why is it so difficult to stop a 3rd party from having access to your data? The sneaky side of this is that even if you manage to disable all of the snooping telemetry it gets re-enabled after a major Windows update which now thanks to WaaS (Windows as a Service) you can't disable unless you employ a DNS blocking strategy, similar to an adblocker but for the Windows Update servers, or buying an Enterprise/Education license which need volume licensing (non-retail). This is also the ONLY PAID RETAIL OS NOW, Mac stopped charging for their OS's with the release of OS X Mavericks back in 2013 and Linux (With the exception of a few enterprise distrobutions like red hat). Now, don't get me wrong, the data points that are collected are anonymized and not linked to your identity in anyway but with a little digging and enough research into the target I believe this would be possible to link data points and habits to an ID, needless to say I would prefer to have the option to disable ALL tracking with a simple tickbox and for it not to reset when MS decide to roll out a biannual often untested update which in some cases has deleted users files. Needless to say I'm subjective AF on the matter it's really rubbed me up the wrong way. OS X OS X ( pronounced OS Ten incase you didn't know *mindblown*) is "Exclusive" to Apple Mac devices through licensing and installation restriction, it is TECHNICALLY piracy in most parts of the world to install OS X on anything but an authorised Apple device such as a Macbook normal/air/pro, Mac Pro/Mini or an iMac normal/pro all of which are really nicely made machines with gorgeous looks, build quality and functionality (purely subjective ofc) the downside of this is that although mac has a specialplace in my heart they typically have terrible specs when it comes to gpu's and if you want one with a half decent GPU it'll cost you an arm and a leg, this should be improving in the coming years as Apple has started adding eGPU access to it's thunderbolt equiped devices and has also started equiping their high end machines like the mac pro with AMD GPU's as they slowly venture into gaming territory with thier upcoming gaming platform that keeps on being rumoured, their privacy options are great letting you opt out of data collection as part of the setup wizard when you first start a new mac/fresh install of OS X. Long and short OS X is like a controlled linux distrobution with currated apps from a company that has enough shift in the market to get developers on board and paid. Linux, time to spot the difference... Free, Open Source, Doesn't spy on you, if you don't like it... uninstall it INCLUDING THE DEFAULT BROWSER AND EVEN THE DESKTOP, ability to store ANY FOLDER ON THE OS ON A DIFFERENT DRIVE AS PART OF THE INSTALLATION PROCESS!!!, download a pre-made distrobution or if you have the know-how "roll-your-own" (actual terminology from one of the distrobutions) i've seen!, pain in the ass when you aren't used to the command line... oh yeh theres that, because of the variety in the distrobutions there is no clear winner on this front, Ubuntu/Mint great for new users that want a simple and friendly experience Arch/Manjaro great for developers and powerusers Debian great for a coffee machine if you really wanted to make one, along with ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANTED TO DO CAUSE IT'S BASIC AF (minimal install size of debian 9 is ~500Mb) Kali/Parrot Security Industry standard penetration testing tools for hacking testing the security of WiFi/Bluetooth/Storage/WebServers/Routers the list goes on. Basically if you need it there is a distro for it, my partner Kirsty was complaining about not having [ctrl+alt+delete] to close a crashed app I had to explain to her that it's only the app that has crashed so she can just open system monitor from the "start menu" (as to not to confuse her with the lingo, am I right sysadmins?) and I just said linux is open enough that if she just googles the issue or if she wanted to she could just setup her own [ctrl+alt+delete] or whatever key combo she wanted to open the app Just like Windows™. I've lost steam over this now so just to get somebody to try it out, here is acouple of links to get you in the experimenting mood... I know it's probably not the place but if anyone has some change lying around! Me and A group of students at my school are doing a 24-Hour walk/run for charity. We aim to raise money and awareness for Cystic Fibrosis Trust and Down's Syndrome Association. We are doing this for our Citizenship GCSE as we have to do a fundraiser. However we didn't want to do any fundraiser, we chose to do a 24-hour walk/run which is challenging and difficult, staying up and walking day and night. We will be doing the event day and night from June 10th-11th, 4pm-4pm. Please donate anything you have! The more money the charity gets the more lives you are benefiting! (and we also get more marks for different nations donating ) ! Cystic Fibrosis affects millions worldwide, every one in 25 people carry the faulty gene... The company released a special Mech named Sarah's Jenner last month at a price of 10 dollars. Sarah Jenner is the name of a 5 year old girl that recently died from a type of brain cancer. All proceeds will go to the Canadian Cancer Society and as of 8/14 the company has raised $104,000 and will continue raising money until the 23rd. Earlier this month, EA employees raised $18,000 toward AIDS research in which 80 employees took part in a 10k marathon in San Francisco California. I hope to see more efforts like this by game devs in the near future. Video games get a bad reputation in the media fairly frequently so hopefully charitable contributions such as these will help people see gaming in a positive light and potentially make these issues known to people who play the games. You can read the Tom's Hardware article Here.

This is a special sort of news and I decided to post it and share it with you because it is game/social related and the idea struck me as 'crazy' at first but upon further reading I understood why he did it. "...it has made them aware of a conflict that even many adults do not fully understand". "Parents have a responsibility to teach their children the truth" I don't think I would bring my children to see the remnants of war and what it means to real people in the real world up close. However living in oblivion unaware what is happening around the world is not an option for me and will not be for my children. I think watching a documentary on the same would be I would go. That should at least make them aware and more understanding of the real world. And what age is appropriate to try to educate the youth? I think 10/11 might actually be perfect age to do it. Anytime later and they have already learned about guns, sex and rock n' roll from someone/somewhere else. Please, do share your opinion. Kudos to you Carl-Magnus Helgegren!
