Hey guys so out of sort of boredom ive decided i want to make my Lan Rig/HTPC an AMD based system mainly because ive never done an AMD build and also its what i found cheap> I found a AMD 555 BE which i know can be unlocked into a quad core on certain boards and i was wondering if it would work with this board i found which is a Biostar GF8100 M2+ se. i just wanna pair this with my watercooled gtx 480 and thus need this to be able to be unlocked to a quad core to keep up. Hi Ltt forums! I wanted to know which AM2+ processors are the best but 95 watt or under (If you can link me 65 watt, do it! pretty plz) . I also like you to answer these questions: 1.Do AM2 processors work on AM2+ motherboards? 2.Do AM3 processors work on AM2+ motherboards? 3. I know that AM2+ processors work with AM2 motherboards but, Do AM3 processors work on AM2 with the updated BIOS? For number 3. I have seen a lot of controversies saying that yes and saying no. I am really confused. Don't tell me to get a decent PC, I have a decent PC. Just a friend of mine had these questions then I Wondered that too.

Hey guys so with decent LGA 775 boards being kinda rare in my area right now i was thinking of using an AMD board in my budget watercooled Lan rig and i came across a Biostar GF8100 M2+ mobo that comes with: 1x Athlon 64 3000 and an Athlon 64 x2 4800. now since both of these cpu's are dual cores and will hold my watercooled GTX 480 back alot so i was thinking of putting a cheap Phenom II 555BE that i'd unlock to 4 cores but ive no idea if it will work since i really dont know much about AMD. I know that AM2+ allows some AM3 cpu's to work but idk about the 555 specifically but i know the 555 is unlockable to a quad core . Thoughts guys?

This was a quick weekend build with a old HP desktop laying around. Intended as a placeholder google docs machine and future media/network backup machine, as well as a 2nDairy (Secondary) gaming machine for cheap. My laptop is being repaired for several weeks so I need something to transfer written class notes while it's away. CPU $15 Phenom 8650 CPU (used private sale) $40 EVGA GTX 680 SSD (used private sale) $24 PNY 120 Gb SSD (best buy) Thermal Compound (bestbuy) $8 Gas from going everywhere (California, sub $4 per gal) $20 (180 miles/ 40ish per gal [motorcycle lyfe]) Upgraded to win7 from the OG HDD and used the Key to load it onto the new SSD (PNY from bestbuy) That made the biggest immediate difference I haven't seen before today with anything. In Sacramento area, got the 680 & CPU & Case locally used. FB & Craigslist. Both parts within 12 hours from search to purchase. Planning on finding a Phenom II X4 940 to upgrade the bottlenecking 8650 in it rn. Should be roughly $25 used but if I don't well this is perfect as a working office like machine. Currently running my LG 27UK600W (4k monitor I got used for $180) with it just fine for videos and such. I'm happy with how quick and easy this was. You can do it too! I have a couple of old Asus motherboards and wanted to give them the best Processor for socket AM2/AM2+ and was wondering if anyone could help a fella out?

I was wanting to build an older computer just for the nostalgia of it and I came across this motherboard on eBay. Now, I've read two different forums regarding this motherboard with one saying that you can't have a CPU over 45w on this, and the other saying that as long as it's an AM2/+ AM3 CPU, it'll work just fine regardless of the watts. So I'm a bit confused and need a little bit of help with this. The CPU I was wanting to put in it was an AMD Phenom X4 9550 and later, once I get the money, upgrade it for an AMD Phenom II X4 940

Hey guys I am a bit new to the form and pc building! i have been following components and such for almost a year now and have learned a lot! Well what i am here for is help. I am rebuilding an old pc i had in the garage and it does not have a cpu or cooler. I was hoping some parts can be identified and for you to help me pick out a new cpu and heatsink! The board is am2+ and i will be putting in a hd 7770. This is really just meant for cs:go web browsing and light tasks. Looking at some parts I could see they are very outdated and are expensive at that performance. I will be willing to buy a cpu heat sink and even more ram. What does LTT forum think?

My friend is using a very very old PC with this particular motherboard: http://www.gigabyte.pl/products/page/mb/ga-m61sme-s2l_20 The CPU that he's using in that motherboard is an AMD Athlon 3500+ (singlecore) (socket AM2). He wants to upgrade his CPU without replacing the motherboard (too expensive). We noticed that there's a much bigger variety of CPUs that have the AM2+ socket. Will a socket AM2+ CPU work on that motherboard? Or should he buy a socket AM2 CPU instead?

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could find a CPU, quad core preferably, to replace my old Athlon 64 X2 5000B that came in my Optiplex 740. I have searched around and can't find much, since there are no more CPUs that don't have Am3+, which is incompatible with the AM2 socket. I would also prefer if it was an AM2 socket, not AM2+ or AM3, as even though they are compatible, I don't know if they are supported in the BIOS. That's all, thanks for any and all help.

Hi, How much is it worth to upgrade my PC that has an AsRock A770DE+ AM2+ motherboard and 5GB of DDR2 RAM working at 800 MHz for a new motherboard like the Asus M5A97 R2.0 and 8GB of DDR3 working at 1600 or 1866 MHz? My SSD is a bit limited by the SATA II port of the motherboard, some improvements would be noticable when switching to SATA III. Also, I would get USB 3.0 support (I have a 8GB USB3.0 flash drive and no other USB 3.0 device atm). As for the RAM, I would get a bit more memory available (3GB more to be preceise), a bit higher latencies (timings) and a lot faster RAM BUS. But I'm not sure how that would increase performance, since RAM is not a bottleneck for modern CPU-s since the time DDR2 arrived. That upgrade would cost me about 1200 HRK (Croatian Kuna) which is roughly about 200$. How much would my CPU benefit from switching from AM2+ AMD 770/710 to AM3+ AMD 970/950? And what about the benefits for the SSD and RAM? Would it pay off or should I just wait for an upgrade to the whole system in a year-two (ddr4, new platform)? Maybe go for a lower end motherboard like the AsRock 970 Pro3 and the cheapest 8GB ddr3 1600 MHz to minimize costs? As for the other plans, If I would upgrade my MBO and RAM now I would go for a CPU upgrade (AM3+ like the FX 8320) in the near future (maybe a year) but my budget is limited. Thanks.
