I am having some trouble with my first overclocking attempt, for starters here are the specs of my rig. i7 3770K Intel DZ77RE-75K Extreme Motherboard Galaxy GTX 680 32 GB G.Skill Z series RAM Corsair AX 850 Corsair H-70 Corsair Force GT 240 GB SSD I have tried to overclock the CPU using tips I have gained from around the internet but it doesn't seem to be working how I have seen everyone else's working. I have adjusted the multiplier but the bios on this board is very different from the other bios's that I have seen people overclocking on and I am getting a little lost. It seems that sometimes I am able to get the chip to overclock to where I want it but as soon as I stop the stress test it clocks itself back down. I'm not sure if that is normal or if I am doing something wrong. I am using CPU Z to check the clock speed and OCCT as my stress test. Anyone who has experience with this board or can give me any general guidance I would very much appreciate it. Slaqs

I've not been interested in Thunderolt before, but now I have found that you can get one of these running on a PC with it: http://www.google.co.uk/shopping/product/3819332405206747944?q=apple%20monitor%20thunderbolt&hl=en&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.45645796,d.d2k&biw=1920&bih=955&sa=X&ei=vH55UdLNCo6wPLqCgdAJ&ved=0CGwQ8wIwAQ I now am wanting Thunderboard, but I cannot find any X79 motherboards which supports this. Anyone know if there is any X79 motherboards which support Thunderbolt or if there are any coming in the near future?

Hi forums. I am given an assignment in my Business Management class(I currently study EE but my college mandidates this subject for unknown reason). The assignment has me to conduct research on a company, find out it's history and background, also do a S.W.O.T analysis on the company. As the title has shown, I am doing it on AMD. I already have some info due to some internet digging but I still think that I am missing something. So I turned here for suggestion and advice, anything you guys can give me on this topic would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance! p.s. First post since forum engine change, GO LINUS TECH TIPS!!!!

we all know that Intel is gearing up for their upcoming Haswell launch, but what is AMD up to? That is a great question and one that begs to be answered, and it now looks like we have something new to report about. Rumors of a new FX processor that comes banging down the doors at 5.0GHz right out of the box, which at this point would beat anything Intel has to offer, as their top of the line i7 Extreme processor is clocked at 3.9GHz. It does seem as if AMD just may enter the clock speed war again in an effort to keep up with Intel. AMD is rumored to have a new processor code named “Centurion” that is based off the Vishera architecture and will only be available in very limited quantities. Currently AMD’s big dog CPU is the FX 8350 processor is $200 , which is clocked at 4.2GHz and is widely available. The thing is though, that the CPU will be tagged with a higher than usually seen price tag at around $800.00 (<----The price is for the Centurion. i don't know the real price yet) making it the highest priced AMD desktop CPU of all time. Even if Intel is still able to hold its performance crown, it will be great bragging rights by AMD to have the highest clocked CPU in the world.

Hey guys im gonna finally get myself to build a PC to game on. I have a 23 inch 1920x1080 monitor (ips panel) I want to use and I just wanted to hear any suggestions. I am also on a tight budget because I am in tr middle of restoring a car with my dad which is where most of my money has gone to for the past year. I would say 600 to 700 US dollars would be my max. I already have windows and a 500gb WD Blue drive I can use but other then that I need suggestions. I will go AMD or Intel I dont really care I just want the best balenced system I can get. THANKS!

Here is my first attempt at ever creating a truly custom PC. I have built computers in the past but never cared what they looked like. I called this "Project Nighthawk" because I felt this case resembled the F117 Nighthawk fighter plane. Thus why I went with a Black, White and carbon themed build. Let me know what you guys think. Components: Mobo: AsRock Z77-Pro4 CPU: Intel 2570K Overclocked to 4.2Ghz Ram: 16GB G-Skill RipJaw 1333 GPU: 2x AMD 7770 Overclocked Editions in Crossfire Hard Drives: Intel 520 Series 180GB SSD (Boot) Seagate Momentus 750GB Hybrid Drive (Storage) Seagate Barracuda 1TB (Raid 1 backup) PSU: Rocketfish 1000W max (900W constant) 80plus silver modular power supply ROM: LG Blu-ray/DVD/CD Burner Case: Zalman Z11+ HF1 CPU Cooler: Antec Kholer 620 Ram Cooling: Akust Ram Heat Spreaders (Just to match the theme of the build) Case Fans: 3x NZXT 120mm White LED fans. (1 Front Intake, 2 Top Exhaust) 1x NZXT 120mm White fans (H2O cooler) Modifications: Custom White LED light in Power switch Painted all PCI Slot covers White. (Including the ones on the GPU's) Painted all front bay covers white. (Including LG Blu-ray Drive) Painted Hard Drive Toolless retention plate White. Carbon Fiber Vinyl added to Graphics cards, PSU, and CPU Heatsink Individually Sleeved all PSU Cables and Cathode Light. Painted 2.5" Hard Drive sleds and Cathode power inverter black. Carbon Fiber on the graphics cards Some of the custom paint work Replacing the stock RAM heat spreaders with Akust ones to match the build Got rid of the stock red LED in the power switch and added a white one to match the build. Razer Lycosa Keyboard and Logitech MX Performance Mouse both covered in Carbon Fiber to match the build. (Haven't figured out how to switch the back light in the keyboard to white yet)

Razer is a company known for its gaming peripherals and for its ‘cult of Razer’ Branding. It is slightly less well known as a manufacturer of tablets and pc’s. They tested the waters by teasing a new line of product called the switchblade which was a netbook sized ‘gaming’ pc in early 2011. That never actually hit the market but what did was Razer’s Blade notebook that hit shelves in early 2012 and was refreshed in late 2012. Well another refresh was just announced and I am thoroughly impressed. Packed with the latest gen Intel CPU’s and high end 700 series GPU’S from Nvidia it’s sure to be a great performer. That’s all fine and dandy, but why am I so impressed? Well it’s the fact that it’s thinner than Apples MacBook Air. I actually didn't think anything like this was achievable but Razer has engineered a special cooling system to keep the monster well ventilated, after all a laptop is useless if it scalds you when you use it on your lap. It’s 14’’ with a 1600X900 display and weighs 4.1 Lbs. As expected with a notebook this small the storage is completely flash based with the base storage set to be a 128GB Msata ssd which should make windows 8 even snappier. The starting price comes at a premium $1,799 and it is set to be released later in Q2. Here are a full list of system specs taken from Razer, try not to drool too much. Processor Future 4th gen Intel® Core™ processor (formerly codename Haswell) Memory 8GB onboard memory (DDR3L-1600MHz) Graphics and Video NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 765M (2GB GDDR5 VRAM, Optimus™ Technology) Display 14.0" HD+ 16:9 Ratio, 1600x900, with LED backlight Storage 256GB SATA III SSD Power Compact 150W Power Adapter Built-in 70Wh rechargeable lithium-ion polymer battery Communications Killer™ Wireless-N 1202 (802.11a/b/g/n + Bluetooth® 4.0) Size and Weight Width: 13.6” / 345mm Depth: 9.3" / 235mm Height: 0.66"/ 16.8mm Weight: 4.1 lbs / 1.88kg Operating System Windows® 8 (64-Bit)

Anyone think a 4770K would be a bottleneck on duel 4GB 680's with a top tier X87 Asus MB? I know technically there is always a bottleneck but I hope you all understand what I am getting at. Thanks!

Hey, Wasn't too sure, but this seemed like the best place to post this in. I've built my own PC before and it's been working great since then, I've recently been asked to build someone a fairly cheap gaming PC, and wanted some more experienced advice before ordering the parts. Spec: Thanks in advance James

Not sure how many people still actually care about this company's motherboards with brands such as ASUS, Gigabyte and MSI, but they have just unveiled their 8-series motherboards for Haswell processors. Source: http://www.guru3d.com/news_story/ecs_intel_8_series_motherboards.html

Hey there guys. I am getting a new computer and i recently noticed that the RAM i wanted to get (Corsair Dominator) , had 1.65volts and that most other memory has 1.5volts. Will this be an issue with an Intel Ivy Bridge motherboard (ASUS P8Z77 V-LX)? am i better off getting the Corsair Vengeance instead?

I'm not Trying to Impress with this first build, I've learned many things as I've upgraded it along the way and I know I have much to learn still. I'm interested in finding out all the little tips and tricks to make my system look better. I don't have a good camera(resorted to my droid dna's camera), so please forgive that, and also try your best to ignore the speaker sitting on top of the case(it is no longer there). I've removed the case badge since this picture, as it really doesn't fit well. Side panel fans are connected to molex power through the three pin to molex cables that i ran under the optical drive(makes it extremely easy and neat to disconnect the side panel fans when I open it up). I don't know what to do with those godawful looking hd audio and front panel cables to make them less obvious, there isn't enough room to rout them behind the psu, and I don't think they are long enough to rout them all the way around the back. Here is the parts list. Intel i-5 2500k MSI Z77-G45 corsair h-50 corsair gs700 2 Evga 660 ti's(sli) 3tb seagate barracuda 1tb seagate green drive(don't know the name) 500gb(once external)western digital drive Haven't uprgaded the ram yet(just 8GB of cheapo ram I bought),or uprgaded to an ssd(but that is in the works). My future plans to mod the system include dissasembling the optical drive so that I can paint the case of it black. Rerouting all of the cables to make them look better(the cable side looks pretty bad) re-sleaving the Gpu power cables and possibly adding some blue led strips, though without it having a side panel window, it would be kind of useless.

Friends have always told me to stick with AMD cpu's since they are cheaper and that they almost run the same.. But I was just wondering if someone could just tell me the Real differences between AMD Cpu's and Intel Cpu's. Like for example Linus recommends Intel Cpu's but Why? I never understood how people would say that Intel is for REAL GAMING, But when people test them there isn't much of a difference. I don't see that much of a difference between them other than overclocking, and Price. But If anyone out there could just tell me other differences between them, feel free to post them here. Its because I don't know if I should go Intel or stay AMD.

Hello community. I'm having a break from Minecraft to get my first post on this forum. I'm currently upgrading my system, with a fresh build; This is what i have so far; Hyper x beast 2400 16 gb ddr3 ram MSI Z77A-GD65 motherboard NZXT phantom 410SE (black) Sandisk extreme 120 gb(for OS, bringing from the old system) 2x intel 520 series 240gb ssd's (in raid 0 for the games i play the most) 2x Seagate Barracuda 3tb hdd's for media Corsair AX 760W PSU Intel CPU water cooler. What i'm left with is GPU(s) and CPU My plan was to start with a MSI GF GTX 660TI and then later add another 660ti, And for CPU i'm thinking of a Intel I7 3770k. What i wonder is if is it worth the extra money for that i7. I want to overclock the CPU, and i am very much a multitasker, Often having 10 tabs in one browser, and 20+ in another, and a copple of games running( I don't log off minecraft or Lol even if i go to play some bf3 or a total war game. Would it still be worth saving money and insted go for a say, i5 3570k or a i5 2500K (And how is it that the 2500k costs more than the 3570k? Allso, i'm not getting the fps i want out of my system, could i get a lot more from my old(few months old) AMD 7970 GPU card? Please ask if there is something that is unclear. And sorry for my bad English.

EDIT by Linus ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NVIDIA reached out to me about this post and wanted to clarify Tom's statement in the interview a little bit... Here's what they had to say: It seems to us that the forum thread might have been based on a slight misquote. It stated: By the way I want to you to know a thing, since we're working on quality rather than frame rate that's probably one of the major reasons why we're out talking to people at all. And people don't get to really understand it then effectively we're kind of falling behind on the space race for frame rate & that's another major reason why we're talking. The quote can be found at @1:14:00 of :By the way I want you to know one thing, since we're working on quality rather than raw frame rate that's probably one of the major reasons that we're out talking to people at all. Because the thing that I want to make sure doesn't happen is we go off and make our quality experience fantastic, and people don't get to really understand it, then effectively we're kind of falling behind on the space race for raw frame rate & that's another major reason why we're talking.NVIDIA further clarifies: Tom simply said that since NVIDIA is focusing on improving the gaming experience, it is a good idea to make sure that consumers and reviewers understand what it takes to deliver great game play, and how to measure it. In many cases FCAT does do a better job than FRAPS FPS characterizing what gamers see. EDIT by GPUXPert ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATE ! I want to make a few points in response to Nvidia's statement, as an author of this article, a gamer & a PC hardware enthusiast. I want start out by thanking Nvidia for their response &; interaction but I would like to say that I would have preferred if Nvidia made an independent statement rather than tell Linus to make a statement on their behalf. Linus is an independent journalist & a great friend of this community and as such I think that it was inappropriate to let Linus relay Nvidia's message for them. As Linus is not an Nvidia employee It would have been more appropriate to let one of Nvidia's own make a reply or the great Tom Petersen himself comment on his own statements. Moving forward, I want to comment on the content of Nvidia's response in a number of points so please bare with me. The first point that I want to make is that there is absolutely no difference between raw framer ate & frame rate, as frame rate or (frames per second FPS) is a scientific &; factual metric, as such these metrics only exist in a single form & thus they are raw by definition. And for Nvidia to try to insinuate or suggest otherwise (that somehow frame rate & raw frame rate are different) is misleading to our readers. The second point that I want to make is that as a hardcore gamer & graphics enthusiast I found it admirable that Nvidia indulged in self-criticism & acknowledged that there is an area where they may be falling behind and where they can improve, their statement today however is back-peddling from all of that. Back-peddling from self criticism means back-peddling from the acknowledgement of a mistake & the effort to correct it. And that is bad for me & you as consumers because we're the ones that may suffer from it & it's also bad for Nvidia because it means that they're deviating from the path of empowering & innovation driving self-criticism & analysis. -GPUXPert Below is the unaltered original post of this thread: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In light of recent events &; the graphics industry's focus on a new performance metric "frame times or frame latency" spear-headed by Nvidia alongside the traditional metric used to rate graphics cards which is "frames per second or FPS". Nvidia's Tom Petersen was asked in a recent PCPer.com interview why the shift & why now ? Why haven't Nvidia talked about this before? He started out by saying : He then added : So the major reason Nvidia is bringing frame latency to light is because they feel like they're losing the race for FPS or frames per second. You can find the full video , warning ! it's long. UPDATE!! AMD's Roy Taylor VP Global Channel Sales, Technology & Content Strategist. has just tweeted this article twice !! https://twitter.com/amd_roy/status/334817305257209856 https://twitter.com/amd_roy/status/334817393501147136

Hey if you have not seen the build that I was going to make here is an update to the ultimate $3000 build. Click Here: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/14464-the-ultimate-3400-3700-build-soon-help-me-choose-a-name/ This is the build that I will be putting together because I noticed I had no space for a full tower pc. So this pc is meant to be small, but still pack a punch in performance. I am taking up the whole space of case. I am putting a 240 radiator on the top of the case and a 120 radiator on the front of the case where the hard drive cages are. The reservoir in one of the 5.25 Bay and above or below will be a pump. All the fans will be replaced. Two Graphics cards will be water cooled and overclocked so will the cpu probably to 4.6 ghz. This may vary. So now you know what I am going to do for water cooling now to the parts. This is a Corsair build! Pictures soon! Hey guys was wondering what FMB mean't on processors. I noticed that the 4930K has a 2011P FMB and the 4770K has a 2013D FMB. What does this mean? What does it mean for performance, and which one would you pick?

I'm trying to unpark my CPU so then it can use its full power, instead of having a number of the cores/hyper threads are just lazying around. So, in regedit.exe I put in this code '0cc5b647-c1df-4637-891a-dec35c318583', then changed the ValueMax and ValueMin to 0, which suppose to allow me to use all my cores in at any time and with any application. It did sort of work; 4 of them were unparked but the other four were still not enabled. I wasn't sure if it was the hyper threads that could not be unparked or what. Got any ideas on how to get all the cores/hyperthreads running? I have an Intel i7 Q 740M if you do need to know that. I would appreciate the help!

I bought an i5-3570k on the cheapest MSI Z77 motherboard with a GTX 650TI not too long ago (along with an Adata SSD and such) and I really feel like I wasted $750... Anyone feel the same way?

Okay so I have deiced within a weak or two too finally build my new PC. Now the ultimate question... 4770K or 3930K? I would love to have some great answers I know Haswell isn't out and all it is at the moment is what reviewers and intel says but what do you guys think? Also, I saw that 4770K only does 1600Mhz is this true?
