  1. In an interview yesterday with PCGamer AMD's product marketing manager Dev Nekechuk disclosed that AMD is making it a goal to transform itself into a gaming focused company & how they're going to do that is through 4 core ideas (client, content, cloud & console). Client in the form of offering attractive gaming hardware for PC gamers. Console, by providing support in the form of the necessary hardware to push all those much needed giga-flops & software in the form of the company's programming expertise. Here is what Mr. Nekechuk had to say about those two : Content in the form of supporting game developers & improving gameplay & visuals through graphics technology. And here is what he also had to say about content : And finally Cloud by offering a flexible & reliable platform in the form of Radeon Sky. What do you think ? has AMD been successful thus far in those categories ?
  2. Hi all, I've got myself a Sappire 7970 Dual-X OC. It's a great card, a pretty decent overclocker, and it stays pretty cool. I've only got a couple problems with it: It has a custom PCB (read: no full-cover water blocks), and it has an ugly blue PCB. Now, I've pretty much given up on putting this thing under water. I don't want to have to use a universal block and aircool everything but the core itself. Plus, that would show off my 2nd problem: this dang blue PCB. So I was wondering, is there any backplates for this card to hide the PCB that I for some reason haven't found? Or is there anywhere that you know of that I could have one made? Thanks!
  3. This occurred on May 1st after rumors of an intel buyout & official introduction of semi custom chip strategy by AMD https://www.google.com/finance?q=NYSE:AMD
  4. This is going to be a quick review of my experience. Everything about the 2.0 looked good on paper and many YouTube reviews said very good things. However there is a major issue with this product. (This might only apply to the AMD fitment.) Issues: · You have to remove the standard & perfectly good AMD backplate. · Their backplate is made out of plastic containing a lot of regrind, this makes it very soft. · When tightening the screws into the back plate the metal lugs are able to rotate in the backplate causing fitment issues. · The backplate and whole design of the mounting system can’t put enough presser on the CPU to make any decent contact. · The Water block surface itself is not very smooth. · Removing the thing requires you to use a pair of pliers to stop the metal lugs in the backplate rotating. Conclusion: If they had paid a little more attention to the mounting design this would have been a very good product. Bought the H100i and fitted it yesterday (this used the standard AMD backplate) Temps were 60C Lower on idle and 150C on load. Now I can get back to my 5Ghz OC J
  5. This post is a tad long, but it's almost entirely background information. If you don't want to read it all can just skip to the last sentence. The long and short of it is, I am getting some either amazing or very worrying results on my CPU temps right now. I have an AMD FX-8120 overclocked to 4.0 GHz with the stock cooler (yes, I know stock coolers are shit but this one has been okay for a year now). Now that it's getting to be Spring in Western NY again and the average ambient temp around my rig has gone from 18 degrees to anywhere from 18 to 35 degrees I am having some pretty hot temps on my CPU when it's under load. Totally normal, my CPU fan usually ran pretty high in my rig all last summer just because of how hot it was in the weather that it wasn't very effective. This year seemed to be a bit worse though, getting up to full fan speed on mundane tasks on this 18 degree day. I loaded up Core Temp and Prime95 and my rig completely froze up when the temp hit 90 degrees, as was the default set in the core temp settings. I then replaced the stock, extremely dried out thermal paste with some MX-4 to see if that would help or if I would have to lower the clock. Well, interesting tid bit Core Temp actually makes my computer freeze all on it's own now. When Ioaded it up before switching the thermal paste my rig froze for a few seconds while it accessed the MB thermal interfaces, much like it did when I used to use speed fan, but now it never unfreezes. So, to get a good temp reading I googled a bit to find a different tool and found Open hardware monitor. Installed and ran just fine, no freezing at all. Fired up Prime95 and here's where things either get amazing or just wrong. The max temp, after they had pretty much leveled off, that Open Hardware monitor read was 65 degrees. So either 1) Open Hardware monitor is shit and I have no idea what my CPU temps actually are anymore or 2) the MX-4 thermal paste reduced my load temps by a full 25 degrees. I find the latter somewhat hard to believe, can a thermal paste really be that good? Or was it that the old thermal paste was so dried out? Anyway, my question is simply has anyone ever used Open Hardware Monitor before? Can I trust these readings? If they are true, should I go hug every employee at Arctic Cooling or just send along a thank you letter?

  7. Hello! I never seem to be ever 'finished' with a build, but my main machine is at a state where I'm pretty happy with it. So have a look and let me know what you think, or if you have any questions! This is generation 4 of my gaming/performance machine. It wasn't built into what it is now all in one go, it has evolved into this over the last 2 years or so. The last major update was the RAM, the motherboard, the third GPU and moving it all into a new case. Everything else was brought along from previous generations. First, pictures. Below: Closeup of the important bits. See further below for parts list and explanations/excuses. Above: Three ASUS GTX660Tis in SLI. This wasn't planned this way, it just kind of happened that I ended up with three of these (quite excellent) GPUs over time. Obviously the cooling situation is not great. However, it works fairly well thanks to what I call the 'GPU Ram-air duct' included with the HAF X (it's the black squareish thing covering the right end of the GPUs). Inside is a 120mm Cooler Master Scythe fan set to a constant 70% power (anything above that and it starts to get too noisy for me). It forces cool air from the front fan into the open ends of the GPUs. The big 200mm side panel fan also has a duct mounted on it which fits up against the GPUs in the area between the SLI bridge on the left and just before where the GPU power cables are on the right. Between the two, outside air is forced in from the front and side, and a good amount of hot air comes out the vents at the 'back' of the GPU. Ideally, this kind of setup should be only 2-way SLI for proper air cooling, or water cooled to properly cool these particular GPUs in 3-way SLI on this board. With this setup the way it is, in maxed-out-settings gaming the three GPUs tend to level out at around 55-65 C. Serious problems only arise when doing sadistic artificial GPU-melting benchmarks like FurMark. Below: take up ALL the slots! Parts: Cooler Master HAF X Case (USB 3 version) I chose this case because I've had good luck with CM cases before (I have a HAF 922 and HAF 912 also), I liked the top setup for rad mounting and two big 200mm fans on top, proper amount of slots/space for 3 GPUs, all the great airflow features, and it comes with WHEELS! Yes! Loads of detailed pictures here. AMD FX 8350 (OC to 4.4 GHz) I've always been an AMD guy, and had a Phenom II X6-1090T before this. I sat out Bulldozer and figured I'd wait on the next version. When Piledriver appeared with a 4.0GHz base clock, I couldn't resist. It is mildly overclocked to 4.4 GHz using a multiplier of 22, stock bus speed (200) and stock CPU voltage (1.368V in my case.) The only other adjustments were to turn off most of the power saving features and loosen up the VRM power delivery settings to make more power available to the CPU, CPU/NB, NB and DRAM (if needed.) ASUS ROG Crosshair V Formula-Z 990FX motherboard I wanted to give the GPUs as much PCIe goodness as possible, and the ROG boards' thermals and power delivery seem to be about the best there is. I also like the auxiliary power options such as the EZ plug - a 12V molex connector which feeds the PCIe bus extra power if you have more than 2 PCIe cards (esp. GPUs) attached, and a second EATX12V 4-pin CPU connector which helps feed the CPU in more extreme OC situations. Good review of the board here. My favorite little touches are the 'OK' button that undoes what you just tweaked to cause the system to freeze, and the Q-Code LED which shows (in hex code) the steps the CPU and BIOS are going through during startup. A real lifesaver when you've bricked it after your last brilliant attempt. G.Skill RipjawsX X-14900CL9Q-16GBXL 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3-1866 RAM Set to DDR1866 using the BIOS' DOCP tuning feature (sets up the RAM based on its XMP profiles) RAM is fast, works well. Corsair AX860i PSU I should have gone with a slightly bigger PSU. Although it theoretically has enough power output and connectors to feed the 3 GPUs, they had to be carefully connected to the PSU (due to the way the connectors coming from the PSU split into varying numbers of 6/8 pin PCIe connectors...ugh) because when I first set SLI up, when all 3 GPUs suddenly went to max load (ie. starting a run of Unigine Heaven or Valley) the sudden draw would trip the PSU and the whole system would suddenly reboot. The PSU has (I think) six proprietary connectors that comes from the PSU then branches out to two 8/6 pin PCIe power plugs. At first, I had them setup 1-1, or one power supply connection to the two PCIe on . What I ended up doing was taking one connector from the PSU and splitting it across two GPUs until all six GPUs had power. 3x ASUS NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660Ti (TI-DC2O-2GD5) 2GB GPUs At their launch the 660Ti was an amazing price/performance deal. You get a slightly nerfed 670 for a lot less money. I got one, then 8 months later, another. Then I ended up with a third. So, what the hell. Other than the less-than-ideal airflow situation I have, the 3-way SLI setup just screams, and now connected to a 144Hz monitor, they seem even more powerful. Corsair H100i closed-loop liquid CPU cooler Keeps my 8350 and its 4.4 OC at a max of 54C, idling at around 29-31C. 4x Cooler Master MegaFlow 200mm fans (2 on top, 1 front, 1 side) With a top speed of only 800RPM these giants run very quiet at full 12V and nearly silent if they are cranked down a bit. 1x Corsair Air Series AF140 Quiet Edition High Airflow 140mm Fan (case rear) Looked cool? I needed something to fit the case (140mm) and rather than blow air out, it is drawing folw hair in 2x Noctua NF-F12 'Focused Flow' PWM 120mm (H100i radiator) Noctua's flagship 120mm fan, it was designed for use in high-static pressure applications, such as pushing air through CPU coolers and liquid radiators. Nocuta's fans are the best. If they made a 200mm fan I'd replace 2x Feser Xtender 120mm Fan Shrouds (in between the Noctua fans and the H100i rad) (see below) 1x Cooler Master Excalibur PWM 120mm (GPU front-end 'Ram-air' duct) I like Cooler Master's 200mm MegaFlow fans because they're very quiet even at full 12V, and they move a LOT of air. There are two on top drawing air up from the H100i rad and the interior of the case. Note the two clear fan shrouds between the Noctuas and the radiator. I'm a big believer in these spacers since they allow airflow more evenly through the radiator since they get rid of the dead spot next to the fan's hub in the middle. It makes a lot of sense because physics. Check out this article. And this video about the shrouds I have: Kingston HyperX 3K SH103S3 120GB SATA-III SSD (OS) I don't know much about SSDs. This one was cheap, and it seems fast. Western Digital Black WD1002FAEX 1TB SATA-III HD (Steam and other applications) Western Digital Green WD2002EARS 2TB SATA-II HD (Backups and archive) Big fan of WD drives. The Black edition 1TB is a bit noisy, but it's really fast. DarkSide HSL braided power extension cables (6x PCIe, 1x Molex) The cables that come with the AX860i are nice and braided and black and shiny and everything, but they are wicked stiff, and almost all the PCIe connectors are 6/8 pin so it was a god-awful mess getting them routed to the GPUs properly. And the molex plug on the Crosshair V board that feeds extra power to the PCI bus could not be in a worse place to route power (see the picture above). So, I got some nice extension cables from some great local guys at dazmode.com in Mississauga. Peripherals: ASUS VG248QE 24" 144 Hz LCD - Note: THIS IS AN AWESOME MONITOR. THAT IS ALL. NVIDIA 3D Vision 2 Kit (IR emitter and glasses) Logitech G19 keyboard (with Colour LCD) Logitech MX518 mouse (still the best) Logitech F510 game controller Logitech Z323 2.1 speaker system Software: Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium AIDA64 Extreme Edition CorsairLINK2 (AX860i / H100i control and monitoring) The usual CPU/GPU tuning and monitoring utilities (NVIDIA inspector, CPU-Z, GPU-Z, MSI Afterburner, MSI Kombustor, OCCT, CrystalDiskInfo, CrystalDiskMark, CPUID HWMonitor, SpeedFan, AMD Overdrive, Futuremark benchmarks (3DMark, 3DMark 11, 3DMark Vantage, etc.) I mainly use AIDA64 monitoring software. I use it with my Logitech G19's LCD display to keep an eye on things without needing another monitor or ugly overlays. Here's an ugly-but-functional custom display layout I made. The three stacks of readings at the bottom right are the GPUs' TDP%, Core clock MHz, Temperature, and utilization gauge. So, that's Hydra IV at the moment. Any ideas? Questions? Let me know! electrostatic
  8. I have been looking to buy a new graphics card. I wanted a 7970 but i do not know if i should get it because I'm gaming on a 1080P monitor and i heard that the 7950 is more than enough for 1080P. I also watched a video(i forgot where) that said that an nvidia card at 60 fps looks smoother then an Amd card 60 fps. I do not know if this is true but if anyone can verify that it is, then i will be getting a GTX 670. My last question is what brand should i get, MSI, HIS, ASUS, or Sapphire? I want a card with an unlocked multiplier and voltage.
  9. Running 5 GHz performance test 8.0 results :-) CPU Mark 11696 well happy with that! Note: graphics card is not over-clocked
  10. Hi all, I'm looking to build a dirt cheap (£300/$450) gaming rig to see me through the summer (and the Steam summer sale) until I have enough for a full-on water-cooled beast. I'm not bothered about running at crazy high settings, but I do want to be able to play Blood Dragon, Starcraft, Dota 2, and pretty much anything else. Not quite sure the best way to distribute my cash. What do you think? AMD A10-5800k ASRock FM2A55M-DGS or FM2A75M-DGS 8GB of 1600MHz RAM, Vengeance, HyperX or GSkill Ares Corsair Builder 500 (As recommended by Logan) Gigabyte HD 6670 2GB in Crossfire Some random case CPU cooler if I can afford one, (Thermalright True spirit) I have enough storage laying about the house to get something decent As a budget rig goes, what do you think?
  11. Hello, A few weeks ago I've built my own PC, but I have a problem with it, the problem is : when I'm playing games(Guild Wars 2, Skyrim, Natural Selection,...) my PC locks up/freezes. It only happens when I'm playing games! The symptoms are : My screen freezes I DO NOT get a BSOD/Black Screen My mouse/keyboard stop working.(Can't CTRL+ALT+DEL,F4,...) The audio also stops. All the fans/LEDs inside of my case keep spinning when the problem occurs. My PC RARELY restarts on its own.(It only happend twice.) I have to press the reset button to restart my PC. What I have done so far is : I ran Memtest for 7Hrs, it DID NOT find any errors! I ran Furmark, my PC locked up/froze. I went to the store with my GPU so that they would test it, and they've tested it and said that the card is fine! I reinstalled/updated my drivers!(Except for motherboard drivers, I use the drivers that were on the CD) My PC specs : Motherboard: Gigabyte Z77M-D3H CPU : Intel i5-3550 @3.3GHz (NOT OVERCLOCKED) RAM : Corsair Vengeance 2x4GB PSU : OCZ ZS Series 650W HDD : Wester Digital Caviar Green 1Tb GPU : Asus Radeon HD7850 Direct CUII (NOT OVERCLOCKED) (Here's a speccy link : http://imgur.com/LKDOAqn And here are some pictures of my build : http://imgur.com/a/fS6zL ) The temperatures are : CPU Temps. : Idle : 30-32°(Celcius) In-game : 45-51°(Celcius) GPU Temps. : Idle : 26-28°(Celcius) In-game : 46-53°(Celcius) Thank you for reading and trying to help me out! If you need more information please ask me! Thanks! :) EDIT: My +12V rail reads : 12.24V on MAX and 12.024V on LOW. CPUID Hardware Monitor pic : http://i.imgur.com/murZlae.jpg (Important)EDIT : I fixed it! What I did was, I took out my PSU, I opened it and it was stuffed with dust! I cleaned it out, and reseated all my cables and my PC didn't lock up once!
  12. I currently have a AMD radeon 6770 and can run most games on high graphics at about 50 FPS. Is it worth it to upgrade to a 7870? I had this one in mind http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150605 . Also if I do upgrade will I be bottle necked with my current system. Other specs: CPU: AMD FX-6100 3.3.GHz RAM: 8gbs DDR3 1600
  13. I've had a Sapphire 6970 for a couple of years now, and I want to upgrade. I can only fit one GPU in my rig right now because the bottom radiator is too big for an SLI/Crossfire upgrade. So should I get a 660 and overclock it, or would the upgrade be pointless?
  14. Hey all this is the first post on this forum after hearing about it on the live stream so go easy one me. I have decided to purchase the AMD 7870 due to seeing it winning the $200 dollar price point "Video Card Showdown" from the Bioshock Infinite tests. However I am wondering which one of these cards to get as there seems to be a few, and I am not quite sure which one to go for. The only feature that would be a bonus for me would be if the cards are relatively quite, apart from that I'm not overly bothered. I hope someone can help out, as it feels quite overwhelming looking at all these cards, Hazomg
  15. I am building a few $600 gaming computers for my friends and I am not sure what CPU and MB to get. I need a 7870 or greater amd card because I am going to mine out Bitcoins to pay back for the machines. Here are the specs: Video Card: Radeon 7870 Memory: 2x4GB CL9 1600Mhz Storage: WD 1TB Cavear Blue PSU: Corsair Builder 430W Optical Drive: N/A Case: Fractal Design Core 1000 Other Questions: Should I go with an aftermarket cooler? Which One? Should I go Windows 7 or Windows 8?
  16. What is a SAFE overclock for the AMD 7870
  17. New processor time, apparently it offers better performance and better GHz base then the the original ones and also better graphics, while offering a better Bang for buck compared to Intel. Taken off Engadget Although AMD hasn't had much recent success at the higher end of the processor spectrum, it's clear the company is very much interested in attacking the budget realm. Witness its two new lower-tiered FX-series processors: the quad-core FX-4350 and six-core FX-6350 bring noticeable (if modest) improvements over the FX-4300 and FX-6300 chips they effectively replace. Both unlocked CPUs up the base clock speed to 3.9GHz, while the Max Turbo speeds jump to a respective 4.3GHz and 4.2GHz each. The FX-4350 further trumps its ancestor by doubling the Level 3 cache to 8MB, albeit with a higher power draw. More importantly, prices aren't budging much at all in spite of the brisker performance. When the FX-4350 and FX-6350 cost just $122 and $132 each, they're cheap enough that DIY builders shouldn't weep when the bills are due. http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/01/amd-unveils-fx-4350-and-fx-6350-processors/ What have you herd about it? :)
  18. i'm building a new pc. Which CPU should i get? The i5 2500k is about 20 dollars more, so is it worth the extra money?
  19. This was a budget build that took me about a year to do. 20. Slowly overtime I have obtained an increasing pool of money to throw at my system. At the moment it is solely air-cooled, however if I can save enough cash I might invest in a top end water cooling solution. Both GPUs have a core clock of 1Ghz and memory clock of 1.425Ghz The non reference OC card is very quiet and idles 5 degrees above room temp with stock fan profiles while at full load the temp maxs out at 73 degrees Celsius. The reference card will max at 90 degrees at full load and idles at 63 degrees with stock cooling profiles. So unfortunately when I am gaming I manually set the fan speed on the reference card to 55% - 60% (stupidly loud) where is will max at 72 degrees under full load. The configuration I have the cards in crossfire do vary in the pics and that is due to me not being able to afford a display port to DVI adapter as I am now flat broke. Ram is stably clocked at ~1466 mhz (9 9 9 24, 1.52 V) at the moment, could not make it stable above 1700mhz but I didn't really try if I am honest. CPU is stably clocked at 4.525 Ghz (220.75 x 20.5, 1.38V). Extended periods of time at 100% load on all cores using CLC genomics workbench the max temp of the cores is 60 degrees Celsius and idles around 21 degrees with an ambient room temp of ~18 degrees. Now for the pics. I am not really in to the making the system pretty with LEDs or matching colors etc. The pic displaying eyefinity is with Crysis 3 on the screen, the opening scene, that was at the highest settings which was not actually playable. On a single monitor at 1080i with all setting maxed out both my 7970s were at full load and frame rates were typically around 40-60 which is very playable. Now I am going to play some heavily modded Skyrim. Feel free to ask any questions about the build.
  21. Hi forums. I am given an assignment in my Business Management class(I currently study EE but my college mandidates this subject for unknown reason). The assignment has me to conduct research on a company, find out it's history and background, also do a S.W.O.T analysis on the company. As the title has shown, I am doing it on AMD. I already have some info due to some internet digging but I still think that I am missing something. So I turned here for suggestion and advice, anything you guys can give me on this topic would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance! p.s. First post since forum engine change, GO LINUS TECH TIPS!!!!
  22. Hello I am going to tell you some basic facts on what to expect from next generation graphics cards. basic knowledge: All graphics card companies (Nvidia, AMD ext) have set price brackets so no matter what the generation graphics cards will within the same price frame performance will increase only slightly so upgrading every few years will see better performance increase Average performance increase is 12-35% The price brackets are more likely to decrease than increase (This is rare but can happen) Release dates and specs are commonly rumours and expectations (Don't trust them) unless they are officially released by the company (Nvidia, AMD ext) Each generation of graphics cards have some basic standards that have been stuck to (mostly naming/ branding) Nvidia: Enthusiast: Titan = Single GPU (Recent addition to the Nvidia Family, generally the full no BS version of the graphics family) #90 = Duel GPU (Highest priced gpu) (Lowest Price to performance/ Still a good performer though) High end Gaming: #80 = Single GPU (Flag ship model) #70 = Single GPU (Cut down version of the Flag ship model)- Best price to performance (Higher end) Mid - High end gaming: #60 TI = Single GPU (Different GPU(From experience) Flag ship model for lower standards) #60 = Single GPU (Cut down model of the #60 TI) - Best price to performance (Lower end) Lower end gaming: #50 = Single GPU (This is considered to be the budget GPU) AMD: Enthusiast: #990 = Duel GPU (Highest Priced GPU) (Lower Price to performance/ Still a good performer though) High end Gaming: #970 = Single GPU (Flag Ship) #950 = Single GPU (Cut Down version of the Flag ship model) Best price to performance (Higher end) Mid - High end gaming: #870 = Single GPU (Even more cut down version of the flag ship model / Different GPU) #850 = Single GPU (Even more cut down version of the flag ship model / Cut down version of the Different GPU) - Best price to performance (Lower End) Lower end gaming: #770 = Single GPU
  23. i'm building a computer soon, and i was wondering if an fx-8320 would bottleneck a gtx 660. Should i get another CPU instead? Keep in mind i'm on a budget, so i can't go for anything crazy :)
  24. I have a Sapphire AMD 7770 thinking of getting an Asus 7770 video card to use in Crossfire. What is the performance different from single to crossfire is it worth crossfiring?
