Hi. I have notebook Dell Precision 7720 with I7-6820HQ CPU. Also Quadro P3000 GPU. I decided to purchase Egpu and put some more powerfull graphics card in. I bought it in summer and was running Folding@home on it most of a time as a part of LTT team . Now some free time came and i started playing games like RDR 2, GTA5 and mafia Definitive edition. I noticed lof of stutters and performance is not what it should be i think. I tried downloading 3D Mark and run PCIe Throughput test and this is the result : https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/56102742? Isnt it too slow ? It is about 20Gbit which is about half of what should TB3 be capable of. Also i am running external monitor to not limit my connection with that. At thoose games it runs around 25-30 FPS 4K no matter what level of detail (Difference between ultra and low is maybe 5-10FPS) In shadow of tomb raider even less but that was probably cpu problem (99% all the time)

Hello, Long time viewer, seldom poster. I was very inspired by Linus’ home desktop in a server cabinet. My SO and I thought it would be a great way to consolidate our gaming builds and network equipment. I’ve been looking into 4U sized server chassis for a gaming computer. I know Linus had his specially made so I wasn’t sure what would be a cheaper pre-fabricated option. I was looking at some from iStarUSA (around $200 which seems reasonable). I was wondering if anyone could lend some advice regarding building in a server chassis and what size works best (4U?). I’ve been looking at a 22U sized server cabinet. My biggest concern which Linus mentioned too is the cord pass through. I have a basement closet that I’d like to keep the server rack in and route the cables to the other room for Monitor and peripherals. It seems Thunderbolt 3 maybe the best option and use a thunderbolt dock (even though the docks are pricey). How long can a thunderbolt 3 cable be? Should I just get a longer DisplayPort Cable? I’m thinking I may need at least 2 meters and possibly more for a 2nd setup a little farther away. I have a 1440p 144Hz monitor and it theoretically looks like it should run off TB3. However, I’m concerned about that too if I even wanted to add a 1080p monitor or upgrade to one 4K monitor at 120Hz Budget (including currency): $2000 (one system plus $300 for server rack) Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming, Lightroom, InDesign, Illustrator Planned Parts: CPU: Ryzen 3600x or 3700x MB: ASRock X570 PHANTOM GAMING-ITX/TB3 Mini ITX AM4 Motherboard GPU: RTX 3070 or Navi equivalent

I've been thinking about creating my own egpu enclosure to get some more performance out of my laptop and the only pci-e to TB3 I can find is this super expensive adtlink adapter (about 150). I was wondering if anyones gone through this and could reccoment a cheaper alternative/give advise on the ease of use of the bracket. I also would appreciate if anyone knows of a m.t to tb3 adapter i can use to maybe get an m.2 board and attach the adapter. Many thanks. [11:48 PM]

I’m planning on building a Pop! OS Linux desktop to pair with my Mac Mini M1. The Mac sits on top of the desk, acting as the primary daily-driver and light-duty device. It’ll be connected to a couple of displays, and a mixture of daily-use and gaming peripherals. The Linux system, which I plan on effectively building inside of one of the desk drawers and liquid cooling out of a nearby window or something, is meant to pair with the Mac as a separate processing device, and is meant to be the grunt behind the work I do on the Mac Mini. However, I do not want to switch between these two systems, I just want to work through the Mac Mini. For example, to play games, I want to be able to open an icon on the Mac’s application bar, and it opens Steam on the Linux machine, and routes the video through the Mac and the display attached to it. I’d like to be able to put something together in Blender, then have the files sent to the Linux machine for rendering, with the final result coming back to the Mac Mini for viewing and/or further editing. If possible, I’d like to have full control of the system through the Mac, including power on/off, sleep/wake, and updates. Ideally, the only hardware video output for the Linux system will be for a small monitor showing diagnostic data. What would be the best way to go about this? Are there any apps that I should install on one or both systems? Should the Linux system be run through a hyper visor? Is there a way to be able to open up the drives connected to the Linux system in Finder and interact with them? I know that networking over Thunderbolt is an option through SSH or something, which might solve some of these questions, but— and I don’t know if this is a thing— I’d like something more… direct. Something that utilises the full 40Gb speed of the Thunderbolt connection, instead of just a 10Gb network passthrough. Budget (including currency): US$2,048 (Including custom liquid cooling) Country: North America. Probably. Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Games: City Skylines, Euro Truck SIM 2, Assetto Corsa, Left 4 Dead 2, Don’t Starve Together, FTL. Applications: Blender (rendering), Photoshop (rendering), CAD, code compilation. Other details M1 Mac Mini Two displays connected over a Thunderbolt hub in the first port. Second Thunderbolt port connected to Linux system’s Thunderbolt Port. Running MacOS Ventura Linux System [planned, second draft] Running Pop! OS CPU: Ryzen 5700G Graphics: Ryzen 5700G RAM: 32GB of Corsair DDR4, 3200MHz Networking: 2.5Gb Ethernet to internet, pass through to Thunderbolt 4 Bridge for the Mac Mini, ideally. I recently received a Dell WD19TB docking station. When I plugged it in to my Dell G7 17 7790 I got a BIOS warning that I was plugging in a power supply to a port that doesn't support charging. I click continue to bypass this and it boots just fine. I installed all the updated drivers and software that were suggested and even updated the firmware. (Note: it told me it couldn't update the firmware of my docking station but it did anyway). The docking station seems to work fine with the power adapter to it plugged in. If I unplug the power adapter the docking station stops working. I don't see any way to disable the power delivery either in BIOS or the software and drivers provided. However, I did find out that this particular docking station provides 130w of power through it's power delivery. This is not enough to charge my laptop as it requires 180w of power. I'm running it with both the laptop's power adapter plugged in and the docking station's power adapter plugged in. So far, so good. I'm not sure if I'm damaging anything over time or not. However, my feeling is that if I were going to 'fry' something it would've happened the moment I plugged it in and turned it on. Is this not true? Am I slowly damaging my laptop and not knowing it?

I've had an Aorus 1080 gaming box for the past year, and originally had a lot of trouble setting it up, but after installing the thunderbolt software and controller it was more or less working. However, many times it just would not connect to my computer and many times it was just unreliable. Now, it just straight up does not connect, and has not for the past 4 days. I have it connected to a Dell XPS 13 9370 with PCIe 4x and an i7 processor. What I first tried is updating all the drivers, but it says they are all up to date. I don't know what this means, but it says "15d2" for the version. When I go into device manager, the thunderbolt controller gives me the error code 10, saying that the drivers are not updated, but when I go to update, it says it is fully updated. When I plug the thunderbolt cable into my computer it starts charging. I also know that my computer detects a thunderbolt dock is there, but from there it doesn't know what to do. Can anyone help me with this? I am feeling incredibly frustrated searching Dell's support page. Thanks!

Are there any thunderbolt 3 enclosures for windows that are cheap? should I even bother? Dont know if there's a better place to put this, just wondering if there's any point in investing in eGPU enclosures and whether its financially viable. I've been researching it a little bit but I figure this is the forum to find this stuff out.

So the new LG UltraFine 27 uses Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C port) as an input, is there a way to drive this display using a graphic card like the GTX 1080 which uses DisplayPort as an output, maybe some kind of adapter? I know that displayport can handle 5k@60 Hz so in theory it should work.

Anyone using monitors with USB-C or Thunderbolt3? Have you had any problems with the monitors? Have any other computers connected to it? Anyone have one with KVM capabilities? Any other cons to consider? I am looking to replace my last two monitors to replace with an ultrawide or maybe a 4k monitor.

Hi, Linus and community. I have a question, ever sins thunderbolt 3 hit the market i was just to late to catch on the band wagon. I want to know becuase I dont want to dish out more money for a new laptop. I got last year a Asus Rog G751jy laptop. Btw very happy with the rig. But now i see you can upgrade your GPU with external devices. I am keen and intrested. But my laptop has tunderbolt 2 port and does not support thunderbolt 3 devices due to the cable will not fit. My brain storm is aiming at backwards compatibility devices or adapters to lets say connect a 1080 card inside of a razer core to my laptop that has a thunderbolt2 mini display port. What options do i have here? Please look into this and do some testing to maybe open a new can of worms... Thanks

Armed with the list from this great thread below as a starting point, I'm trying to find a 4k monitor which has some specific requirements. It's been a long time since I found researching a product so exhausting and time consuming. Getting good information about specs from the online stores is hard; they are very inconsistent how or if they present this information. I've got two Macs in daily use. One is my programming machine, supplied by work. It's a 2017 15" MacBook Pro (i.e. thunderbolt 3, shitty keyboard). The second machine is my music production computer. It's a 2013 15" MBP, and I love it. It basically functions as a desktop nowadays, connected to all my music equipment and an ageing second monitor. I want to connect both it and the programming computer to a new display, because I've found that increasingly when I use the 2017 MacBook at home (I work a fair bit from home), I'm setting it up on my desk so I can plug an external keyboard into it (the old school Apple wired full sized keyboard, which IMHO is the best keyboard ever made). I would also like this monitor to delivery power to the newer Mac, because that's massively convenient to wrangling an additional power brick and cables. At work I've already got a similar setup. What I need out of my monitor: UHD/4k resolution. Size: 28" to 32" Bright (I work in a room that's glass on two sides, heaps of natural light in the daytime) Don't care about gaming features, this will be connected to Macs ... 60Hz refresh is fine. USB-C and Display Port inputs (or Thunderbolt 3 + DP/Thunderbolt2) Preferable to auto switch between the two based on signal detection Enough power delivery over the USB-C to power the 2017 MBP 15" A USB hub would be a 'nice to have' to connect the wired keyboard permanently but its one feature I'm willing to sacrifice. The BenQ EW3270U nearly fit the bill but I've since found out there's no power delivery down the USB-C. thank you for any suggestions. EDIT: PC Parts picker doesn't list USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 as input options so I can't search there.

So I have an entirely first world problem. I just received my Razer Blade Pro 2019 2080 earlier today, upgrading from a Blade 14 1060 with a core to dock to. I upgraded with the intent of having a more powerful pc to play VR which I have been really getting into as of late. The core with a 1070 seemed to be handling fine but I wanted to get ready for the Valve Index so I needed more horse power, plus i just wanted a portable desktop. I settled on the highest spec'ed laptop razer makes because I am a true believer in mobile, its just the way to go in my opinion. My set up at home is a dual monitor, primary 144hz 1440p g-snyc for gaming and a 4k vertical panel for youtube, chrome, etc. I was so exited to pack up my old set up and experience the finest gaming graphics with my new 2080. But....soon realized the core with the 1070 carried all three of my displayport connections, both monitors and oculus rift s. So iv'e concluded that I could run the 4k with HDMI no problem, however gaming monitor is a no go. I wrongfully assumed this had a mini displayort as the Blade 15 does. (my falt completely for over looking) Now i would like to solve this some how that does not require me to buy a 2080ti and through it in the core, though iv'e already considered this to be my last option. Unless razer would accept a swap for a 15 advance model. Now One does anyone know any good thunderbolt docks that could carry a displayport 1.4 signal and has around 6 usb 3 ports? Two is all this worthless because I am not sure if the thunderbolt port is even tied to the 2080 cards display outputs? Does anyone else have a Blade pro 2019 and have and extensive set-up? how did you manage? If anyone with knowledge could help, would make my life much better.

Would you rather buy a laptop with a AMD Ryzen 7 3750H and GTX 1650 or a laptop with an intel i5-8300H with 1050Ti that have Thunderbolt 3 so you can use an external graphics card later on? These are the laptops that I was looking: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QM4F25N/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CZ6VK4G/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A2YLYLTN75J8LR&psc=1

Am I going to see a difference in performance between Gen 3 and Gen 4 over Thunderbolt 3? Is my MBP late 2016 even able to read Gen 4 over TB? Do I need to get a Gen 4 compatible enclosure or any thunderbolt nvme enclosure would do? Thanks

Hi there! First post here so be gentle! I am trying to run programs like Photoshop on my 4k TV however there is a noticeable lag time between my mouse input and response on the TV. I know I might be limited by the TV itself (maybe 30Hz?) but I was wondering if I could maybe improve the response times to a less noticeable degree by using a Thunderbolt 3 to HDMI cord. Would that change anything about how quickly my inputs are shown on TV? Currently connected to the TV with a regular HDMI cord, probably a cheapo from an old Verizon cable box. My XPS 15 9570 has a Thunderbolt 3 port (4 lane PCIe) and 1050 Ti TV is a few years old Vizio but displays 4k nicely, albeit slowly. Any tips?

As for myself, I'm planning on replicating the "Fastest Xbox" build from a few weeks ago, but rather than take an angle grinder to the GPU, I'll use an eGPU setup that mirrors the "Cleanest Setup" from a few weeks ago. I won't have to worry about a GPU filling the chassis with too much heat, and maintenance will be so much easier. For future builds with my personal machine, I might downsize again to have a mini-itx with an eGPU and (paradoxically) better cooling.

Hi, i just saw the LTT video on the cleanest setup. Just wondering if there is anyway I can make a portable pc that has thunderbolt capabilities with any new motherboards for 9th gen intel chipsets that works with the desk setup in the video. I want something portable but not a laptop, I can always get a display or bring my own keyboard so I do not really need or want to pay the price for a laptop plus a laptop is not really that upgradable. I did a search for thunderbolt 3 on motherboards but do not seem to see any.

Hello I am looking to buy a new laptop, here's what I am looking for: thunderbolt 3 (for possible e-gpu, or convince me that I don't need one) portable preferably 2 in 1 (with pen if possible) upgradable storage (and if possible ram) Good or better build quality Querty keyboard (not Belgian azerty) Absolute max of €1500 preferably less As I am in Europe (Belgium to be precise) and specs tend to differ per market, I find it hard to a laptop that would suit my needs. I have been looking at Lenovo's yoga c940 or hp spectre 360, but I would like to know if there are other, better options. All recommendations are welcome

Would Apple thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3 adapter work both ways? By that I mean it's supposed to adapt TB3 to the older TB2, taking a speed cut from 40gbps to 20gbps. But would it work the other way around? I realize OBVIOUSLY you would still have only 20gbps transfer speeds, but would it still function? I have a 2012 MacBook pro that over time I've upgraded everything from the ram to the thermal paste, including dual booting win 10. I'd love to do some casual steam gaming on it but the integrated graphics, while great for general productivity, don't offer great fps. I happen to have a reference 980ti laying around, and can get a PSU/tb2 enclosure for it for around $150 - would this kind of setup even work with an adapter? I know apple only OFFICIALLY supports AMD-based eGPUs with high Sierra, but since I'd be running steam on win10 this shouldn't be an issue? (Since TB is an Intel hardware spec, not an apple software limitation) Also I have concerns with TB 2 speeds being capable of supporting an eGPU, but then again apple used to sell a TB2 "black magic" eGPU so maybe it's fine? (At least with a 980ti, I'm assuming something crazy like an OC 2080ti might be bottlenecked) And again this is all assuming the adapter will work the way I intend it to? Basically, I'm asking if anyone else has done something similar - or do I just spend the 200 bucks on the adapter + enclosure, test it, and report back? Mid-2012 unibody MacBook Pro I7-3615QM 4c/8t @ 2.3-3.3 Ghz 2 TB Samsung 850 Evo SSD Intel HD 4000/Nvidia GT 650M 16 GB 1600mhz DDR3 memory MacOS High Sierra/Windows 10

Convert eSATA RAID enclosure to Thunderbolt3
mattiebatt posted a topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
Back in 2014 I bought a RAID tower enclosure - 8 bay SANS Digital RAID that never worked. First the powersupply died, they replaced it, but the eSATA RAID card kept dropping hard drives. I gave up with tech support and was out $340. It is now a monitor stand ? I've built a new workstation with Thunderbolt3 that I'd like to hook a RAID up to and am thinking of using the case and powersupply of the old SANS Digital. What would it take to get this running a Thunderbolt3 RAID? Thanks for any help! -
Hi, this is my first post so hopefully I'm doing this right! I have the last of the MacBook Pro's before they got rid of all the ports and added just USB C. This was great at first because I could still connect to everything whilst others had dongles.... however now times have changed! A lot of things are now natively USB C (including the workstations at my work) and I now find myself unable to connect to a lot of things. I have tried looking for dongles and adapters that turn USB C connections into other things such as mini displayport, but they don't seem to! Everything seems to be turning USB C into something else! Can anyone help please!
