Hello A while back i bought a R9 390 Sapphire 8GB and have been using it for quite a long time. I never had any issues until recently I started getting crashes with error Kernel Power 41. After reading through a lot of forums etc i saw that people were saying that it could be the cpu gpu psu and many more causing the problem. So i decided to bite the bullet and buy a "new" gpu ( 1080TI ) and a new 700W PSU. My pc worked without any crashed after the upgrade. But here is the main issue and also why im writing here. On my little brothers bday i built him a PC and used my old R9 390 completely forgetting about the issues i had with the Kernel Power 41 issue. After 2 weeks of him using the pc with no issues he got his first kernel power 41 crash and i instantly knew that its the GPUs fault. Now im asking for help trying to figure out if anyone on this forum knows how i could find the problem on the gpu and fix it. Ive heard of Heatgunning the GPU but idk if that will fix it. I know its all a high risk high reward type of situation. Thanks for reading.

So this is not something I had planned on doing but here we are... After reading and watching about the rather bazar 5600X3D and having no self control I decided to pick up the RAM, Motherboard and CPU combo at Microcenter. Which can be found here I had 0 reason for doing this other than upgrading to something that officially supports Windows 11 and some random memory detection issues on my current X99 based system. I also hope this will give me an incentive to get back into some PC gaming and try out some newer titles... but that is where this gets "fun" since I will be pairing this with my XFX R9 390 until I decide to upgrade the GPU. At least it is all AMD? Here is a link to my old build log on this current system if you are curious! Everything has remained the same minus changing over to a Gigabyte GA-X99-UD4P paired with a Xeon E5-1650v3 and 32GB of ECC 2400 4x8gb and a few little things like newer and less hard drives. https://linustechtips.com/topic/537405-sleeper-inwin-q2000-case-mod/#comment-7126881 Anyway let's get into the build! Also if you are building a system around the 5600X3D I would love to see it or hear what you think of it so far! GPU recommendations? Here are the parts as linked above: CPU - Ryzen 5 5600X3D Heatsink - Deepcool AK620 RAM - G.Skill Ripjaws 2x8gb 3200 DDR4 Motherboard - ASUS B550-Plus Wifi II GPU - XFX R9 390 8Gb Storage - Crucial P5 Plus 1TB NVMe SSD, 1TB WD Blue Sata 2.5 SSD and a 1TB WD Black 3.5 Hard drive Case - InWin Q2000 Power Supply - EVGA Supernova 750 watt semi modular All of this will be built on a 2001 Honda CRV folding table!

Hello. I'm a total noob when it comes to pc. But after sometime thinking and planing, finally decided to build myself a PC. Parts are coming in a week, but except the Gpu. Was planing a single pc streaming setup but then 1660's are out of stock everywhere(I don't live in USA btw), and getting 3000series atm is no no, So decided to go with a decent budget option for the time bein. Here is my parts: Cpu: ryzen 5 3600 Mobo: Msi mortar max b450m Ram: Crucial Ballistix 16g in dual 3200mhz Storage: some kingston nvme and 2tb 7200rpm hdd Psu: haven't decided yet but gonna get 600w one And some cheap as case. I can live with that And 1080p 144hz display to go with it, thinking about upgrading to 1440p in some time tho not soon. So, here is how this is looking right now, Gtx 970 4gb ... 144 usd R9 390 4gb ... 134 usd R9 290 4gb ... 115 usd Seller is telling me they are all new, but we all know that's total bs. But I'm ok with that, as long as they runs. So, Happy to hear your opinions guys

How do you force an amd gpu to always be at one voltage?
Terry Tuna posted a topic in Graphics Cards
Afterburner CTRL+L doesn't seem to work. And I need to do this to see if my gpu will work fine like that, since when its under a certain voltage/frequency - most apps start glitching out. Using a MSI r9 390 8gb, drivers - latest (default windows drivers do work without doing this kinda stuff)- 12 replies

So I purchased the ASUS R9 390 8GB 3 years ago. It was great for the first year, and then 1 of the fans went out (out of 3). Temps sort of went up, but not a lot, so I didn't see a reason to buy a whole replacement fan set. About 3 months later, the 2nd fan went out. At that time, I decided it was time to upgrade things, so I ended up buying the Ryzen 5 2600 (from my old AMD 8560), and I bought an MSI variant of the same card (2 fans) on ebay from a guy who was selling one for $100. Yeah it was used, but he was selling it because he bought an upgrade and just didn't need it anymore, so $100 for another R9 390 wasn't bad. I went a head and bought a new one because the "replacement" fan set of 3 fans was being sold for $80, so for another $20 I had a new card, and a backup (in case I needed it). I really liked the R9 390; does great in games, but now I'm starting to see lower and lower FPS averages when I buy new titles. (However, for SOME reason, this R9 390 is still on amazon for sell for roughly $400 -- no idea why). So I ran the new MSI R9 390 + Ryzen 5 for another year, and recently I did tests to see where my R9 390 sat in regards to performance and matched against the new stuff. And over the course of 3 years, it has significantly decreased ( userbenchmark.com puts it at the 50th percentile). Now, I'm debating on the upgrade and I've been looking at the 2060 Super which will run me $430ish for an aftermarket MSI boosted). How is the 2060S as far as handling the latest titles. I haven't migrated into the 2k 4k gaming yet. But I want to ensure that any games I get in the next year or two, can handle 60FPS without a year passing and then thinking "Welp, have to upgrade again". My other major complaint of the R9 390 has ALWAYS been the temps. You can easily hit 85C on high settings, and a lot of users have complained of even 90C. It's just the nature of that card. I'm just a casual gamer (maybe 2-3 hours every day or two); but I want to be able to install Resident Evil 3 when I get time off work, play it on max settings, and maintain 60fps stable, as well as other games.

Hello so I have been thinking alot about upgrading my graphics card. I have a amd 390 right now. So my question to you is it worh to upgrade my graphics card now or should i wait for nvidas new series? I use a 1080p monitor with 144hz. My cpu is a 4670k but I will upgrade it to ryzen 3600 because I want more ram and I feel like it would be waste of money to buy ddr3 right now.

So I've had this issue for a number of months and not been able to resolve it nor find any similar reports online. Essentially, a few months back I unplugged the HDMI cable from the computer, to plug into another device. This worked fine with the other device (and still does to this day) but when I reconnected the cable there would be no output to the other monitor. The active primary screen would still flicker whilst I try to plug the second monitor in (when the metal of the male hdmi connector touched the metal on the female) but when I actually made the connection. The computer itself is a custom pre-build from an online retailer, specs below: Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64-bit (10.0, Build 17134) (17134.rs4_release.180410-1804) System Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. System Model: Z170-Gaming K3 Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6600K CPU @ 3.50GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.5GHz Memory: 16384MB RAM Available OS Memory: 16334MB RAM Page File: 8729MB used, 20404MB available DirectX Version: DirectX 12 DX Setup Parameters: Not found User DPI Setting: 96 DPI (100 percent) System DPI Setting: 96 DPI (100 percent) DWM DPI Scaling: Disabled Miracast: Available, with HDCP Microsoft Graphics Hybrid: Not Supported DxDiag Version: 10.00.17134.0001 64bit Unicode The system has dual R9 390s which both show to be active when looking at Device manager. I would be really grateful if someone would enlighten me on how to fix this issue - though I would prefer not to, my feeling is the next option will be to take the device to a specialist but would much prefer to avoid the cost. Key things to note: The second card (lower) card gives no output at all from any port. The primary card only outputs from the HDMI. It has in the past outputted from the DisplayPort but no longer does, and would output HDMI from the secondary but no longer does. This issue had seemingly resolved itself following a random windows update - this leads me to believe that it is not hardware related. When identifying monitors, not others turn up. Both screens work, and all cables work. Yes, I have tried turning it off an on again, along with all manner of plugging in combinations but alas to no avail. Let me know if more information is required!

So my graphics card recently stopped working, there's no video output, but the PC boots and can use it when the monitor is plugged into the motherboard to use Intel's Onboard graphics. Specs CPU - i5 6600k GPU - Sapphire R9 390 Nitro 8GB RAM - 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 PSU - EVGA 650W G2 (80+ Gold) Mobo - Asus Z170-A Notes this is not a new build, the problem just began one day when I started up the system, after a power cut in BIOS, there is no graphic card detected in any of the 3 slots, even though I've checked with the GPU inserted into the PCIEX16_1 and PCIEX16_2 (there isn't room in the 3rd one) fans on the GPU aren't spinning, which makes me feel like the GPU may not be powered (but they don't normally come on until the GPU is warm enough) PSU seems to be serving the rest of the system well, so I'm skeptical that it's an issue with just the VGA power delivery GPU and PSU are 3 years old this month, so warranty has expired on GPU, but 7 year warranty on PSU I don't have access to another system to try the graphics card in, unfortunately So the question is, is my GPU dead? I really don't want to give up on it but I'm running out of ideas. Can anyone help a man in need at Christmas?

I've seen tutorials on youtube with people disassembling R9 390s, but I found out that my Powercolor PCS+ card is a little different, mainly not having the convenience of exposed screws. I only have the 4 retention screws with springs at the back, but taking them off doesn't help at all. How do I take the heat-sink off?

Hey Just need a little help with my GPU right now. I was playing Deus Ex Mankind divided on my PC (i5 6600k, Sapphire Tri-X R9 390x) and I noticed even running on High how poor the FPS was compared to the benchmarks I checkout of other which were showing over 60FPS. Meanwhile I was getting on average only 17FPS. I've also noticed many times my AMD drivers seemingly crash for no reason as well. Yeah I really dunno what to do any help would be greatly appreciated! Cheers!

Im well aware that the r9 390 is a terrible card to overclock and the Strix r9 390 doesnt cool the vrm's very well, but i have 2 questions about my overclock. I managed to get my r9 390 strix to 1125mhz core with +10% voltage Thats not weird I kept upping the memory clock to see how far it would go and it finally got to 1950Mhz and was fine, but i was seeing no gains in performance. It either was not actually applying the clock i was setting (sometimes when an overclock fails it reverts to defaults, but it claims it was running at 1950 mhz) or i got the best memory in the history of the world for r9 390's, but it just didn't make a difference. My first question is what is happening there? Secondly, would water cooling the card with something like the Kraken G12 (i already have a AIO just sitting and collecting dust) provide a better overclock? Would putting heat sinks directly on the vrm's provide a better overclock? I've watched a couple videos with conflicting results so what can i do, if anything, to up the clock on this card?

I'm buying an oculus and three lighthouses - ya'know, because I played my buddy's oculus once. So I'm putting together a new rig for gaming and a little development on the oculus. Could you check my build and maybe suggest fixes or sensible upgrades? I'm building a custom case. Budget is around $650 without the GPU, WD's, and case. It's not a hard budget so if you have a suggestion that's over no worries. This was all priced via amazon but here's a mostly accurate pcpartspicker list. • Ryzen 5 1600 - $174.98 • Borrowing a R9 390 until prices go down • Either a ASUS PRIME B350-Plus, GA AB350 Gaming 3, or an MSI B350 Tomahawk Arctic - $94.99 - $99.99 • Ballistix Sport LT (4GBx2) DDR4 2400 - BLS2K4G4D240FSC - $85.99 • Samsung evo 860 MZ-76E250B/AM - $84.99 • Reusing some WD blue 500GB drives • EXPLOMOS PCIE to USB 3.0 & C Card - $21.99 • EVGA 650 GQ, 80+ GOLD 650W, Semi Modular 210-GQ-0650-V1 - $69.99 • RAYSUN 2 Port USB 3.0 to 20 pin mobo connector - $9.99 • Pwr and Reset momentary button I'd like some advice on the mobo. Linus and a few others seemed to like the ASUS but the Gigabyte has dual BIOS and the Tomahawk apparently has good VRMs. Is one better quality, significantly more friendly, etc.? I've never overclocked before but I'd like to do so.

Basically I had Blender open, along with some YouTube and other pages in the background. All of a sudden the screen goes black and all I could notice were some brown lines in the corner. This image I found sort-of describes it, except they were possibly horizontal and definitely not covering the whole display. The thing is, it happened so fast, you could barely notice it. I'm sure it didn't last a second. Nothing crashed, YouTube didn't even seem to cut off the audio. Everything came back as sudden as it went dark. Blender seemed to be more zoomed in than before, but maybe I was in the middle of doing that anyway. By now I've looked through the components for any visual damage, particularly capacitors, but everything I could see seemed fine. Although looking at the 390 PCB now, there are quite a bit more of them than the single line you can see through the heat sink. Still, am I right in thinking that even a single bad capacitor would be noticeable via more constant symptoms? So far putting on some load with Far Cry 3 shows no issues. Took out my PSU for a closer look as a cap seemed suspect, but it appeared to be the same yellow-green dab of paint that the all the others are marked with, just a bit thicker in the crease. Also checked if everything's seated nicely too. Anything else worth checking? Things to look for in case it happens again? What are the chances this was a software glitch and not a hardware issue? Any similar, known issues with this combo or any separate piece of software? Just really not liking the idea of having hardware failure in this 'still kinda new, but old enough to be out of warranty' stage of ownership. The probably relevant stuff: Sapphire R9 390 NITRO / Driver version - 18.2.2 i5 4460 ASRock H97M PRO4 Seasonic M12II-620 EVO Rest is in my profile.

I have an R9 390, and the current experience is terrible. Although 3DMark says that my GPU is adequate for a 390, Cinebench does not because it proves 96 fps when my card should reach 130; I know the cause, but not the solution. Some stutter that is fixed with third party applications, but there is a problem that no one seems to know the answer to: regardless of resolution or settings, I never, NEVER get better or worse FPS. Sounds good, but it isn't because in games such as Far Cry 4 where I dip in the low 50s and mid 40s (which is where my freesync range goes to shit) I cannot dip the settings to get a smooth frame rate. I have an i5 6500, which does NOT bottleneck a 390, 1x8 GB RAM, a Corsair RM650x and good thermals. No it is not due to lack of optimization in games, but a problem with the driver of my card, some sort of power saving feature I can't find. No power save features are turned on in the AMD drivers, or windows C. Panel, the PCI-E slot in C. Panel does not have any power saving features on, and my PSU should be enough. No, I don't use V-Sync, and the wattage profile in the AMD driver is set to 50+, and "Ultra Power Saving" or whatever option is turned off in a third party app. the answer is not obvious, I am sure of that, so I want someone with experience on this. I've tried: Different drivers Downloading a gaming bios for my 390 Re seating RAM Re seating the GPU Using two power cables, not a split 8+6 Overclocking (which causes artifacts) Turning it off and back on again Turning off freesync Updating MOBO Bios Latest Intel driver Uninstalled old drivers Resetting CMOS I can't switch my PCI-E slot to the bottom one since my card is too long, lol. Anybody with similar experiences both on AMD or NVidia that fixed this problem by fiddling with the BIOS or windows settings (I have an Asus mobo btw), but does not require reinstalling windows, or formatting my HDD and SSD (because fuck that shit).

I have an R9 390 and an i5 6500. When I play a game like Far Cry 4, I get like 55fps on ultra settings (which is still too low for a 390) but if I run at the minimum settings, I only get a boost to 70fps, which dosn't smell right. Also present in far Cry 3 and Hunter Call of the Wild. I should also mention I get a lot of stutter. No it's not a CPU bottleneck, sftu about that, and no I don't have vsync on. I have read about this everywhere but there is no actual fix, I've used DDU to uninstall old drivers, and I've tried both Catalyst and Crimson and Adrenaline, to no avail. Help? Also I have an RM650x PSU and I have two cables connected to the GPU, not a split, there is also no difference.

I have an i5-6500 and an R9 390, which should be a good match, but the GPU seems to be really under performing. This is in every game, but the one which really stood out was far cry4, which on ultra it would have 60-80fps, but me playing at very medium settings (I'm talking no MSAA or SSAO or any fur or game works or godrays) I only get about 50fps. I'm on the latest drivers and I have a Corsair RMX 650 for my PSU. Any help?
-
So after much debating over in another forum I made, thank you everyone who participated for being slightly passive aggressive it was a great time, they have recommended me some PSUs, ones to replace my shitty VS650. As the title says, I'm sporting a heavy R9 390 which would need a decent PSU. So would a Corsair RM 550X be a good match? I heard it is on par with some other XFX one, although slightly cheaper. I want some good opinions.

Okay so I got an R9 390 from Ebay the other day and I looked online and apparently my PSU is trash, not because of the Wattage, but becuase of the quality. The Corsair VS650 is infamous for being a Tier 6 apparently, and it won't handle a hot, power hungry GPU. Any 600Watt PSUs for about 50 pounds that Are of higher quality? https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01127D0MY/ref=psdc_430514031_t1_B01GJD45YS This EVGA 600W seems to be a Tier 4, is it good enough? https://www.yoyotech.co.uk/650w-atx-80-plus-fully-modular-xfx.html also this XFX one is very pricy in the stores it is actually available, is it good?

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/SomeDudeWhoWantsAPC/saved/kVF8dC That is my PC for refference. This has been a topic done to death anyway but whatever. The recommended PSU for an R9 390 is 750Watts but mine is only a 650W. I've heard that many people could run this card off a 550W PSU as long as it is a good one, but I just don't know how good mine is as a bought it from Amazon for 50 pounds (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-CP-9020098-UK-PLUS-Power-Supply/dp/B00PGUSEBG/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1518614234&sr=1-1&keywords=vs650). Is the VS650 a good enough PSU for an R9 390? http://www.corsair.com/en-gb/vs-seriestm-vs650-650-watt-power-supply-uk this is my PSU: 12V rail 2x 8Pin+2 85% efficiency 80+ efficiency And it seems to range from 20A to 50A depending on how stressed it is.
-
so ive done this topic to death, but i just bought an r9 390 for 200 pounds (uk), and at that price i speculate it might have been in ownership of a crypto miner. How long would a tri-fan r9 390 last? Looking for about a year and a half and im not talking about performance, but how long till it dies.

Hello linus techies, I own 1 x R9 390 [using it w/ latest W7 x64 driver] I ordered 1 x RX 580, and i am planning of installing it below the R9 [since the R9 has 512 bits of MEMORY BUS] => thus creating the crossfire. Since it's my 1st crossfire [and cross generations] i am wondering which driver to use: 1. Keep the R9 driver ? 2. Install the RX driver ? Thank you [in advance... for your support] PS. The PSU is 850W and should handle the combo.
