  1. Assuming one could get ahold of a rtx 3090 cooler and also modify it to mount. Would it be viable to try to cool a cpu with it in a small form factor case? I know alot of cpus in sff cases suffer from small coolers because of height restrictions, however since most people move the gpu around anyways you have alot of room to go over the pcie slot, especially if one makes there own case. Would it be more effective then say... A noctua L9A cooler? PS. If I ever manage to find a 3090 heatsink online somewhere and buy it. (Assuming people find this somewhat viable) I’d happily try to do this for myself and post the results.
  2. I got the Asus PN50 with an AMD Ryzen 3 4300U a few days ago and because I didn't find any teardowns anywhere I had to do my own. I also wanted to know how easy it is to remove the fan, to make the PN50 quieter, more about that further down. The first step is to remove the four screws marked with the red arrow and the two connectors marked with the blue arrow. To remove the SATA cable the black lever of the connector has to be pushed up, then it slides out easily. The next step is to remove the back plate. It is held in place by those three clips. After that unscrew the display port PCB. After that is connected only by the ribbon cable so be careful. I tried to disconnect the cable but I wasn't successful. The last step before the PCB can be removed is to disconnect and remove those two PCBs and the WiFi antenna cable. The PCBs are attached with an adhesive tape, so it's easy to remove them. The antenna cable is attached with those two white clips. Then you can either disconnect the two antenna cables from the WiFi card or the WiFi card from the mainboard. I did the later. Now the PCB can be lifted from the case. It's a really tight fit. This is the case. There is nothing special about it. Here is another picture of the already familiar top side of the PCB. And here is the secret bottom side with the CPU. It is possible to remove the fan by unscrewing the two screws. The connector is a four pin 1mm pitch JST connector. And from the front the CPU is visible bellow the cooler. Those are the insides of the PN50. I have the only the Ryzen 3, but the fan is still really noticeable under full and even medium load. I want to have it running 24/7 and therefore completely quiet. My plan is to remove the fan and 3D print a case that goes around the PN50 and uses a Noctua 120mm 5V fan to push air into the PN50 and out through the CPU cooler. A 120mm fan spinning with 1000rpm should already push enough air to cool the CPU and still be completely quiet. I'll keep you up to date how this project is progressing. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
  3. Hy.I just got a mouse mat from madcazt it is the biggest oine you can get from them the one wher you can place the keyboard and mouse as well. The problem is with this mouse mnat is that the edge is not sttanding together,it needs the needlework around the edges like other manufacturees do.What could i do to solve this issue are there any material would be good to not fall behind the quality of the mouse mats if i mod this one with around the edges? In short moude mat edges started to have slices of the surface that i use i want to make sure by modding it around the edges that this will notr happen with maybe a a needlework. What is the material that most of the matufacturers use at thos edfes around the mouse mat to close then down?Thank you. The mat i have problem with. https://www.madcatz.com/En/Product/Detail/glide38 This is what is missing around the edges: https://printyourpad.com/ REINFORCED EDGE STITCHING This mouse pad is built to last and has high quality stitching around its edges to ensure it doesn't fray or fall apart like other mouse pads. Greatly increases the lifespan and the aesthetics of the mousepad. Optimal stitch size helps prevent you from rubbing your wrists on the edges which can cause a skin irritation.

  6. will this case the Corsair 7000D AIRFLOW fit a ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II 420 the specs say for the Motherboard Tray: 480mm / 420mm iv got the aio but want a case that will fit it
  7. Can anybody help me? I have a Dell inspiron 13 5301 which I bought a while ago and I have always wanted to replace the display although I lack the knowledge of compatibility to follow through with it so I thought someone might be able to help me. My laptop has a matte IPS panel that is dull and just bad overall and I have been wanting to replace it but I struggled to find a replacement. Here are the screen's specs: 1920x1080 250 nits peak brightness 60Hz IPS So I did some googling and couldn't find anything until I stumbled across a notebookcheck.net review of it where they have a usefull weight and size comparison info-graph thingy and a laptop that had practically the same dimesions and, as I later found out, an OLED panel! I am not sure though whether the display is compatible as there are tonnes of different connectors that manufacturers use but with my limited knowledge I assume that it is also a 30-pin connector because its 1080p... Would it be compatible? I've been unable to find any actual pictures of the zenbook's connector so I'm not sure but if someone has more experience than me and could let me know that would be great! my laptops connector the OLED laptops connector the connector on OLED back panel
  8. im still acquiring the parts for my 3nd build an im still deciding on a case an fan an rad layout and i keep leaning towards the Fractal Design Torrent for a custom watercooled build for my 5800x an powercolor 6700xt fighter an if i can get a matching water block for the gpu so both can be liquid cooled iv got both cpu an gpu an Aquacomputer airplex radical 4/280, aluminum fins https://www.aquatuning.us/water-cooling/radiators/radiators-active/280mm/20176/ aquacomputer-airplex-radical-4/280-aluminum-fins iv got 7 x Noctua A14 industrialPPC-3000 PWM 158.5 CFM 140 mm Fans now for the Caveat in the layout with the Fractal Design Torrent an that big back area id like to configure the rad an fans like this the rad on the bottom intake aligned ti the two first 140mm spot leaving the last as just air intake an for the front 3 x 140mm run them as exhaust with some filter mesh covering the back minus the rear 140mm intake the reason for this layout is in my home 2 issues plague my 2 current builds 1.this paint flak dust off our stucco ceiling that cakes the intakes after ever two weeks an starts to cake the inside of the case gear after a month so avg cleaning is 4 times the is tiring 2. any decent filter mash that can block the flak dust to were only 1 cleaning a month is needed cuts the air flow an cooling by about 30% which i could almost deal with except it tanks all performance during the summer an in my home during 90plus temps my place holds at 75 degs which makes my idle temp 46c to 48c an under load 57c to 65c all this is solved by removing the filter mesh but then i have to clean it 4 times a month this is taxing my long winded question / rant is this i dont think the thickness of the mesh is the direct cause by its proximity to the fans. so my thinking is that the 3 x Noctua A14 industrialPPC-3000 as exhaust would pull the air throw the case with ease an off the rad which would have the fans on top as a pull config would this be a safe bet to think this would work an if so id reconfigure the other two case an layout to match
  9. Hello everyone! I would like to find a way to upgrade my existing laptop to better performance and I wanted to know if it possible to simply install a better cpu (or rather apu) ? I'm guessing there is a need to install a different bios, does anyone know how to find the right one? (I mean is there even a ready sollution?) Also is there a way to add a mobile graphics card with m.2 slot? (I honestly do not know if there is a way to do within the laptop) I will add photos of the intererior later
  10. I am attempting my first PC case mod, and thought that the LTT forums would be a good place to get some help.I am using a CM Storm Stryker case, and would like to turn it into a Star wars themed build. I am looking for any ideas that fall into the white, black, and red color scheme that I'm going for, so feel free to post any ideas. Stipulations: -I have no problem painting my case, but I will not cut it. However, I am not a painter, I will more than likely be spray painting a stencil. -I am a broke college kid, I don't have much walking around money, so nothing too crazy (more than $700 US) -This is not a passion build, this is my first computer. I do not have a backup, so I need functional and reliable concepts what I need help with: - Custom water cooling loop: hard or soft? Rad? pump? liquid? reservoir? Blocks? - New PSU: something fully modular - Leds - Fans I'm excited to see what people have to say, no ideas will be shot down.
  11. Finnished this blog now?: Not quite, I am yet to do the Grid2 Benchmark but I can talk about the general use of the cards. Before modding, the reference card was extremely loud, as you can imagine, whereas the Tri-X cooler stayed almost silent. After this mod, I found that while the total noise for both cards has been reduced, the single 120mm fan is having to work harder that the three 80mms on the Tri-X. So it's louder post mod unfortunately. On the bright side though, the card runs at the same temperature but goes back to idle temps much faster. As for the reference, almost a 40 degree difference in max temperature. VRM: The bane of my life while working on these cards, VRM temps are still higher that I would like. At this point though, I can't amend this short of buying bigger and less stylish coolers. Which might seem like a good trade off to some of you but for me, getting this build to look right is more important that perfect temps. 65 degree average VRM in intensive games is good enough for me. Whats Next?: Well since the change from PC In A Drawer to PC On The Wall, I have made progress with the designs. These cards should be installed into the custom case next week, since its half term I can get a day off to do it in. However, I am working on another Attempts blog now. This one will feature a some packaging and an ITX Motherboard. I will not be uploading onto this blog until the cards are fitted into the final case, or until something breaks. Thank You :)
  12. Whats Going On?: Almost as soon as I started mocking up the layout of the drawer, I found that the total thickness would be too much for an under desk drawer. Moreover, the width and height of the case would bee too much to fit, practically, on my desk. With careful consideration to the style of both my office and the PC, I am going to be swapping over to a PC on the wall. However, I will still be building a PC into a drawer. I plan to sue older 939 socket era hardware and some passive cooling solutions to make a work PC that will have hot swap HDD bays, small boot ssd and will fit entirely into a 1.5U sized drawer. I was limited by the magnitude of the hardware in this build, VRM overheating and other unforeseen troubles have lead me to re-work the basis of my build. I plan to adapt what I already have to fit onto the wall, rather that into a desk. The biggest advantage to this would be dropping the cable mechanism that I had planned for the drawer. In order to be able to extend the PC while still in use I would have added 50mm to the thickness of the case. Doesn't seem a lot now but because I can not change some other sizes, I should be able to slim the bulk of the case down, barring the 120mm fans which have to be 120 thick. The Smokey's Chronicles blog has a post entitled Important! which you can actually vote on. If I get more of you asking for a drawer then I will go and build it with this hardware. Please keep in mind that there will be a PC In A Drawer just not with this hardware. Thank You :)
  13. Things Changing: I was in the process of mocking up the layout of the drawer PC build, Smokey Attempts: PC In A Drawer, and I realized that the mechanisms I need to implement that will allow the drawer to be extended without disconnecting wires will add upwards of 5cm to the total height of the drawer. A total of around 19cm is too much to fit under the desk. In addition, the width and depth of the mock up will have it too large to be a practical desktop. Unless I sacrifice looks for function. Something that, considering the extensive GPU modding, I do not want to do. I plan for more projects, some PC orientated and some not, so it is entirely plausible that I create a new blog, detail a more functional budget PC fitted into a drawer. In fact, I have already started to make plans for this, to the extent of mocking up a passive cooled solution. So here's the important part, I would like to know if swapping the current Drawer Build to... Smokey Attempts: PC On The Wall. Should I swap or not? I will add, if I don't get any comments then I am going ahead with the swap. Thank You :)
  14. Whats Going On?: Okay so I work as a roofer, due to the ice and snow we've been getting we are working much later that usual. This also means that I have to wait for longer delivary times. I have missed several deliveries already. However, there is good news. I have the schematics started and I am working on the next Red Mod update. Make sure to check it out tomorrow. I appreciate anyone who follows these blogs. Thank You :)
  15. Cooling 'n' stuffs: Just cooling the processor isn't enough, VRM and to a lesser extent, VRAM need some attention too. These heat sinks were pretty cheap and came with a terrible thermal pad that wouldn't stick at all. So I took these off and used the smallest amount of MX2 paste as possible. I also had to spread the paste by hand because the heat sinks are under any kind of retention. Didn't take long after I got the hang of spreading the paste. I have some photos but I've been having phone camera issues so this is all I got. The rest were ether corrupted or severely blurred. Whats Next? Very long day today, more posts coming tomorrow on a gaming build. These will be on the main blog channel Smokey's Chronicles. Other than this I plan to dribble bits on the Drawer blog until Wednesday where I will have major updates. Benchmarks for this 290x will be up Wednesday, delivery's permitting.
  16. What Did I do?: This is Avexir RAM that has had the heat sinks removed. To keep the ram cool inside my new custom case I have got some basic ally heat sinks. However, the yellow LEDs are not covered up which I thought would be a bad look but I'm not sure now. Once I've got everything in the case I will decide if I want to cover the LEDs with small pits of electrical tape. These are the only images that I managed to get due very bad camera support with my ROM. While I'm working on this, I don't plan on uploading images from this camera for much longer. I have some Nikon's around here somewhere that I will be switching to. Anyway, here are the pictures. Whats Next?: This weekend I have a build log in the pipeline for my main blog, Smokey's Chronicles. In addition to this, I have made some progress on the 290x red mod. This will likely be up tonight too but I've been delayed today. Nothing serious I just had to work late and then sort out this new build. Thank You :)
  17. What I Did: After I fixed the DVD drive and installed Ubuntu on this machine I discovered that the WiFi card was broken as it wouldn't register. I replaced that with one from a HP mini and let everything update. Three weeks after, it was too slow for me. Only 2GB of RAM was killing me so I nabbed another stick and tried swapping the processor. No luck with that but the RAM upgrade went fine. Next was the HDD, Kingston 300V 60GB SSD is the boot drive now. I got rid of the DVD drive all together and bought an adapter so I can keep the original 120GB drive for mass storage. One install of windows 10 later and I'm looking at an almost brand new laptop. Apart from the faded and scratched paintwork. The final steps in this project were to remove the speakers, never used them, and to spray the casing black. Unfortunately, the primer I used had a poor hold in some places. Resulting in some faded patches. I decided that trying to fix them would probably make it worse anyway. Everything was working fine, until my BIOS calmed to be corrupted. happened out of the blue on day at college, when I restarted it was fine but had a password. Still haven't managed to get past this. Phoenix and Dell passwords don't work. I need an eeprom programmer to get it. Until then I have got by with access to the boot loader menu. Today I took apart the machine and replaced the heat sink and fan. Used some of the MX2 paste for my GPU mods. Here are some images of the mod. This wasn't what I had hoped to add to the blog today but I had issues with the other build, I've had to shuffle my days around for the next two weeks. I'll put the plan at the bottom of the entry. Whats Next?: This Saturday I am in my office, building desks and worktops ready for the build coming Sunday. I will let out more details on this in Saturdays entries to this blog. I have so much stuff arriving next week that it might be hard to get big updates out for the Smokey Attempts blogs, not to say there won't be updates. I will have the summative GPU mod on the Drawer blog for next Sunday and big updates of the dedicated Red Mod blog next Friday and Saturday. As for other things, I have some old hardware that I'm going to be doing some mad stuff with. I'm planning some oil cooled stuff for next month so keep an eye out for that. Other that those things I will still be uploading snippets to this blog about random things like tiny heat sinks, buying experiences and what not. Thank You :)
  18. What?: I've attached a Corsair H60 AIO to a 290x reference from MSI. Insane... Yes... Dangerous?... Yes... Cool?... You tell me people. To see more on this, go to my other blog Smokey Attempts: The Red Mod. Whats Next?: Regular update to each blog, and some cool stuff on this blog by tonight hopefully. I should be able to make a start on another build late this evening and I will by uploading entries with images today and tomorrow. Thank You :)
  19. Oh My Jesus...: First step in modding the 290x is to actually mount the CPU AIO to the card. I have no VRM or VRAM cooling yet, so expect no overclocking or even bench marking beyond idle temps today. Check out my other blog, Smokey Attempts: The Red Mod, for more detail. Here are some images of the card to wet your appetite. Whats Next?: For this blog, not allot I'm afraid. I have some RAM coolers coming Friday and until then I will be posting schematics for the internals of the case. Please, any ideas on mounting positions and solutions would be great. I'm happy that at this time 75 people have looked at this blog, I'm sure many just popped in and out but if you are following this then thank you, make sure to check out my other blogs, Smokey's Chronicles and Smokey Attempts: The Red Mod. Any thoughts on this mod? Thank You :)
  20. Progress! My thermal paste arrived this morning so I can re-mount the H60. I have done two things differently this time around, one was to fit the cable ties like this... and the other was to add more paste. Moreover, I checked the coverage of the paste and if covers the die which is great. I did this by pressing the cooler by hand before tightening the cable ties. Now, I didn't press down super hard, in fact there were still some blogs of paste that needed to be pushed down a little more. I'm currently running the pump and fan on molex adapters to get an idea for noise. Very loud I have to say, some Noctuas wouldn't go a miss but they are a little over budget. Mind you, it is my birthday soon... perhaps I will add them to the list along with a fan controller. Anyway, everything seems to be running okay, I plan to re-attach the PCIe bracket and make sure that idle temps are insane. I will post another entry once I get some results. No stress testing today, I haven't got anything on the VRMs or the VRAM. Haven't cut the last of the ties down yet, just in case I need to ratchet them down more but I don't expect to. I can pick the card up by the H60 and it doesn't come away. Probably not good for it but nether the less, a good test to check the levelness of the mount. It was really hard to tighten the ties at the same rate. I had a huge issue with this in my previous attempts. However, the new cable tie arrangement has worked out brilliant. Here are some images of the card so far. I ill update this blog with regular info on my cards. Whats Next?: Monday next week is the due date for my VRM and VRAM sinks to arrive, once they are here I will get a couple of entrys out on this blog for the fitting and then testing. I will also add a summative entry on the main blog and on the Drawer build blog. Other than that, I may have so stuff on another build up for tonight or tomorrow depending on work scheduling. Anyway, this went pretty well, it was tense but I'm glad I didn't chicken out. Stay tuned fore more cool modding and overclocking. Thank You :)
  21. Wow, That's A Lot Of Hardware...: So about a month ago I tore my rig apart for a clean. This was during my move from the office to bedroom. I took the whole of my case apart and blasted it with an air compressor. Broke out the wet wipes too, got everything looking nice and fresh. I've got some images of the hardware laid out but nothing of the actual job. I did this within three hours so everything apart from the HDD and the GPU got taken apart. This is before I got me second 290x. Whats Next?: Many things, some stuff coming out on the main blog for upcoming builds. As well as progress with the red mod. Expecting big updates early next week now since delivery dates got pushed back. Looking for any input you might have for this project, and for the others. Thank You :)
  22. Why Won't You Leave Me Along Dog!: Litteraly all morning this thing has been sat there looking at me. I've no idea what to do, I can't yell at a puppy. It's really distracting. Bloody thing, still... better that a child I suppose. Whats Next?: More of the same here, a lot of waiting. There is a possibility of some updates to this blog tonight because I'm checking hardware for a build I have soon. Stay tuned on my other blogs for cool modding content, will probably end in tears... Thank You :)
  23. Why Did I Do This?: The Avexir RAM I have in my rig had yellow and black heat sinks with yellow LEDs. The color scheme of my next build is white and black so I had to change this. While I can't remove the LEDs I can just small amounts of tape and aftermarket heat sinks to cover them. As the RAM doesn't seem to get above room temp, I am not worried about leaving them naked. However, the LEDs may cause a problem if they get too hot but I doubt they will. Here Are Some Images: First Stick, Two sicks, Graveyard shot, Final product, Back at home, Whats Next?: I expect to release the followup entry later this week or early next week depending on the delivery of the sinks. As for my other blogs, Smokey Attempts: The Red Mod and Smokey's Chronicles, I will be making small updates every day and I plan big ones for this weekend, early next week. Thank You :)
  24. What Happened?: Heres what I did; powered down the PC, turned off PSU, held power button for 10secs, removed all RAM, removed RAM heatsinks, rebooted, duel BIOS repaired by corrupted BIOS, rebooted, boot failed, went into BIOS and changed RAM profile to 2134Mhz, rebooted, failed, rebooted with same settings, sucsess and RAM is at 2134MHz. Does anyone know what I could have done to cause this? And is it a sign of damaged components? Whats Next?: Two builds coming up soon that I will be blogging on and some updates to my other blogs, Smokey's Chronicles and Smokey Attempts: The Red Mod. Thank you :)
  25. Who The Hell Is This Guy?: Who the hell are you? I'm a roofer from Cambridgeshire England. Gaming is not a big deal for me whereas hardware is. I have a pretty decent rig that I an currently planning to mod into a custom case: Smokey Attempts: PC In A Drawer :. Long time watcher, first time community member. What better time to start blogging that when I'm already planning something pretty mental. So I hope you enjoy, don't use my other blogs as a guide as I WILL make mistakes. Cheers. What Am I Writing About?: The actual point of this blog will change from week to week as I start and finish different projects. Moreover, I will be updating this blog with stuff like college work, my job, friends systems and personal builds. Whats Next?: Coming up I have two builds; one high end gaming machine with an 8320e and a 290x, and another legacy build which is going to be a linux media player. As I make progress I will update this blog. Changes with college tutors have changed my days from three a week to just two so I should have some more time at my hands to blog. Thank you :)
