macbook pro died. Building first video editing pc.
aclebre posted a topic in New Builds and Planning
Hello everyone, First time posting and new to the pc world. I've been using an old 2011 macbook pro 17in laptop to editing videos for over 6 years. Sadly, like most 2011 macbook pros, the graphics chip died...again. So with the crazy high prices for new models I've decided to look into the pc building world. After some months watching a whole bunch of videos on youtube, I think I have a starting point for a build, but could really use some feed back to see if I'm missing something. Following the format for this thread heres what I got. 1. Budget & Location Around $1500 US. I'm planning to order the parts one Cyber Monday here in the States to get some killer deals to save some money for a monitor or for better components. 2. Aim Video Editing is the main purpose. I'm going to be start regularly posting videos on youtube so it's going to be a work horse. I use many of the Adobe CC programs like Premiere, Audition, Lightroom, Photoshop, and some others. Maybe some light gaming but it's not a need. 3. Monitors Right now I could use my 4K tv to hold me over for now. I've been looking into the Dell - P2715Q 27.0" has been getting good reviews from other content creators. 4. Peripherals No idea yet. Planning to use some spare ones I got lying around until I find ones I like. I'm open to suggestions 5. Why are you upgrading? Walking away from the Apple tree. I loved my 17in macbook pro but the world, and Apple, has changed quite a bit. Here's what I'm thinking so far. So I was trying to get a GTX 1080 build for the cheapest price, but with the best $ per FPS, considering that it will last for a long time and have a 60fps for 1440p gaming. I came up with this build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/xV6Vgw This is a bit specific as I have some of this components, I just included them for the record they are: - Hitachi - Deskstar 7K1000.D 1 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive - Toshiba - 3 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive - Rosewill - HIVE 750 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply - Samsung - S22B150N 21.5" 1920x1080 Monitor So the only price cut that I'm getting are the Power Supply and the Hardrive. I don't intead to modify the GTX 1080 as I believe it would be for the long run of my gaming experience. I have no experience in building computers so I would really like recommendations on this build. EDIT: (I'm sorry I didn't see the "Build Plan Thread" and I can't delete this post, if I can get any recommendations it would be awesome, otherwise I will post it on there tomorrow)

Hello! My name is Charles, I'm 12 and is a currently trying to be a filmmaker and a editor, I use Vegas Pro 14 for my editing software, and whenever using effects, on my clips like... color correction, chroma key, transitions and many more have seem to lag a lot during preview, so I have to watch the footage frame by frame, and when rendering takes about 2-3 hours for 1080p 30fps footage, and when using warp stabalizer on my footage using pr since I don't have a steadicam yet for my dslr, it takes about 20 minutes for a 10 sec clip. I use a Sony Vaio Vpce series laptop, intel integrated graphics, 4gb ddr3 ram and an i3 370m. I am hoping to see if I can build a new pc mainly for visual editing and a little light gaming. MY CURRENT BUDGET: $1000-$1200 Programs I mainly want to use Premiere Pro CC and After Effects CC Vegas Pro 14 Photoshop CC Blender(maybe idk) Components I wish to have in the pc Cpu I7-8700k Noctua NH-U9S (I want to over clock to at least 4.8ghz) 16GB ram ddr3 ram Some type of m.2 ssd at least under 40 like the ADATA 128gb m.2 ssd Asus Z370-A Mother Board And any type of Gpu above the 1050ti or Radeon rx 580 something at least under 150 or I might just buy a used 1050ti ALL PRICES SHOULD BE IN CAD SINCE I LIVE IN CANADA!!!!!! Hope you can help me find the components I can get for my pc, thanks!

I got home from work this morning to see a box on my desk. Opening it up I find a i9-9900k. Reading the card, I find that my kids along with my parents have bought me an upgrade! Im happy with my 8700k, but I don't want to disappoint them and not make use of the CPU... What is a proud dad to do? Return it and get them their money back for something I really could use? Put it in my system and use the 8700 for another build? My kids can't use it, they all have Ryzen based systems that I just built them this past Christmas. I know my system can handle the 9900k, but argh... What would you do?

Hello all, after 10 year of playing on a gtx 280 and I figured with the prices of the 1080ti dropping that it might be a good time to build a new pc. I would like to re-use my old case a CM Trooper and CPU Liquid Cooler : neptopn 240m for my new build as they have not seen much use and still do the job. Now I did not want to buy a RTX 2080 an managed to get myself a new AORUS GTX 1080 Ti on sale. I'm struggling with Motherboard and CPU though watching ton of videos hasn't brought me any closer to a decision. Everytime I think I reached a decision I read something new such as AORUS GTX not fitting in AORUS gamimg 7 ? Now RAM will be depeneded on the board so I did not look into it yet, I don't care for RGB on the ram though Overview PC I'm thinking about: Case: CM Trooper the case has 4 Coolers in it CPU: Intel Core i5-8600K or Intel i7-8700k? I have seen my charts and just wanted to now the personal expierence of you guys if difference is noticeable enough to make it worth the extra 200€ CPU-Cooling: neptopn 240m GPU: AORUS GTX 1080 Ti (Purchased) 650.-€ Motherboard: Gigabyte Gigabyte Z370 AORUS Gaming 7 or ROG MAXIMUS X HERO ( are equally priced where I live) The problem what I have with the Aorus is I have read that there are issues with Aorus Z370 and the Aorus GTX 1080ti not fitting, I called customer support and they said that the GTX 1080ti was revised and there should no longer be a problem, if so I need to contact support. Can anyone confirm that it has been fixed? Any reason I should consider another board? RAM: 16 GB should be enough for now just want the best performance for either of the boards RGB is nice to have Storage: Samsung 970 Evo M.2 500GB Samsung 860 EVO, 1 TB SSD (Purchased) 160€,- POWER: Coolermaster recommend 631W min any recommendations I'm tending towards Be Quit not haven't looked into which one Thanks you in advance for your aid Budget between 1400-1800€ max location Netherlands/Germany

Hey Gang, I was wondering if I would be able to get some input from you guys. So I have just completed building a new computer rig from the bottom up and need some help with determining how far I can push my Overclocking, but mostly whether or not my computer is being bottle necked in anyway. Here are the Spec's to my parts: CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-8700K Processor GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti SC2 GAMING RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) MB: ASUS ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING PSU: HXi Series™ HX1000i CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 CPU Cooler Case: Corsair Obsidian Series 750D Purpose of Rig: Strictly hardcore gaming. I just got Far Cry 5, runs it pretty smooth but there are definite lag spikes. QUESTION's: 1. Am I being Bottled necked? 2. How far can I push my CPU to be over clocked? 3. Is it possible to over clock my GPU? 4. What should my average idle temperatures be for my CPU, MB & GPU? 5. I know the PSU is overkill but I bought it because I'm going to be picking up another GTX 1080 SC2; Will this be enough PSU? 6. How do I over clock my cpu .. lol Also, any recommendations for a monitor? I plan to get one with the following spec's: 27", 1440P, 144HZ, 1MS, G-SYNC. I actually bought the MSI MAG27CQ and experienced a dead pixel upon arrival 3x in a row. I decided to finally return the POS and wait patiently until I find the right monitor lol. Please feel free to leave any comments or tips, as I'm a total newbie builder and Just need some help and advise! Thanks everyone!!!

I'm running an i7-8700k, not overclocked, cooled by a Noctua NH-D15. My case is a Thermaltake Core X5, so there's plenty of airflow. All of my fans are set to run at 100% once temps reach 50°C. They're definitely all functional. Ambient temps are about 27°C, and baseline CPU temp is (as shown) about 37°C. I recorded a high of 73°C, and an average of about 70°C during a real workload (not a stress test) of converting videos over the course of about 9 hours. I'm wondering if this is normal, because it seems high to me. Prime95 stress tests have only ever pushed it up to about 58°C. Does anyone else have a similar setup that can give me some perspective on this?

Hey everyone, so my PC is just over 5 years old now and it's safe to say it's starting to run into some issues. I'm not going to go into all of them now but just trust me <3. So before I go into the list I just want to mention that I am keeping my GPU and current storage (SSD & 2 HDD) and am also going to get a new HDD. I also wanted to say that I got the GPU at the start of 2018 so that's why its overkill for my other components (somewhat).... My current specs are - CPU : Intel Core i7-4770 COOLER : Intel Stock....GPU : MSI GeForce GTX 1080 *KEEPING*MOBO : Asus Z87-ProOS : Windows 10 64 BitRAM : 16GB DDR3-1600 (2x8GB)SSD: Samsung 850 Pro 256GB *KEEPING*HDD 1: 2TB WD Blue *KEEPING*HDD 2: 1TB Seagate 7200.12 *FAULTY OLD BOOT HDD ALMOST DEAD NOT KEEPING*HDD 3: 500GB Seagate 7200.14 *KEEPING* Now before I show my new list of what I am going to get I am going to talk about why I am upgrading and how many monitors I have etc etc.... I am upgrading because as I said my PC is slowly losing performance and is in need of upgrades. I am going to be using the computer for gaming, streaming, video editing and school work (plus anything else I will need it for) I have tried to future proof this PC so it will last me for hopefully another 5 years. I am running two monitors currently but somewhere down the line I will probably get a third. I already own all my peripherals so I am fine on that part. Finally, I live in Australia so obviously I am shopping in AUD. Ok and now for my list.... https://au.pcpartpicker.com/user/KYEISBOSS/saved/WG6Gf7

Hey everyone, I'm currently in the middle of choosing my parts but I just can't quite figure out which PSU I should get. My build will include an i7-8700K and a gtx1080. IN addition to that I intend to use the h100i v2 as AIO and a few HDDs and SSD. Do you have any advice on what would suit me best. I'd like to keep the PSU's budget under 80€ if possible. Do note that I prefer it to be well suited and pay a little more than having something that won't suffice. I don't have a preferred retailer I issue most of my commands through internet. As long as it works well I choose the cheapest, I have no brand preference. Hopefully you'll be able to help me.

Hi LTT, I want to build my 2nd PC coming from an AMD APU, Yeah Yeah laugh it up, it was cheap at the time lol. Anyway, I'm between getting a Asus or MSI board. I want to be able to stream on twitch at 1080p. Thanks!

I bought an I7 8700k and took it out of the box it was still in the plastic casing and I touched the pins (while it was in the plastic) should it be okay? I didnt touch the pins directly and there is a gap between the plastic casing and the Cpu itself

Is 600W enough for the 1080 it SC2 and i7-8700k with mild overclocking (4.7ghz) enough

I am planning on upgrading my cpu. My current one is an i5-4670k with an hyper EVO 212 for cooling. My question is whether I should get the 8700k or 7700k? Is the latest and greatest worth the extra little money? My plan is souly for gaming on this CPU. The games I like to play are battlefield and arma3 (if that matters). So, is it overkill to get the 8700k? I just want to make sure I have an amazing CPUs that won’t need to be switched out for a while.

Hello everyone, Please excuse me as this is my first post on the forum, but hopefully, this group can also help. I'm currently looking to upgrade from an i7-6850k to i7-8700k though I'm not entirely sure it'll be worth it either. My budget is around $500 (though this could go up $100 if need be) in USD (with no Sales Tax!). My computer is currently my gaming/recording/editing rig (yes, it has a full-time job) running three monitors. I've been having some issues in Overwatch or other simpler titles however whenever I try to record using the 'optimal' settings through GeForce experience. I'm only recording at a 10,000-bit rate for the accelerated movements on screen. I've also noticed some issues when trying to edit videos at a resolution of 4K (3 inner videos all at 1080p scaled down to fit) for a versus series I'm in charge of editing. I typically have to playback at half resolution in Premiere Pro 2017. I'm wondering if this could just also be some sort of bottleneck issue as well. I've currently got 5 storage drives hooked up (1 SSD and 4 HDD), as well as an Elgato Capture Card, installed into one of the PCIe slots. I've included a screenshot of the current build and proposed upgrade.

I just built a brand new pc, overclocked to chip to 4.9ghz on a stable overclock of 1.285v. Idle temps are 32c with CPU @76c under high load. ive seen plenty of videos showinga 5ghz stable overclock, but would a 5.1ghz overclock be feasible, if so how? Liquid cooler is a kraken x52(240mm)

Would a simple 140mm AIO loop be a viable cooling source for an i7-8700k if I don't plan on overclocking? My friend has the 140mm that they never ended up using and told me I could have, but I wasn't sure it would be enough.

Hi everyone, Long time reader of the forum, first time posting. I am looking for advice on a PC build that I am currently planning. I have purchased a few components already but need help deciding on other components and advice on the overall quality of the build. I want this to be a great experience for my first build. This is an RGB build. I want to use this PC for gaming/streaming and some VR experiences. Also to edit DSLR and drone footage and some graphic design. Any and all advice and critiques welcomed! I’ve heard great things about the I7 8700K for gaming but don’t know if I want to spend 350$ on a CPU any other suggestions? I may have to end up going with the 8700K. I have heard some things about the Ryzen 7 2700X as well but heard the 8700K is better. Let me know if you have any other suggestions. This is for gaming, and its my first build.

Hey i bought an engineering sample i7 8700k and i was wondering what I should do with it. I heard that intel would usually replace it with a brand new one, but i was wondering if any of you guys know if there is any reason that an engineering sample would be better(I bought it because it was $310)

Hey everyone, I am looking to upgrade my CPU from a i5-6600K to either a i7-8700K or a Ryzen 2700X. But I do not know for sure which one would be best for my use. I mostly will be gaming and the occasional streaming. The games that I mostly play are Rainbow six siege, Battlefield, and Farcry 5. I was thinking that the i7 would be the best choice for me seeing how I rarely use applications like Premier or Photoshop, but when I do it is for editing videos. But I can't really decide what to get. I am looking for some advice on what to get. P.S. I should also mention that I typically play on either 4k or 1440p, and my graphics card is a GTX 1080. Any advice would be much appreciated.
