So a pc got damaged while a power surge and I replaced a power supply since it wasnt turning on and when I did it said something like no bootable hard drive or something. It was a sata hard drive but a older one. I think the pc had like windows Xp or something. Should I replace the drive? Would that help?

I'd like to know what causes power supply failures (especially on generic power supplies) and under what circumstances will a burnt power supply damage other hardware? (e.g., if a psu was toasted due to overheating, will these potentially damage other hardware in my rig?)

So, I was laying in bed playing Xbox when my sister got me an envelope. It had a box with a couple of Trident Z RGB RAM modules, which is the first part for my first PC. I've torn computers apart before and fixed a couple, always grounding myself, but in my excitement I opened the box and pulled the modules to see them up close. I touched them in the heatsink and pins before I realised I could damage them and put them away immediately. I don't think I built up that much static (I've touched Xbox One's and 360's MOBO without proper grounding and they were fine, but I am a little worried about these ones. There weren't any signs of static discharge and the only way I could test them is on a friend's rig, so I'll only ask him if you suggest it is absolutely necessary. I found a couple of guys who think they killed memory with static but it may have been a random memory problem, and also a guy dancing in a carpet and then touching a ddr3 module, where it survived perfectly. Anyways, any thoughts? Experiences where static killed a component or you were scared you messed up?

Hello, I have an old External WD My Book HD. I can't acess some of my files, most of the folders used to look like these but now most of them look like these Some I receive an error message of being inaccessible, some of them look empty. I know that I probably won't be able to recover everything, but I would like to know if there is something I can do

Hey guys, So I'm putting together a cheapo build for a friend. Another friend has some RAM he's willing to give me, but has no idea if it works (his previous rig was water damaged). If the RAM is also water damaged could testing it in a working mobo damage said mobo? Thanks a lot for any help

I have a dell monitor and it was sitting on my desk last year when a storm broke out. My my ceiling cracked and water leaked in right on top of my monitor. The monitor works fine but there are water spots on the screen. I have tried to use desiccants, heat, and left it out to dry for over a year now. It is time for me to do something about it. Does anyone know how to fully get the spot out of there or get a great replacement screen for cheap?

Ok so I have managed to stabalise my overclock. Can you guys look at my results and tell me if you see any room for improvement. Do you think these are sustainable voltages to run. I use my PC mostly for gaming between 6 - 12 hours in a day. BTW the reason that the cpu voltage is so high is because I got a dog of a CPU that wouldnt stabalise at 4.5ghz when running cinebench unless I was feeding it 1.38v. 1.36v would result in Blue screening.

I'm giving up on blaming other things for breaking headphones, within 8 months i have broken two sets of senheiser CX3.00 and the AKG headphones that come with the S8 in exactly the same way. only one channel works unless you hold the cable in a certain way right at the 3.5mm headphone jack. Since i don't have the time to re-solder a new jack on them and senheiser's warranty service is laughable i need to buy another pair. What's the best yet cheapest set of senheiser or AKG earbuds i can get with a detachable cable? I want to stick with brands that i know. I've tried zip ties and glue to hold the AKG set just right but now it looks like a gave it 20 years worth of cancer... but it works at least........

Big PSA for users of these boards to avoid this firmware update until a fix is announced, so there's no chance of becoming a victim to it. Its reported that basically inside the bios menu voltages on the vcore are fluctuating between 1.5-1.7 which is very very high, where as usual voltage is closer to 1.2 or 1.35-1.45 when OC'd, and the max you can even set in the bios is 1.55 F8 (Gaming 5) & F6 (x370 K7) bios has also been uploaded by Gigabyte today allegedly fixing the Vcore issue F7 (Gaming 5),F5 (x370 K7) are no longer available to download and should be avoided Source's: http://wccftech.com/amd-ryzen-cpu-gigabyte-x370-damage-burning-bios-update/ https://www.techpowerup.com/236659/latest-gigabyte-x370-k7-motherboard-bios-broken-dynamic-vcore-up-to-1-7v

Before I sold my macbook pro 2010, when charging with a UK power block it gave me a a tingle sort of buzzing feeling when running my fingers across the aluminium chassis. This did not happen whilst running off the battery alone. My partner could feel it if he ran his arm across my skin. Despite the power being earthed in plug it still done so. I used several USB and my graphics tablet plugged into it. I would like to know if that sort of electrocution feeling could damage my peripherals, and when I had not used them for 2 weeks as I waited for my new tower-could plugging the things I had used in the macbook damage my new Pc. They work fine in spare laptop, just worried about our new high end one. Also say once I plugged peripherals from macbook into new Pc, then brought a new USB or plugged partners capture card in. Would that get damaged. Regards Alexis

I recently opened my case to insert a PCIe USB 3.0 hub. In the process I dropped metal tweezers (was using to straighten pins on USB socket on PCIe card) and now worried I may have damage motherboard? Am I being too paranoid?

CPU: i7 4790K Cooler: Dark Rock Pro 3 I used the cooler when I first got this PC. Needed to RMA it but took me months to do so due to one reason or another. In the meantime I used the Intel Stock Cooler. Temps would often go OVER 90 degrees when under load from games when I installed the stock cooler. RMA'd cooler and got a new one. I re-applied it a couple weeks ago and was stress testing it with AIDA64 and Intel Extreme Tuning utility. I even went as far as doing the FPU test all by itself. CPU temps would go up to 85 degrees celcius. Could this have damaged the CPU? I suspect damage because when I removed the cooler to re-apply the paste (I was shocked my temps were going over 80 degrees when I had such a good cooler), there were some kind of dark coloured marks on the CPU. I could remove them with my finger but I didn't know what they were. Almost looked like burn marks. Also, there was some kind of thin layer of liquid between the CPU and cooler metal surfaces, which on first glance looked like condensation. But it was weird. The cooler and CPU had an EXTREMELY tight seal so I don't see how moisture from the outside could have gotten in. It's worth noting at this point the thermal paste covered maybe less than half of the surface area of the CPU. So I suspect whether heat directly transferring between the metals of the cooler and CPU could have caused some permanent damage and the burn marks to the metal surfaces? I'm less concerned about high temps inside the CPU because while it was hot, it was within limits. I'm more concerned about the surface of the metals. That water-like substance around the thermal paste had trails connecting it to where the thermal paste was. Moreover, the paste looked kind of like it was burnt? What I mean by that is it looked like it had hardened, hence my thinking it had been burnt. Could this be as a result of faulty thermal paste? I purchased this paste in January 2016. It's the HT-H1 by Noctua

Hi guys, I put an old graphic card (GTX 970, fans facing up) on the desk and accidently spill a cup of water onto it. What should I do to check if it is still work? Is there anyway that does not require me to insert it back to my current motherboard? Since I am afriad it might damage my motherboard and new graphic card. I took out the some parts of this graphic card and saw a little bit water satins on the board. Thank you, guys.

Hey, Haven't been on here for quite a long time. Probably since 2016 or mid 2017. Curious though, as I'm quite rusty on a lot of things after being absent from here for a long time... My girlfriend recently spilled a drink, or something liquid, onto her tower, and it subsequently crashed - I honestly suspect that something is dead, but we have no idea of what it could be at this moment. She's attempted to remove different components (like RAM DIMMs, SATA cables, etc) and has found small droplets of liquid littering some of the connections, and she managed to clean that up with a Q-tip. Unfortunately, after cleaning up all of the liquid that she's managed to find, nothing will operate. No noises, no fans, nothing. All of the liquid hit around this area (I'll attach the image) Anybody able to help us out on this? Thanks, guys. P.S. yes, I know her computer is a little dusty. Don't question it, lol.

I just installed a new cpu cooler earlier today, when removing my old cooler the thermal paste had fused the cpu and the cooler together and ended up pulling the cpu out of its socket when it was locked in, i have a ryzen 1600x, the cpu worked fine when i first turned my pc on but the overclock reset back to 3.6Ghz (from 3.9) however now everytime i try to overclock even by a very small amount (0.1ghz) the pc conpletely crashes and the cmos needs to be reset, is this due to the cpu being pulled out of its socket, my new cooler is a kraken x62 rev 2, thanks

Hello Everyone! I have a problem that needs your expert opinion but before that here's my PC specs. Intel i3-8100 Asus ROG H370-F Thermaltake 500W non-modular T.Force 2666mhz 4GBx2 (8GB) RX 570 We just moved from the city to our province. The first day, I was playing some games on my PC and there was no problem. The pc is just placed on the floor which I think there could be static. After I played a game and woked up by tomorrow, I turned on the PC the GPU just exploded. I don't know what's the problem with it, so I removed it. I changed my video output to the integrated graphics of the cpu and it's still working. The only thing that it smells burning is the gpu nothing else in the pc seems wrong. Now the main question is; When I will buy a GPU which is a 5700XT, will it be okay? I'm afraid that if I'm going to put a new GPU it might explode again.

So I am trying to revive a ASUS ROG STRIX Z270H gaming motherboard. 3 pins were bent. I have been struggling to even have this thing to post. I purchased a BIOS speaker as im running out of ideas. non of the fans will run, it is an absolute dead nothingness from any LEDs other than the standby light next to my male fPannel pins and my rgb lighting. so the board is getting power, there is just no response from jumping it or using a switch. There is one thing im never able to get a straight answer from and that is, there doesnt appear to be a jumper on my CMOS pins. More ideas would be great

So I have bought a new "Ryzen 7 2700x" CPU and a "MSI x470 Gaming Pro" Mainboard. I installed all the components and Windows 10 Home, did the updates and started to install my first games. After 6h of runtime my PC suddenly went black and basically turned off. I thought "That was weird." and restarted the system. Everything booted and ran for a little bit like before, but I checked on the temps and In idle mode, a tool called "Speccy" told me my CPU was at 100 °C. Now I just thought "WTF?!" and Installed the tools from MSI that came with the Mainboard and after a quick install I checked on the temps there and they where at around about 30 to 40 °C while installing a game. That was much more likely and the CPU cooler, an ARCTIC Freezer XTREME, felt cooler as well. But I checked the Core Voltage and they were at 1.458V at this moment. I dont know if that is normal, but I think that is a little bit high. After that the system started to get unstable or something. When I started to load a program my whole PC freeze for 10 seconds and sometimes got completely stuck, so I have to shut down the pc and restarted. Now it sometimes restarts normally, but then has these freezes or it gets stuck while loading Windows. Might be that my CPU is a underperforming one and got damaged because of that or the Mainboard is bad, idk. So now it is shut down for safety. I don't necessarily want to overclock and now I think I should "underclock" it. Should I turn it down to 1.2 Volts and the frequency accordingly, or should I send the CPU and/or the mainboard back befor I do more damage to it?

I was playing witcher 3 when suddenly i smelled something like a burned material, im not quite sure what its smell really like, but im sure it was smell of something burned. At first it was a faint smell so i kinda ignored it and kept playing, then the burning smell came back, so i began sniffing around and somehow i smell the burned from my ps4 controller (i connect it to my pc to play the witcher 3) before i could turn off my pc, i heard some kinda popping sound and my pc suddenly switched off and turn on itself again on its own. Anyone knows why is that? And what is the problem?

Hello, i have some questions. I have a Sony x900f 4k tv and i would like to use the 3840x1620 resolution (forced 21:9) to play some games on ultra wide aspect ratio. I've read that doing so can permanently damage the TV and i should only use 16:9 and avoid black bars, is this true?. Also the tv is 120hz but due to the limited bandwidth of the hdmi 2.0 i have to use 60hz at 4k. I have made a custom resolution of 1440p at 120hz. Can this also damage the TV?

There doesn't appear to be a dead pixel...just a slight scratch. Tried applying some vaseline into it, left it for a few minutes, didn't work. Any other solutions that might work? Sorry if it's not too visible in my phone camera, it's the best I could do.
