If I download a file with data from my phone, the file does not download and an error "Your device could not connect to the server" comes up. There may be a problem with the server or the network. - Your device could not connect to the server. There may be a problem with the server or the network." I usually use Private Relay on my phone but even disabled it does not work to download the file with data. If I download with my home wifi instead, the download is slow but it works. Any solutions?

Considering "battery performance" and "screen quality", should the 12.9" iPad or the 11" iPad be preferred? Note: I will use it for reading PDFs, studying, taking notes, watching movies, TV series and videos, and rarely editing videos.

Summary In two related studies researchers have found a way to sidestep VPNs anonymizing features. One that targets everything but Android and releases all information to the hostile network. The other confirming a separate yet equally active bug in Android that leaks DNS information at specified, yet often situations. Quotes My thoughts I genuinely think that this has wide reaching implications for the tech industry at large. The Android Bug can be fixed more easily then the TunnelVision vulnerability. Which could lead a lot of security driven users to follow a protocol of connecting to their mobile device after making sure it is on fully, doing what they need to do, disconnecting their device, then disconnecting their phone. This leak and bug discovery affects security as a whole and I think it is interesting how LONG this vulnerability has been in the wild by researcher calculation. I have an iPad Air 5 64 GB tablet. Do you think it makes sense to sell it, add money to it and buy a Tab S9+ 512 or Tab S9 Ultra 512?

Before anyone gets pissed, this is not a defense of bad practices for any company but rather a genuine critique in the loss of quality in the Windows platform. I used to be an avid Windows fan and user (had the phone and everything), I switched to Linux for quite a few years and currently daily drive an M1 MacBook Pro. There are negative practices that Apple and Google both partake in which annoy me to no end (like the complete absence of repairability/upgradability in Apple Products or the spyware that Google's software has become). 1.) Ads/bloatware A paid product should not have sponsored applications installed nor should it install applications without my distinct permission. This kind of behavior is the mentality of a piece of malware. The fact that in Windows the only way I've found to turn it off too is using registry edits is ridiculous. Windows isn't the only ones who do this nor is it the only Microsoft product that does this, but I certainly find it to be the most egregious, especially considering it will reinstall these applications you've removed every other update or so. Also, Microsoft, MY CLIENTS DON'T NEED THE XBOX GAME BAR INSTALLED ON ANY OF THEIR MACHINES, LET ME REMOVE IT!!! 3.) Microsoft Accounts & Office 365 How come Microsoft Accounts are required to set up Windows 11 (I know the work around, but still)? I don't want one, nor do I want to have to set up every machine for my clients with one. Let it go. Apple I'm including you in this one as well because while you'll let me set up a machine without an Apple ID which is better, you still send out annoying reminders occasionally like Windows. Knock it off you two. Also how come an Office 365 Account can't also be a Microsoft Account but a Microsoft Account can also be an Office 365 account? If its an account through you, it's a Microsoft Account and it should behave as such end of story. 3.) Browser switching Stop with the guilt trip about Microsoft Edge! Yes I understand it is more efficient and yes Microsoft, you finally have a decent web browser built in, but people have traditions and platforms they prefer. Stop the guilt tripping, stop the pain in the *ss set up to change the default browser and calm down. Its one button after install to change your default browser in Mac, Mac will still let you know that Safari is better in their opinion, but after that they seem to just let it go, which is how it should be. Linux is even better with this, they'll just let you switch, no guilt tripping, no "this version is better", just a simple switch and done. 4.) Allowing non-administrators to install applications through their application installer I discovered something funny, non-administrator users can install applications on their work PCs for my clients as long as they use the .msix through Application Installer. Why? They're not administrators so they can't install applications on their own. I don't trust them with that power regardless of whether the application is from you or not. 5.) License Upgrading Sometimes machines with Windows Pro aren't available and we will occasionally (only during emergencies like someone is starting and needs a machine immediately) purchase a machine with Windows Home which is more readily available/cheaper for the same spec typically. We will then upgrade the license to Pro so that we can join the machine to the local Active Directory (why isn't this included in Home). To do this we need a Microsoft Account to run the purchase, why can't I just provide the payment details, YOU TAKE MY MONEY AND THEN ASSOCIATE THE LICENSE WITH THE MACHINE AND STFU! 6.) Killing Off Hardware Why are you not allowing some systems to upgrade to Windows 11 that are otherwise perfectly fine? I understand not everything can run, but there are plenty of 6th & 7th gen Intel chips that can run your shitty OS fine enough to merit a client to save a couple bucks in the short term. Plus these machines make for great second hand devices for those who don't have the cash for new hardware, so why not just let them run the OS. It's bad enough they want to use your products but now you have to gate keep them too? I get that some hardware is too old, but I think you're killing off way more than necessary and idk why. Also for those who work around it and get Windows 11 going on unsupported hardware, don't be a dick and put a watermark there, people usually do this to keep hardware they can't afford to replace atm going for just a bit longer. Apple, you're guilty of this too and personally this behavior is unacceptable!!! 7.) Phone Integration Phone Integration on Chrome OS for Android users and iMessage for iOS users is fantastic, Windows for some reason has not been able to get on board. Anytime I've used it or helped clients who use it, its constantly losing access, dropping messages, not getting notifications and the only thing that fixes it is to completely reset it, like what the heck? A lot of these complaints weren't present not too long ago, I actually loved Windows 10 in the beginning. I'm not here to just crap all over Microsoft and talk about how Apple is superior because it's not (title might be a tad click baity). What I want to point out and discuss is that there seems to be a major decrease in the quality of Microsoft Windows releases to the point where right now while I wouldn't by any means state that Apple or Google is king or anything, they're definitely at the moment the better options for most applications in my perspective, and that list of most applications is only growing. They're also less whiney about everything, I think thats what pisses me off the most. I feel like all of Microsoft's products except for Office have been going down the drain lately and it's sad. In WAN show Linus said "you want a hungry Apple" and I could not agree more! I also want a hungry Microsoft, I miss the Microsoft the made the 360 and released Halo 1-3 and was corporate but also a little edgy and willing to take some risks, but ultimately was determined to manufacture quality products despite the hiccups on the path to do so (Windows Vista). I feel like that Microsoft is dead and it's thrown a once life long Microsoft fan into the Apple eco-system. Hopefully it changes. Thanks for reading, I just needed to rant after a long day of dealing with Microsoft BS at work. Xbox is pretty much dead and honestly I'm so close to just liquidating my Xbox stuff and being Nintendo only. Nintendo has their own issues too with the whole emulator nonsense and copyright striking everything with their music, but they at least have exclusives and I don't see ads on the Home Screen of my Switch, I only see them when I go under Nintendo News which makes sense and is fine as long as it stays in there like it has thus far. Windows & Edge have continued to get whinier and whinier guilt tripping you to stay on Edge and begging people to upgrade to their half baked mess of an OS Windows 11 all while shoving Microsoft Accounts down your throat with Teams, using their products feels like talking to a possessive romantic partner whose worried you're going to leave them, its obnoxious. Windows Phone, they just killed it years ago after not putting anymore effort into it despite buying a whole company for like 5 billion dollars (really worried these studio acquisitions are a parallel to what happened with Windows Phone, a last ditch desperate half assed effort)

My iPhone is not up to date, nor do I intend on updating it. However, I’ve found that every other time I open the settings app the app sends me to the software update page. I can send it off the page and restart the app, but that doesn’t stop it. Is this happening to anyone else? Heres a video of this happening: RPReplay_Final1714049215.mov

I'm developing an iOS app that displays store locations on a map using Apple Maps (MapKit). I've limit the number of icons that can be displayed on the map to 100, but there's still huge performance issues and the app is very laggy even on modern iPhone models. What's the best practice when displaying a large number of icons on a map, should the icons be in PNG format with a small resolution (~10kb) or should the icons be vector (SVG) for best performance? Should I use the MapKit framework for iOS 17 or the UIKit approach?

Summary Research paper from Apple details ReaLM a local LLM model with 0.08B to 3B parameters which Apple researchers claim performs comparably with GPT3.5 across several benchmarks. Quotes My thoughts Apples ReaLM models detailed in the paper are 0.08B to 3B parameters. For reference GPT3.5 is estimated to be 175B parameters and GPT4 is estimated to be 1760B parameters. If the researchers aren't overselling their models, it's an enormous improvement in performance/parameters, so much that the model can feasibly run locally using neural engine acceleration within smartphones power and ram limitations. Facebook and Microsoft for contrast have and are acquiring multiple hundreds of thousands of Nvidia H100 accelerators to train and run inference of their LLM as a cloud service, which is expensive. It's wild something like Bing Chat is free, given how much it costs to run. If the performance of Siri powered by ReaLM are even close to GPT3.5, it could mean that Apple Siri-ReaLM will be much cheaper for Apple to run, and if Apple is able to run their LLM model locally on smartphones, it has also advantage for privacy of LLM use. Summary Apple has created a page on their websites where the user enters their current iPhone model and gets a list of reasons to upgrade to the 15-series. Interestingly, currently only the 11- or 12-series are selectable. The user then picks one of four iPhone 15-series models, and the list is generated with reasons to upgrade. It’s similar to the older “Compare” feature, but this new page only shows the differences. Quotes My thoughts Honestly I feel like Apple is getting a bit desperate to get users to buy new products, the title screams of desperation of wanting to give users FOMO. I’m a big tech nerd who usually wants the best, but my iPhone 12 Pro Max from 2020 is still serving me great. I know a lot of users are feeling the same way (maybe not on this forum though): that their smartphone is good enough - so why upgrade? If Apple made product that was innovative and revolutionary for real, then they wouldn’t need a list with all the subtle differences for the average user. My conspiracy theory is that the old “Compare” tool showed how much each “new” generation had in common with the previous generations, and that’s why they want to hide it and only display the differences. Also, wanting to give users FOMO by using their devices that are just a few years old is VERY hypocritical considering all their environmental focus. Hello My dad gave me his old apple monitor, because the computer does’t work anymore, but the monitor does. It has the apple mini display port and I bought an adapter to USB-C, so that I could connect my Apple MacBook Pro with it. It all worked well now I bought a windows PC which my boyfriend built for me. I don’t want to buy a new monitor since I already have the Apple one (and I’m honest - it fits my home aesthetic) So I was hoping I could connect my monitor to the PC! I bought an apple mini display port adapter to connect to my PC - but it didn’t work… Does anybody have a solution or is apple going to make me buy a new monitor? Here are some photos of the Monitor (I know the cable is broken get of my back)

Hello, I searched the forums and the broader internet but couldn't find a good comparison of an M3 Max vs an equivalent Intel or AMD processor. A lot of the comparison sites just don't have comparative fields for Apple vs Intel processors. (Aka price to performance calcs). Can anyone point me to a good Intel or AMD processor that would be on-par with an M3 Max chip? I certainly don't need an Intel Core i9-14900k, but I am looking forward to using a proper Desktop class processor. I have not built a computer for about a decade. I currently have a 16" m1 Pro MBP, and an m2 MBA for work. Looking to build a gaming, 3D modeling, and 4k video editing windows PC. I plan to game at 1440p and don't care about ray tracing. I won't be playing many AAA games like Cyberpunk or Tomb Raider, more indy titles. So 1440p at 120hz will be my target monitor. Perhaps a second monitor at 4k with great color accuracy but a low refresh rate. Thank you!

Summary Apple plans to allow some developers to distribute their iOS apps directly from websites in EU countries. However, developers must follow Apple's strict rules and meet notarization requirements to protect the integrity of the platform. Users must approve the developer in the settings of their iPhone and a system window will display information that the developer has submitted to Apple for review. Only major developers who meet specific criteria, including one million first annual installations in the EU, will be able to use this distribution method. Quotes My thoughts The fact that this is limited to only big major developers is such a shame, since this means that the ability to distribute iOS apps via websites will not available for 99% of all developers. Also, it's worth discussing if most users will even care to go trough the hoops of approving developers from websites just to avoid the App Store. Once again, Apple has made the option of distributing and downloading from outside of the App Store such a painful process for both developers and consumers that I doubt that the DMA (Digital Markets Act) from the European Unionen will have much effect at all in the end. Tips for limiting smartphone screen time and addiction?
creat0r posted a topic in Phones and Tablets
I have a really hard time controlling how much time I spend on my iPhone. Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok, Subway Surfers etc. they just suck me right in every time I grab my iPhone. I have tried and considered multiple different alternatives, and so far nothing has really helped: Limit Screen Time in iOS Settings for these apps: didn't help because you can continuously just click on the button to get more screen time. Delete addicting apps: made it super annoying to communicate with my friends since we communicate in group chats on Snapchat and a lot of features (like video messages) doesn't work on the Snapchat web app for desktops. Also, it was very easy to just re-download these apps. Buy an old "dumb" phone: since I have my own business I need to always have quick access to email, which is impossible on an old phone. Also, being able to get notifications if one of my stock investments suddenly would drop is really important. I might try to always have my iPhone's battery charged <20% so I can only use it for important SMS, email, and pay for food/travel with Apple Pay. Feels a little bit scary if the battery would die, though... I also though I could enable Down Time in iOS settings and have an advanced long passcode for it that I keep in my drawer at home (so I can't access it at work), but apparently you can only enable this for kids (if I'm not mistaken). Yes I know I should just stop, but that's not how addiction works. What's your guys experience with this? -
Summary Epic Games says Apple has taken down its newly reinstated developer account in the EU. In a blog post, Epic partially blames a tweet where they criticized Apple's reason for doing so. Epic says this hinders its plans to launch a competing app marketplace in the EU. The game maker also says that Apple has called them a "threat to their ecosystem." The tweet(s) in question: Quotes My thoughts I really like Apple's products, but they are a very toxic company and very hostile to their developers and users. As a iOS/macOS developer myself, I can say that Apple has made the EU's Digital Markets Acts as horrible for developers as possible by making it an unattractive, expensive, and frustrating experience when trying to use anything other than the App Store to distribute apps. I won't lie, I love my Apple Studio Display, it's the best peripheral investment I've made even beating out my Logitech MX Master and Mechanical for Mac series peripherals. Impeccable visual fidelity Built in charging via USB C Built in speakers that sound really good (relative to monitor and laptop speakers) Built in camera and mic that just work While not a specification item, I truly do love that its made of glass and metal on the exterior for the most part giving it an incredibly durable look and feel But as much as I love it, I can't help but think Apple could've changed a few annoyances and made it truly the best display on the market (not best bang for buck, just best in general for the general consumer market). Removable power plug, like really, I shouldn't need a special tool to remove it Better quality camera, there should be plenty of space for it Increased compatibility with Windows (a lot of us Apple users still use Windows, I personally keep an Intel MacBook Pro around just for Windows and playing games, even when the Intel Mac was my main machine I still duel booted it so I could play the occasional PC only game) 60Hz refresh rate for the price feels a bit low, like make it 120Hz I honestly feel if Apple were to make these adjustments in an Apple Studio Display 2 they could have potentially the best consumer computer display, especially when it comes to being a simple two cable plug and play operation.

Summary According to research firm Omdia, the Apple Vision Pro's bill of materials is $1,542. The most expensive part is the 1.25-inch Sony Semiconductor display, which enhances the virtual experience with high pixel density and lifelike colors. Apple pays approximately $228 for each Micro OLED display used in their Vision Pro headset. The second most expensive part in the Vision Pro is the main processor, the Apple M2 chip. Quotes My thoughts The high price of some components doesn't surprise me since there's some very high-end hardware in this product. It would be interesting to know what Apple's profit margin for the Vision Pro is, after things like R&D becomes part of the calculation. What's Microsoft's/Window's modern day equivalent to Apple's free* macOS creative apps like iMovie & GarageBand? For example, from my understanding, software like Windows Movie Maker is no longer a thing in Windows 11? My sister recently switched from macOS to Windows and is looking for a free and easy-to-learn iMovie-replacement. (*Yes I know they're technically not free since you're paying for them with the Apple tax for hardware and services).
