Hi Linus et al.
Got gifted a Dell Precision T3600 workstation from someone who claimed it didn't turn on and was taking it to be recycled. Long story short, after re-seating everything, it turns on just fine, and I have it running with a Linux distro. Ran some BIOS tests, and everything reports back as "healthy".
Much of this machine is better spec'ed than my current desktop (think i5 2400), so I was thinking of performing some basic upgrades to get it optimized, with the goal of using it mainly for photo editing.
Current specs are as follows:
Processor: Intel® Xeon® E5-1660 Processor (6 core variant)
RAM: Corsair 1600 MHz 2 x 8GB
Storage: 1 x 128GB SSD + 1 x 256GB SSD (I have a bunch of 1TB spinning drives sitting in a drawer, so potentially using this as a home server as well)
GPU: 1 GB AMD FirePro™ V4900
PSU: 625 WATT
So the advice I am looking for would be as follows:
I have instances where the machine chokes a bit on startup (where I need to press the power button twice to start it up), and I was thinking perhaps it may be a PSU issue or perhaps wiring in the case, so I was thinking of possibly rehousing the innards in a new modern case with a new PSU, but I am not sure which type of case and/or PSU I should be looking at. Ideally looking at not spending more than $150-$200 combined for those parts.
I was toying with the idea of a dual boot environment, and experimenting with a hackintosh (scientific purposes of course) and I will obviously need a new GPU for that endeavor. Thinking an AMD Radeon RX 580, but was looking for recommendations on that front. If I can get by with an older, cheaper generation GPU, I am all ears.
Thanks in advance for your advice!
