  1. I would expect the RAM post light to tell me bad RAM, but it passes. I actually did buy more RAM when trying out oh, about board #7 as the listed RAM was not on its QVL.. but that did not help. Can't change XMP or OC if you never get to the BIOS! The 2 that worked for a short while validated RAM and CPU, I was on the internet while it lasted. They just failed on reboot to recognize VGA (again). Not even those 2 started up without some kind of finagling of the VGA card, whether multiple reseating or swapping to a different slot.
  2. So since January I have been trying to upgrade from AMD FX 8320/Asrock 990FX Extreme4, to an x570 w AMD 3700x not because it is broken but because it is about that time. I have now tried about 10 Mobos, 2 of them did work for a short time after playing with different card slots, etc., but on reboot for drivers would no longer post. Each one that failed would hang on the VGA light (POST light indicators) I have tried Asrock Extreme 4 (4 times), Asus Strix 570E gaming (3 times), Asus Hero VIII, and now finally the Asus Strix 550F Gaming. I have ensured the CPU is seated, card seated, power in the CPU ports as well as reg 24 pin, vga card has power on its ports, the memory in use is Gskill Trident Z royal F4-3200C16D-32GTRS (on the QVL of most of those boards)... The video card works fine when returned to the old system, and is what I am looking at right now on this display, so it is NOT broken. Have used this current card, which I bought during the months of upgrade attempts (XFX Radeon 5700XT), and also tried both a Saphire Radeon 480 and an old amd 4850 card (which I also re-checked after the attempt, yep, works fine in my old system). Have used 3 total different power supplies in these attempts, PC Power n cooling 860, 750, and a new EVGA 650GS (on the off chance power was enough for my old system but not right for the new). Took that last Hero board in to a computer repair place to see if they would get different results; nope. For the life of me, I have a hard time believing my luck is so hideous that 10 boards are DOA (or shortly after A). Any suggestions welcome, HELP!!!
  3. Don't feel bad, several lookups I have seen from RAM manufacturers state that even if you buy identical RAM kits in pairs, they are not guaranteed to run all 4 at once. To be sure of no errors or glitches you have to buy a set of 4 initially, as then the manufacturer tests them as a kit that works. However, as you found out often you can get similar sets to work together with tweaks to voltage or underspeed. Sounds like you got your kit to a pretty reasonable place, so cool!
  4. I have heard it is fairly easy to make a media server from older pc, using VLC or similar. Not just play spotify, though that is a use, but to set up to play movies in the lving rm or in any room in the house over a good network. Then those movies aren't clogging your new computer setup. You could even set it to be a NAS type backup storage. That wouldn't need speed or a fast video card to still be useful. Whatever you decide, good luck!
  5. I have one that should arrive Thursday 6/25, I am following the shipping online. Having said that, I can only pray it works. I have had the most unlucky time since Jan trying to upgrade, with 2 mobos working for a short time before fail, and about 8 that would not post! If there were an "Un-lottery ticket" I would be buying some. Each time the board would stop the POST process at the VGA light and (for those with) code 90. That video card (Radeon 480) would work fine prior to and after in my old system. I even burned money on a new XFX 5700XT but it did not fix my luck on the last 2 boards (same VGA light). Last couple boards were unavailable for replacement (covid dang it) and had to get different board. Have tried Asrock Extreme 4, ASUS x570E, even ASUS Hero, now purchased the B550 (Gaming F) both due to use AND due to price gouging from other available boards or no available boards. (all from Newegg btw) Wish me luck!
  6. It should be in better shape than if you had been using it the whole time... I suggest planning on using it with the understanding that it "could" go out on you whenever its end of life should hit. You could breadbox the system early before putting it in a case and verify it that way. (blow the dust out and clean the old setup if not kept somewhere relatively clean) Good luck!
