  1. I'm looking to build a Truenas host which runs a much of containers using a mini-itx board and CPU i have presently in a bigger case. Looking for recommendations on basic case with the following requirements Ultra clean and basic. not loads of front IO don't need it. Preferably just one USB and power button Small as absolutely possible while accommodating at least 1 x 3.5 HDD (2 would be bonus) internal or external PSU Black preferred or can be painted black cheap. under $100 not an insane price for a basic case Thanks.
  2. What ever happened to Brian the electrician?
  3. I'm considering a steam deck but want to also look at alternatives. Has LTT reviewed any and have any suggestions for an alternative?
  4. Looks good but too expensive. Australia slaps that many taxes something cheap in one country becomes quite expensive.
  5. I'm about to purchase my first 3D printer. I don't like the fiddling with resin printers as a first printer so going with filament. Ideally it would be at least medium quality prints and not more than a couple hundred dollars. I'll spend more when I'm more confident in their use. Any recommendations?
  6. I need to buy a bunch of SD Cards and don't want to spend too much as they will be abused and probably lost by kids. I'm thinking I'll grab a few from AliExpress but don't want to get ripped of with fake ones. Has anyone ordered SD cards of 256 or 512 gb from AliExpress and where not shipped fakes?
  7. I really hate how google force yo to have an account (google account or non google) to keep a playlist, add comments etc. and when I go from YouTube to Google to search it keeps me logged in as that same account. To make it worse I don't want google to keep my web activity but if I turn it off my stupid Google Home stops working because they very conveniently made it a requirement. Any way i can work in YouTube logged in but in Google search no logged in?
  8. To say I'm a newb to soldering would be an understatement. I'm hoping someone can confirm my suspicions. in short I ripped a wire from a PCB and it took the pad with it. Looking at the PCB I believe the trace the pad was connected to is shared by 3 other solder points. 1. Looking at the picture you can clearly see the missing pad, is the section circled in red all one trace? 2. Can I just then simply solder the wire to one of these other solder points (A, B, C)
  9. Update to my own post, NordVPN has one.
  10. I have been using the Free ProtonVPN service recently. One of the features I like is they have an API that can query endpoint load and speeds. I built a script in my router that retrieve the status of all the endpoints via API and picks the fastest responding and configured the VPN to that endpoint and put that on a schedule to run every do often. API for Proton if anyone is interested (https://api.protonmail.ch/vpn/logicals) I'm now considering paying for the full service but before I commit to Proton I'm trying to find out if any other VPN providers have a similar API so I have some choices rather than being tied to proton. Anyone have any idea if other VPN providers have a similar API?
  11. Did a DDU and reapplied the Windows 11 drivers. Back to being solid as a rock and frame rates are about what I'd expect.
  12. Maybe i've been living under a rock but is there some kind of issue with Radeon Drivers and Win 11 these days? I installed Win11 a few weeks back during which time it install the Microsoft driver. I didn't notice as my system seemed very stable all things considered. Then I noted the MS driver so uninstalled it and installed latest Radeon drivers and all hell has broken loose. Blue screens, laggy graphics, regular hands etc. I've gone back to the MS driver and will see but is this a known issue and if so any fix as yet?
  13. It's a chinese knock odd mini-its board. My case only takes mini-itx and while I didn't want to do a major upgrade I also refused to pay over $300 for a LGA 1150 mini-itx motherboard so I got this one. As I said it's got an nvme m.2 slot and i plugged in my sata m.2 ssd but not detected in bios. I{m assuming the nvme slot works but I dont have a nvme ssd to test with.
  14. I recently upgraded a few parts in an old PC including the motherboard. This motherboard has a m.2 nvme slot however I realized that I only have space m.2 sata ssd's. Simply plugging it in did get recognized as expected. Is there convertors available to use a m.2 sata in a m.2 nvme slot?
  15. Update - Replaced MOBO working now.
  16. I don't need sheer GHZ rather I need cores to dedicate to a large number of virtual machines. Ideally i want one that has more than 4 sata ports also.
  17. Thanks. An interesting option but if I am going to do this excersie I want to go with as many cpu cores as I can. This one wouldn't be an upgrade and since its BGA no upgrade options later on. Anyone know of a mini-itx LGA 2011 motherboard?
  18. I plan to build a new TrueNas server to replace my old on one bastardised from an old Inspiron 7010 SFF and various parts from the junk heap. I've decided the case is going to the JONSBO N1 Mini-ITX NAS Chassis as seen the below. I don't have a huge need for power or clock speed just CPU cores for my various VM's. I'm running low CPU intensive VM's and jails only. No render farms or anything crazy. I am running Plex but I automatically convert media to a format that doesn't need transcoding on the fly so not CPU hit there (usually) and since TrueNas core doesn't seem to support GPU pass through I cant accelerate that hence why I just convert everything to a native format supported by my media players. I have had decent experience with the Chinese MOBO and CPU's from Aliexpress in the past so I'm going to go for a mini-itx MOBO from Aliexpress and the best Xeon I can find (one with the most cores) that will fit the MOBO socket I choose. My question is I need at least 32GB ram, what Chipset do I need to support this amount at a bare minimum?
  19. I have a need to buy as large number of 64 and 128gb microSD cards. In my country the taxes makes these ridiculously expensive. I am well aware of the dangers of fake USB's from places like wish and aliexpress but has anyone ever purchased some microsd cards or know of a seller on aliexpress that is trustworthy to provide what they actually advertise?
  20. I;ve had a PC with a 100% legit copy of Win 10 installed for 5+ years on a home build machine. Worked flawlessly for years until the mobo died a month ago. Order a new mobo and installed it today. Didn't even need to reinstall windows everything worked fine until a few hours later. Suddenly i have to reactivate. Ok sure makes sense so I go to reactivate it. Guess what? MS f*ucked me in the a** According to MS website the error code says I have a valid license but to much hardware has changed and i have to buy a new license. Are you joking?
  21. Wondering if LTT or anyone else has done some investigation and monitoring of these JGINYUE or any other Chinese manufactured motherboards to determine if they are trustworthy. With all this speculation and banning of certain Chinese brands by various governments you wonder if these or other Chinese brands are not secretly sending information off back to china or anywhere else. http://www.jginyue.com/
  22. Well CPU and GPU fans run which is all the signs of life I get. But I just plugged the PSU into another PC with same GPU and 100% working. So i'm gonna call the PSU as ok.
  23. Sadly the problem got worse. First it would power up CPU, GPU and case fans but get no post with 2 different CPUs. After that it just doesn't power up at all now. Nothing. Like its not even plugged in. Time to put a bullet in it I think. Question now is do I pay $200 for an LGA1150 MOBO just to test my CPU's or just start from scratch. I was totally happy with my rig it did what i needed it too, no need for latest and greatest. Now im looking at a whole new build. Someone should start up a PC part exchange site where you can swap or trade part for part. Surely there would be some use in that for those who just need an old part to test something etc.
  24. Sigh still no life. Swapped out Xeon CPU for a known good CPU (as of last time it was in the mobo) and nothing. Pulled the CMOS battery same issue. Without another LGA1150 mobo I cant confirm the CPU's are good but I cant imagine why they wont be. So now I am screwed with a capital S forced to use an iMac (yuk) to work from home.
