In and of themselves bigger drives are not more durable. What makes them so in this sort of situation is there are many more memory cells available to the wear leveling algorithm.

Really good to know that. I never really have delved into the inner workings of SSD drives.

I know that people have been generally positive with Unraid in recent years, though I can't speak for how effective it would be for your specific uses

The only M.2 riser I have used us an Asus card which was highly proprietary, though I think this particular one is s more suitable for you

Thanks, I will keep that in mind.

Given how small the db are, I wouldn't be concerned about finding the fastest NVMe drives. Durability is more important.

I would suggest using 2x4TB rather than 2x2TB. Much more than needed but should extend lifetime.

Bigger drives are more durable. I did not know that , thanks for the advice.

What are the clients doing? You might not need raid for speed, but I definitely recommend it for redundancy

Some software like Unraid might work for you

Pretty much read/write data operations. And yes, that is the only reason I am going to run RAID is for redundancy.

I have used Unraid on media server at home but, that was years ago. It is still a pretty good option then?

It depends on the availability of parts in your region. Epic Rome CPUs as well as 3000 series CPUs are extremely potent for huge scale like what you described, so I would suggest that to start, assuming you are comparing similar generations of AMD vs Intel (when Zen 2 processors came out they dominated Intel in the server and prosumer space)

Availability is pretty much the same as in America. Oh yeah, I did not even consider the Epyc CPUs. Thanks

Still gota figure out the RAID stuff though.

  5. Budget (including currency): 7.5K to 10K US (Can be cheaper if possible)

    Country: Japan

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Used to run a single application with daily users of about 300-400 users on two SQL Sever instances. Each database will have the potential size of up to 500gb

Other details : I was thinking that I could use 2 x 2TB nvme storage in mirror RAID (Or any suggestions on how many storage drives are needed with the single available being at least 2TB). Except I need advice on how to set up RAID and alerts if a drive fails as I have never done it before.

I am not sure what is better,  a single Threadripper CPU or dual Intels?

With memory I was thinking of 256gb to 512gb of ECC Memory?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I cant help with the headphones but I use DS4Widnows http://ds4windows.com/ to enable ps4 controller use on the pc.

There are presets on there or you can remap buttons as you need to.

I just did a preliminary check and it seems to be working just like PS4 with that software. I will check with my son if the audio works as normal.

Plug it into the PC via USB and works with Fortnite no issues.

Just get a  PC headset and he can carry on as normal.

Don't need that for Fortnite, windows recognises the DS4 as a controller.

I tried with just the PS4 controller and Bluetooth connected and it was't working with Fortnite.

  7. Hwy All,

My son loves playing Fortnite on PS4, however I just finished a PC gaming build and I want to make the experience the same as the PS4. I was able to get things working on Steam, but Fortnite does not use steam.

The first issue is that he wants to use the PS4 controller. How do I set it up the be able to use it. BTW, I have already figured out how to link via Bluetooth.

The second issue is how to enable headphones on the controller. He plays with his friends and he plugs his headphones into the controller to speak with them and get sound from the game.

Any help would be much appreciated.

My first move would be check connections and make sure they’re seated firmly.  It’s not impossible there is just so very much rgb you’re running out of power I guess.  How much rgb is there and what is it connected to?

    Thanks for the reply.

    I have,

    9 x 140mm Fans

    5 x 120mm Fans

    2 x 360mm Distro plates

    1 x 500cc Pump reservoir combo

3 x Thermaltake RGB Controllers with sata power

    PSU 1250w

I've tried 2 kits, Team T-Force Delta RGB 3200MHz CL16 and Klevv Bolt X 3200MHz CL16 (which I use right now), both of them have the same problem and I've tried same methods, none of them works. Is it motherboard failure?

I can't say that it is a MOBO failure, but I also have encountered the same issues you have on many MOBO's. I am here mainly b/c I also want to know why this happens. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Pretty rough, but did you have a particular reason preference for the Seahawk?

Looks like there's a Zotac waterblocked card for 184,045: Zotac 2080 Ti

or alternatively an MSI Trio Ccard for 164,444 MSI Trio and the corresponding waterblock for 24,618 Waterblock for MSI Trio

Oh man. I knew I should have consulted with people here before I went ahead and bought my hardware. Thanks for the links BTW.

  11. Hey All,

    AORUS XTREME GEN 1

    ThreadRipper 3970x

I woke up this morning to an error on my AORUS XTREME Mobo and it would not post. Long story short I had to take out and re-sit every RAM stick, GPU and memory to be able to get it to post again. So I had to re-install Windows again.

    The problem,

I was looking at the BIOS ver and it was well out of date and there was quite a few hardware compatibility issues being addressed in the updates since the version I had. So I updated the BIOS from Windows, which is recommended by GigaByte. But now I can't get into Windows and each time it goes to load it reboots back to the BIOS. Can someone tell if they have also had the same issue? Was the issue that the BIOS was so out of date that Windows was not able to boot with the new one? B/c the BIOS layout is COMPLETELY different to the one it came with.

Needless to say I am doing a clean install, so I am not asking for a solution.

    Cheers

I wouldn't expect a hole lot out of that CPU. My 3900X does it's own thing and it's pretty good at it. They boost on their own depending on temperature and without anything it manages like 4.6ghz on one or two Cores.

I'd expect the 3970X to behave similarly.

Can you update me again on what the hell that beast PC is used for? ?

Oh Really. So the standard boost is just fine? I was hoping for better numbers in CineBench etc.

And the main use is Microsoft Word, I need it to open a few milliseconds faster. ?

Seriously, I program and compiling can take some time, but with this thing it is over in an instant.
