Volemic got a reaction from DildorTheDecent in Threadripper 3960x running hot on a custom loop!
Hi everyone, I was hoping to get a bit of advice on a new system I've just put together (first custom loop), My 3960x is idleing at about 60-65 degrees according to package temps on HWINFO and HWMonitor, the bios is recording CPU temp as about 10 degrees less than that, but still idle at 50-55. I haven't properly tested extended load temps, but it has gotten up to mid 70s with some stress. I really can't work out why it's running this hot, and was hoping to get some advice from the gurus!!

    and now for some specs...

CPU: Threadripper 3960x (everything is set to auto in bio, apart from XMP which is enabled)
    Motherboard: Asus Zenith II
Storage, Sabrent 1TB PCIe 4 NVME, Sabrent 2TB PCIe 3 NVME, Samsung 970 Pro 1TB Nvme
GFX Card: Nvidia 2070 super, mild overclock, idles at about 40 degrees, fans not working at this point
    SFx: Sound-blaster AE-5
    Ram: 4x 16GB Trident Z Neo CL16 (Hynix)
PSU: Seasonic Snowsilent 1050W Platinum rated
Case; Lian Li O11 dynamic XL

    Watercooling setup:
    + EK G1 Distroplate
+ EK Velocity cpu waterblock (covers entire IHS) - hand screwed, well seated
+ Thermal paste used - Thermal Grizzly kryonaut !! This is the only questionable bit, when I put on the thermal paste, I spread it myself with the included spatula, so I'm not sure whether I spread it too thin and whether this would make a temp difference of 10-20 degrees
+ 2x 360 rads, top rad: EK PE; Bottom rad: EK XE
+ 7x Corsair LL120s (note this is the white version, which has higher static pressure), however they are all exhausting
+ EK 3.2 DDC PWM pump - The initial pump that came with the distro plate was the 3.1, so I replaced it.
+ EK 12/16 soft tubing all round

    Some extra notes:
+ I usually have my fans on quiet and pump running at 50% (approx same flow rate as original 3.1 pump), however even if I increase these to 100% I'm still not getting sufficient temp drops
+ only micro bubbles in the loop, nothing too interest
+ Loop was extensively leak tested prior to operation
+ The U bend on the distroplate is to bypass GFx cooling... I wasn't keen to customise the 2070 super as I want to get a 3080ti when it eventually comes out

Any advice is much appreciated! Thanks a lot :)
