  1. Well fair enough cant say I dont blame you cuz its long, but I already own the crosshair v formula so its a non-issue
  2. Hell all, I'm starting a new PC to go along with my new bedroom at my current house and I haven’t actually used my PC in over 10 months now which is where something interesting happened. A friend of mine (Frank) who is a builder and is also doing a project on my house right now has been complaining about his computer a bunch. I have said to him in the past that I enjoy building PC's and play games on mine/do video editing and Photoshop on mine for school and he has always responded with a sort of "sounds nice" kind of attitude. He is about 45-ish and I'm 18, we're long-time friends and he is really friends with my mum and dad, and I'm friends with his son but he is more than a family friend and such. So one day when he is around, he does the usual; I make him a cup of tea and generally chit chat and he starts to moan and whine about his PC being slow and that he might go out and buy a new one soon, so I suggest that I could build him one that is better and more value/money for him. With the previous responses he has had in the past he just reacted like, "WOW really? YOU know how to do that? Is it difficult?" so I downplay it like "yeah I do it all the time etc." (Do it all the time in the sense that I completely disassemble my PC clean it rebuild and configure it every 3-6 months, but haven’t done so in 10 because I'm not using it so I honestly saw no point and there isn’t anywhere I can move it to actually use it). So I ask him if he'd like that and he accepts, so after that I ask him "How much exactly are you looking to spend?" now he is the owner of the building and contracting business itself so I know that he pretty much only uses it for emails, word, excel and internet browsing and other non-demanding stuff, so basically an office PC, but he said that he would like to use 2 monitors (after i suggested it to him and he did not know it was possible and he said yes) and after explain what RAM is and does he decided he would like more than he has. So even before asking him I am expecting him to say about £350 - £400 or £500 maximum. He then responds with "oh about £1,000 ish maybe £1,500". I'm in shock and am like "wow ok" and I asked him if I could work out a deal. I have done this in the past with people and most recently my parents. What I did with my parents was I said "Well can I spend that money on new stuff for me and I'll give you some of my old stuff that’s still good and make up any differences with either parties prices on my own" which is what I have done with my last rig. Now with Frank's new PC being about £1,000 and Intel 2011-v3 and Nvidia's GTX 900 series just out I saw an opportunity. I asked Frank if I could do that kind of a deal with him and he said that it would be fine. In the mean time I have another deal going on the side with a friend of mine. My current rig at the moment is pretty good: CPU: AMD FX 8320 Heat sink: Noctua NH-D14 SE2011 RAM: Kingston HyperX 16GB (2x8GB) 2133 MHz Motherboard: Asus Crosshair V Formula AM3+ 990FX GPU: Asus GeForce GTX 780 3GB DirectCUII PSU: Corsair AX860W 80+ Platinum SSD: Samsung 850 500GB HDD: Western Digital 2TB Green Drive (7,200RPM, 64MB Cache) Case: Corsair 600T White So with me planning on upgrading to Socket 2011-v3 and a GTX 900 series I figured I didn't need the GTX 780 any more so I asked my friend if he'd like to buy it off of me (He has a GTX 650 at the moment) and he said that sounds good so we agreed that he would buy it off of me for £300 and I would take the GTX 650 off of his hands too. I was planning on using the GTX 650 in Franks PC for dual monitors and more or less giving him most of my PC (or selling it to him however you want to look at it). I did not want to rip Frank completely off so I did want to give a very very good PC so that it would last him a very long time. So for the PC that I wanted to get out of this I would like to have a 1080p or higher monitor at least since I have never had one and have only every used at most a 1680x1050 monitor. Also in the past 4 months I have started a media college course in which I do a LOT of Photoshop, video editing and 3D modelling in so I wanted something powerful, I wanted Intel because I have never before used Intel on my own personal machine, I also wanted enthusiast so I wanted Intel's X99 Platform LGA 2011-v3. So here is what I have planned for the first rig (AKA Franks Behemoth): CPU: AMD FX 8320 Heat sink: Stock RAM: Kingston HyperX 16GB (2x8GB) 2133Mhz Motherboard: Asus Crosshair V Formula AM3+ 990FX GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 650 2GB GDDR5 PSU: Aerocool 650W 80+ Bronze HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F1 750GB (7,200RPM 32MB Cache) Case: Corsair 600T KB/M: Cooler Master Devastator Bundle The only things I have to purchase are the KB/M, the HDD, and the PSU. The only problem I have at the moment is; is this PSU any good/reliable/provide enough power? This puts Franks PC cost for me at: HDD: £14.94 KB/M: £24.32 (CCL Computers) PSU: £37.62 (Amazon.co.uk) Total: £76.88 Now here is what I'm planning on having my system ending up as: PCPartPicker part list: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/XCGg4D Price breakdown by merchant: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/XCGg4D/by_merchant/ CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor (£303.54 @ Aria PC) CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 SE2011 CPU Cooler (Purchased For £0.00) Motherboard: MSI X99S SLI plus ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard (£154.79 @ Scan.co.uk) Memory: Crucial 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory (£142.02 @ CCL Computers) Storage: Samsung 840 Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (Purchased For £0.00) Storage: Western Digital BLACK SERIES 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (Purchased For £0.00) Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 970 4GB STRIX Video Card (£284.99 @ Amazon UK) Case: Phanteks Enthoo Series Primo Aluminium ATX Full Tower Case (£197.22 @ Aria PC) Power Supply: Corsair 860W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply (Purchased For £0.00) Monitor: Dell U2515H 60Hz 25.0" Monitor (£254.70 @ Scan.co.uk) Total: £1337.26 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2015-02-17 01:03 GMT+0000 In addition to this I'm also buying IC Diamond thermal compound some air duster and Isopropyl alcohol and maybe a grounding cable for the building process. So as you can see by what exactly it is that I'm buying I figured well no point in 1080p because 4K is our but no point in getting 4K if i can’t run anything and scaling is still an issue and due to my budget constraint this is a sort of pseudo budget workstation/gaming rig that I’m building here. Sorry if this has been a long post but I hope you enjoyed hearing all this and if anyone has any suggestions or tips I'd be very thankful for them will post a build log too when I start all of this.
  3. Oh wow that's so cool thanks brother man! Now I can't wait because for his new machine he wants to spend £1,000 but what I'm doing is basically giving him my old PC and he is just buying me a new one. I HAVE NEVER HAD INTEL ON MY MAIN PC AND I CANT WAIT NOW, ESPECIALLY CUZ IM GETTING A 5820K AND A 970! So happy that I can do this now :3
  4. Hmm what if his old machine is an OEM machine and I don't have the disk? Will the OEM sticker on the side of the PC case do? And just to be safe rather than sorry, does the windows backup save his emails? That was main priority for him, being that he owns a contracting business. Thanks, and sorry if I'm just being stupid about all this
  5. I know it's dumb but I'd rather keep everything in Windows so its easier to deal with, is there no way to do this just using Windows? If I can't I don't mind
  6. Right ok cool thanks man, as I said I've never really done this before but is that process somewhat straightforward? Like is it in the Windows utility and I just follow the steps? I actually have a Samsung 840 500GB and I got the kit for it so I'm actually pretty familiar with this but the cable cant power regular 3.5" HDD's and I'm quite sure that you need Samsung drives to be supported for the tool, but thanks anyway man Most technical thing I've heard about hard drives in a long time. So I guess that I'll just take your word on it and say you are right :3 So how technical or complicated is creating a system image? Is it just following steps from windows? Or is there a more comprehensive guide I can get or be shown? I'm not inept with all of this, it's just I'm unfamiliar with this process as I have never done this before and if I can make it easier for me to do and he gets all of his stuff and I can still get my new PC from him AND get paid then its all win-win-win But thanks all for the feedback I'm feeling better about doing it this way by the second :3
  7. Hey people I just had a few questions about a new build for someone that I'm doing for a friend of mine. I just wanted to know what is and what isn’t backed up or restored from the old PC? He currently has an old and very slow 320GB HDD that is 5,200RPM with 8MB cache and is running Windows 7 (don’t know if 32/64 bit) and I’m planning on giving him a faster 1TB 7,200RPM 64MB cache HDD but can I put the new hard drive in and back up to it so that I can just move the new HDD with all of his old stuff onto the new PC without having to re-buy windows and start from scratch. There are a few main things that I’d like to know if it is backed up because he runs his own business and has a lot of details for lots of his clients which I’m sure is backed up (like word docs and whatnot). But the biggest thing would be is his E-mail, he uses Outlook so if I did a backup and restore using the windows utility would all of his E-mail settings and old E-mails be saved? I’ve built many computers before but they have mostly been fresh starts so clean installs and I was planning for this but I was thinking I could save some money on a new copy of windows. Any help or answers would be great and if any details are needed I’m happy to provide. Thanks in advance!
  8. I see your point but I don't like the TJ11 because it's just too big, I'm going from a Corsair 600T as well but as long as it doesn't feel insanely cheap from the plastic I don't mind that much. I just don't want to put vast amounts of effort into a case to get say 2-3 things looking clean, which is why the Phanteks case looked appealing to me. Also how thin are we talking?
  9. ^ Agreed :3 I'm such an ASUS fanboy
  10. Since I've been considering it I've watched it a few times hahaha thanks, any ideas on how much plastic there is on the outside of the case and if there is, does it feel cheap or is it easily recognisable to stick out of the cases' general aesthetics? Really my only concern but I think that I will probably be getting it but just wanted to settle any doubts I had of the case before I went ahead and bought it. Thanks anyway bro
  11. Recently a friend of mine told me he wanted a new PC, he is a contractor, and mainly wants it for emails, accounting and other very basic stuff. But he told me he has £1,000 to use to I asked him if he would mind doing some switching around of hardware parts and buying me some stuff and me giving him my old stuff, which he was fine with. What this meant was that I now finally have a chance to go Intel and I'm switching from AM3+ to LGA 2011-V3 which is nice. So I am getting myself set up with the platform and just getting ready for better parts in the future like a better motherboard and RAM etc. so I'm buying relatively cheaper parts like a Gigabyte mobo instead of an ASUS one that I would like. But one thing that I would not like to replace down the line is the case. I wanted something big and that people come in and say 'Wow thats cool man!' sort of thing and the same goes for me as well. But I didn't know what case to choose. It came down to the Phanteks Enthoo Primo and the Silverstone TJ07. I like the TJ07 but it seemed kinda barebones to me, as if I would have to do some (if not a lot) of modding and work arounds to make it look clean and cool. But the Enthoo Primo looked like it had more going for it in terms of looking clean and support for stuff like watercooling, expansion and the fact that you get like 5 or 6 fans with the thing, but because I havent seen either in person I dont know how much plastic is on the Enthoo. I like the idea of a full metal case and I was wondering how people like the Enthoo compared to the TJ07 or am I being insane? Thanks in advance
  12. I'm actually already considering buying this for some 3D modelling stuff for school so getting one anyway would be so cool! I wish I used this forum more often
  13. Google glass is now officially released in the uk for £1,000 as well as addon's like lenses and earpieces. Would so buy one.... if I had any cash http://www.google.co.uk/glass/start/ https://play.google.com/store/devices/details?id=glass_shale
  14. OK OK. I know its dumb but I do want a sound card. I feel asthough my PCI-e lanes are useless. I do not know of any high quality DAC's available. I use my PC to do high grade audio engineering and gaming. The assumption in my head is that a SOUND CARD makes the SOUND BETTER (i know that is incorrect within itself i am using it in the broadest sense). Any high grade DAC or sound card suggestions are welcome (or both). I would like to not be told or assumed to be stupid. Thank you.
  15. OOooooooh looks nice any good? I do love me some ASUS thanks bro I'll look into that
