  1. From in a linux distro you mean right? i was gonna do that first before i did a format or anything but since backing up to a disk will take a while ive started on moving stuff now
  2. V is another partition on the E drive i partitioned a while ago, trying to get off what i can before i possibly need to do a full format on it to fix the problem.
  3. I went to try and resize it again earlier but even though it shows the full size, the resizeable amount is what free space i have left after the last partition didnt work. For reference it is a 480gb with less after formatting, and it had around 85gb free when i tried to partition 70gb of it. So even though it shows the full drive size it now says the 70gb i tried to partition is used and the remaining bit i was leaving free is now all that is free. Another Screenshot for reference. Also dont mind drives V and E they are externals, trying to do what i can with my data before it can get worse.
  4. Diskpart lists 2 partitions, however one is only a small reserved amount and the other is the full 447GB that shows in the previous screenshot.
  5. After selecting disk 1, it confirmed the disk, then i typed the show partitions command but it just gives me a list of other commands, doesnt show any sizes or partitions. If i cant get it working in windows ill give that a go, i already have a bootable ubantu usb in a draw somewhere i can use.
  6. Alright so i couldnt figure this out myself and google also didnt help, neither did a restart. What i did was try to shrink a volume so that i could add another partition in windows' 'create and format hard disk partitions' app. However after i changed the size i wanted, etc and clicked ok, the window froze. i left it for a good 30 minutes, and as i wasnt making that much of a change to a relatively small drive and as such would definitely not take that long, i closed the window and tried to reopen it and see if that would do anything. However it couldnt connect to the virtual disk service or something to that effect. Restarted pc, and now the drive in windows file explorer has shrunk to what i wanted, however in the partition window i used in the first place to shrink it, its showing the volume as not shrunk even though its not full capacity, will attach screenshot for reference. Is there anyway to resolve this without w iping the drive as i dont have any space on other drives to back up data. Hopefully its not just me being a moron. Thanks in advance for any help given.
  7. Thanks, Just didnt want to kill the second GPU if its not running but the PSU powering it was.
  8. Not sure if this would be the right forum for this but anyway; Today I was thinking about general pc upgrades and the like, and had an idea. Before i start, Ive done some research into this and i know it wont do much, but i did it for the sake of it anyway. Long story short, i have a second PC of spare parts i can use in a pinch if something goes wrong with my main rig, and i was thinking well since i dont use it that much, why dont i chuck the gpu out of that into my current system (non SLI of course). Only thing was that my current power supply doesnt have an extra gpu connector, so even though it would have been enough i couldnt use it. Basically what i did from here is got my 2 computers together, put 2 gpus in one and connected the second one to the power supply in the other and then booted them both. The reason im posting about this is I dont know how safe this is component-wise, as i dont want to damage anything. Would leaving the second power supply on in the second pc do damage to the gpu it powers in the main pc when its off? or since the gpu isnt trying to draw power from the power supply will it be fine?
  9. Definitely a problem with some part of your cooling set up. I had a similar issue myself, but I fixed that pretty quickly. (same CPU and GPU as well) What I would do, is check that your CPU heat sink is attached correctly and has firm contact with the CPU, and make sure there is enough thermal paste, but not too much. A small blob no bigger than 5x5mm should be applied. Also, a common thing people sometimes miss when installing CPU heat sinks is that some models may need you to attach a mounting bracket first to ensure proper contact with the CPU. What happened to me is I installed my CPU heat sink (deep cool something, cant remember), and after I had attached it and got my computer started, it had come loose due to me not fully pushing pins through to the other side of the motherboard to hold it in place. As soon as I noticed the issue I turned it back off and re applied thermal paste, and made sure it was securely attached this time round, and now it hasn't hit temps above 50C even in long hardware intensive gaming sessions. Something else to check, would be to check if your CPU cooling fan is plugged into its power pins and working, as well as your other exhaust and intake fans on your system, and make sure they are taking in or expelling air in the right direction. I doubt your cooling is as bad as my situation was, as mine had completely dis-attached from my CPU, but as I mentioned, best options are to check and reapply thermal paste, make sure it is secured correctly and the fans are functioning as intended.
  10. I run off a nvme pcie m.2 ssd, otherwise I would agree with the HDD theory, and also if it was the GPU playing up or being loose I would expect something to happen with the display rather than just freezing because I use my GPU as my video output, and if it came loose, I would think it would disconnect the picture for a second or something first, rather than just freezing the image. I feel like it could be something else, like as you said possibly some loose connection or an internal short, although I made sure all my cables were connected well.
  11. My computer does something similar, so does one of my friends computers. If either of us slightly bump our computers, like just enough to make the case move/tilt/wobble the slightest, our pcs will freeze. It won't restart or anything, screen will just stay as is, and no matter what we do it takes no input and we just have to hard restart it. Both of us have checked our cables and they all seem very well plugged in, so I'm interested to see what others have to say here with what they experience and how they've fixed their issue or worked around it.
  12. Okay so first forum post, so excuse any newbie errors. Also I did have a look around the forum for similar issues, but couldn't really find one that solved what I was dealing with. Long story short, i was using a gaming laptop for 2 years, until for some reason its stopped working, and I haven't had the time to get it looked into. So anyway I part harvested that along with spare parts lying around my house and mates houses, and ended up with the following build (this might help someone tell me what I've totally screwed up, hence why I'm listing this stuff first since its a bit of a mess) : - Adata 256GB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD from my laptop as the boot drive - 1TB 2.5 inch HDD (cant remember the brand, i think it was a 7200rpm not sure) also from my laptop - EVGA GTX 970 Superclocked ACX 2.0 swapped out from an old build - Intel Core I5-6500 (3.2ghz base) - 12Gb DDR4 2133mhz RAM - Biostar TB250-BTC Pro V6.0 Motherboard - Thermal Take 650W PSU - Some deep cool CPU air cooler - Windows 10 Anyway, those specs shouldn't be a problem playing anything on 1080/60 with high / ultra settings, for the most part anyway. Recently though, after putting this build together, I've been getting frequent stuttering while running games at a capped 60fps. Never drops from 60fps, just occasionally freezes for half a second, usually when there is gunfire in fps and such related games. Never had a problem like this on an old build, with the aforementioned 970, an Intel i5-4460, 8gb ddr3 and 600w psu with a stock cooler. (running ultra in almost all games with no issues what so ever.) So since the specs of this are more capable, i'm wondering why there is this stuttering occurring. Nvidia drivers are up to date, same with any other drivers i have relating to my current components. Even swapped out a Pentium G4560 to upgrade to the current i5-6500 but it changed very little. I have disabled windows game bar, as well as Nvidia in-game overlay. Prior to disabling the Nvidia in-game overlay, i was getting more frequent freezing, after disable freezes/ micro stuttering are less frequent but when they happen they instead of lasting like 0.5-1 second or less, they last like 4 seconds. Not sure if i will have to backdate Nvidia drivers like some people have done, but some people say that works while others don't. Also it isn't a thermal issue, CPU temperatures maxed out at 45C, GPU at 60C after playing Fortnite (or rather trying to) for 2 hours on high settings, with constant freezing (old build could handle epic at 60fps no issues) . Also this GPU is only set to turn its fans on when it hits 60C, so not a clue why its doing this since both CPU and GPU are never anywhere near 100% used, occasional spikes on the CPU side but usually CPU sits at about 60% utilization, GPU at like i think 30-40 from memory. Also, would it be because i didn't format or do a settings wipe on the os drive after just straight swapping it into the build? I think that's about all I have to add, but if anyone can help it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Edit: Have totally uninstalled nvidia drivers and experience, reinstalled an old driver without experience and the problem still persists.
