  1. Yeah, I figured it would be overkill - I think I saw a 1200w as a cm deal on amazon too. I do have a ton of fans on my system though (24, may add another 6 in the future for full push-pull config), plus the pumps, etc. As for the motherboard, the only feature I'm really interested in is 2 usb-c headers on the motherboard so I can connect them to the case. The front of the case has 2 usb-c and 4 usb-a ports. I already have a soundblaster soundcard so on-board audio isn't a big deal for me.
  2. 1. Budget & Location USA, $4000 2. Aim Mainly for gaming, some photoshop 3. Monitors Already have a Alienware AW3420DW 4. Peripherals No need to buy any 5. Why are you upgrading? I'm currently on a i7 7700k system. Corsair 1000D case. I'd like to upgrade to an AMD system with a motherboard that has 2 usb-c headers to accomodate for the case (most motherboards I've seen only have 1 header). I took a screenshot of a very rough draft of some components, but I am of course open to suggestions. As long as it's at least 32gb of ram. As for the video card, I am not sure if I want to go with nvidia (because burning connectors) or AMD.
  3. I thik it's great that GN will take the stance they have announced. Just because the owner of x company is your friend, it shouldn't mean that you're going to use kid gloves for their product reviews. To do so is a disservice to them, to the company product they're reviewing, and to their audience. Give praise when it's due, and call them out when needed. Whether the owner of the company will pay any heed to the criticisms it's up to them - if they want their reputation tarnished because of some childish BS, let them. It's up to their audience / customer base whether that shit will fly or not. All GN can do is report on the facts. You can still be friends as long as both sides understand where the line is drawn as far as business is concerned.
  4. I think the channel has always had an identity crisis from time to time. They did some journalism but it wasn't a whole lot of it. However for the most part it's been about "reviewing" all the PC bling. I can't remember the last time they had a video about a realistic computer setup that was actually educational (outside of prebuilt pc reviews). There's been a few times that Linus has called out big companies for doing something bad, but I can also count that on one hand. Outside of that, it's been about entertainment moreso than education or even journalism. There's better channels out there if you want to be educated or if you want investigative journalism. LTT isn't qualified for either, and I don't think they ever have. To be fair I don't think I could blame anyone for fanboying in Intel's fab. or AMD's. Or any fab for that matter. Those walkthroughs are pretty cool. As for the video you mentioned, yeah, you're right. That's why I don't take any of LTT's reviews seriously at all (well except for that one video on popOS. That's probably been the first linux distro I've really enjoyed). Even for things that interest me, I don't take their word for it. They're good for letting people know "hey, this exists", and that's about as much value as I place on them. Again, there's better places for actual information. Having said all this, clearly there's a space for entertainment and I think that the more people realize that's all they are, the less disappointed they will be about the value of their content. And that's totally ok too! It's not bad to be entertained.
  5. LTT videos are and have been all about the tech bling for a long, long time. I like to think of the channel as "Pimp My Ride" but for computers. Even the Intel $5k makeover videos have a MTV Cribs feel to it. Don't look to LTT for something you will actually learn from. It's purely entertainment and there's nothing wrong with that. I think that if you see it for what it is, it will end up leaving less of a bad taste in your mouth. If I want to learn something I look towards GN. I stopped watching Jayz stuff long ago so I don't know what he's up to other than lamenting some Audi R8 crap on twitter. I've never really enjoyed content from Kyle or other folks either. It's probably just me getting too old for this stuff though.
  6. True. I was looking at the active backplates from heatkiller and holy crap they look awesome, haha. I typically go with ek waterblocks, and I do need to buy new tubing and coolant anyway...
  7. Hi, thank you for replying! Yeah, the only reason I'd go with the hydro at all is because it already has a waterblock installed so I can just add it to my loop. I could go with a FTW3 or XC3 as you mentioned, but wouldn't the card + waterblock (unsure if an active backplate would be needed too) be more expensive in the end? Hi! Thanks for replying! I figured 1200w would be enough but the 1600 seemed to be pretty well regarded in reviews, plus in the psu tier list the 1600 seems to be best in class. The savings would be substantial though. Which 1200w psu would you recommend? Also, I failed to mention: I have about $400 in gift cards from work so I'd be using that towards the purchase or either the gpu or cpu. Normally I'd go for the cheaper option but since I was given that I figured why not lol Consensus seems to be to just go for purchasing the gpu so far. hmm.
  8. Budget (including currency): about $4000 Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: mostly gaming, some photoshopping Hi everyone I am planning to upgrade my current build, these are the components on their way out: - EVGA 1080ti ftw3 - i7 7700k - Gygabyte AORUS z270x Gaming 7 - EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2 - Swiftech H320 X2 Prestige (360mm rad) So the swiftech is going to go away and I'll replace it with a blackice gtr 360 so I can have one loop instead of 2. (currently have the swiftech+gtr360 on top for the cpu, 2x 480mm on front for the gpu). I want to make my next build AMD, so that + motherboard will be the last things I will switch out. This leaves the PSU and GPU. I was considering buying an EVGA 3080ti ftw3 hydro since they're going for about $1099 right now, but should I wait for the 4000 series since they're around the corner? I also hear that towards the end of the month the 3080s will be going down in price further. The biggest thing I worry about is the PSU. I thought about getting the EVGA 1600 1600 T2 but it looks like that Corsair AX1600i (or HX1500i if I want to stay in the same price range) are better. My system has a Corsair 1000D for a case and 24 fans (noctua NF-A12x25), so this thing is going to be drawing a lot of power and I don't think my PSU will be able to cut it anymore. I don't think it'll be able to handle the GPU upgrade alone, much less that + the new ryzen cpus. Anyway, sorry about the ramble. I hope this makes sense. Any help / advice would be appreciated, thank you.
  9. If you just want it to be in good hands you might wanna reach out to Steve Burke @gamersnexus to see if they still donate equipment. You could either send it to them and they will get it to the right person, or they could tell you where to send it to. I think they've donated stuff to animal rescue places. You can also contact your local animal rescues and donate it to them. You may even be able to make it a tax deductible thing out of it!
  10. I don't expect corporate type of behavior at all (nor would I want that) but I'd expect a little more professionalism? given the size of LTT and its following I'd be a little more aware of what I say and do in the videos. Even so I feel the word professional might be too strong here. or even mature. maybe just... less juvenile? I dunno man. haha
  11. I don't think there is any sexual harassment going on, but considering that it's a sponsored (to be fair, aren't they all) video I would expect, well... maybe not more professionalism, but I'd be more aware of the types of jokes being made. I get that it's in good fun and all but I found it more enjoyable when Linus would make fun of people for not cleaning their PCs / having equipment taken from work than the innuendos. For either men or women. Then again, I'm getting old. Edit: thinking on it more, it really all is pretty minor. I wish there was less of it, but again I think that's just because I'm getting old lol. Even having said all that, I really don't think there's any kind of sexual harassment going on, but I suppose that's more for the recepient of it to determine.
  12. I may try that! Just have to go find a new power adapter. When I talked to the asus rep at Blizzcon, I told him I was thinking about buying this router but was hesitant because of the price. I asked if it would eventually support WPA3 and he said yes, after a firmware update, which just never happened. Second, I asked about the warranty and he said it would be lifetime warranty so I wouldn't have to worry about it. This is where I messed up though, I should've looked more closely into it. 2 years warranty for a $500+ router is ludicrous imo. I rather put my money in a company that will warranty their products for a reasonable time. I'm not mad they won't extend the warranty -- that I completely understand. It's that the warranty is so short that made me mad. At first I thought of a router, but since I'm laying down wiring and will have a switch, I think I may just need a wireless AP. I'm open to either.
  13. Hi everyone, Super disappointed / mad at ASUS. Purchased a router in 2018 (GT-AC5300) and lately wifi just craps out on me. My wired connection also becomes non-responsive - the only way to get it to work again is by doing a factory reset. Latest firmware has been used. It happens at least once a month. Paid over $500 for what's now basically a paper weight after 3 years. Called tech support after this happening for like 5 months (I thought the issue was firmware related) and they say it's a 24 month warranty period and in their graciousness, added 90 days on top. Does me no good now. Needless to say, I'm never buying ASUS anything again, and for what I do buy, I'll def make sure to look at the warranty period. Which sucks, since I was looking at getting a asus motherboard for my next upgrade too. But alas. Yeah, I'm pretty salty AF :( What router should I get? Looks like Netgear and TP-Link offer some decent products. I am going to network my entire home soon (I just bought a switch, battery backup, patch panel and cable - going with cat6a), so I basically just need a wireless AP at this juncture. Something with wifi6 and wpa3 - I don't mind going for a high end one as long as it offers good performance.
  14. Bit of an update: I've purchased most of what I need, but I am now left with the switch. I was thinking of going with an unmanaged switch since it's plug and play, but a friend convinced me that going with a managed switch may be the way to go as I could get better security and troubleshooting would be easier in the long run. What's a switch you'd recommend? This seems to have good reviews, though it's definitely on the pricey side for me. Edit: Thank you Falcon1986 for recommending Infinite Cable! I ended up contacting their sales team and they helped me make my purchase - and saved me some money by recommending alternate things to buy. Edit 2: poe is not important for the switch - the only reason I considered one was for the security cameras and since I'm going to buy a whole system I won't need to buy anything else.
