  1. who said they are crap? the one I have already is an aero cool that has worked without any problems for a year (stopped using because added more GPUs to system) and the second one I was thinking of buying is a corsair.
  2. planning on doing something a tad jank, so wanted to get some opinions from those with more knowledge than me. I have a vega 64 I want to use in a secondary system but I only have a 500w psu with a single 8 pin. they recommend a 750w psu for the vega64, but those psus are pretty pricey. so instead, I was thinking of buying a second hand phanteks power combo device and a second 500w psu. this would cost me about 35%less in total, and give me more upgrade options in future. this would provide more than enough power in total, but it would mean Im powering the psu with one 8pin from each psu. would this cause me any issues? I would really appreciate any advice on this before I blow up one of my most expensive parts.
  3. ah shit. that's a pain in the ass. I thought the ssds would finish quickly so I could work fast and the hdds would keep working in the background to catch up. thanks for the warning.
  4. awesome. thank you very much for the help ?
  5. I'm planning to make a rendering rig with a fairly large budget. would I be able to stripe 2 ssds (the raid 0 part) for the speed, then have those 2 ssds mirrored by 2 hdds (the raid 1 part). my thinking is raid 1 is all about redundancy, so I shouldn't need the drives to be fast? I have never used ssds. I have never used raid. so wanted to check to make sure I haven't got this wrong before I blow a few hundred quid on storage.
  6. thanks for the extra info. I wont bore you with details but after looking into it more, im 99.9% sure the malware is delt with. even if it is still there, im not worried because I have an image back up of all my data. I appreciate the info you gave and will keep it in mind in future if I have any more problems. thank you.
  7. I somehow got malware on my pc. not sure how as I don't remember downloading anything suspicious. anyway, windows defender picked it up in a quick scan and says its been quarantined. im now doing a full scan to make sure I havnt missed anything else. my question is, do I have to do anything else? the things been quarantined, do I need to delete it, or will windows handle that for me? windows defender dosnt make it very clear, so id appreciate some clarification.
  8. hmmm true....or...i could use both and get 10 cards? :'D
  9. im not planning on using a pcie slitter, it would limit bandwidth too much (1x). im planning on having 5 gpus in the pcie slots (16,8,16,8,4), but most (tr4) boards have 3 nvme slots. i can use an adapter on each of these to plug one more gpu in per nvme slot at pcie4x each.
  10. ive noticed some mobos have a 6pin on them for extra PCIE power. i plan to have between 5 and 8 Navi GPUs attached to a TR4 mobo for 3D rendering work. obviously this is going to draw a lot of power. i will probably be combining two 1600w PSUs to get enough power for the GPUs. can someone please explain the relevance of the extra 6 pin for PCIE power? will it cause me any problems if i dont have one on the motherboard i buy? im thinking of things like instability, killing components, shortened life span, lower performance etc. you get the point. would greatly appreciate any help.
  11. yes, am planning on it but will be a few hours until I can get my hands on it. fingers crossed
  12. yep, mixed dims. both are recognised in the bios. both kits are rated at 2400, but im using 2133 to be safe. Im confused because normally id expect it to either work, or not, rather than this weird in-between.
  13. I have 48gb of ram (2x8 + 2x16). task manager recognises I have 48gb. but half of that is "hardware reserved" and I cant use it. can someone please explain what causes this and how I fix it, because for what im doing I need all 48 gb ?
  14. 8,16,8,16. the funny thing is, the system has actually been more stable in this setup than just the 16gb kit. and if its not my GPUs reserving it, then why are those numbers being listed in task manager?
  15. im having some issues with reserved ram and was hoping someone could explain this for me. I have 48gb ram installed (2x16gb + 2x8gb)and three GPUs (vega64+1070ti+750ti). task manager says 24gb is usable, and the other 24 is reserved. after looking around I can see in task manager that my GPUs are reserving a ton of ram for themselves in the "GPU memory" section. vega= 24gb, 1070ti= 20gb and 750ti= 14gb. they also all have 12gb "shared GPU memory". im rather confused by this. would be very grateful is someone could explain why this is happening and what the GPUs need that ram for?
  16. thanks for the info. looks like ill have to do some maths ?
  17. trying to make render nodes for 3d GPU rendering with good price to performance. im struggling to find motherboards that have 4/5 pcie 16x slots for a good price. a lot of the ones i find have dozens on features i dont need. basically the only thing i need is: as many 16x or 8x pcie slots as possible, with as many pcie lanes as possible. a board with 3 pcie16x slots is <£50, whereas boards with 4+ pcie slots are >£100. TLDR; can someone please recommend the cheapest board that has 4+ pcie 16x slots?
  18. that's great, thanks for the info. ?
  19. yeah, its rendering so 4 lanes should make little to no difference with the cards im using. so its just a case of how many cards I can cram into one system for as little cost as possible. this board is fairly high quality, its meant to be a "premium" board, so I have high hopes for the m.2s working well.
  20. hi, thanks for the suggestion. as I said the mobo is a x370 gaming pro carbon. the cpu is a 1600X. the idea you suggested sounds great, but if I can do that to the main pcie slots...could I do the m.2 slots as well to get even more GPUs?
  21. so I saw an LTT video about using an m.2 in an old laptop to gain performance but that isn't my intended use case. (video ) I have a desktop that I use as a workstation/gaming rig. for my work I need as many GPUs as I can get, but ive already populated all the 16x slots. but in this video he says you can get 4 lanes from each m.2. I have 2 m.2 slots...theoretically would I be able to run 2 extra cards from here? another thing that im wondering about, as you plug in more GPUs it reduces the lanes available. on my board its: 1GPU=one x 16lanes. 2GPU=two x 8lanes. 3GPU= two x 8lanes + one x 4lanes. so seeming as this riser is meant to use 4lanes (each) would that mean I have less lanes overall, and if so how can I tell which ones will be reduced? (mobo is x370 gaming pro carbon)
