  1. I got it working by changing it again to AHCI in the BIOS, then forcing Windows to boot into Safemode, where it forced Windows to install the AMD SATA driver automatically. Rebooted back in to standard Windows, and AHCI is still enabled and working! And best of all, no more random freezing up and shutting down issues on this PC. It's running smooth again
  2. I noticed one of my PCs is running in IDE mode rather than AHCI. So, I went into the registry to change the Start key value for storahci from 3 to 0, but noticed it was already set to 0. Isn't 0 still the value for using AHCI? Yet when I change IDE to AHCI in the BIOS and boot, Windows fails with a BSD error: Inaccessible Boot Device. It still boots fine in IDE mode, yet how is it running in IDE mode when the storahci start value is set to 0? Any suggestions to get AHCI working? 3. Someone opened a document on my wife's PC, so I was going to try to figure out when it was last accessed, but I noticed this behavior of setting the current time/date with Windows when I tested it on my PC. Fortunately, I haven't tried it directly on her file yet, so maybe there is still a chance. She doesn't have her PC set to logoff after inactivity so it's always available to anyone. So it makes it harder to pinpoint when it happened, especially if I can't even check the last accessed property of the file.
  4. I noticed that if I right click on any file on my W10 PC and click Properties, the Accessed time/date changes to whatever the current date/time is. Why is this? What good is trying to check when a file was last accessed if every time you check it, it's just going to change to whatever the current date/time is? I'm going to check on another PC when I get a chance to see if it's maybe just something with my PC, unless someone can confirm this is how W10 is now, or maybe has always been.
  5. I'm trying to create a USB bootable W10 v1703 using only the Recovery portion of the iso file. I don't need it to install Windows, only need it for troubleshooting Windows. I can't remember if the Recovery image is in the install.wim or boot.wim or maybe somewhere else. Anyhow, is this possible, and will it decrease the size of the iso? I know removing other OS versions from install.wim does not significantly decrease the size because they all share common files within the install.wim. But since I only need the Recovery image and not any of the other OSs, I'm hoping this will allow a much smaller iso.
  6. That did it! Not sure how I missed that "obvious" option. I agree, it does seem pretty pointless. May just disable it for good this time.
  7. Using Window 10 22H2, I just noticed when opening my start menu, it now has over 100 or so apps listed under Recently Added Apps. It appears to be showing everything installed as new or recently added for some reason. Removing them one by one will take forever! Is there a registry setting or something that will allow me to remove all of them or clear this list? Disabling the option Show Recently Added Apps under Settings > Personalization > Start, does not clear this list, it ONLY disables/hides it, so re-enabling it brings all of them back. I just want to clear this list quickly without manually right clicking on each app, selecting "Remove from this list". Also, curious how this happened in the first place as most of these apps have been installed for years.
  8. Does anyone know how to disable the HP Cartridge Protection on a HP LaserJet 5200? I keep getting a message "Non-Genuine Cartridge Installed". I'm very aware it's not genuine, but I've read over the internet, even from HP reps, that state you can use non-genuine cartridges, but you must first disable the HP Cartridge Protection option to allow this. I've posted over at the HP forums about 2 weeks ago, and I haven't received one reply. I have searched through the menu many times over, and have not seen this HP Cartridge Protection option or anything similar. Is this HP Cartridge Protection only available on certain models, or newer printers only? I have both an HP LaserJet 5200 and 5200tn, and neither seem to have this option or I'm just looking in the wrong places for it. If this cartridge protection option is not available for this model, does anyone know of another way to get it to work? The label on the box says it's HT-Q7516A-N25, and is suitable for use with HP LaserJet 5200/5200n/5200tn/5200dtn. It was purchased from InkTonerStore.com. Thanks Mike
  9. Perfect! I agree, though I had an extra 2.5 SAS drive with the right capacity to backup the entire system
  10. I have a Dell PowerEdge T320 (7KNLW12) with a PERC H710 Adapter. It has 8 slots on the front for inserting HDDs. The first 3 are occupied for our RAID 5. I wanted to backup the entire system, so I inserted another drive into one of the free slots, but Windows would not recognize the drive, only the RAID adapter could see it. So, apparently you can't just simply insert a drive into one of the free slots on the front backplane and expect to use it in Windows as a regular drive, like for backups. So, with knowing this, can I create a separate RAID or VD for only this drive, so I can then use it to make a full, complete system backup of the current RAID? I started to try this, but then I got the message "It is recommended that all newly created logical drives be initialized...etc..." I couldn't find any place to initialize it, so I canceled to be safe.
  11. I'm looking to extend my WIFI about 200ft from my cabin to my friend's cabin who is just across a small pond with a clear line of sight. My internet is not great as I could only get Hughesnet, which gives me only 25mb/3mb. We don't really care about streaming movies or TV, etc., but we do like the ability to use WIFI Calling since we have no phone service here. Any recommendations for an outdoor directional AP that would be a good and reasonable fit for such a setup? Considering the receiving devices from my friend's cabin such as his phone will have weak transmitting power to send back, would we need to mount two directional APs? (I assume this would be a point to point connection) I really don't want to put a lot of money into it since the speeds provided by Hughesnet are so slow, especially the upload. I wish StarLink was available here.
  12. Running Windows Server 2012 R2, I would like to create a System backup, though exclude certain files/folders that are already backed up to other media. The server is running a RAID 5 with 3 disks, so I will be backing up a virtual disk if that makes any difference. I'm thinking the Windows Server Backup is not able to do this, so was looking for any suggestions/recommendations. I will be adding a 4th disk to the RAID 5 tomorrow, and so want to make sure I have a reliable backup of the System in case of failure. My database and other essential files (~280GBs) are backed up daily to a 300GB removable media drive, but I have no actual backup of the System drive. I only have one spare 300GB media drive, so backing up the entire system which includes the database would greatly exceed the capacity of this backup media. Fortunately, the database and its files are already backed up to the other 300GB media drive, so I just need to backup the remaining System drive, excluding the database.
  13. I'm trying to learn more about subnetting and came across the following which confused me. So, a Class A which is 255.0.0.0 or /8 can have 16,777,214 hosts and 0 subnets, at least that's what a chart I have shows. Yet, I've always known that Class A can have 127 networks. Am I confusing the terms subnet and network, as I always thought they meant the same as in dividing up the IP addresses into different networks/subnets? If they are actually different, then I'm really confused.
  14. Where does the command net users acquire its list of usernames? I'm curious now, because it is showing the username Drew that I can't find anywhere in Windows. 1. Not listed under the ProfileList in the registry 2. Not shown in the Windows Users Accounts 3. Not found in the Users directory of the drive I ran net user drew, and I now see where it came from due to this comment left by the software that created it. Comment "For EaseUS Todo Backup Central Management Console" I know I can easily remove this username using the net command, but I'm more curious how net users is finding this username when it's not even listed under the ProfileList in the registry. Update: After doing a search through the registry, I found the username was listed under Winlogon>SpecialAccounts. Though it was just the name, so still not sure how the net user command still showed the user's details when I typed net user drew. I deleted the entry and rebooted, and now the username is showing under the Windows User Account, though it is still not present under the ProfileList in the registry. I'm assuming this is b/c I have never logged into this account, and the key will not be created until I do.
  15. I have an ASRock 970 Extreme4, and the manual claims the Hot Swap/Hot Plug is enabled by default as long as I have SATA mode set to AHCI in the BIOS, which I do and always have, and a SATA3 drive, which I also have. After searching the net, it seems this is a common problem with this motherboard. Someone suggested using a program called Hot Swap that helped them.
  16. I have a quick-release hard drive bay in my W10 PC so I can easily swap hard drives. When swapping them out, Windows will never seem to recognize the new replacement hdd. I have to open Computer Management and rescan the drives, then it will show the correct hdd in File Explorer. If I don't rescan the drives, File Explorer will still show the previous drive as still connected and using the same drive letter. Apparently, Windows keeps a cache of the old drive partition or directory, because if you accidentally open the drive (which I did, accidentally of course), it still shows the files and folders from the previous drive. So, I thought I would try to open a file just to see what it would do. As expected, since the files are actually on the previous disconnected drive, it popped up an error that the file is missing or corrupted. Though surprisingly, it opened text files without issue. So, after realizing the issue, I rescanned the drives under Computer Management. To my horror, it showed my 2 TB hdd as RAW! (F:) 1863.01 GB RAW Healthy (Primary Partition) This drive was working perfectly 20 minutes earlier before I temporarily swapped it out with a 500 GB drive to transfer some files. The 500 GB drive only had a few files totaling ~200MB, so not even half a GB, so if it wrote over anything, it shouldn't have been much. Knowing this drive is in great shape, and this sudden change from NTFS to RAW, which likely resulted by me trying to access the drive while Windows still thought the previous drive was connected, what are my chances of fixing this? Has anyone experienced this issue before with hot swapping a drive, and accidentally accessing the drive before Windows rescans and actually shows the correct drive in File Explorer? I have around 1.2 TB of data on this drive I would rather not lose. I created an image of the 2 TB drive, and it finished this morning (14 hours later). R-Studio shows the one partition as Partition1 Data NTFS 1MB 1.82 TB. Though, when I open Partition1, it shows the directory from the previous 500 GB drive (which remember, only had a few small files totaling ~200 MB). Obviously, Windows somehow wrote the 500 GB directory structure to the 2 TB drive. If it updated the partition, shouldn't it have also changed the 2 TB size to the same size as the 500 GB drive?
  17. My wife and I go camping occasionally in our travel trailer, and one of the most frustrating parts, for me anyways, is the camping facility's WiFi. I get lucky sometimes just to be able to search the internet or even check my email. Many times the owner or manager of the facility will claim it's because someone is using their own access point or router, and it's sucking up all the bandwidth. Is this even possible? I mean wouldn't the person using their own router/AP have the same limited bandwidth that I or anyone else would have on the campsite's WiFi? I mean, if I connected my own router/AP to the campsite's already slow WiFi, I don't see it helping my situation. If anything, it looks like it would make it worse since it has to go through more hops, and worse, don't you lose half the bandwidth when you bridge a wireless connection? Another one I always hear is it's because everyone is streaming Netflix or something similar. Unless it's first come first serve, I don't see how anyone else can be streaming if I can't stream. I thought it may be first come first serve, yet I have tried many times testing throughout the day and even in the middle of the night at many different campsites, and it's always a hit or miss if I can even stream for a few minutes. Can anyone explain how likely most campsites distribute their WiFi? Is it first come first serve or more less evenly distributed as more users connect splitting the bandwidth among them all? And can someone using their own router/AP use up all or most of the available bandwidth?
  18. I have a AMD Radeon R7 350 2GB 128 BIT GPU. The maximum DP resolution is 4096 x 2160, maximum HDMI resolution is 4096 x 3112, and maximum DVI is 2560 x 1600. How can I verify before purchasing my two 4K monitors, whether this GPU will be able to output at minimum 2056 x 1440 on both monitors at the same time? Of course I prefer higher if possible, but this would be the minimum. This will be for Autodesk Inventor. I ask because I've been down this road before, and while I could get 2056 x 1440 on one of the monitors, I could never get it on both at the same time. It would always peak at 1080 on the opposite monitor.
  19. Resolved! It was not Windows Backup but actually EaseUS. She forgot to tell me she had downloaded EaseUS backup
  20. My mom purchased a 2 TB external drive and connected it, and started to use W10's Windows 7 Backup. When I found out what she was doing, I told her she didn't need a 2 TB drive for her little bit of data, so she returned the drive, and I set her up to backup or sync her data to the cloud. The next morning she told me she received this error in the bottom right corner of her laptop: "The backup path does not exist. Please check the backup path and retry. The program will retry automatically in xx seconds. Retry or Cancel" I realized she left the schedule on for Windows Backup, so I turned it off. Yet, again the next morning, she still received the same error. I double checked that the schedule was off, which it was, so that was odd. I then went into services and completely disabled the Windows Backup. Rebooted the laptop and confirmed it was still disabled. Yet again, this morning, the same error is back! How is this possible?! Mike
  21. Running Windows 10, I have three partitions: Partition 1 - System - 500MB ---> Volume 2 (ESP) FAT32 ---> Active partition, contains the EFI\Microsoft\Boot\ Partition 2 - Reserved - 128MB ---> "There is no volume associated with this partition" Partition 3 - Primary - 237GB ---> Volume 1 (OS) NTFS ---> Windows 10 Not sure what happen to my Reserved partition on Partition 2. I can't seem to do anything with Partition 2, since it has no volume associated with it. I'm moreless curious why my Reserved partition is not setup correctly. I'm assuming Partition 2 was the original System Partition based on its small 128MB size, and Partition 1 being at 500MB, was the original Reserved partition. Any suggestions on how I can rebuild/restore this Reserved partition in its current state? Or can I remove it safely or any other suggestion? I have confirmed that Partition 1 and 2 are using the correct type if that helps: Partition 1 Type = c12a7328-f81f-11d2-ba4b-00a0c93ec93b (default GPT ID for EFI System Partition) Partition 2 Type = e3c9e316-0b5c-4db8-817d-f92df00215ae (default for MSR) Thank you Mike
  22. I've been using a HP LaserJet 5200 with PostScript (PS) on two of my Windows 10 PCs for a while now. I've never had any luck with any of HP's Universal PS drivers, so I have always depended on the compatible drivers provided by Microsoft. Thankfully, they have always worked...until today! The issue is only with one of my W10 PCs. The status of the printer says "Needs New Driver". Also right clicking the printer now shows a "Update" button. I clicked the update button, and it appeared to act like it was updating, but the same message still persists. Anytime I try to open the properties of the printer, it keeps saying the driver is not installed, would I like to install the driver? Selecting Yes, and selecting the HP LaserJet 5200 PS from the Windows compatible drivers list, it appears to install the driver, but yet, once again I still have the same errors, Needs New Driver and drivers are not installed for this printer. It's like this cycle just keeps repeating itself. So I finally uninstalled the printer and removed the printer drivers and its package using printui /s. I rebooted the PC and preceded to reinstall the printer again, but this time under the Windows compatible drivers list, the HP LaserJet 5200 PS was not listed. Is this b/c I removed the driver and package earlier? I clicked the Windows Update button and waited for it to update the list. Again, the printer was still not listed. So I'm confused, why is it missing from the list when it was there 30 minutes ago before I removed the printer, and if I did remove it, why didn't it reappear after clicking Windows Update? I'm sure they keep a database of these compatible drivers they provide. How can I verify if Microsoft is still providing this compatible driver? If they are not, is there anyway I can copy/extract the same drivers from my other Windows 10 PC or do you have any other suggestions?
  23. No, because I have the system set to never sleep. But good call as sleep is known to cause strange issues at times. Actually, I think it's more the waking up that causes most issues.
  24. It's strange though that EaseUS is causing it to happen now, because I have it set to backup weekly, and looking at my logs, all of the backups have been successful. The only two that showed failed are the ones I tried to manually run today, which resulted in the same BSOD. I have all the latest drivers from Dell and Windows, but I will look for drivers directly from the manufacturers' websites. I'll install another backup program so I can backup my system, because I'm really wanting to run the driver verifier. I'm hoping it it may shed some light on what driver may be the culprit.
