@xAcid9 DDU'ing both the AMD and the INTEL drivers didn't improve the situation. I have a bootable copy/drive of the old 1903 install. I guess I can do a registry dump comparison old vs new unless there are better next steps/suggestions.

and using msi afterburner itself.. well in 1903 afterburner was flaky - which is why i chose to use overdrive instead of afterburner. now in 1909, afterburner cant increase limits.

running a HD 7690m (laptop), after updating from windows 10 1903 to 1909, radeon 'overdrive' is missing from the radeon settings panel. I have tried DDU from safemode, and reinstalled the exact driver and CCC i had running in 1903. I tried deleting the registry key of HKCU\Software\ATI\ACE\Settings so the settings could rebuild. Also made sure the user account has permission to HKCU\Software\ATI\ACE\Settings and its children. tried using MSI afterburner to enable "extend official overclocking limits". seems that 1909 has effectively neutered overdrive on this older card.

I need a vga to hdmi adapter that will actually output the bios and boot screens to an hdmi monitor.

this will be used for server maintenance and pc bios/boot troubleshooting - when the only monitor available is hdmi.

servers only have vga out, and typically run headless.

PCs: some have only vga out, or the bios/boot is only sent to the vga port (and bios doesnt provide for bios and boot to be shown on hdmi/dvi/DP port.

I have bought so many adapters that do not work for this specific use case.

using windows mail app in windows 10. adobe reader DC is the default pdf software. opening a pdf attachment in windows mail opens the file in reader UNDER the windows mail app window. How do I force/enforce reader DC opening on TOP of the message that contained the .pdf? i do not see an "always on top" option in either reader DC or in windows mail.

You can join in only for the Photos app, if you want, by simply opening the Photos app, then go to "..." menu, then pick "Settings", then scroll down to "Preview", and click on the button "Join Preview" (or something like that). You should then, soon (maybe 24h or so), join the Photos app preview, and you should be getting my version of the app. You can leave anytime, by repeating the process, and pick "Leave preview" button that will appear.

I have enabled the preview version of Photos App and will update here once it has kicked in. FWIW, i had to fullscreen the current version of Photos for the 'settings' option to be available in the '...' menu. now that preview is enabled, 'settings' is available at any size via scroll of the '...' menu. I ran microsoft store update and windows update and nothing new was available, so apparently preview versions deliver across some other subsystem. So I'll wait as you said. Regardless of whether it works, thanks for this incredible info i didnt realize existed.

Not every monitor manufacture make valid ones. Change it to the default sRGB instead of the monitor, and restart the Photos app.

 

(Start > Type: Color Management > pick "Color Management". A panel will show, check the box: "Use my settings for this device", select whatever profile you see, if any, and hit the "Remove" button, then click on "Add..." button, and select "sRGB virtual device model profile" under "WCS" section, click on OK.

You have multiple displays,you'll need to do this for all of them (pick the monitor from the drop down box above the check box "Use my settings..." that you just checked).

Again, make sure the Photos app is closed, and open your image again.

happens even on machines that dont have any special color profile installed, and tried your instructions to remove the custom profiles on machines where they existed to no improvement. excellent suggestion though.

When viewing an image with transparencies, the Microsoft Photos App, the default viewer in Windows 10, images look washed out or otherwise display incorrectly. During active resize of the Photos App window, the image shows correctly, but as soon as the resizing stops, the image is back to its washed out look. This is a major problem for designers proofing to unaware recipients whom just think that the image looks poor. This is not Switchable Graphics issue, as was able to reproduce on machines with Switchable Graphics, with Discrete Graphics, and with Integrated Graphics.

The images display correctly in other softwares and on webpages. The problem is that the Photos App is the default image viewer in Windows 10. It's not a good fit to tell every design recipient "hey make sure you aren't opening this in the Photos App" and then that becomes a whole discussion placing doubt in the mind of the client.

I have tried the reset Photos App, and even remove/reinstall the Photos App. Affects all up to date Windows 10 machines that I have access to. I can change the default viewer to another software for my own use, but that doesn't improve the recipient's situation. For own use there's also the ability to re-enable the legacy photo viewer - but that's a bad move due to the legacy viewer's inability to properly reproduce gamma and colorspace, that's why it was deprecated and again doesn't help the recipient's situation.

an answer sent to me a bleepingcomputer fixed it. manually downloading the cumulative update KB4522355 which deprecated KB4517389, got windows update to the point of "up to date", ergo usocoreworker no longer persisting, which was preventing sleep.

recently found that my computer hasnt gone to sleep on its own in days. noticed fans were not at idle either. opening task manager performance, found that cpu is at constant use, ranging in about 20-30%. opened a command prompt [Win+R, cmd] to run 'powercfg -requests' and found that usocoreworker.exe was preventing sleep. usocoreworker seems to be part of the latest windows update subsystem. opened windows update to find that KB4517389 was stuck at 98% downloading. in command prompt, i ran 'net stop wuauserve' and 'net stop bits', then i emptied the contents of the %windows%/softwaredistribution/downloads folder. in command prompt ran 'net start wuauserve' (which had already restarted on its own) and 'net start bits'. went into windows update, KB4517389 was found and completed, "restart to update" indicator appeared on the power off in start menu. rebooted. "cleaning up" came on the screen prior to OS. in OS, in command prompt, ran 'powercfg -requests' and usocoreworker was still there. reopened windows update and KB4517389 was in a loop of: getting ready, downloading, installing, completed, getting ready.. so i paused windows updates for 7 days. now usocoreworker was gone from 'powercfg -requests' and cpu usage dropped. now the computer goes to sleep as it should. Hopefully enough folks will have the same issue that Microsoft will push a fix for KB4517389. Any other suggestions to get past this update loop?

My kid got me a wireless headset for my birthday. They're great. They only connect to one source at a time. The better bluetooth adapter is in my main machine, so I hook the headset to it. While the main machine is busy chewing on projects, I have a 2nd machine that i use for netflix. I currently use a 3.5mm audio patch cable from the 2nd machine headphone jack to the mic-in on the 1st machine. System volume is at 50% on the 2nd machine, and on the 1st machine the mic level is at 1, with boost set to 20, with 'listen to mic' enabled. That gets 95% of the crackle out of the line between the machines, and normalizes that feed. I'm not striving for zero latency or audiophile grade capture. I just would like to have 1 less cable across the desk. Can a bluetooth link be established for audio between 2 computers? If so, how? 

Once I achieve that, then I'll drill down into multiple BT connections at once on my 1st machine. The bluetooth platform promised a PAN (Personal Area Network) which I have yet to experience in practice. Thanks in advance for any direction.

i am looking for real world recommendations on a 6+ port usb 3 hub. prefer externally powered. the ones ive tried either work great for about 2 months then fail or have major issues from the beginning, such as ports not working above usb 2 speeds (even when only a single drive is in use). i have an inline usb power meter ive used to verify i am not overloading the hubs ive tried. so many RMAs..

my kid wants to play games on steam with me, but finding a kid friendly (pre-teen) games has become a larger challenge than i anticipated. I know that disabling all in-game voices is a must, and would have to NOT have in-game chat, or the ability to turn that off. we've worn out the wii games, which we didnt have to worry about the titles we had purchased. i recently installed filezilla 3.45 and thought the queuing seemed slow. so i did a queue all of my server and timed it, repeated this several times. it consistently took about 30 minutes to queue it all. i uninstalled 3.45 and installed 3.6 (oldversion.com) and ran same test. 3.6 consistently queued it all in about 20 minutes. a 10 minute slowdown to perform a single site download is awful. can some settings be changed to get the 3.6 queuing speed out of 3.45?

It's not a knock your socks off rig, but a max out of what we started with, an education project, and my kid hasn't taken an interest in gaming on steam yet.

Looks bone-stock from the front/top/sides (other than the usb3.0 blue ports, and the little area of black paint i did to cover where i accidentally scarred the gloss front while cutting-in the card reader.
 

The fans rarely ramp up to audible levels, the machine's day job is ingest station, local network share, ftp server for printer's scanners, and netflix. Proof you don't have to break the bank for HTPC, data handling, and casual gaming (non-ultra settings).

Plays MarioKart Wii via Dolphin (I own the Wii and the disc) with WiiMote, and Minecraft each very well.

Let me know what you think. Suggestions for a next tweak?

I have had the best experience thus far with VirtualBox out of the many VM solutions I have tried on Windows (despite its XP-esque GUI styling). But please, change my mind - what is your go to VM solution, and why? Which one gives you the easiest snapshot, restore, and network isolation.

I have an HP envy that included a Kleer (KleerNet) audio transmitter. I have not been able to find any headsets (headphones + mic) that say they will connect to this laptop. I.e.: sennheiser makes Kleer headsets, but they are configured to use only the sennheiser transmitter which is externally powered with an audio line-in. I would like to buy a headset that connects to the Kleer transmitter in this laptop. I have tried bluetooth headsets, but there is too much delay in the audio for gaming. Alternatively, if i could find a bluetooth 4.0 module to fit in place of the bluetooth 3.0 module that is inside the laptop, perhaps that would remove the delay? I have considered replacing the bluetooth module anyhow due to the ability to use my m720 mouse without the usb unifying receiver - but I have not seen any performance lag comparisions of bluetooth vs. usb unifying receivers.

The always vibrate route may help some folks. I've tried it, but even with custom vibrations per notification type - for me it was difficult telling things apart and i couldnt hear it from any distance beyond being on my person - if I even noticed it then. But that's a ME issue.
The smart watch solution is a good idea. I've watched several LTT reviews of bad android watches, but dont recall any as being recommended. Is there a particular brand or model you would suggest looking at first?
I do plan that in time we will gather a voice large enough to get the android dev team's attention to re-add the feature, but until then, I may have to learn to wear a watch again  Thanks for the feedback.

Understood, however not all devices can be rooted, some folks lack the capacity to root their device even if it is possible. The stance of "it's not important to me therefore it must be irrelevant" is exactly the challenge that users affected by this feature omit are up against. There are many forum posts at many different vendors' sites about this very issue, but with no support channel in place to actually reach the android development team, there is no way to quantify how many folks are actually affected. i.e.: people posting about this at samsung dont gain any traction: it's an android issue, not a samsung issue, samsung is not the place to post about it, and samsung isnt going to gather that feedback and give it to the android dev team. rinse and repeat for every vendor of android powered devices on the market.

We're not asking for an either/or setting, youre correct some folks will want the sound in headphone only. we are not asking for feature add, but for a feature reinstatement that existed in past android versions.

Here are some use-case examples in response to your question:

When working, i do not constantly have my earbuds in, so that i can hear my child, but i leave the earbuds plugged in so that i can quickly take a call in-ear while being able to continue to work a keyboard. This in effect silences my device, and i miss timely messages.

I am loosing business because my alerts will not sound when a text/email come through. I am a HVAC service technician and am always in noisy environments. This is a big problem and needs to be solved quickly. I have used android since android 2.0 and this is by far the biggest problem to date. I also work for a local housing authority and receive my emergency on call via text. Some of our tenants have serious medical issues and this problem "COULD" possibly cost someone there life if I don't get notified in a timely manner.

I cannot hear notifications from my phone when my Bluetooth headphones are connected. My headphones are the LG Tones and rest around my neck when not in use but remain connected so that I can answer a call or listen to audio at a moment's notice.
