It literally doesn't matter. I am really not sure why you seems to take so much that someone, somewhere, may have your name? Do you have any social media accounts where you use your real name ? If not you, then someone in your family that does and they've posted pictures of you with your name attached to them?

Because that is worse than some dev having just your name.

What does an indie dev have to care that you're called John Doe ? It's not like they can sue you with just your name. (Nor would they because it'd cost too much to sue every single pirates, the mains targets are the ones who distribute/sell pirated content)

If you're that scared of your info being given to the ones you've pirated the software of... Maybe don't pirate ?

Or just use a firewall to block access to the internet of said software. No internet access = No information shared.

    Alright thank you

They won't and even if they do, they are more likely to get your name from your ISP with your IP.

Thank you, what about programs owned by an independent person, not a whole company, will they be able to see my name etc

  3. 14 hours ago, TetraSky said:

Why do you want to change the name of that folder? That's your User profile's folder.

It also shouldn't be in your D drive. That folder should only exist on your C drive. If it exist on the D drive as well, it means you also have Windows installed on that drive and you shouldn't touch those folders because it will screw with that windows install.

If you want to have a personalized username, create a local account and only use that instead of your Microsoft account. You'll need to either manually transfer your stuff over by exporting it in Chrome and what not, or give up on them.

I download a lot of programs and I'm scared that if I download a specific application, the owner will be able to see my name as the file path is usually like C>My name>program

  4. 4 hours ago, TetraSky said:

C drive and D drive can just be renamed with Right click > Rename.

In their case, the "path" doesn't change, it stays C:\ or D:\ , only the visual name changes in My PC.

I mean the name when you go into C or D drive > users > Folder With Your Name

    It has no rename option

  5. 10 hours ago, TetraSky said:

Then it is possible, that Windows, in its effort to "fix" your mistake, decided to basically reset your profile. Even more so if you were using a Microsoft Account instead of a Local Account.

It is also possible that your files still exist within your profile folder, if you can manually find them and copy them over.

When you go in C:\Users, what do you see in there?

Personally I see two things, "Public" and my own profile folder.

You should see three things. Public, your original folder and the new profile folder.

Explore the original folder to see if your chrome stuff is there at the very least. (Isn't that stuff stored online, on your Google account? Or were you using Chrome unregistered?)

Hey, nevermind. The first time I tried changing the name back, it didn't save for some reason so I tried again and it set it back to normal :). Thanks a lot for your help. I won't mess around with these types of things again. BUT, is there any way I can actually change the name of my C & D drive in Users without resetting everything?

  6. 8 minutes ago, TetraSky said:

You've literally changed your Windows profile folder to a newly created profile. What did you expect?

Step 1- Go back in the registry

Step 2- Change your profile folder back to what it used to be.

Step 3- Never mess with the registry again.

And don't store important info in a windows "note app". Keep that info in something like Keepass if it's worth any money.

I changed the name back, but it didn’t seem to do anything. Everything is still the same.

I wanted to change my username, and I followed this video's instructions, and after I restarted my pc it had this message:

    img_59ae6e09866a3.jpg.fbd93d0b3fc6a655ed9f908c266493f1.jpg

This message went away after 2 more times of signing out & signing back in. I still have all my files, and programs downloaded. But my whole computer orientation is gone. My desktop background, all my chrome history, chrome passwords, game accounts, and all the information I stored in my notes app (which had hundreds of dollars worth of info)

I still have the "files" but everything is reset. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP! I want my pc to go back to how it originally was

    Not this:

Everything is reset, but I still have my files. I want it to go back to how it was before. All I did was follow that video and go into registery to change my name, and it messed my whole computer up.

One of the easiest places to start is a DDU (follow their recommended instructions) of your drivers and a reinstall, see if that gets you anywhere.

When it comes to Cortana lagging behind, honestly it doesn't surprise me all that much. She has never been the most responsive assistant, and Multiple times now, I've had to do reinstallations of Windows because Cortana and her integration into the start menu begin to not work for some inexplicable reason.

So if I use that program to uninstall my drivers, would it automatically reinstall them?

  9. So recently my pc has started to act up by randomly freezing in games, having a delay when I try to search something up with cortana etc. And I'm just trying to find the root to this situation so I can fix it.

I was possibly thinking that it could be because my disk space is running out? I also thought the issue was because I hadn't dusted my pc in a while, but even after I dusted my pc, the problem continued. I have malwarebytes + bitdefender and I have no trojans, malwares or viruses.

    Here is my disk space:

Could it also be my fan?

    I have 8x2GB ddr4 2400mhz ram, GTX 1060 6GB, i7-8700 + a 750W Thermaltake PSU

Outlast II is a good game, it puts us in a gloomy and unhealthy atmosphere. We are constantly afraid, the graphics are finer for better immersion and the soundtrack is good.
Nevertheless, some passages are really frustrating for their difficulty sometimes poorly measured.

Go to GOG.com and see what’s still free.

I recommend rainbow six siege. It’s super fun.

If you like surfing and FPS, get titanfall 2. I beat that game 3 times because it’s so frikin awesome. Multiplayer is super fun too.

You dont have half life 2 for some weird reason... also steam summer sale. The winter sale comes around Christmas and lasts a bit into the new year. Winter is almost as good as summer.

Try some different kinds of games too. Arma 3 is a military simulator. Some clans have been posting recruitments in LFG. Modding  with steam workshop is super easy. (Literally click a button and it downloads it for you.)

world of Warcraft is free to play up to level 20.

    Try overwatch.

Real time strategy games and “4X” games are loved. Dawn of war dark crusade is my favorite RTS. You can get all 4 original dawn of war and expansions for cheap during a sale. Soulstorm should only be played with the apocalypse mod, the campaign sucks & everything about it sucks except that it has the apocalypse mod.

I have a pc games list in my signature. It’s incomplete but has a lot of games listed. The alphabetical list has the most games in it. Short blurb about gameplay too.

First of all, I recommend you bookmark the following websites so that you can get the best deals on PC games and never overpay for them. I'll start with the best ones first.

    • https://isthereanydeal.com/ - Basically your best bet to never miss a deal. Turquoise tabs are free. You can also find ANY games historical LOW price. VERY useful.
    • https://www.fanatical.com/ - Used to be Bundle Stars. Daily deals usually are decent. https://www.fanatical.com/en/latest-deals is the latest deals. https://www.fanatical.com/en/bundle are the latest bundles. This site is by far the best in 2018 aside from the Steam summer sale.
    • https://www.humblebundle.com/store - This is another great site for games. IMO the Humble monthly is nowhere near worth it. They make it out to be but it's not. The best deals are the free games you earn from visiting the site a certain amount of days in a row. And of course the $1 bundles.
    • https://www.greenmangaming.com/ - Another favorite of mine. Deals can be found but don't let the red % tags fool you. Use https://isthereanydeal.com/ to find historical low.
    • https://www.gog.com/ - This site is mostly for older games. You can still find good ones every now and then though, just not as often. Also GOGalaxy is here. Another gaming client to play games from.
    • https://gamestore.razer.com/home.html - Almost like Green Man Gaming just not as good. Haven't found many deals here but I keep waiting for them to surprise me.
    • https://www.origin.com/usa/en-us/store/browse - They used to have a monthly game they would give away but now they just have deals every now and then. I snagged BF1 and ALL the DLC from here last month for just $5.00. Do NOT sign up for Origin monthly or ANY monthly sub ANYwhere else for that matter. Again, they're just not worth it. My opinion anyway. Origin is also another gaming client you can only play certain games from. BF1/4 and Mass Effect being a few of them.
    • https://uplay.ubi.com/ - Basically like Origin or Steam. Another client to run games on. Sometimes they give away free games so it's something to have on your PC. Some games you can only play through UPlay so just install it. The Division and Watch Dogs 2 being two of those games. I got a good 10 other games for free here during Christmas of 2016. Solid titles too.
    • http://www.hirezstudios.com/ - Another gaming client. Useful to play Paladins, Realm Royale and Smite. ALL free.
    • https://www.blizzard.com/en-us/ - Another gaming client. I had to install this to play Diablo 3. I think you may have to install it to play Overwatch. Can't remember.
    • https://www.epicgames.com/site/en-US/home - Yet another gaming client. I believe this is where you have to play Fortnite from. It's a decent client so I threw it on here.

Well that's all I got just to get you started. I don't think I left out much. Except for Steam but I'm pretty sure you know about them already. Their summer sale is by far the best you'll find to stack up your Steam library. Christmas and Halloween sales are also pretty decent. Pretty much all these sites have sales during major holidays.

Well good luck with your new PC gaming. I hope this helps. I do recommend one more thing you NEED to do asap. Add 1 more stick of 8GB to your PC while the prices are decent right now. It will help to experience very minimal stuttering, if any. With just 8GB, you'll run into stuttering before you know it.

P.S. Free to play games are your best bet while you wait for game sales. Paladins and Warframe being the first you must install and play. Here is more to get you started...

    The Amazing Eternals
    ArcheAge
    Argo
    Atlas Reactor
    Battleborn
    Battlefield 2 Revived
    *Blacklight: Retribution
    BlackShot: Mercenary Warfare
    Black Mesa
    *Black Squad
    *Brawlhalla
    *Creativerse
    Cry of Fear
    Devillian 2
    *Dirty Bomb
    *Dota 2
    Dungeon Defenders 2
    Everquest
    Forza Motorsport 6 Apex
*Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex(I think they shut down, which is a shame)
    Gigantic
    *Goldeneye Source
    *Halo Online
    Hawken
    Heroes and Generals
    Killer Instinct
    Law Breakers
    *League of Legends

    *Team Fortress 2
    Trackmania Nations Forever
    Tribes: Ascend
    Unreal Tournament
    Warface
    *Warframe
    Warmode
    War Thunder
    Wildstar

The ones with an * by them just mean I have them installed on my PC. I know I left out quite a few other free to play games but this list is not my main one so, yea. Also, if I were you, I'd save that $100 for when major sales arise through the sites I have linked to you. They happen just about all the time so saving would be wise to obtain games at their historical lows.

Games like COD & Battlefield aren't that good for me as they go for quite a long time sometimes. Throughout those answers, I liked Quake Champions, Overwatch, Titan Fall 2, Doom 2016, & Rainbow Six Siege.

What genre are you most interested in?

I mostly play first person games like on my list, and I'd like to explore some more with my new pc and also have a different genre of games. So it's really mixed! I'm willing to try new things if they're worth it.

  12. I recently switched from iMac to PC and am loving the flexibility!

I haven't actually downloaded any games apart from my owned steam games and am looking for some suggestions ?

    Old Specs: i5, DDR3 1600 (21.5 1080p)

    New Specs: i7-8700, GTX 1060 6GB, 8GB DDR4 (24" 144hz 1080p 1ms)

    My Current Games:
    Fortnite / CS:GO (I mainly surf) / Rocket League / Minecraft

I can typically spend up to $100 on some new games. I'm willing to extend this to $150 if some games are worth the price. I'm currently looking to buy overwatch / forza horizon 4.

  13. I stumbled across this: https://www.gamedude.com.au/products/shop/phanteks-rgb-led-strip-400mm-msi-mystic-light-sync-ph-ledkt_m4s

But it's only 400 mm, and this is my case:

    23df688ab5e557b2ec3cc7b1d5dc6552.png.f6a2d5eadc994843d912ff2ab4377278.png

So 400mm could only cover the entire length of the bottum of my case, but most pc's with rgb have the strips on all sides of their case (top, bottum, left and right).

For around $20 - 30, wouldn't you expect it to have around 1m or higher cable length? Or is the strip possibly is bright enough to be placed at the bottom, and visibly light the whole pc?

I'm fairly new to the whole "rgb" scene so it'd be nice if I can be informed with this.

PS: There aren't multiple strips, just the single 400mm strip.

If I select the first option, will it automatically change the location of my current applications to my hdd if I choose the hard drive or will it only do it to new applications.

Also, what's the upside to having your "new documents" saved to your ssd? If there is any major speed differences.

What applications are also recommended to have on a 250gb ssd?

  15. I've recently setup my ssd for booting my windows, but how can I customize my hard drive so it's set to the primary storage drive?

I want everything (documents, videos, pictures) etc on my hard drive and only applications I choose such as chrome on my ssd. When I currently look at the location of my documents folder, it is set the my "C:" drive which is my ssd, I know I can change it to my D: (hard drive) but this is just inconvenient to do with every file.

Is there any way to do this so it automatically goes to my 2tb hard drive & not my 250gb ssd?

  16. 19 minutes ago, LAwLz said:

I don't recommend doing the "recovery" option which is built into Windows 10.

From what I know, it is not the same as doing a complete reinstall.

What you want to do is boot from a Windows 10 installation disc.

Then when you are on the partition selection screen, show the advanced options and then just delete all partitions you see. That will mark them as being blank, and nothing from your previous Windows install will be left on them.

When I've reset my current user, and I start re-installing windows.

    0ad488aa06dca7d82635f12a8582e5c9.png.ef7edad90e33446d3081aec6ffa88eb6.png

When this pops up, you mean just delete every drive / partition that is shown apart from my ssd? By doing this, will it also 100% wipe the current 200gb / 2tb used on my hard drive so I can have the original 2tb for optimal usage?

  17. 1 hour ago, lewdicrous said:

You can just do a factory reset if you want to wipe everything from your drives.

If you delete everything then you gotta reinstall drivers.

      Hide contents

    Settings>update&security>recovery>reset this PC

Will this delete my existing user too? Because when I reinstall windows, I don't want to have two users, my current one and the new user with my re-installation. I want to wipe this current account from my monitor completely for a fresh install, if that makes sense?

  18. I'm planning to do a fresh re-install of Windows 10, but before I do this I must wipe both my ssd and hard drive clean and fresh for optimal usage. How can I do this?

Also, when reinstalling windows, will the drivers I installed with my current OS for my bios, motherboard, realtek etc stay? Or will I need to reinstall my drivers for my pc.

After I've wiped the drives, how can I actually get rid of everything on this current OS and reinstall windows?

  19. Ridiculous cost, there won't be an extreme difference between a 250gb or 500gb boot sd, just get a 970 evo samsung m.2 250gb ssd for boot up.

Let's say your steam library is 200 gb's, gta v being 70, other games being around 130, you'd only need around 500gb for games. (I have no idea but generally speaking)

You certainly don't need an ssd for movies, let alone a 4tb ssd.

120GB can be fine for some people, though it is on the smaller sides of things. Windows itself may only take up ~50GB (or more, or less, I'm not sure exactly how much it takes up these days), but once you start installing all of your favourite programs like Chrome, Firefox, VLC, iTunes, Steam, etc it starts to eat up a fair bit of space. 250GB will be plenty for your OS, your programs, and a couple of games depending on their size. Some people may only have one or two games that they play, while other people may have a Steam library full of 500+ games.

To use GTA V as an example since it's a fairly popular game, the game files for GTA V are approximately 80GB.
    image.png.34dfaa31422ccc39f9e567e59feefec6.png

This means that for those with a 120GB SSD, even if that is the only game they want to install on it, there just won't be enough space for it alongside Windows 10.

Of course there are plenty of other games that don't take up as much room as GTA V, but generally speaking if people want to install any games on their SSD, I would recommend a SSD larger than 120GB (250GB at least, 500GB preferably). If, on the other hand, they just wanted a super cheap SSD to install just the OS & a few programs on for an older machine that they aren't gaming on anyway, then 120GB would be fine.

Your OS installs on to the SSD, and then you download your programs from the internet. Your default download folder location is stored on the OS drive (C: drive), which would be your SSD. When you run the installer .exe, after you agree to its terms and click through it will ask you where you want to install the program and it will default to a location likely within C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files(x86). This will install that program on to the SSD.
If you wanted to install it on to the HDD, then you would change that install directory to a different location, such as making a folder on your HDD (D:) called "Programs", so in this case you would change it to D:\Programs.

For the most part you will want to install programs on to your SSD (C Drive), so in most cases you can just leave the install directories to their default without changing and it's no different than installing any other program any other time.

For games, (this applies specifically for Steam, but other Game services such as Origin and uPlay have similar functions) you will typically still install the program Steam on to your SSD, but you can set your Game Library location for Steam to a different drive. This will tell Steam to default install games to that location. You can change the default Game Library location by going to File > Settings > Downloads > Steam Library Folders - as shown in the image below.

    image.png.6cdf86a36dfd7971125985dd97e4e84f.png

In your scenario, you will want to set your game library location to the HDD, so it will be a folder within your D: drive. In this case you could make a folder on D: drive titled "Games" that will be D:\Games.

    image.png.28cb81f34a7a16b3dce58bd70b5c2e3d.png

When you go in to Steam and click to install a game, it will pop up asking you what location you want to install the game to. It will default to whatever your Steam Library Folders is set as the default install folder (which in your case you would have set to D:\Games). However, if you wanted to install your favourite game on to the SSD you will simply tell it to install to the Steam Library Folder that is located on the SSD instead (C:\Program Files(x86)\Steam\").

Thanks that response helped a lot.

You can most definitely use your SSD for storing game files. The only downsides to this is that game files generally take up a large amount of space, and larger capacity models of SSDs are much more expensive than equivalent capacity HDDs. Some games will benefit from being installed on a SSD, while others will not. Generally speaking if the game has long load screens, installing it on an SSD can often help improve those game loading times.
Having games installed on the OS drive will not hinder the performance, or boot time, of the SSD.

80-90mbps (bits) = 10-11MB/s (Bytes). Your typical HDD can typically do sustained writes in excess of 100MB/s.

You won't notice any difference in the time taken to download the game to either the SSD or HDD, since HDD write speed is not limiting your internets download speed.

Install your operating system on it. The biggest improvement SSDs give is in lower latency and they are much, much faster at accessing the data on the drives compared to HDDs. Install your typically used programs, such as chrome/firefox and whatever else on it as well as they will help the program open up much faster when you open it.
If you have enough space left over after your OS and programs are installed, then you can install some games on it. For a 250GB SSD you may only have enough space for one or two of your favourite games, depending on game file size, so consider whether or not that game has loading screens/times that could possibly be improved by being installed on an SSD.

So why don't people just go for a say, 120gb ssd or lower for boot times if windows only takes around 50gb, is it due to other things being installed such as games?

Also, how can you make it so you choose which application you want to download on your ssd

Installing your operating system on to the SSD will give you the most benefit from the SSD. Your computers boot time will likely go from 1-2 minutes down to ~20-30 seconds. Programs will respond much faster as well and you should notice the whole system be more snappy and responsive. I would highly recommend installing your OS on to the SSD.

You can use cloning utilities to clone your existing OS drive to the SSD, providing that the used space on the current OS drive is less than that of the SSD.

However, I would recommend doing a fresh install of windows on to the SSD with the windows installation media just to rule out the possibility of any errors being transferred over that may cause you issues down the line.

Either way you will lose any information that is currently stored on the SSD, so if you have anything stored on it make sure you back it up to a HDD before proceeding.

It's SATA based Samsung 860 evo, so they shouldn't have any issues in that regard.

Do you recommend me to partition the ssd to its full size (250gb) incase anything is somehow on it, as the size of it is 230 gb right now. Same goes for my hard drive.
