  1. I'm running Android 13 on an Asus ROG Phone 7. Audio ducking (automatically dipping the volume of the current audio when other sounds are played) is an accessibility feature I find immensely annoying and would like to disable. My google-fu yields no usable suggestions and what's even more annoying is that this is just a simple toggle on iOS. Do I really need to root my phone in order to get rid of this awful feature? Note: I want to disable all ducking, not just for notifications (I already have dnd permanently enabled). I want to make it so no app is able to duck background audio, ever.
  2. The Sony is still 5Ah, and the GSMArena endurance rating is 115 hours vs. 131 hours on the Asus. My ROG II got 114h back in the day, and gave me all day use for at least the first two years. The need to charge multiple times per day is the main reason I want to switch, besides the myriad of bugs that seemingly multiply weekly at this point. Even greater battery live would be nice, but the capacity on the Sony is not a deal breaker. I've never had a waterproof phone as my daily driver and it's been fine so far, so the lack of waterproofing isn't a dealbreaker for me. It might be once I get used to it though! I super don't care about weight or size, so that's a non issue for me. I'd really love a good phone camera again though, the last phone I had that I truly loved was the Nokia Lumia 1020, and the insane camera performance was a huge part of why I loved it so much. I don't hate the ROG II camera but there have definitely been situations where I've wished it was better. What did you mean by Sony compromising on software updates? Are they known to be bad at that? My ROG II finally got Android 11 in November 2021, a mere 14 months after the general release and a full month after Android 12 launched. That was my last OS update, so I'm not exactly thrilled with Asus' performance there. I guess it comes down to the user experience and OS updates, gonna go read some reviews I guess ...
  3. I need a new phone as my ROG II is getting long in the tooth, and for the first time maybe ever I'm torn between two models: Asus ROG Phone 7 Sony Xperia 1 V Benefits Asus: Double the storage (512GB vs 256GB) 20% larger battery (6Ah vs 5Ah) 116% faster charging (65W vs 30W) Dual type C charging ports (one on long edge one on short edge) Comes with 65W charger (vs. no charger) Benefits Sony: Way better camera Waterproof (IP65/68 vs. IP64, presumably port covers open/closed) Wireless charging Expandable storage Better fingerprint reader Performance: Both run the Qualcomm SM8550-AB Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The ROG seems to have a performance edge in testing, but I doubt I'll notice. Display: Both feature similar size high refresh rate OLEDs with no cuts, holes, notches or bends. - Asus: 1080x2448 (~395 ppi) 165Hz - Sony: 1644x3840 (~643 ppi) 120Hz I'd rather have the higher resolution than the higher refresh rate here, but the deciding factor would be minimum brightness if I had any way to know which can go the darkest ... Storage: I hate having to think about storage, and with 363GB in use on my current phone 256GB won't cut it meaning I'd have to buy an SD card for the Sony. There are other benefits to both too, I'm only listing the ones I care about. I can get both for the same price, but if I preorder the Sony before it launches on July 4th I get a WH-1000XM5 headset for free. I don't really need it but it definitely doesn't hurt and it sure as hell offsets the added cost of having to buy an SD card ... My nearly 4 years old ROG Phone II is getting more buggy by the minute and the battery's dying. It's also very fragile, only phone I've had to repair twice. Screen cracked both times (first time the gorilla glass was unscathed, the the OLED itself suffered a small hairline crack) and both times every single pixel died within 20 minutes of the crack appearing. The dual USB ports are surprisingly useful though, both for peripheral devices and charging. I'd actually rather have that than wireless. I guess it really boils down to battery life (and longevity), charging speed (and included charger) and the Asus user experience vs. a much better camera, waterproofing and the Sony user experience. I already know what the Asus experience is like, and while I'm not a huge fan I also don't hate it. I haven't used an Xperia in close to a decade so I have no idea what to expect there. Any relevant input is appreciated, especially if you've used Xperia 1 phones and the 1 IV and 1 V in particular. I can't wait for Labs to make these posts redundant! PS: Why these two models specifically? They're the only models I'm aware of that fulfill my criteria: - OLED display with no holes, cuts, curves or notches - Good stereo front firing speakers - High end chip and sufficient RAM - 3.5mm jack
  4. The crash has occurred after an hour of use, just after logging in, while booting, while selecting Windows Advanced boot options and in the BIOS. I pulled out my GPU and three out of four RAM sticks, but that didn't seem to fix it. It has never crashed in Safe Mode, but I only tried that after pulling the GPU and RAM. Haven't tried letting it sit in BIOS for a prolonged time, but it seems subjectively more stable after pulling the components. Normal boot crashes same as ever. So like the title suggests, I think Distributed COM is to blame. I keep getting flooded with DCOM errors, and I'm trying to tackle them one at a time. I thought I'd narrowed it down to the Event ID 10016 Distributed COM error I keep getting before a crash, but I discovered that these are actually generated right after the crash, not before. I've had several, and they all complain that application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM server application [...] I've been able to fix the 10016 errors where "Local Service" needed permission, by using the Component Services program to add "Local Service" as a user and grant local activation rights. However, the one I'm seeing now is using my user, and adding my user to the list and giving myself local activation rights did not help. The application in question is named RuntimeBroker, see the attached picture. Picture also shows that the App ID from the error report (below) corresponds to RuntimeBroker. My local user got replaced with my Microsoft Account when I added it, could that be what's causing the issue? Or are the DCOM errors all red herrings and my issue is something else entirely? Attached is permission settings for RuntimeBroker and my Event Viewer log from just before the crash. The two 10016 at 11:57 have the same exact error text. The next error is EventLog informing that the previous system shutdown at 11:56:50 was unexpected. I haven't gotten to the 10010 and 10005 errors yet, who are all complaining about various servers failing to register with DCOM or failing to start with error "1084". Any ideas? 5. The laptop was originally running Windows, and in the display settings it was set to external display only. I did a clean install of Ubuntu, but it refused to boot properly. Dead internal display. I then did a clean install of Arch Linux (Gnome 3.30.2). Wayland didn't even detect the display, but X11 does. It just can't output anything to it, or maybe it can't power it on. Trying to extend the desktop yields varying results depending on the settings, when I tried native on both (4k internal 1080p external) the external showed a 200% enlarged image of the top left quarter of my desktop. Setting both to 1080p gave me a black screen with a cursor on the external, and still nothing on the internal. Trying to set the internal display to 60Hz defaults the resolution to a ludacris 7680 x 4320, changing the resolution also changes the refresh rate back to 120Hz. The panel is natively 4k @ 120Hz. I'm new to Linux, but I need a Linux environment for work and the VM I'm currently running is a lot of hassle and is sometimes extremely slow. I don't know if it's a driver issue or if Windows somehow has access to parts of the motherboard that Linux can't find or what's actually going on here. Any suggestions are most welcome! Also, Synergy won't work properly. Yay. Edit: Mirroring also gives a black screen with cursor on the external.
  6. But can I disable notifications ONLY when the app is open? I still want notifications when I'm using other apps and when the phone is locked...
  7. The title says it all. Facebook Messenger keeps generating notification banners for every. single. message i receive, even when I have the app open. Given that my smart watch gives a buzz every time a notification appears in the system tray it gets incredibly annoying when I'm in a conversation in the app. Why are apps even allowed to generate system notifications when they are open? Just give me a notification in the app itself! Does anyone know a way to stop this behaviour without affecting notifications when the app ISN'T open? Android 8.1
  8. Oh, I'm already on Floatplane (same nick). I was just wondering if there's an FP forum/subforum somewhere for feature suggestions etc.
  9. Hey, another new member! We should make a club B-)
  10. Apparently I can say hi here, so... hi. Is this where all the cool kids hang out? Also, is there really no subforum for Floatplane? Bugs/issues, user feedback, suggestions, that sort of thing? Or is there a forum feature on FP, and I'm just too dumb to find it?
