  1. I am going for a Hardware RAID controller in this case. Thanks for the info though!
  2. Thanks for all of the insight guys, I am taking all of this into account before I go ahead with my choices. I may be possibly buying a 9260-8i from a friend, however it is good to know that the Fujitsu card should perform similar if I do need one. I am really aiming to maximise the space I can get from the drives. Is there a possibility of going RAID 50 in this case? or should i sacrifice the performance for fault tolerance and just go RAID 6? I have personally gone with the 4tb platters as I have heard that these platters perform better than 2 and 3tb. Is this true or just a myth I will be open to changing the number of drives I buy if a different RAID level is used. Also I am considering buying Hitachi NAS drives as opposed to WD or Seagate. Would their lower failure rate offer any kind of extra inherent fault tolerance due their reputation of being very reliable? or am I just rolling the dice too much with this one here.... Once again, thanks a heap for your help. I really appreciate your advice on this one
  3. Hi guys and gals, I'm planning to build a RAID 5 array and I am halfway down the track with parts, however I am a bit stuck on what kind of RAID controller card to go with. One that is affordable that is >.< Just for background info, the array will be 3x 4TB drives to start with, possibly expanding in the future. I have read quite a few reviews which mostly mention LSI being one of the best in the business, however they are very hard to snag for a low price. Also Areca are very renowned by most reviews I have seen. I am also considering Adaptec, however I have seen that their performance can degrade quite significantly over their life. Then again, I don't really know what factors contribute to this degrading either. Any who.... I am really aiming to score a card for less than $350, new or second hand doesn't bother me. I have seen this card listed on ebay for about $150 in working condition, second hand; however I thought that I would open this up for debate before I commit to buying any card. http://globalsp.ts.fujitsu.com/dmsp/Publications/public/ds-py-raid-56-6G-D2616.pdf I am interested in the fact that the card is based on LSI, or would this not really correlate to any higher performance/quality? Looks similar to the LSI 9260 8i, but is it capable of a similar performance? Also, is there any advantage to having an upgradable cache either? Thanks in advance (:
  4. Just after raving about the Moto E..... damn
  5. I am a bit confused here. There is no reason to use Apple? I agree with most of what you're saying that if you don't have a problem, then don't switch. If it's not broken, don't fix it. I do not entirely agree with your last statement however. The smart person would be using the right tool for the right job, rather than using a familiar tool which may be much more than what is required for the task. My point is though, in your case, that you do not see a gain in investing time into researching into particular phones to determine the best one for value, given the specific tasks. For general consumers, this time is money, and your money depends on the kind of income you earn. So depending on the kind of income your pull each year, it either may or may not be worth investing the time into determining the best tool fit for the job. I 'm assuming in your scenario that it probably isn't worth your time, and that is fair enough. However I am assuming that most people do not fall into this category.
  6. You have gone well off topic of my argument in the first place, that the Price vs Performance factor is definitely in favour of Motorola in this case. Perhaps base your 'claims' on some fact before you go calling bullshit on everyone else. 1. You still have not provided any evidence to support your claim that the Trulimnos Display is crap, let alone can prove that the LG panels are any better anyway (btw, you didn't answer that one either). Let me just remind that these type of panels or used in televisions TODAY, so I would base your claims on fact next time. 2. Your statement about 3GS' and other Flagship phones are opinion, not fact. You can't account for every persons choice, only what you see. This is probably a biased view based on your stance towards Apple as well. A friend of mine from work uses an iPhone 3G, not by choice, but from the fact that his iPhone (5, 4 or w/e) screen was smashed and was being repaired. This is no support for your theory about long lasting quality, rather it is mostly people who keep their previous phone as insurance that they lose their current one. Take a photo of someone in public using a 3GS to support your claim, it would be the first thing you supply as some form of evidence in your argument. Don't just make outrageous claims that you cannot back up with some fact. 3. 'You people'? How dare you. We should be calling you, 'you people' to be honest. I would just like to let you know that iPhone's are one of the most expensive, standard model, phones on the market, compared to any other android flagship phone (I'm talking averages, not specifics. If you used a Trimmed Mean to represent this comparison in price, it would blow Apple out of the ballpark entirely in this example). This is not the point though. The point is that Apple don't even offer the option for a higher resolution like ALL other flagship phones do. I think LAwLz has explained this point well enough in his last post. If we agree that "X is good enough", progress does slow and WHY would Apple change things if their users are happy with what the have? They can just keep charging the same price for each new iPhone with the same screen resolution (not that they aren't doing that now). The battery in an iPhone isn't even 2000mAh.... Apple are really just cutting corners and are trying to force their users to own multiple chargers in order to keep their phone on 24/7 (Don't forget, a legitimate Apple Charger and Cable will cost over $50). Just look at Misanthrope's post, the Samsung Note II had a longer endurance than an iPhone 5s. There are more facts here so far than you have provided in any of your argument's in any post's. I could say the same about you based on your rebuttal. You have not based of your claims on any facts, rather anecdotes. This is clearly not a reliable measure, as stated by LAwLz that even humans have their own deficiencies that we can not always take into account when giving our own opinions (particularly with sight). Once again, you are just using your personal life experiences and are not describing any details (aka facts) in your argument. What do you think is happening? Since you are such a 'tech enthusiast', I would have expected some more details rather than hot air. \ You're basing your opinion on KitKat from the Samsung derivative OS on the phone, obviously since you haven't helped your relative and flashed the phone to a vanilla version. And wtf are you on about with '4 years software support'? Legit, Apple have had the same fucking UI since 2008. I'll put up the screenshots if you would like, but it's a waste of time for myself to even bother. iCloud? If you bought an Apple product in particular just to use iCloud, then you may as well fork out $3000 and buy a Titan Z to have 4K gaming with PhysX, or the same with 780Ti Sli. w/e. it's the same principle regardless. This is propietray and some people are simply lazy or don;t like change. Shit some people in life don't even like challenges and just want to walk down easy street 24/7. Either you only know one person in life, that being your relative with the GS4 (which BTW I never recommended or said was any better than an iPhone), or you are just stating the obvious feature that Apple cannot compete with in this scenario. Have you ever considered that some people don't like simplicity and would rather be 'stimulated' in life sometimes? Sometimes you need to just learn new things to live in modern reality, otherwise, you get left behind with the sheep. Also, did you ever consider that people switch to android because they are annoyed by the restrictions of iOS? Well, I don't like to be called a douche bag just as much as the next guy, you obviously have taken the TITLE CASE wording as 'yelling' rather than a 'dramatization in writing'. Please don't question my intelligence either, I enjoy physics more than enjoy putting Apple fan boys in their place. Did i say that other phones are invincible? Sure didn't! But my $350 Z1 sure can take quite a beating compared to the average iPhone 5s. Let alone it is rated at IP58. Apple is only now only about to introduce waterproof technology in their new line of iPhone's, to keep up with the rest of the flagship phones. Do you see Apple doing anything extra (in terms of hardware, not apps or faps), that other android flagship phones have to adapt? Try listing one, go on. Retina display, yeah right.... Oh, and Apple was probably the last company to do anything about stopping people from cracking their screens. They love extra revenue where ever they can pick it up. http://www.treehugger.com/gadgets/iphone-users-have-spent-6-billion-broken-phones.html My own claims? What claims are you making? that ~300ppi is the max you can see from 10-12 inches away? Is your iPhone still in tact at this point as well? The idea of regret comes from the fact that you are disagreeing with LG's statements that 'Retina Display' definition is a fat, whopping load of Apple pie. It isn't a standard by anyone's means but Apples, and anyone else silly enough to believe such fairy tales. Just because Job's said so doesn't give it factual base whatsoever. On a final note, 1. You have compared Samsung in so many references that it wasn't even warranted to do so in the first place. Where, in any of my post's, did i refer to a GS4/5. I am not defending Samsung at all either. I am however saying that you can obtain a very similar value from a Motorola Moto G as you do from any iPhone, for the general, non-exorbitant consumer. The Moto E is due to hit the market soon, and it will be just as REALISTICALLY priced as the Moto E. 2. 'Retina Display' definition, is only something Apple have endorsed. I would not call it 'scientific' by any means. There are hundreds of criticism's over the claim that the human eye can only see around 300ppi at about 10-12 inches. Job's said it to make people fap harder. 3. Apple's net worth is so big, how can you substantiate that Apple is offering the best quality for their phones while maintaining the highest profit margin of any smartphone in the market, let alone the quantity that are bought. Please provide some fact here before you even approach this one again. PS - I forgot that you insulted me earlier for purchasing the Z1 instead of a Z1s (first off, they're pretty much the same damn phone. I'm not a fan of the Apple tactic of prefixed 'i's or suffixed 's')'. Next time, consider the demographics of the poster. Australia does not have T-mobile. Also, I buy my phones outright or second hand in order to exploit better phone deals with 'secondary' carriers.
  7. Do you even know who manufacture the iPhone panels? And also do you even know what kind of specs the Triluminos display offers before you go making that statement? I have compared this in real life, and I honestly disagree with you entirely there. That is a matter of opinion and not fact. I bought this phone as it has more than the capabilities that I will need in a phone for the next three years, let alone it was only one month old and was nearly half the price of a brand new model. (unless Dev's stop patenting every fucking thing they make, in particular Apple. Apple Patent Lawsuits are destroying innovation imo) Even if i considered an iPhone, i'd be extremely lucky to get anything in as close to the condition my Z1 is for less than $500. I think if you would have a look at the Price vs. Performance analysis between these two phones, I think you would find yourself terribly wrong for a start. The iPhone would obviously cream the Motorola in every other aspect, the point I was making is that you don't have to surrender $1000USD every time a new iPhone comes out, because really they only cost probably a fifth of that in materials. R&D, marketing and all that other bs does not account for the remaining overhead on the phone. Were talking Apple here, God damn fucking Apple, a company that is worth more than most developed countries. Do you think they got to this position by being ethical and actually selling phones valued near their cost? The few excuses Apple give for not having 1080p screens are concepts such as 'Retina Displays'. Why don't they just call it RetinaX ffs, LG have just about debunked this one for us all here. Are you honestly using this as some kind of 'pro' for going with an iPhone? You must be off your chops to think Apple aren't doing this..... (and have been for a longer time than android flagship phones) Well I'm not the bloke here mate. I'm not IT illiterate or biased towards simplicity vs control. Obviously you're the bloke in this situation since you are talking about the iPhone as if you work for Apple or sell their products on late night infomercials. (I'm guessing that it was infomercials and you hit the jackpot selling iPhone's and moved to UAE to live it up! ) Are you from Mars? You're starting to scare me with these claims. Most people stick with iPhones because they are IT illiterate or biased towards change, particularly from iOS to android for the IT illiterate (they simply won't do it because they can't find their "iApplications", just take the 'i' out of everything >.>). I know for a fact there are millions of people who own an iPhone and are unable to turn a desktop computer on/off. That consumer is also getting jagged by all of the other streams in which Apple generate proift. The main one notably would have to be the cables and chargers for iPhones. You could just about buy a Motorola Moto G for the price of 2 charger packs and two cables, Apple brand. The Moto G would probably come charged as well! (well it definitely shouldn't, but for the lol's) *REAL LIFE - JUST BOUGHT AN IPHONE 5 ON DAY ONE FOR $1000 - NEK MINUTE - DROPPED ON THE FLOOR FROM ABOUT HALF A METRE, SHATTERED SCREEN, $200 REPAIR FROM SHOP OR FACE VOIDING WARRANTY IF I DIY* Does that not strike you as more of a reality for iPhone quality? Let alone long lasting.... Try find someone who still uses a 3rd gen iPhone, and isn't using it because they just broke their next-gen version by dropping it (before Apple went to a sapphire screen). At least they created a derivative of the phone for a premium price which offered a sapphire screen. At the end of the day, you are making just excuses for Apples shortcomings in terms of their products and are trying to defend it by stating the colour of a Z1 is 'washed out'. Either you own an iPhone and are regretting it by reading this article or you work for/are paid off by Apple somehow Why pay more for less.
  8. I'm guessing that you either own an iPhone or work in design/arts field of some kind, but that is a legitimately crap excuse for having a low pixel density. Samsung is becoming more like Apple in terms of it's phones, so i wouldn't use a GGS5 as a primer example for comparing here. I'm not defending it's colour saturation whatsoever, but I wouldn't buy a samsunug myself. I managed to pick up a Sony Xperia Z1 for $350 off ebay in almost new condition, because the bloke wasn't used to an android OS and was going back to an iOS phone. His loss, my very large gain However I cite this comparison (from phonearena) between a Motorola Moto G and an iPhone 5s. http://www.phonearena.com/phones/compare/Motorola-Moto-G,Apple-iPhone-5s/phones/8208%2C7710 I'm not saying that the screens are the same in anyway, but consider the cost of these two phones and the fact that the specs are so similar, a rational person would buy the Motorola Moto G on those facts.
  9. This is based on the fact that the G-sync Modules/hardware used in the monitors are designed by Nvidia and that only the 'G-Sync' features are available to those who use Nvidia cards. The new G-Sync monitors will probably cost as much as new high end cards. Who knows how good the new Monitor hardware is to be honest, I would have no clue how to benchmark that. All I know is that the frequency clock (w/e it's called) inside are variable instead of fixed now, probably in that special 'Nvidia' way too >.< You would generally assume (particularly a company that holds itself as high as Nvidia does) that they have spent a lot of time preparing and tuning this feature so that it can deliver at the highest quality. Of course there's probably a premium attached to that too. ATI4LYF
  10. Well it's stated in the article that monitors coming out in 6-12 months time will have the 1.2a HDMI Port available. It probably won't change the cost noticeably either. The Free Sync doesn't require new hardware, the monitors will have the hardware capabilities without having to modify it yourself (like g-sync in its current state). Free Sync ("Adaptive Sync") just changes the way which GPU's and monitors sync with one another. Sure only some of the nest ATI cards support this, however it is an open standard with VESA and Nvidia will most likely have to bend over and adapt the new ports to there futures cards to remain competitive with ATI's costing. I wouldn't buy a special G-sync monitor that would only work with Nvidia cards when ATI offer their cards to do the same job without the premium price for a G-Sync monitor. It will probably become futile as these new 1.2a monitors come out (imo).
  11. I thought it would be adopted by Nvidia in it's future cards so that users have the option of both. For those who really want the finer detail, G-sync probably could give a better experience; but at a higher cost. But I thought AMD's Free Sync was open standard too?
  12. I know that you didn't make that statement >.<, I'm just more concerned about the claims by Crucial but I guess it's no different from most other A-brand manufacturers
