So I'm trying to understand how PCIe lanes work on a motherboard - as they don't make sense to me, unless not every lane can actually be populated. Take for example the ASUS PRIME Z790-P WIFI D5: Z790 motherboard. Paired with a 14700k, the 14700k has 20 total PCIe lanes. 1x PCIe 5.0 x16 PCIe Slot on the top slot 3x PCIe 4.0 x4 PCIe Slots underneath 1x PCIe 3.0 slot between the bottom 2 PCIe slots If my math is correct, aren't you wildly over the PCIe lane limitation set by CPU if you populate each slot? 1st slot = x16 2nd slot = x4 3rd slot = x4 4th slot = x1 5th slot = x4 Doesn't that result in 27 possible lanes? And what about m.2 slots, surely some of those get eaten up? The manual offers no clarification other than a "suggested GPU layout" for 2+ GPU's: So, how does this work? CAN you use all slots are their full speeds? Or no?

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but I've noticed a potentially pretty big opportunity for floatplane in my hometown of Pittsburgh, PA. The Pirates and the Penguins are losing their regional sports network cable provider. In what's a really rare circumstance, the contract to televise these games is going up for bid. Right now, they're struggling to find a cable partner to continue airing content. Pittsburgh is a small market, so finding the right partner for local rights is unsurprisingly a bit difficult. I wonder if Linus/Luke/Floatplane could make a compelling argument to both sports clubs to get out of the dying cable business and use floatplane to host their own games. Maybe even within each of their teams' apps as a white label product. I think it'd be pretty compelling to make a pitch that they could keep all the money from advertisements being aired and charge a more substantial floatplane monthly fee commiserate with sports cable packages (say, $15-$20 a month?) to stream games rather than selling all their rights in a lump sum.

I think it would be a multi-step process for sure. First step would be to decide on a form factor, and begin there. This wouldn't be "take every person's idea" and implement it, but a process of narrowing down a case design that reflects ideas and concepts the community wants to see. I'm sure there'd be lots of polls and concepts thrown out there, it'd be up to me and everyone else here to determine what seems like the most fun and interesting. Obviously it's impossible to make something that's everything to everyone, but it is possible to make something appealing that fits a niche nothing else is fulfilling.

I think the community here is pretty hardcore. Whatever design or direction we would go in has a lot of potential to be novel or at the very least different than what's out there. Personally speaking, I think it'd be neat to see some more affordable plex non-rackmount desktop options for piling a bunch of drives into. Or maybe a more affordable SFFPC case that caters to a specific community desire. Lots of fun options.

Hi everyone, Longtime member, mostly lurker in the LTT community. As a fellow nerd with the rest of you, I've had a passion for PC hardware for a long time. A few friends and I started up a little case company, we all have careers so this really just in our spare time between family and work. We've been working on some neat design concepts (small form factor stuff, modular cases), nothing to sell yet (prototyping and procurement is so much trickier than it seems) but I was curious to gauge the interest in a community-led case project. There's no right or wrong way to start this, but I'd love to make something that's designed by the LTT community for the LTT community. Obviously, I can't promise anything without knowing what the design is, but I'd love to make it available for anybody who wants one to purchase one. If it gets to that stage, maybe we throw up a kickstarter or an indiegogo to get it off the ground (anyone who has worked with manufacturing before will know the primary obstacle is purchase order size). So feel free to vote in the poll: should we make an LTT Community Designed Case?

Oh dang, I didn't respect a reply from the god bod @LinusTech. Thanks for taking the time! Reading back I came off a bit more antagonistic than I meant, I was truly just curious. As an unsolicited suggestion, I truly would love to see videos more clearly highlighted that are floatplane exclusive (or timed exclusives) as it just makes my life easier when scanning over content I might've already caught on YouTube. I know you met approximately 10,000 people at LTX 2019, and I was one of them. We chatted for about 30 seconds about starting my own case company and how I would absolutely destroy you at scrapyard wars (still true). Been working on an LLC, meeting with vendors, finding parts, and testing designs for the past year, and my first case is coming out in a few months, so just thank you for the inspiration and the encouragement, it meant a lot.

I preface this with saying that floatplane could literally produce 0 content and I'd still subscribe, I just like supporting LTT/Luke. But, I have a few questions when looking at the site in general: How is floatplane doing in general? I don't see a strong push around LTT to add more creators, is this intentional? Is LTT no longer posting "Vessel-Style" timed exclusive content (I want to say Vessel used to have about a week/2week buffer ahead of youtube)? If so, what is the pitch for people to subscribe to Floatplane beyond better quality? With that exclusive content being the main draw of Floatplane, is there a reason that exclusive content isn't more bolded and highlighted on the site? There's probably a more elegant UI way to do this, but I think having differing colored video borders, or perhaps like a gold border around exclusive/timed exclusive videos with text that reads that makes a lot of sense. I think Floatplane is a really neat concept, and I think a lot of other creators are catching on to similar concepts (curiosity stream and others). I think it's being a touch under-utilized/under-advertised by LTT.

If I could figure out either: A. What a straight riser needs those holes for (is it just cheaper to manufacture one type of mount with screw holes on them?) B. If when a riser has screw holes, is that a standardized width or is it random?

Hi everyone. Very random question, if anyone knows the answer to this I'd owe them big time! Does anyone know if the screw locations on PCIE riser cables are standardized, and if so, what that standard width is? I've been able to snag 3 of them, and they all seem the same, but I'm not 100% certain if that always holds true. I'm not exactly sure where riser manufacturers (particularly ones with straight connectors) plan for customers to actually screw them in with a normal case, but it'd be super helpful for me to figure out.

Here’s my very strong recommendation for almost anyone traveling to LTX next year who lives in the states: fly to Seattle, rent a car, and take the gorgeous 2.5-3 hour drive up. Here’s why: It will be leaps and bounds cheaper than flying direct (it looks like it’s fairly easy to get a flight from Dallas to Seattle for under $200) Probably faster overall If you were going to rent a car anyway that’s a moot point Really is a beautiful drive Added bonus going to Seattle means you’re close to a TON of gaming stuff you can check out (take a tour of valve, Nintendo, bungie, Microsoft, unity, and more!) But more importantly than all else: you don’t have to go through airport customs which is an absolute nightmare and takes so long, it almost made me miss my connecting flight both directions (to and from). You just have to cross the border which takes 20-30 mins tops. On top of that, strongly consider getting an AirBnB instead of a hotel to save money. Hotels in downtown Vancouver are absurd (upwards of $400-$600 for decent). My four day stay in Canada cost me $38 (total!!! Not per night) for a place 30 mins from downtown.

Can't speak for everyone else here, but my diet and exercise regime could use a real kick into gear. Who doesn't want to feel their best meeting tons of new people? On top of that we'll be walking around for hours and then crushing it all night in the convention center. Being in prime physical condition couldn't hurt. So I'm issuing a challenge to all the LTX Convention Goers who want to get into shape: we have 149 days until the convention, that's a good chunk of time to shed some extra pounds or build some healthy new habits. Whatever your goal, as long as it contributes towards being healthier/fitter, it slots here. Whatever that means for you. I'm shooting to lose 40lbs before the convention and start cooking more and eating out less (I'm hoping my 2XL expo shirt doesn't fit at all). If you're in, describe your goal and commit to posting at least once a week to track your progress and report in with the team here. If there's enough interest, I'll start cobbling together some google sheets to track our progress as a group week by week. Only commit if you're willing to really "go for it." Like, unironically wearing socks and sandals "go for it." Best of luck to everyone, super amped for LTX 2019!

Hey everyone, I'm trying to throw together a plex media streaming build. I have 4x 4tb 3.5 HDDs, and at most I'd be streaming 2 uncompressed blu-rays at once. I also wouldn't mind having something that can encode pretty quickly. Any recommendations/builds? (Also, would you guys recommend doing Windows or like a FreeNAS software? Just wondering)

I don't post often on these forums, but I have to say I feel compelled to throw another supporting voice behind Linus: Through a process of "tech-osmosis," I have learned so much from Linus' videos, I honestly don't know how I kept up to date with accurate information before I started watching. That alone is unbelievably valuable. For me, it makes the argument over from the outset. I literally could not pay someone to teach me as much as Linus has, making any other factors irrelevant. But let's assume he's taking these massive windfalls from various tech corporations and everything he's ever said is tainted by malicious corruption. Is his opinion really ever that far off base? I honestly cannot recall a single review where Linus is glorifying/criticizing something so beyond the general opinion/consensus on a product. Can you? The only exception I can recall where his opinion varied vastly from other critics would be the Apple Watch review. But in that instance, the baseline opinion was from tech reviewers taking money from Apple or afraid of being put on the Apple "blacklist." Or, for God's sake, how many times has he taken shots at the people paying him? He straight up makes fun of the corporate board of Best Buy for thirty seconds in a 7 minute video. This is all insane to me. I hope Linus doesn't get deterred by a few naysayers. Criticism is fine, but a witch hunt is another thing.

Hmmm! That's pretty interesting! What do you think about possibly a matrox card? http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/display_wall/mura_mpx_series/ Apparently they make GPUs for wall setups. Although... my guess is considering they don't have any prices listed, they're probably gouging customers who don't know any better.

Hey guys, so I'm looking to help my friend build a PC for his new small business office. He wants a PC that can power six monitors on a wall all displaying a singular image like this: http://i.imgur.com/buo7t5W.jpg I have no idea how this could be done, so I don't want to make something and have it not be possible. So here's some questions: 1. Is such a display like this possible? Displaying one image across multiple monitors? 2. If so, can it display powerpoints/videos in the same format (separating one image across multiple monitors)? 3. How powerful of a PC does this need to be to run these displays (he won't be playing any games, or anything like that, like I said, it just needs to run powerpoint/video at the most)? 4. What monitors would be best for this? Is there a brand with a super thin bezel (refresh-rate, even bezel is not paramount, just the thinnest bezel possible)?

Ya! I'd love to hear your results! I'm still undecided if upgrading is worth it or not, but it's really interesting hearing everyone's ideas.

I completely understand maximizing the capability of what you're paying for, but I'm looking for some hardline comparisons that show how useful overclocking actually is. Just wondering if dropping $80+ on a decent cooling system is worth it. Am I going to get $80 worth of performance increase.
