So I have a little car amplifier I wanna use to run my (annoyingly) passive subwoofer on (its only a 160w amp but should be enough). Problem is its 12v DC and we use 120v AC for house power. So I thought why not get just get an inverter?!! Yeah..... I forgot that these amplifiers can draw anything from 5 amps to several hundred amps depending on its rating.... This amplifier would probably max out our 15 amp circuit breaker by itself... Having a led acid car battery (most likely 35amp) to run off inside would be ideal but highly unappreciated by my parents due to the toxins released from it and sealed batteries are quite expensive..... Any thoughts?

    dont turn up

    if its 160w, assume its like 180w

    12x15 = 180w, 12v x 15a = 180w

    Got it working at max no problem :) Turns out it seems to pull just over an amp (AC) at full gain with 2 subs and a shitty speaker on it. Then again I shouldn't be surprised. 12v what ever amps its pulling (DC) is different then 120v AC Too much distortion at high gain though best performance at around a third.

    im pushing 12v 2a on a 15v amp board, and it sufficiently powers my sub quite well

    pc -> preamp -> splitter -> my 'crossover' (equalizer set to +12db on 35-200hz, twice since its a stereo one and im using it as mono), my amp

    'crossover' -> amp (cheapo ebay board) -> subwoofer

    amp -> left= -5db, right = -0db -> right has my left/right tweeters, left has my midranged

    midranged is quieter because i like it when it doesn't overpower, and i like my music with sharper highs and deeper lows

    total: 2 midranged, 2 tweeters, 1 subwoofer
