Time for an update to Project New Client, seeing that some of the details have finally been decided on. Firstly, the GTX 1060 6GB will not be used as an eGPU for the EliteBook 8770W. The hope is that, while this laptop will allow me to remote into Project Personal Datacentre when necessary, it will also decrease my dependency on such measures (due to this bump in specs), which is especially useful in environments with bad/congested/compromised networks. The Quadro M5000M got kicked from the GPU options, due to lack of modern features and negligible performance difference when compared to the 880M and 980M. Reduced HDD specs to match already-acquired hardware, since I'll be using the HDD that I already have. Updated OS options as well. With that, here are the updated specs:

  • HP EliteBook 8770w
    • 17-inch 1080p DreamColor (10-bit) Display
    • choice of either
    • GPU choice(s) of either:
    • either:
      • 8GB (2x4GB) PC3-12800 DDR3-1600 or
      • 16GB (2x8GB) PC3-12800 DDR3-1600 **
    • 2TB 5900RPM SATA 6Gbps HDD
    • Optical drive choice of either
      • Blu-ray R/RE DVD+/-RW SuperMulti DL drive ** or
      • DVD+/-RW SuperMulti DL
    • No webcam, but include a microphone
    • HP 8-cell Lithium-Ion Battery (83 WHr)
    • External HP 230W Slim Smart AC adapter (with HP Fast Charge)
    • dual-boot (Windows 10 Pro + Mac OS X El Capitan or Mojave))
  • HP Advanced Docking Station
  • Logitech M510 Wireless Mouse

Options marked with ** are ones that might not make the final cut, due to price. In these instances, the next best option will be considered.

FYI, this is a planned replacement for my ProBook 6475b.

On a side note, just upgraded all of my Core2Duo MacBooks to 4GB DDR2. The MacBook Pro was a bit too picky for its own good, and only accepted the slower 667MHz sticks. The black MacBook took the 800MHz sticks and flew with'em. I guess the 17-inch MacBook Pro will be getting axed first when my upgrade starts...

Welp, this is getting delayed to at least 2020 (since the workstation/server hybrid comes first).

I guess I'm not the only one who's avoiding the new market for mobile hardware...
