  1. I'm currently in the planning phase and the budget isn't set so I was just getting a feel of things. My concern was more about putting too much on the CPU (in terms of $) leaving not enough for a decent GPU to play games (even more that he'll want to play games at 4K since he's used to it with his XBOX, but I do know that you do need some serious horsepower on PC to have decent framerates at that resolution). Thanks! I'm aware of the new GPUs coming out soon, hence why I was planning now since older stock sometimes go on sale or the new GPU becomes great value for the money. Like I said, I'm just trying to balance the budget right now to see how much can be put on a GPU vs CPU, etc.
  2. Budget (including currency): around 1500 $ CAD Country: Canada Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: OBS (Streaming), Games (Call of Duty, small games from Steam, etc.) Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Hello! I'm currently planning a build for a friend who started streaming (xbox games and using his laptop for OBS) and now wants to play and stream pc games to. Given a limited budget, I was wondering if it is viable to move some of the OBS workload to the NVENC encoder (RTX series) in order to buy a cheaper CPU (freeing some budget for a better GPU), or if I had to put more into a higher core count CPU (meaning a cheaper GPU). Would the encoder on a RTX 2070 be good enough for current streaming platforms? What about when H265 streaming becomes a thing? Currently looking at : AMD R5 3600X Nvidia RTX 2070 2x16gb RAM 3200Mhz AMD B550 Motherboard 650W PSU 1 x NVME boot drive, 1 x SSD (game library), 1 x HDD (storage, footage, etc)
  3. I've been using Manjaro for a couple years now and I'm a big fan of it for daily use and gaming. It's simple, pretty robust and has an active community on their forums if you need help setting things up. The main benefit is that you have access to the arch wiki (Manjaro is based on Arch) in order to troubleshoot what's wrong with your games and install the missing components (also validate that your game is compatible, because not all games that are tagged steamOS actually work). https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Steam/Game-specific_troubleshooting Also, you will have access to the latest version of wine without adding extra repositories (PPA on Ubuntu) making it easier for a newcomer.
  4. Yesterday I had an issue where I heard a pop in my headphones and the whole pc froze. Pushing yhe power button on the case didn't do anything and I had to use the psu switch to turn the pc off. This morning I removed the motherboard to inspect it and I did find a white spot at one of the audio controller pin. There also seem to be some potential discoloration near one of the chip on the board (near the gpu pci-e slot). I also had issues recently where my gpu would randomly stop working but the rest of the pc would keep working fine (that gpu is currently sent for RMA, using my old gpu in the meantime). Question: what could cause all of this? Is it just a defective MB or could it be linked to a defective psu? Could my MB be overheating hence xausing damage over time? My temps looked fine in the past in HW monitor but I know it doesn't give the full picture. Note: one of the discoloration somewhat look like a fingerprint but it's a bit too big and I'm usually careful when handling the board. Asus strix B350-f amd ryzen 1600x @ 4.0 gHz Corsair RM650x fractal design define C with 2 + 1 120mm fans Cryorig h7 cooler Msi rx 580 gaming x 8gb gpu (sent for rma, using zotac 650ti 1gb in the mean time)
  5. Is the black screen something you get randomly or constantly now? Have you tried to put the GPU into the second pci-e slot on the motherboard?
  6. It didn't solve the issue either, and I don't really understand why this issue wouldn't of appeared for about a year until recently if it was only a power constraint as I know I've played more gpu intensive games than I am right now. edit: I have also found some game scenarios where it crash constantly and is not random like I mentioned before (warframe, when I enter a specific map I crash within 30 seconds everytime)
  7. Not sure how to change that in wattman, can't find anything on the radeon driver tool and there doesn't seem to be a seperate tool in AMD's download page. I did the offset using MSI Afterburner and it keeps crashing at both +20% and +50% offset even when power doesn't go over about 95W, fans aren't even spinning at the load it crashes (temps under 60C).
  8. I recently started having issues with my graphics card where the screen would randomly turn black and the monitors would go to sleep since they lost signal from the gpu, but the rest of the system works (I can hear the game and music just fine). A complete power off is the only way to go back to normal, using the reset button doesn't solve the issue and the gpu doesn't send any signal after reboot. I've had this issue while playing games on both windows and linux (open-source kernel drivers). GPU-z logs don't show any abnormal temperature or behavior compared to it's normal use. About a month ago I reseated the gpu and the problem seemed to go away until yesterday where it happened again. The motherboard, cpu, gpu and memory are a year old. (ASUS B350 Strix, MSI RX 580 gaming X, Corsair vengeance LPX) The power supply is about 6 months old (Corsair HX 650) SSD and HHD are about 2 months old Anyone experienced similar issues? Wanted to ask before I start a RMA with the gpu maker.
  9. I could try again but back on the 3203 BIOS it didn't work using DOCP settings with either 1.40V or 1.35V dram voltage.
  10. I'm currently having issues setting up the memory speed to 2993 MHz. The motherboard QVL states that it is compatible to 2993 MHz but I can't make it go any higher than 2666 MHz either using the XMP/DOCP or manual settings. I'm using the latest BIOS drivers from ASUS. When using the default XMP/DOCP profile (or trying to do it manually) the computer simply cycle and then loads a window stating that it failed to post. I installed the sticks in the recommended slots as per the motherboard user manual (A2 and B2). Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix B350-F, BIOS 3401 (also tested on 3203) CPU: Ryzen 1600x (running at 4.0GHz 1.35V) Memory: 2x8Gb Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000MHz (CMK16GX4M2B3000C15 version 5.30) I did notice that the DOCP profile put the dram voltage to 1.40V but it still didn't work at either 1.40V or the 1.35V stated in the QVL / Corsair's website. ASUS QVL: CPU-Z memory tab:
  11. Just realized that and couldn't edit in time... they both look similar as they are limited in space to add more VRM / VRM cooling so I would take the one that's cheaper.
  12. I would say the ASRock AB350M Pro4, cheaper than the Strix (at least it is here in north america), bigger vrm bank / more vrm? (more phases?) / cooling than the non-Pro4 version and it has a usb-C connector which can be handy in the future. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157762 On the other hand the RBG on the strix is pretty nice but I doubt it is worth the extra money.
  13. Thinking of upgrading my system with a RX 580 8gb soon but I don't really know which manufacturer to go for on the AMD side of things. Any recommendation? Anything to look for in particular? Right now I had an eye on the XFX XXX edition or maybe the Saphire Nitro+ but there is a gigabyte and asus one that is reasonably priced to.
  14. I had to use another tool to deal with the mac EFI bootloader. I don't think you need a specific boot partition in that case but you might want to read the manuals before installing). You can check up rEFInd to replace the mac boot loader and allow you to boot your linux partition. Few things you need to know is that rEFInd has a few bugs. It sometimes keep old installations boot info (I did a few distro tests in the past) and removing them isn't easy. It is hard to remove once installed (you need to reinstall your mac os to overwrite it). As per the creator's website, it is still in a "beta version" state. You can still access the default mac loader option by pressing the option key (I think it's called the option key) like you did before. The good thing is that you can mod the appearance as you want, I personally use a minimalistic theme (it exsist in both light and dark color). Perhaps other users were able to dual-boot using some other software / method that are easier to setup.
