  1. Not to mention the rumors of GTX 20XX cards coming out in the April-May timeframe, potentially drastically reducing the price of graphics cards by increasing supply. Granted, take that with a pinch of salt, as nothing is in stone yet.
  2. I'm currently running an i7 960 processor. Bloomfield processors were included in the list of affected processors, but I haven't seen any updates regarding a patch for older generation processors. Has one been anounced anywhere? Also, given the news that the patch will cause more of a slowdown on older processors, will a patch render my 960 unusable? Simply trying to decide if I need to plan on an immediate upgrade, or if I'll be able to wait for next gen. Thanks for your input!
  3. Tried it, to no avail. Might be stuck at 3.8 Ghz with this build, can't exactly RMA an 8 year old, outdated motherboard haha. Oh well, still much better than stock!
  4. Update: I'm an idiot, and didn't realize max multiplier is actually 25. This has allowed me to hit 3.8 GHz, and so far 1.25V seems stable (running torture test a little longer to make sure). Temps are in the low 70s now, much better. Still, to test the max BCLK, I reduced memory speed as low as possible and reduced the multiplier down to 12. Tested BCLK 153 again, and surprise, failed overclock again. Why would I be limited to this clockspeed, when most guides say I should be able to hit 200 without much of an issue?
  5. It looks like the CPU cooler is fairly dusty; how long have you gone without cleaning it? I'm not saying it's a magic fix, but if you clean the fans and heatsinks on your CPU cooler with some compressed air, you may see some improvement in cooling.
  6. Hey everyone, I'm working on an overclock for my i7 960 with an ASUS P6X58D-E motherboard. I should state that this is my first real attempt overclocking, so it is quite possible I'm making a fatal error. I have been able to achieve the following stable overclock: CPU frequency: 3.65 Ghz Multiplier: 24 BCLK: 152 Vcore: 1.35 V Temps during PRIME95: max around 82 C The issue is that whenever I try to increase the base clock above 152, the system immediately shuts down upon leaving the BIOS, wipes the settings in the BIOS, and I'm back where I started. I know the previous owner of the motherboard pushed an overclock too high, and as such, two of the RAM channels no longer function. Is it possible that this could also be limiting the maximum BCLK the motherboard is capable? I've read through multiple overclocking guides specific to my exact platform, and it appears that most people have been able to reach much faster overclocks with the same setup, and I haven't seen any posts about my problems on those guides. Any ideas? Thanks!
  7. Thank you for the input everyone... likely will be holding on to my ancient CPU for a little while longer. As far as the GPU upgrade... we'll see. I have difficulty justifying a $900 GPU upgrade when I know it'll realistically be pointless next year when the next round of GPUs hits shelves...
  8. As far as the overclocking side of things... the previous owner of the motherboard seemed to damage it trying to hotrod his overclock... thing can't hold any overclock now without crashing. EDIT: Also fried two of the RAM sockets... lol As far as the "monitor", I'm actually gaming on a 60 hz 65" 4k TV at the moment. Makes gaming awesome, but UI can be impossibly small in some games lacking scaling...
  9. Pretty much as title says; I'm currently running a weird frankenstein machine as listed below; -i960 processor @ 3.2GHz (stock) -ASUS 96X58D-E motherboard -8 GB DDR-3 RAM -EVGA GTX 1070 FTW 3.0 I'm currently playing most titles in 4k just fine- around 40-50 FPS. I'm curious if I'll really notice any major improvement on performance by upgrading to a modern i7 such as the 7700k, or potentially even a RYZEN platform. I like the idea of many core builds, even though I realize for gaming it's essentially pointless at the moment. I appreciate your guys' insight on this... haven't been able to nail down any comparisons with anything close to a solid gaming benchmark. Thanks!
