  1. Hi Everyone, So I recently bought the Corsair 280X. I'm finally transitioning to a small form factor PC, but ran into an issue almost immediately: My Scythe Mugen is too tall for the 280X. I need a new CPU cooler. I have an i7 4790k and want a downdraft cooler. The Dark Rock TF looks great, but maybe overkill? I'm not going to do any heavy overclocking, maybe just to 4.2-.3 GHz. The Shadow Rock TF2 looks good if the DRTF is overkill. I'm also going for a bit of a Captain Rex from the Clone Wars theme so I'm picking up some blue fans and white LED strips (fans from Corsair), but I'm not sure which ones to go with. I understand that AF are air flow oriented while SP are static pressure, but I'm not sure which would be best for the front of the 280X. Is there enough room for the AFs to move air, or would static pressure fans be the way to go there? I've watched Luke's video, but didn't really get satisfied with the information he said. My memory was that he went over a basic overview of the difference between the two, but didn't really get more granular than that. The reason I'm going with Captain Rex is because of the blue accents on my ASRock H97M Pro4 motherboard (Yes it supports overclocking, I have checked the BIOS), and I have a couple of Lego minifigures of Rex. And the Clone Wars is an awesome show, don't @ me Thanks in advance for any help! Edit: I've also come into possession of a 4690k and might transition over to that as the i7 is a bit overkill for what I do. It'll depend on a lot of factors including benchmarks and gaming performance (after overclocking the i5). Edit 2: I am not requiring a downdraft cooler for this. Looking at Noctua and other offerings, it looks like there are plenty of coolers that will work out just as well if not better.
  2. Oof. Maybe I should rethink the silver and go with orange... ?
  3. Some of the initial pictures of the case and items that came with it. Of course the motherboard too, but that was bought separately.
  4. Hi Everyone, This is a log for my "Silver Arrow". So named because I've been into Formula One Racing recently (Please don't talk to me about the recent Canadian GP ). I've had an i7-4770 lying around with an MSI Motherboard (Z87 I believe), and recently picked up a case for $5 (with some other goodies). The case is an older Lian Li that I plan to paint Silver (gotta figure out which kind to use). The case included an older Corsair HX 750W PSU (80+ Silver), and a 256 Crucial SSD. The GPU is an R7 260x that I've been trying to sell, and is by no means a permanent solution. I'm hoping to save up for a used 1070 Ti or new 1660 Ti (leaning to 1070 Ti). Interesting side-note, Ferrari is actually sponsored by AMD, so having an AMD GPU in an homage to Mercedes-Petronas is kinda sacrilege. So, this is not this machines final form. I'm looking for a K sku i5 or i7, since this is a board that will allow me to overclock I might as well take advantage of it. Since I've only got a stock intel "cooler", I will be in the market for a new one. I am leaning towards the V8 themed cooler master one, because vroom. GPU, as mentioned is going to likely be a 1070 Ti, depending on price. Might think about swapping the PSU, just because I've always heard people caution the use of used PSUs. SSD is staying, all I'm going to add is a large spinning drive for mass storage. Yeah. That's basically it. I'm excited to start on this machine, and hope you all enjoy my journey. Pictures I've already got will be posted right after making this.
  5. I've an idea for scrapyard wars: University/Corporate Surplus builds. In this, the group can only build a system from items that have been sent to surplus by a University or large corporation. I've built a few systems like this, and they can be pretty good. It's amazing what a place like a four year (American) university will sell because of their faculty's perceived need to upgrade at every opportunity.
  6. No. Released in 1998, therefore not this century. Also not the "first Xeon", so thanks for pointing that out.
  7. I am curious as to what everyone here thinks is the most prolific, important, and "best" Intel CPU released in this decade. I would imagine that the Core 2 Duo/Quad are up there. Sandy Bridge? Haswell? Let me know what you all think. And yes, I know this is subjective and I embrace that.
  8. Never mind. Just read some of the ToS... Looks like I will be building another PC
  9. Does it matter that I will be dual booting? One partition for windows and one for MacOS Didn't know about the ToS violation...
  10. Hi all, I have an i7-4770 lying around and I am trying to figure out what to do with it. Basically, I want to build a hackintosh and can't decide if I want to make it with 8th gen intel CPUs or stick with the 4770 I already have. From what I see, selling the 4770 will get me about $150 USD which could cover the cost of an i3-8350 or an i5 8xxx (if I save a little more after selling). Either way I need a new motherboard so that's kind of a moot point to me. But what would you do? Sell the 4770 and get an 8th gen CPU, or just build with the 4770?
  11. So I have a 2010 MacBook Pro 13 that has an Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 (I think), 4GB of RAM, and a 250gb HDD. My question to you, forum goers, is if it will be able to run Civ 3. I know that some of the new Macs don't support older games like this, and I want to know if this is one of them. Anyone know when the cutoff is? Thanks.
  12. Alright, the title doesn't give much away. Basically, I play a lot of World of Warships, I am also in college. We are on break. Unfortunately, the situation at my parents house prevented me from bringing my desktop home with me, so I am playing on a late 2012 MacBook Pro 15 (i7 3rd gen, GT 650M 512mb). The game runs on a wrapper, so from what I understand its a virtual windows machine. My question is would I see improvements in performance by using bootcamp and having windows installed on my Mac? Is it worth it at all? Everything I have seen has pointed me to do so, but I want to ask these forums first. Thanks!
  13. wow okay. Sorry for the spam here. The page didn't update when I sent my replies.
