  1. seems like it really is the port on the tv. i looked around online & for the most part as long as the cable is hdmi 2.0 there shouldn't be any problems. the tv i'm using is a devant 40uhv200. pretty sure i got the right hdmi 2.0 port right. it has 4 hdmi ports: 2 on the side, labeled hdmi mhl & hdmi arc. then two at the back labeled hdmi 2.0 what i'm unsure of now is if this tv can support 4k 60hz in a stable way. maybe the port itself is fine as the screen does show up & can run 4k 60hz. as i mentioned it is visible even with just the mouse movement. but if it displays windows stuff like that maybe it has something to do with the driver? right now i'm pretty much confused if it's something to do with the 1050ti or with the tv itself. i don't really have another 4k tv to test this with... T_T
  2. wow. thanks for all the tips! let's see.. first off sorry for the confusing bits. budget-wise, i'm pretty much flexible here. but of course, i don't really plan on getting what i wouldn't need. if i can stay within $1000 that's really awesome. i can afford up to $2k but i wouldn't really wanna go there if i could avoid it. to paint a more accurate price of what i've listed there, i'm actually getting those here: dynaquestpc.com (one of the cheapest i found here in my country) so lemme list those prices to give you guys a ballpark figure or something. also, i always run out of memory whenever i use my work stuff. yeah... 16gb isn't enough to make things smooth. this is why i really prefer to have 32gb of ram instead of just 16gb. fruity loops & adobe are real memory hogging pigs i tell you. i couldn't face palm enough whenever my pc starts slowing down when i'm working with either of these stuff. price btw is about $1300 here in the ph. if a 1060 can run dual qhd monitors i wouldn't mind going that route too if it means i can go for an i7 as maybe this is much more useful in my case? things i'll mostly do here are stuff like adobe things & some image editing software. as well as some lighter stuff like sai & figma i guess. others would be fruity loops and reaper... other than that... bluestacks, i guess? i'm not all too familiar with ryzen but i'll look up more stuff about this tonight to know more about it. edit: i decided to forego the cooler too as you guys said i really wouldn't need it if i'm not overclocking. so yay! $100ish off is a good thing haha
  3. hello~ i guess what i'm looking for is if there's a cheaper alternative here? like a good ryzen build or something? i'm getting an upgrade for a workstation pc. i listed the parts i'll get here. i'm still deciding on the case but i can put that last based on what parts are good. https://pcpartpicker.com/user/raveninja/saved/YN7jXL i tried to get the reasonably cheaper ones that are available in my country. & note as well, i already have the creative zxr. the others i'm still contemplating on it. i just added it the zxr in case you guys might notice anything wrong or what. i also don't plan on doing overclocking but i'm gonna be sticking 2 qhd monitors here. no heavy gaming other than perhaps, league of legends. it's mostly for productivity & work. not sure about the liquid cooler too... maybe i don't need to get one? i'll try to build it in a small windowed case if possible. i particularly dig the style of fractal & nzxt cases. but as i said earlier, this can come last as i'll work with what's left of my budget. haha as for the storage i have a bunch of hdds lying around that's why i'm only getting a sizeable ssd. i'm also gonna be setting up a nas a little later on so i just need a good ssd for this. maybe add 1 or 2 hdds later on but mostly off load the bigger chunks of files to the nas. thanks in advance guys!
  4. this is about the only one i can find in my country... actual site - http://plugable.com/products/mdp-hdmi/ seller in my country - http://www.lazada.com.ph/plugable-active-mini-displayport-to-hdmi-20-adapter-supportsdisplays-up-to-4k-uhd-3840x216060hz-9915621.html yeah... the markup is crazy... but that's the norm here in our country. it's roughly $100 here lol. the price is a little too steep for me for something i'm not 100% sure will work. maybe i'll look for an active dp to hdmi adapter that i can test first. if not maybe i'll test another hdmi 2 cable. though yeah, i plan on using this for 4k content. i don't really plan on gaming on this pc. it's gonna be more of an htpc. if games were to be played here 1080 is fine really. it's not really intended for gaming that's why i chose this card for it. if it helps, the card i'm using is a palit stormx 1050ti 4gb.
  5. this is what i get when i try to run it at 60hz... i know it can work as it's even noticeable with the cursor movement. wish i could work this out, i'm not really sure anymore if it's the display or i just have to get the settings right.
  6. that makes a lot of sense. then perhaps i can try my luck with an hdmi 2.0 to displayport. this tv doesn't have displayports. just 4 hdmi inputs. two 1.4 ones & two 2.0 ports. quite a waste... marketing tricks of tvs haha... now that you mentioned it, i did try playing a 4k 60hz sample video directly into the tv & it did play like it was corrupted or something. i mean, i can run 60hz fine it's even visibly different with just the mouse. but anything else yeah those black windows things. videos stop working too. only chrome stays the same. sometimes the video play fine. yeah could be the overclocking thing with this tv.
  7. mm... based on your suggestions, then perhaps might it be good to set it up like this then? i'll have an hba card & attach drives there for storage only. then some drives i'll attach to the motherboard would be the 120gb ssd for being the os drive. then have another one for backing up the ssd contents, i mean who knows when it can crash this ssd is nearly 5 years old now haha. is there a difference or added functionality if i use an hba card instead of just the normal sata port on the mobo? i mean i have 8 drives so is it gonna be better if i plug all of the in an hba card or is it the same thing if i just plug in there only the extra drives. i haven't checked around prices online but i'm thinking hba cards with more slots would normally cost more too... then there's the network card perhaps one with 2 (or maybe 4 if i can afford it haha) ethernet ports then another network card that can do wifi would be good? how can i go about with this? so perhaps i'm looking at 3 pci cards at this point... can i fit that into the motherboard... now i'm kinda worried about that too. the motherboard i'm using is an asrock z68 pro3. it'd be nice if i can just stick with freenas. it seems like the simplest solution as well. i'd rather not go too complex. but being able to serve private servers is really nice. i can make stuff like demo stuff accessible to clients. that'd really help me a lot with my work. i'll look into that bit later on. but for now i guess getting it to work as a nas & router is my first step hehe. so far i've been getting lotsa good tips from you guys. man thanks a lot. i wouldn't have gotten this far with just google alone. lol
  8. Hi guys... kinda looking for a little help. i have a devant 40uhv200 tv. it's 4k capable at 60hz. thing is, it's only stable at 4k 30hz. i have it plugged into a palit gtx 1050ti. i can turn it up to 60hz & it does go there but it turns the windows black, freezes videos, the whole screen goes black too (like it's trying to adjust or something). pretty sure that i'm using hdmi 2.0 cable as well. i also get the an error that says something like the display driver stopped and has recovered. i'm using the 382.05 driver from nvidia. i already tried what's mostly suggested doing over at nvidia's forums, like the DDU from guru3d. reinstalling the drivers & downloading it directly from nvidia's site instead of through geforce experience. it also does the same thing when i use the driver from the cd that came wth the 1050ti. i'm using windows 7 on this btw. i'm pretty much really stuck at this point. haha help me please... thanks... T_T
  9. this server thing seems really too complex for me... i guess i'll go with the freenas for now. i'll touch on this topic again once i become a bit more familiar with vms & routers. i'm just pretty much really interested in tweaking QoS settings hehe
  10. let's see, so proxmox is like the server os, then perhaps i'd have a vm inside it for the router & then zfs will be a software for the storage. how does it's system resources work? is that configurable with a fixed amount or are they like sharing the resources & just using what they need? as for the disadvantage of the whole network shutting down, i don't mind it since it's not gonna handle anything very critical. & i'll most likely have it turned off when i'm not home unless i'd need the files in it. though i'm thinking, if it's gonna function as a storage, there's this thing like with let's say pdf files, if i were to access it with a pc that doesn't have a pdf reader, can i have something like that installed on the server so certain files can be accessed even without the software required to read those files be available on the device that accesses these files?
  11. mm... wait what you guys said mostly flew over my head. from my understanding, i'm gonna have a server os setup & run a vm in it? kinda like the os or software for the router runs separately from the storage server? is that like 2 sandboxes inside one os? sorry if i didn't quite get that right. i'm new to this server stuff. halp me understand... T_T
  12. Hi & good day everyone! Just looking for suggestions actually. I've upgraded my pc so i'm left with old hardware & I plan to use it as a home server. Thought it might be nice but to be honest I have no idea what to use it for lol. So there's my question, is it possible to turn it into both a router & a nas at the same time? Might be a pretty noob question but as you can tell I'm not really an expert here. haha. If I can turn it into a router, what can it be good for? I mean asides from the obvious use of a normal router. I've been looking around online & seen it do some sort of added security stuff. as well as QoS (this is where I'm interested in). Though if I'll turn it into a NAS will it still work as a router? I wouldn't mind getting a capable network card for it if that were the case. devices that'd connect to it would be a pc, ps4, laptops, & smartphones. most llikely 4 lan devices at most. Here's the hardware I have for it: - i3 3210 - some crucial 8gb ddr3 ram - asrock z68 pro3 (http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z68 Pro3/index.asp) - 8 wd green hdds (yeah i have too much) i'll just take 4 or 5 of these actually unless there's some way for me to maximize these hdds - ocz 120gb ssd - this is old but it works fine though i'm a little concerned about drive failure so perhaps making it do regular backups to a dedicated green drive can be nice - corsair 650vs psu also gonna get a case for this later on. might consider a lower psu (like 350-400w maybe) if i have spare budget for it since, well, as you can see with the hardware... yeah 650w is too much lol. i know my hdds aren't red & i'm actually curious about any possible issues if this is a server i'll be turning off everytime i leave the house. maybe i can leave it on at times too for, perhaps, i can use my smartphone & laptop to access its files remotely? that can be heck of a lot useful for me too. lastly, if i were to put a gpu here as well, what use can it have? hahaha thought i might throw this in as well since i'll upgrade my gpu later on this year as well. its just a palit gtx 750 so it's not really a hardcore gpu either. but i'm curious as to what it can do for this kind of setup. Anyway, thanks in advance. P.S. edit after considering my understanding & the need i'm trying to create for myself, here's what i want it to do: - function as a nas (is there a way for me to use 8 hdds in here? like perhaps a way to take advantage of a pci express lane to put in some hdds there?) - run as a router (i'd like to take advantage of a pci slot for a suitable network card) - as a nas, perhaps if it's possible, i'd like for it to have certain programs that can open some files in here (i.e. pdf, word documents, excel sheets, media files, those sorta basic stuff), an example use case scenario would be, let's say, a pc that doesn't have a pdf reader. if it were to access a pdf file in this server, i'd like this server to have a pdf reader ready for it just in case. i guess a more common scenario would be with with microsoft office files. not everyone uses them. (i even use openoffice--bec it's free lol) i've been eyeing freenas for a while but, perhaps i won't be able to run a router os/software along with that?
