  1. Okay so the issue is that I had a power surge that fried my motherboard and possibly my 5820k with it. The storm actually screwed up a lot of devices in my area. Anyways I'm trying to figure out how to get back up and running. I've got a 1080ti and a full water-cooling setup so I don't like the idea of buying a cheap CPU to get me through. So I've been looking at ryzen for value options. Honestly, I want the 2700 with an ASROCK Taichi board. Unfortunately, that's expensive. I can't bring myself to buy it without looking for more options. I'd like to stick with the Taichi board unless someone has complaints since I can just upgrade CPUs down the line. What CPU do you guys think I should get? Should I stick to Intel? Or try Ryzen?
  2. I just found it odd that the cable was the point of failure. Like what are the odds? There are so many cables around it, including other similar audio cables and just the one cable was the issue.
  3. To be fair, the moto mods are kind of gimmicky. I have a moto z and I just have the battery attachment for when I go on long trips or forget to charge my phone. But I got the phone because it's a great phone without the mods. There's not really much else special beyond the mods but I kind of like that. Fast charging, full day battery, good software, and basically an indestructible screen.
  4. I also feel obligated to invite you to join the vim master race. Tmux + Vim makes for a wonderful experience, and it's entirely terminal based so you can use it over ssh.
  5. I would recommend the moto z play. Motorolla has a great software experience, it's basically stock android with minor changes. Most importantly there's not bloatware. You probably won't find many android phones with a lower resolution than 1080p, that's kind of an IPhone thing to have low res. Either way there's a lot more to a screen than resolution and I like the moto z line.
  6. Think about it this way, your laptop was probably using some Intel integrated hd graphics driver, which is great for that laptop. Unfortunately you just moved all the data and drivers from that system to a whole new set of hardware. That can create some issues initially. After some driver maintenance it should be good to go. There's also the possibility that the default driver for your gpu doesn't support 21:9 resolutions and you need to grab the driver from their site for that.
  7. Probably a driver thing. My guess is that whatever driver your laptop was using is conflicting with your computer's graphics driver.
  8. What OS are you using? If you're using windows then you'll need to make sure it's added to your path.
  9. This isn't terribly long or complicated, just rather strange. I'm sure one of you will have a reasonable explanation as to why things happened the way they did but it's still astounding! So a little bit of backstory. I have a cheap set of Logitech speakers + sub. I also have a cheap amp. The amp came with a pack when I was gifted a guitar last Christmas. I decided that I should add the amp to my speaker setup to boost my volume/audio quality. Other than a little bit of trouble getting windows to actually use the amp in addition to the speakers I was up and running. For a few days everything was great! And then one night I heard some faint music and I figured I just left my spotify on with low volume. I checked and it wasn't playing. After that I just went to bed and didn't worry about it. The next day, things are still pretty good. Unfortunately, I eventually notice the faint music again, at this point now that I've noticed it twice, I notice it all the time. My explanation this time was that maybe my neighbors had left some music on and I was just hearing it through the walls. Again another night passes. Now when I go to my computer I almost immediately notice the faint music. It's much louder now, still not sure why it got louder. It's loud enough that I start to make out what's actually playing. My amp is playing a local radio station (I live in Houghton, MI, which is basically the middle of lake superior so we have like 3 radio stations). So I started troubleshooting. The fact that it was only coming from my amp and not my speakers at all told me it wasn't an issue with my computer. So I start googling. Apparently amps picking up radio stations is a normal thing that happens if the amp is cheaply made without enough shielding. It's also much more common for guitars to pick up radio stations while they're being played. There was only one thing that didn't add up, the radio station was only picked up when it was connected to my computer. Long story short, the only thing left was the aux cable. So I apparently acquired an aux cable that's so terrible it picks up radio stations. It's the most standard looking aux cable you could imagine. Roughly 5ft with two green 3.5mm ends. I've replaced it and everything works wonderfully again. I also now own a cable that acts as a radio whenever I feel like messing with people. Sorry if this story wasn't exciting enough for ya. I thought it was pretty neat. Let me know if you've had similar experiences or if science can explain this better than just saying the cable had poor shielding.
  10. Is there any way for us to make a suggestion that someone at Linus Media Group will see? I actually think this is a real possibility.
  11. Anyone else think we should get an LTT Collaboration with these guys? This video was painful to watch. They probably need a server for storage and threadripper could actually be put to use here! I don't think they would have any problems finding sponsors for all the hardware. They already have the hard drives.
  12. In general if it's between a 1200 and 1400, the 1400 is going to be much better for everything you said it would be used for. You don't need a 1600 or better to stream but it probably won't be the greatest streaming experience without it.
  13. In general streaming requires powerful hardware. More cores/threads is always a good thing. So a 1400 should be fine for the games but I wouldn't plan to stream with it.
  14. We're going to need some more details on what's going on. Are you sure you're using the correct input on your TV? Is the gamecube shutting off? Do you have audio?
