  • Biography
I have been in the industry since the early 1980's.
I have run everything from a 1979 Vic 20 to massive 2017 Dell Xeon servers.
I have been on beta teams from windows 98 - windows 10 (Microsoft beta ID 800286) Solaris beta's as well as different game beta's for decades now.
Been a pc tech, been a mac tech, been a Linux tech, been a ICT manager, been a CIO.

I have been in the IT industry long enough to know that there are many many MANY things I don't know. Any time you meet someone that thinks they "know it all" about ICT, you have met someone that does not know how broad ICT actually is.

Or you could say - I ran into a computer once.

  1. Don't worry guys. I found it. It was right next to the cocaine plie!
  2. Hi Guys. I thought I saw a LTT vid where they were going through how to install windows 11 without having to worry about TPM or secureboot by moving the windows main image file into a windows 10 dvd image. Was I smoking crack at the time because I can't find it anymore - and my crack pipe has gone missing too???
  3. Hi guys and dolls! I have finally purchased a monitor I drooled over all the way back in 2004. a RedRover SDM-240! https://www.berezin.com/3d/3d_monitor.htm#:~:text=True%203Di%20Monitor-%20Only%20production%20two%20input%20polarized,Matrox%20Dual%20Head2Go%20%28available%20at%20most%20electronic%20retailers%29. Does anyone have any experience with these - ie how to use them, how to connect them up or anything like that? I know that they use 2 DVI-D inputs but apart from that, I know very little about them.
  4. Yeah, there is a cabling job that needs to be done to the bracket, cutting and re-soldering wires into the connector but its not a big jb.
  5. Hi There I have a Dell 2850 rack server in my study rack with 6 Delta AFB0612EHE (standard dell) fans inside. They are 60mmX60mmX38mm accordng to this datasheet I have found https://www.delta-fan.com/Download/Spec/AFB0612EHE-AF00.pdf They quote a maximum dB rating of both 60 and 64 dB. Using a dB calculator and the worst case number, that would give me a total maximum dB rating of 71.77dB. http://www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-spl30.htm The average vaccume cleaner runs at 70dB so it explains why they are loud. The Delta's run at 61.7 CFM (1.73m³/min) with a static pressure of 1.496 in H2O (372.6 Pa) at 11000 RPM. I'm thinking of replacing all 6 with Noctua NF-A6x25's https://noctua.at/en/products/fan/nf-a6x25-pwm/specification These are the questions I don't yet know the answers to. #1, Have I read the datasheets correctly? #2, The Noctua's are thinner, at 60mmx60mmx25mm, but they seem to fit into the bracket anyway. Would this thinner size cause any issues like air leakage? #3 They seem to have a noise level of 19.3 dB giving me a total noise level of 27.07db down from 71.77db. Does that seem right? #4 The static pressure seems better at 2.18 mm H₂O vs 1.496 of the Delta's. #5 the airflow 29,2 m³/h seems worse to me as unless I am doing something wrong, that would seem to calculate out to 17.2 CFM VS the delta's 61.7 CFM? #6 the rotational speed seems much lower at 3000 RPM vs 11000 RPM. Now I can make adjustments in the Dell Openmanage software to set the fan warning levels? #7 Is this just the wrong fan to replace my current fans with and is there a better choice than the Noctua.
  6. Hi guys. I am having an issue and I am hoping that someone in here can help. I have an old Sun Ultra 20 and I don't want to retire it. I just can't seem to detect the sata hard drives in it under Oracle linux. Windows finds them and Solaris finds them but I am having no luck with Oracle Linux. I have read something about turning on AHCI mode but I can't find any mention of it in my bios and I don;t know if it is a red herring or not. Does anyone have any ideas of things I can try?
  7. Hi There I have just walked into a free Ryzen 2700 processor. I am currently running a Ryzen 1700 processor. Neither are the X versions. My gut feeling is that I should swap them over as the 2700 is marginally better than the 1700, but I thought I should check first. Is there any reason to keep the 1700 and not replace it with the 2700?
  8. I absolutely loved elementary. My only issue with it was that it doesn't support my older pc's - which is my reason for using Linux in the first place - to make old hardware like new again.
  9. I didn't think they did a hp-ux for the x86 processor line, only the risc, and ia64 platforms. If there is one, I'll definitely give it a go!
  10. I gave Debian another go - this time from the net install cd. It worked flawlessly and I now have all I wanted, google chrome, steam ect running on it perfectly! It's not slow on Debian either.
  11. It runs Solaris 10 fine, but Solaris 11 is just way too slow on it with the gui installed for a workstaton. Solaris 10 has issues with certificates, https and some other things making browsing on it troublesome out of the box and un have stopped supplying the companion cd as well. If Solaris was being truly maintained it would be a different thing but it just does not have the support behind it anymore.
  12. Downloading all 3 to try tonight. Hopefully one will just work out of the box...
  13. I did give Debian a go but I'll download it again just to give it another try. Maybe there was something wrong with the download...
  14. Hi Guys.I have spent about 2 weeks looking for a Linux that I can just burn to a DVD and then install on my other machine. This one I am having even worse issues. I can run the live installer but once the OS is installed, x just drops letters out randomly. This machine is an HP Workstation X4000 running a 36 GB SCSI drive, LSI controller, 1GB of Ram, a xeon 2.4 and a Quadro 4 750 GXL video card. Can anyone point me to a modern Linux I can run on it without having issues and without running like a dog? https://www.cnet.com/products/hp-workstation-x4000-xeon-2-4-ghz-monitor-none-series/
  15. Hi Guys. I have spent about 2 weeks looking for a Linux that I can just burn to a DVD and then install on my machine. Every time I have tried I have had issues getting to the desktop. My machine is a Sun Ultra20 with 2 500 GB sata drives, an AMD Opteron 148 processor 2GB of RAM and an Nvidia 1060 video card. https://www.cnet.com/products/sun-ultra-20-opteron-148-2-2-ghz-monitor-none-series/ Anyone have a modern Linux I can run on it without having issues and without running like a dog?
