  1. I think you are right. I'll probably start with a nicer PSU and then get the gtx 1080 next time I see a good deal on it.
  2. So I am stuck on where to invest money into my desktop pc, hopefully you can give me your two cents. My current build: i7 4770K overclocked to 4.1ghz Asus z97-PRO Gamer mobo 32GB (4x8GB) of ddr3 ram at 1333mHz -- though 2 sticks of the ram are 2134mHz and I know mismatched ram is no bueno MSI GTX 770 2GB and Reference GTX 770 2GB in SLI Boot drive is an intel 730 480GB ssd PSU SolyTech SL-8600EPS 600 Watt AOC 2267w 22" FHD x3 <-- yep 3 of them I primarily do content creation and spend about 90% of my time in adobe cc. Roughly 50% Premiere/After effects and 50% Lightroom/Photoshop. I am working with a lot more 4k and 6k content these days so I am looking to give an update to my system without having to rebuild from scratch on the LGA 2011 platform. So that said I believe my most outdated components are the 770s but I also wonder if I bought a gtx 1080 if I would also need to get a better PSU. Another thought that I don't have an answer to is how much does my relatively slow mismatched ram hurt me? I do plan on upgrading to a pair of ultrawide displays eventually but I am waiting on their prices to come down, or one of my monitors to die. This really isn't a budget oriented post more of a maximize the dollar post but lets just say I am comfortable spending enough to get a gtx 1080 should that be the best move.
  3. Ok I'll admit that I am pretty novice when it comes to understanding the different mediums for storage and their respective benefits and limitations but after watching the video I think what I see as a potential (albeit, limited) use case is my own: I have a 480gb ssd as my boot drive (C:) and put the essentials on it that like to be in the same place as the C drive like the adobe cc suite and cinema4d. I have a 120gb ssd as my scratch drive for premiere and after effects (or any other program that likes to use temporary project files and is speed dependent) I have a 6TB HDD for my media and active projects (so basically my lightroom catalog and whatever raw footage I need for my various film projects going on at the time) I have several other drives that serve various uses but they don't seem relevant so I'll ignore them for this post. Am I wrong in assuming that the Intel Optane would be perfect for speeding up the access to whatever photo or video file living on the 6TB HDD? Assuming hardware compatibility this seems like a very cost effective alternative. I don't have the extra ram to make a ram disk and I frequently work with projects that involve 2-5TB of content that I need access too at any given time so an ssd (or even raid array) is simply not a cost efficient solution. Right now reading all of my media off the HDD is pretty slow but it is the only viable option that I see at the moment unless someone wants to donate lots of monies to my rig. Any thoughts? Am I completely wrong about this?
