  1. Hello, Does anyone know where I can find the tools and resources used to create/design a PC like LTT's Desk PC? (I'm not building a desk pc myself, but this thread can be a resource for all future makers/designers. I'm interesting in making a 'wall pc' from scratch myself) -Design software, schematics and dimensions (resources/communities)?: (problem with LTT video descriptions is they include product parts list, but not links to design schematics or recommended communities/resources) Recommended software? (available free software?) Mobo screw-layout/dimensions/mounting (layout) PCIe bracket dimensions, custom mounting solutions ATX Power Supply dimensions and mounting Etc.. -Recommended pre-fab Hardware or manufactures?: Things that are best bought and not made (not counting core components, mainly securing hardware/brackets/cabling/etc for custom mounting) -Recommended outsourced custom part printers/makers/materials/companies? and (while this will change over time) recommended home 3d printing machines and materials. (i'm not planning on getting a 3d printer myself, but others may) -Anything else that will help Thank you. If this is already posted on the forum somewhere, please send a link, search was not helpful
  2. Bluetooth Headset buying guide/showdown/review/top-picks/best-for-cheep-x$/etc these are for general-use/work/making-actual-phone-calls (not for gaming, but could be a bonus feature)
  3. NAS/SAN Software Roundup. When should you use what software for your particular environment? (Add links to supporting guides and information, i don't expect a single or several videos to be all-informative on this topic) ie: what should you use FreeNAS for? (what's it good at/for?), what's it NOT good at? (repeat for Unraid, ReadyNAS, etc....) what general hardware would you use/need? Additionally: (could make a short series about this if going somewhat in-depth) #TQ when would you use basic file sharing? (share a folder on your HDD/machine) when would you use a NAS? (general file sharing) When would you use NFS? (Different than standard /directory fire sharing somehow, WinServer ability) When would you use a SAN? and how do you implement one? (usually used for high bandwidth iSCSI traffic/Enterprise) and now I've gone down a rabbit-hole... i think you get the main idea.
  4. Does LTT/someone have a roundup of SAN implimentations? (ie: if this, then that) There are a large number of NAS/SAN implimentations and software to run it on. Can someone let me(/the community) know what features/software are good for what environment? .... there's Unraid, FreeNAS, ReadyNAS, and many more... What would be the use case for each? When shouldn't you use a particular NAS vendor/software? And is there a tutorial/link we can use to learn how to setup/configure the software? With so many options, it's hard to determine what works best with what implimentation. >I'm looking to setup a local SAN to support my ESXi hosts, but finding it hard to determine what i should run on the SAN boxes. and i'm sure most folks are just as confused about NAS implementations as well (less enterprise, more consumer-network level) 2ESXi hosts, 2SAN hosts, 10G local SAN connections. iSCSI conections planned, multipath. not sure if multiple ESXi hosts can access the same target simultaneously, had it working briefly on a test machine, before i found NFS was all i needed for reference files. but i want a proper redundant HA/FT setup for the VM's. Thanks for the help. the internet is a mess, and after an hour or two of googling/forum searching, i couldn't find any specific info on this. Surprised LTT doesn't have a SAN video. they have a NAS one or two about their video/file storage. but they don't do much virtualization...
  5. I'm looking to make a SAN with 10G networking between 3 or 4 machines, but the cost of a 10G SFP switch/router isn't particularly cheap. (but the adapters are...) I was wondering what the viability of daisy-chaining the machines would be? Config: Hosts: 2ESXi, 1or2 zfs/freeNAS/Unraid (haven't decided yet) SAN machines) Dual 10G Network adapters per machine Purpose: Local SAN Only. Planned config; static IP's on each port, cabled as follows in a circle/ring for redundancy. #1->#2 #2->#3 #3->#4 #4->#1 Would i need a /30 between each host? who/how is the routing/path-cost handled? automatic switching loop prevention? I did a google/forums search initially, but it wasn't very forthcoming. Thank you. (proper 10G LAN/SAN in future upgrades)
  6. Yes, the Radiator fan is spinning away. It's not over-heating, and one of the tubes is warm, so i'd assume the pump is still running inside the block. Though this does make me think.. what is the longevity of a closed-loop water-cooling unit? (Corsair 120MM Radiator, lord knows what the model is/was anymore) I'll try the Thermal paste re-application.
  7. I didn't have more than 1 DP cable (and that was a converter to DVI) (had a bunch of old DVI/D-Sub only monitors) [1070 i have has 3DP,1DVI,1HDMI ports] BUT i just upgraded my monitors a few days ago and they all run DP now so.. that's fixed/rectified.
  8. forced update to latest nvidia drivers, now the 660 is not working "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)" >_> forgot to log what driver /was/ working ...
  9. Wondering if anyone else has encountered this weird set of conditions on an older system and if there's a simple fix for it: 1a. COLD booting the system stops at the Motherboard Logo (I think this is during POST?) 1b. WARM booting (reset after Cold boot, boots normally to the OS/windows) 1c. HOT booting/Rebooting the machine throws a "CPU Over-temp" error, which can be ignored with another press of the reset button, then boots normally. -this is just plain weird behavior in my opinion. why is it doing this? and how can i fix it?(if possible) 2. Some games now hitch/freeze/stutter randomly on Win 10. I had no problems when i was running Windows 7, but that's reaching EOL, (and 'cuz for some reason Win7 decided to erase all my years of customization settings, i just clean installed windows 10. (so weird.. all programs were still installed, just windows reset itself...)) -i'm assuming the hardware is just old and Win 10 may/will never be optimized for older hardware. 3. There's some weirdness with windows itself where if i click an icon/contextual menu on the task-bar (and probably everywhere, i just use that more) where it registers the click, leaves the context menu open for a full second-second-and-a-half /Then/ opens the application.. -like wth?! win7 never did this. +have installed latest drivers --------------------- Specs: OS: Win 10.0.18362 MB: ASUS Maximus VI Hero [BIOS v1603, latest available on ASUS website] CPU: Intel i7-4770 Mem: 4x8GB Corsair DDR3 GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 (running 3 monitors), and a Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 (running a 4th monitor) OS is on a SATA Intel 120GB SSD (as old as the system i think), Games installed on a 1TB intel 750 PCIe SSD Corsair AIO Watercooled CPU block. With the exception of the 1070, I bought the mainboard components at LEAST 5 years ago (CPU/Mem/Mobo) - been run'n like a champ 'till Win 10/Win 7-glitches Anyone know what's going on or if there's something i can do? Thank you.
  10. I did not know they were shell-launched... i just assumed an exe was meant to be run as is... good to know.. i will try this more often
  11. I have ESXi on some other servers, this one happens to be doubleing as a HyperV server with one VM to manage the ESXi servers (i'll eventually want to get better ESXi hosts.. the one's i have are maxed at 24GB Hardware ram....but that's for another day) FreeNAS was an option i considered after i had installed windows server on it... >< .. but i want more experience with the windows envirnment, so.. i stuck with it for now
  12. [[short version=Expansion]] I have 12 Front bays and only 6 MOBO SATA ports, i run them in sets of 4 (though i'll likely leave one bay each empty for a while), 1 set of 4 is off the mobo anyway, leaving only 2 SATA ports unconnected.. that i'll probably attach an SSD too for caching files in the future Wizard linked the LSI controller management software, it doesn't actually do any of the work. And i'm fairly familiar with windows drive management snap-in. didn't see any CLI files in the program files. (just dll's) the download link doesn't seem to go to a page to DL "StorCLI" .. just stuff specific to a device ... :confusedlook: .... >some digging later> found it on broadcom's site with a sitewide search... ...and the 9211 is not a supported controller.. poop.. installer did pretty much the same thing as the other utility i tried, opend cmd promt, then immediately closed it again.. oh well.. Thanks.
  13. I understand the concern for the HBA not having a battery, But it's for home use on a system with an UPS with a runtime of ~20min, and i'm pretty much the only user, system auto-shuts down when battery low anyway. I definately would get a battery-capable adapter in a corprate production environment. I would ask though why/how a software RAID (I'm only using raid 1/mirror with 2-3 disks) is better than a hardware raid? personally, i don't trust windows to recover a raid if the origin OS install should ever fail and need to be replaced/reinstalled. Thanks.
  14. [[Skip to >>> ]] tried that. no software. https://www.broadcom.com/support/download-search/?pg=Storage+Adapters,+Controllers,+and+ICs&pf=Storage+Adapters,+Controllers,+and+ICs&pn=SAS+9210-8i+Host+Bus+Adapter&po=&pa=Software&dk= the one thing i did find ran some cmd windows and instantly closed them. >>> huh.. NOWHERE does it say that the HBA's are supported by megaraid software, EXCEPT in the megaraid installer..... also.. megaraid software download is not associated with any device on thier webpage .. i had to specifically search for it on the site... soo wierd... (as opposed to the 'download search' thing) That works Thanks! EDIT: well would ya look at that... it's already running the latest firmware
  15. Is there a way i can manage my LSI HBA RAID Controller from within windows server 2016 environment? (rebooting into BIOS is tedious and seems quite unnecessary to me just to add a hot spare or new drive configs (not removing existing arrays)....) I've looked up some stuff from broadcom (new parent company of LSI), but none of the programs or files i downloaded and tried to install appeared to do anything. i was thinking like someway to locally ssh or telnet in, but i have no idea how to flash a card from within windows without a working tool from a manufacturer. LSI SAS 9211-8i | https://www.starline.de/fileadmin/images/produkte/lsi/LSISAS92118i__ENG_.pdf | PS. I've also considered upgrading the firmware on the device, but i'm really skeptical of doing so since none of the current support info webpages actually list this exact card as compatable. (closest listed page on broadcom's site is the 9210 | > also.. how do i download a copy of the current firmware off the card? (since if the new version for w/e reason doesn't work, it's not available online anywhere i can find) | >> I have replied to this thread to find out how their upgrade went.. https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/779052-lsi-9211-8i-p20-firmware/ other thoughts: upgrading bios: data loss? (wouldn't see why it would, but can see it possible) Thanks.
