  1. He did try it in another machine and it gave him no errors when formatting, however when he put it back in his machine it gave him the same io error. His other SSD is a 500GB Crucial MX500 and he has a Crucial 250gb NVMe SSD. Does anyone know if there is a bios setting that could be affecting this?
  2. He has 1 other sata ssd. I will have him try it in another machine tonight.
  3. Good evening, I have a friend who recently purchased a 1TB Samsung 870 evo and is having issues formatting. He went into disk management and initialized the disk as MBR (after getting an io device error 3 times it finally worked) and tried formatting and it gives him an error of "Could not format due to an io device error". He swapped his SATA data cable for a new one and tried a different SATA port. I instructed him through command prompt to diskpart and listed the disks, it shows up, but his other 2 drives are GPT, not MBR, so, thinking that may be causing the issue, I had him tried to convert it to GPT, but got the same error, "Could not perform the operation due to io error". Is there a BIOS setting blocking these actions? What else can be done? He's contacted me because I'm the friend group's IT guy, but this one has me stumped, especially because I cannot physically get to the machine. I know for sure it's a Gigabyte Aorus Elite/Master board, pretty sure it's x470. Thank you, Soup
  4. Hey guys, I'm experiencing an issue with the bios for my MSI X370 Gaming Pro. Version 4.0 is what the board came with, it overcloked okay, but I didn't have my back plate from Cryorig so I didn't feel safe pushing the OC too hard. I actually made a back plate from polycarbonate and steel, because i got sick of waiting, which works just fine. I finally got m flash to recognize the new bios file, upon installing the newest version, 4.3, I oc'd my R5 1600 to 3.95ghz at 1.3875v with actual voltage near 1.415v. However, Ryzen Master, CPU-Z, and Core Temp report 1.55ghz, not 3.95. So I tried to go default at 3.2, still 1.55ghz. The memory overclocks flawlessly. I tried bios version 4.2 and 4.1 with the same results. Finally when I got back to stock bios from March, I could overclock again. But now I have to push 1.4125v to get 3.9ghz. Any ideas?
  5. If you can get a 980 and the performance is similar to a 1060 6gb that costs that much more, just get the 980. Verify it works fine before taking it home.
  6. If you're dead set on Intel, don't buy last generation (Skylake) unless it's a super deal. If you have the budget, get the 7700k. Asus makes overclocking stupid easy with their oc tuner. I won't straight out say more cores are better, generally the more cores you have, the more heat they put out to achieve higher clock speeds (6 at 4.5ghz would be hotter than 4 at 5.0ghz). In a lot of today's titles 4 cores is plenty. Anything using older game engines will only use 1 or 2 cores.
  7. What CPU do you have? What motherboard is it plugged into? What game are you experiencing problems with particularly?
  8. Processors have little to do with compatibility with graphics cards. It all depends on whether the motherboard has the right slot to accept the card.
  9. EK's new budget kit is all aluminum. Definitely don't mix metals if possible. What EK kits are you taking about in particular?
  10. Yes, I did, not that noobish. Lol. NTFS or fat32 for the format type?
  11. Did you get your bios updated? I'm having an issue where I can view the flash drive, but can't view or select the bios file. MSI x370 Gaming Pro. Using a usb 2.0 port on the back of the board.
  12. When I go Ryzen, I'm going to carry over my Cryorig h7. Anybody know how this cooler performs?
  13. I love GNSteve, I'll have to go look for those. Cannon Lake and Coffee Lake are going to be strange generations just like Skylake and Kaby Lake. Also, you're right, it will likely use a totally different chipset and socket.
  14. He said 188f max, then reistalled it and is at 210f. 212f is 100c. I may have been wrong about the idle, but 100c is not normal.
  15. It sounds like he is idling at 86c, which is not normal.
