  1. Best buy never seems to have anything in stock or in the showroom. Is there some other place to check out?
  2. That's actually a great idea. Two things:1 I don't know how much longer the macbook will hold up. 2 This is the last laptop my family will help me pay for (educational) so I think I could go a bit over budget. That said, I will think about your recommendation... I don't like chromebooks but if they're cheap and good for drawing then I guess they could be a solution...
  3. Hello everyone! I am a second year Computer Science student and I have been trying to decide which laptop to get for the past month. I initially wanted to get the surface pro laptop but it is so expensive and I have concerns about the keyboard as a programmer. My brothers both got surface pro's and they used them well. I would also get one if I knew that the keyboard won't annoy me after a while. I really loved the new Surface studio laptop and the Surface laptop 3 (with the detachable screen) are also very appealing to me. I am just shocked how much all laptops cost! I am currently using a restored Macbook pro 2014 13 inch with a HUION drawing pad to do my work. I love the macbook but I just need something to draw on lecture slides and do my math homework with! Does anyone have suggestions on what to get? Do I just have to spend a lot of money to get a good machine? (I have a gaming computer at home so I really just need a work machine that can do coding and a bit of multitasking)
  4. Just checked, no its standard set to the standard American layout and is fully functional.
  5. Yessir, those were actually the first methods I tried, but they unfortunately did not work out.
  6. Hi, is there a certain section you specifically had in mind? I don't really feel comfortable to post all my information. As an update, I actually found an old thinkpad T61 and installed linux mint onto it. But this also warrants the same "authentication required" infinite loop. This makes me guess it is my network?
  7. Hi, another update. I was not able to amend my wifi connection. I tried, as the website suggested and also through other instruction websites, to "fix" the wifi problem with my Broadcom chipset. I think these guides are there to install wifi drivers in order for the computer to recognize the chip within the macbook or enable the macbook to use the chip. This, as I found out, is not my problem. The software recognizes and lets me use my wifi chip, but the the issue occurs when I try to connect to my network. I will try and connect it to a different network, but again when I access my network with Osx it runs fine. If anyone has any suggestion on how to proceed please don't hesitate to reach out, I'm almost at the end of my wits.
  8. do you think I have a chance getting a MacBook Pro with a retina display for around $300?
  9. Budget (including currency): I want to spend no more than $200 CAD Country: Canada (The Macbook has a German layout) Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Youtube, Word, Presentations, movie machine (using hdmi), etc. (just light work) Other details Hi everyone! I just wanted to see if anyone on this forum can give me useful advice about what to do now. History: My Macbook Pro 2014 13-inch was water damaged a few years ago. Recently I tested it and I was told the logic board was fried. I got a logic board from a MacBook pro for parts for $230. The Macbook will now turn on but unfortunately the screen is messed up. I never saw any damage on it (even after the water damage because I managed to turn it on again before the logic board fried) before I replaced the logic board. The trackpad is also glitchy. Lastly, the machine does not allow me to boot up properly. It has the question-mark folder on display. What to do now? I was told I could do a couple of things. 1) Take the cable for the trackpad from the for parts MacBook I bought and fix the trackpad of my Macbook (will probably do this). Then find a screen online or from someone I know to replace my MacBook screen. (I was told the retina display of all Macbooks from 2013-2015 should work fine). 2) Find another Macbook pro from around that time-period and just insert the storage. Then, sell my macbook for parts. The logic board is ok and the battery was just recently replaced before the water damage... Additionally, I don't know how to get the Macbook to boot at the moment. It seems I need to reformat the drive to reinstall MacOS but then I lose all my data. What can I do?
  10. Yes, Luckily the Macbook itself still has an ethernet connection, so that I was able to update the machine but still to no avail
  11. Thanks for the info, yea unfortunately i did not do my research before purchasing it. I hope I can somehow fix it, if not I need to get a different compact windows machine.
  12. Update: Thanks for the responses, I have not been able to resolve the issues. What I have tried: (Note: All I am doing is trial and error since I don't have any previous knowledge about this topic.) After extensive search I learned that macbooks generally have many driver issues especially with the wifi card. To be precise, I have a Broadcom BCM4331 Chip and according to this help page : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx there are a couple of driver reinstallations I could try which unfortunately did not resolve my issue. I also tried various distributions of linux. I did Ubuntu 20.04, 21.04; latest version of elementary Os, Linux mint Xfce, Pop-os, Xubuntu and Manjaro. Nothing to my avail but I think this information could help narrow down the problem. Because all distributions were able at least to scan and find my network, but connecting was the issue. I also want to mention that one week prior I replaced my hard drive with a new ssd. When the hardrive was inserted I could use the wifi with no issues, but now with the ssd they are present.( Not sure if its just a correlation)
  13. Well I was told that plain Ubuntu would be a great introduction to Linux, so I chose that. Are there other distributions you recommend? My computer is very old has 16 gb ddr3 of ram and a new ssd and I would like to have the most fluid experience.
  14. Hi, I am completely new to Linux. I recently got an old 2011 macbook pro to try Linux with. I decided to dual boot OSx high sierra and Ubuntu 20.10. After i have installed the version, I could not connect to the internet. It allows me to select and insert my wifi password, but after a short processing time, it returns me an 'authentication required' pop up where I need to fill in my password again. I have tried to reboot my device, reinstall linux and reinstall two different wifi drivers without success. The wifi works fine when I run OSx so I don't think it is the wifi chip in the laptop. As I mentioned previously, I am a newbie at linux and all my online troubleshooting searches in google yielded for me not understandable jargon. I am eager to learn and would appreciate any attempt or suggestion the community could give. I just ask that the solutions you may devise to be simple enough that with a couple minutes spent searching on the internet, I can decipher what jargon you may throw at me;) Thanks for your time
