  1. Maybe I’m just lucky but, even as a beginner I have had a very easy time playing every game I’ve tried so far in my steam library using Proton. The only game I’ve had trouble with was that one I downloaded for free that I mentioned.
  2. Ah I didn’t even know that was a thing… facepalm. I will try that. Do you have any recommendations on where to learn stuff like that about the differences between those GUI based functions compared to Windows? I know the basics of the terminal commands (how to navigate through the directories, open them, create basic text files, etc.) and that stuff generally makes sense to me thanks to a free linux class I took through cisco a while back but I struggle hardcore trying to do things in the GUI that aren’t ultra basic functions.
  3. Hey yall. I’m new to Linux, and ended up following SomeOrdinaryGamer’s guide for setting up Linux mint 21.3 with the Cinnamon DE. I’ve been really enjoying how easy and usable it is with the exception of *literally anything not included in the software manager app* For example, I tried to download an indie game on itch.io that runs natively on Linux. I follow the instructions on the site which was to extract the folder and simply run the file, but when I do that it asks me what app I want to launch it with. How am I supposed to know? It was a .ags file. I wish I could say this is the only time it’s happened but it’s not. I tried to install openrgb, again it asks me what app I want to open the file with. I have no clue. I’m used to just clicking on applications and having windows open it with whatever makes sense without input from me. What am I missing here? I just don’t understand how your average joe like me is supposed to have all of these things to open up different files on tap without knowing anything about what should be required. Do I need to update my software manager? Do I need to install some packages? I have no idea. I want to continue my overall good experience so far on Linux but this is particularly frustrating since I feel like I’m basically not able to do anything that’s not in the included software manager.
  4. That’s definitely a fan rubbing, try unplugging them one by one until you find the one being problematic. I had that happen to me once.
  5. I personally wouldn't go for aesthetics when you're on such a tight budget, you can always start with a cheap air cooler and add the AIO later. You do you though, that's just my two cents.
  6. Ended up doing this, all is well. Thanks for your help.
  7. The AIO seems extremely overkill for a 65 watt CPU. I would save that money and use it for more storage and use a budget friendly air cooler. (I personally recommend the ID Cooling A400 which I'm using on a 65 watt CPU right now). Other than that, for your use case I think the build looks good but keep in mind that the RX 580 (While a great GPU) will probably not be supported for drivers a while into the future if you plan on using this build for a long while, so if you could stay within your budget and get something from the RX 5000 series that may be a better option. You didn't include prices in your config, but I am seeing used RX 5600XT's on ebay for around $130 USD.
  8. I think I will try this. I have about 600GB of games on that drive that I don’t want to have to reinstall but I also don’t have space to move onto my secondary.
  9. I happen to have recent experience doing a small budget PC ($150). I ended up with a small form factor dell optiplex with an i3 8100 (earliest officially supported generation for Windows 11) for $95 that came with a hard drive and 8 gigs of ram. I ended up with a low profile RX 550 which I got on ebay for $45. If you have a $400 budget, you should go for a full size tower so you don’t have the low profile GPU requirement, and add a solid used GPU like an RX 580 or 1660 Ti. This should be very doable for probably even under your budget, and you can use whatever’s extra to add storage and more ram if it could use it or even to get a higher end GPU. Just make sure it has a decent power supply and I would caution you to not use those SATA to 6 pin adapters to make it work. If you have to, cut some budget for a PSU upgrade. If you want any other ideas feel free to message me I am more than willing to help you find a good configuration that fits in your budget.
  10. Whoa there buster. 400 bucks is enough to build a pretty solid cheap PC. My first was a GTX 1050 and Pentium G4560 that I built for about 400 bucks and it was a great entry point for me into this hobby and for the time wasn’t even that bad for playing at 1080p medium settings. Right now I’m working on a project using an old SFF office PC and upgrading it into a small gaming pc I can take to LAN’s, and it came to about $150. Having a lot of money is not a requirement to getting into PC gaming. I for one would be over the moon if someone gifted me a PC at all let alone one that they put together to the best of their abilities to get me a good gaming experience.
  11. Is it possible to just create new EFI and recovery partitions? I can live with the duplicate ones if it means not having to reinstall windows.
  12. Shame on me, I didn’t know about the apparently common bug that does this when installing windows with multiple drives installed. My main system partition is on my primary SSD where I want it to be. My EFI boot partition is on my secondary SSD My recovery partition is on my 7 old HDD that’s probably a year or two out from failure. Ideally I would like all of these partitions on the previously mentioned primary SSD. Is there any easy way to move those partitions or create new ones for my main SSD? I really would prefer to not have to reinstall windows. I am using Windows 11, and otherwise my system is behaving completely normally. I just would really like this fixed.
  13. I'd imagine it depends based on mods/settings as well as if it's bedrock or java
  14. It is the included fan. As far as consistency, not really. I ended up taking it off and re mounting it and it makes the noise less frequently but it was very audible, almost like a grinding sound. It seemed like no matter the fan curve it would rattle at some point or another, I ended up just ordering a Noctua fan to attach to it. It's worth mentioning, it seems that the house is almost a metallic type sound, which initially made me think it could be vibrating against the tower part of the cooler but it has rubber anti vibration pads and it also wouldn't make much sense for it to only do that at random RPM's low and high.
  15. This happened to my friends PC, it ended up being that the RAM wasn't properly seated. Try removing it and putting it back in.
  16. Sorry I have dummy brain, does this mean that if I run it at a higher speed for a while and then go back to a lower speed, it may be lubricated enough that it will not make the noise anymore?
  17. Okay good to know. Yeah, it's my CPU fan on the Vetroo V5. As soon as the build was complete I noticed it rattled and it made me crazy so I had to adjust the fan curve. Thanks for the info
  18. What the title says, one of my fans slightly rattles at lower speeds so I started running it at 60% speed minimum so it would stop. Is this alright? I also have one of my case fans running at 100% all the time. I don't mind the whoooosh noise at all. Update: the whoosh turned back into a grinding sound and I replaced the fan with a Noctua fan and it's fixed.
  19. The integrated graphics on the 12400 will be much better, and has modern DirectX support as well.
  20. I notice you don't have an exhaust fan, that might be worth looking into. You are probably keeping a lot of hot air in your case.
  21. Thank you, I used this for my new build last night and everything is running smoothly. CPU is 28⁰C at idle.
  22. I am using the LGA 1200 socket. Just 1 turn on each screw after you get it past no force?
  23. Hey, I am building a new PC on Wednesday, and I am unsure as to how tight I need to tighten a tower style cooler. I want to make sure I don't damage the pins in the socket by overtightening. How tight should I tighten to make sure I still get good cooling but I don't damage anything? I have never used a cooler besides the stock cooler before. If it matters, I am going to be using the Vetroo V5
  24. I will try different ones, though it would be odd for them both to cut out at the same time
