  1. Hi there, I built a new desktop pc a few weeks ago, and everything's fine and dandy, except a few hiccups I can't really solve/explain. - Sometimes when I turn it on, it powers up (mobo led lights up, cpu fan is buzzing) but it's not going any further, no picture whatsoever. - When I want to get into the UEFI or boot menu, and I start hitting the function keys before the monitor gets some input, it's giving me the blank (black) screen again. - Same when sometimes I want to boot from a usb drive. - Various UEFI- and kernel-related difficulties with Linux (it might be just software-related, because it's the latest generation motherboard, so devs might need some time to catch up). I went through all the settings in the firmware, and nothing helped so far. Could it be a faulty motherboard or a dodgy case (button or usb-connections)?
  2. It's the CMOS battery, I was just blinded by the rage caused by those beeps. It's all good and dead-silent now.
  3. Thanks for the advice. Turns out the PC speaker is built into the normal speakers, so I just disconnected the whole thing, and now I can enjoy perfect silence while in the terminal.
  4. I'm trying to mess around in a console-based Linux, so no gui. But my Dell laptop keeps beeping for simple things like hitting an enter and such. It wouldn't be such a big issue, but it's kind of unpredictable sometimes, and it's so loud that probably even my neighbours can hear it. In short, it's giving me jumpscares, I don't fancy it, and don't want to hear this sound ever again in my life. I found a round black thingy attached to the motherboard with a few cables. Is that it? There's no way it's coming from the speakers, it's so loud. Oh, and there's no way to turn it off in the bios, so..
  5. I'm about to buy a power adapter, and the first one is a 150w FSP, the other one would be a Leicke with the same specs but now for half the price. Which brand produces overall better quality and more reliable products?
  6. Turns out the noname adapter on the website is an FSP one. But I've just found a Leicke on amazon with the exact same specs for half the price. Which make do you think is better quality and more reliable?
  7. Okay, the mobo supports it, so that's a relief. But Intel's website says "DDR4-2400" at the supported memory type.
  8. I ordered a 2666mhz DDR4, but I soon realized that the i3 8100 only supports memory up to 2400mhz. Is it gonna work? Or should I cancel the order and get a 2400mhz one? It's not much cheaper.
  9. Thanks, I'll look for some other options. That Antec case looks great, and it's a standing one, so that's a big plus. I've just read some forum discussions on cpu power consumption, and I'm not sure how much the i3 would eat under heavy/full load. I'm a bit concerned, because it's almost as powerful as my desktop i7 6700. And some processors with 55-65w tdp can go up to 110-120 under heavy load. That would be pushing a 150-160w supply, wouldn't it? I know there's a little wiggle room when it comes to power ratings, but I like to be 99% sure the system I build is stable.
  10. Yeah, ventilation is something I'm a bit concerned about too, because even if there's enough airflow inside, there should be at least one fan moving air outwards. I'm thinking about getting an even lower profile cooler like this one. But why does it say "thin mini-itx only?" If it fits the smaller "thin" case, it should fit the larger mini-itx as well, right?
  11. I was drawing inspiration partly from this little computer when I decided to build my mini-itx pc. Now, the case and the cpu fan will be the same in mine too. But with an i3 8100, which is far more powerful than the one in the video. Can the Noctua CPU fan alone cool the entire interior of the chassis? I mean it kind of covers almost everything inside, so I couldn't put in any more fans even if I wanted to.
  12. Thanks for the quick answer, I'll skip the no-name adapter then.
  13. I'm building a mini-itx Linux pc to play with, and I'm still lost at choosing the power supply. The cpu is an i3 8100. Other than that, just a sata ssd and an nvme ssd, a 40mm fan, and a noctua cpu cooler. Strangely enough all the psu calculators keep telling me I should get at least a 200w psu. My laptop with a core i7 and and a gtx 1050ti is just fine with its 130w brick, so I cant see why i should get anything larger than 150w for this tiny pc. (I know I know, laptops are more power-efficient, but still). The picopsu I'd like to buy is this 150w one. Would it be suitable for my setup? Also I need a power brick for this psu, and there's one with a 2.5/5.5mm jack and one with an - apparently more robust - 4-pin connector. What's the difference from a practical standpoint? Thanks!
  14. Hi, I'm planning to use some Linux distro alongside Windows. Everything's fine and dandy except that the wireless chip on my mobo for Linux and other Unix-like systems. I have three other usb wifi dongles, and they're all acting up on anything other than Windows. I'm going for the safest and easiest option: connecting some wifi adapter through an ethernet cable. Now I'm not sure what it's called, but I found a few devices that might work this. So again, I have a router downstairs, and I want the adapter to connect to that one, and communicate with my computer through an ethernet cable. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Universal-Extender-Broadband-Ethernet-TL-WA850RE/dp/B00AHXXJVW/ https://www.amazon.co.uk/RE200-Universal-Extender-Broadband-Indicator/dp/B00KVD6CJY/ https://www.amazon.co.uk/NETGEAR-Extender-External-Antennas-EX2700-100UKS/dp/B00NIUHAG6 What am I exactly looking for? Are any of these capable of doing what I want? Or they only work the other way around (eg. router to adapter through ethernet, adapter to pc through wifi)
