  1. You are all set; I don't think you'll have any problem at all!
  2. Sometimes reboot the computer one more time would fix the problem. You can also go to "Device Manager" in "Systems" and click the icon for "Scan for Hardware Changes" to see if it helps.
  3. I don't think that is true. WD Red is a NAS drive, which means that it is more vibration-resistant; otherwise, I would imagine that the vibration it produces would be similar to any other 5400 rpm drives. While I never used WD Red, I do have 2 Seagate 4 TB NAS drive (5900 rpm) in my case active for more than 450 days now along with another 2.5" WD Black (7200 rpm) and never had a problem (HD Sentinel reported 100% health for all of them). Out of curiosity, which case do you have?
  4. Holy crap, I actually built my BOINC machine that is almost the same to this a few months ago (case, X99 mobo, exact CPU, and EVGA GPUs with minor mismatch LOL)! Specs for those who are interested: Case: Fractal Define R5 White with Window Mobo: ASRock X99 Extreme6 CPU: Xeon E5-2690 v3 12 cores @ 2.8 GHz CPU fan: PHANTEKS PH-TC14PE_BL 140 mm RAM: GSkill 4 GB x 4 Drive: Samsung 850 PRO 256 GB GPU 1: EVGA GTX 980 ACX 2.0 SC GPU 2: EVGA GTX 980 ACX 2.0 FTW Power: EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2
  5. @Altecice & Bonsai99: 1. If I go this route, what is the max transfer speed I can get? 2. The way I planned out is that if use a desktop to store the data, I can just plug in an external HDD or a USB drive if I need to take some volume of information with me (and work on my laptop while the files transfer). If I use a NAS drive, I would have to plug the external HDD into my laptop and get the files from NAS through my laptop (and through the network) before going into the external HDD, is that correct? 3. Also, can the NAS system scan the HDDs periodically to check for bad sectors? 4. Is there any particular model of NAS that you guys would recommend? @brob: Thanks for your suggestions. I will look into the components that you've suggested. One reason I picked out WD Red is due to their increased reliability to work in a more cramped, less ventilated space with potentially increased vibration (such as in a NAS system, or in my case, > 4 3.5" HDD in a desktop mini tower).
  6. @Altecice: I have thought about NAS, but I've read some very bad reviews for pretty much for all brands (and what they might do to the HDDs). Additionally, I'd like to be able to view/play/edit those files without attaching the whole storage to a laptop first; this is why I op for a desktop minitower instead of NAS. @xrex64: This would be a project I want to take on over the next month or so, so I'm going to buy the components over the next few weeks as I see the discounts. Thanks for the suggestion though! @Bonsai99: See above, you guys are replying way faster than I can reply 0.0. It's funny that a real life friend also suggested the same thing.
  7. Hello guys, I'm thinking of building a desktop mainly for storing general digital files (videos, music, MS Office documents, etc.). Below is the spec I'm thinking of building: Case: Fractal Design Define Mini MicroATX Mini Tower (I need the desktop to be as quiet as possible) CPU: i3-4130 CPU cooler: Masscool 8W5020F1M 51.2 CFM Motherboard: MSI Z87M-G43 MicroATX Memory: Corsair Vengeance 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3-1600 Power supply: Corsair Builder 600W OS: Windows 8.1 Pro Storage: Crucial M500 240GB (for OS, which will be backed up to an external HDD regularly) 4x WD Red 4TB 3.5" 5900RPM (for 2 RAID 1 arrays, going to start with 2 HDD for 1 array and building the other one later though.) My questions are: 1. Since this is the first time I build a desktop (been using laptops for a long time), do I need to buy a wifi receiver for wireless Internet? 2. Since I'm going to use an SSD for the OS and transfer files from my laptops via crossover cable most likely, is the CPU sufficient to run the OS smoothly? 3. As said in 2., other than a crossover cable, is there other ways that I can transfer files fast between the desktop and other laptops? 4. The reason I'm using Z87M-G43 mobo and the 600W power supply is that they both provide 6 SATA (III) connectors, which I think I'll eventually need them all. Obviously the power supply is an overkill, so I'm wondering is there any splitter I can use to split the power so I can use a lower wattage one? 5. Is there any way I can cut the unnecessary components to lower the cost of the build without compromising the performance? (According to PCpartPicker, with 4 WD Red it would cost about $1530, with 2 WD Red $1130 (each WD Red costs $200 and the desktop without them costs $730), I'm willing to spend as much as possible without compromising the performance but would be happy to cut any extra cost if possible) Here's a link to PCpartPicker site for the above build with 2 WD Red only: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/25CO8 (saw this site today because of this forum, you guys are awesome!) Thank you for reading this and/or providing any valuable suggestions! Edit: above prices are in USD.
