  1. Hello everyone, I'm looking to get a cheap 1440p monitor off Ebay. I've been looking at these, from dream-seller : http://www.ebay.com/sch/merchant/dream-seller?_nkw=x-star+dp2710&_sacat=&_ex_kw=&_mPrRngCbx=1&_udlo=&_udhi=&_sop=12 I'm wondering, what's the difference between the 'regular' and the 'Perfect Pixel' one? Is it worth the 30$ price difference? I have to stick with Matte display because there's a window right besides my desk. There's also 'Tempered glass' What's that? I didn't know it was this cheap, 300$ for 1440p monitor .. that's cool. I'm aware that it's a bit of a gamble, that there can be problems that wouldn't be covered by the warranty, but I'm also being told that monitors from X-Star and other similar brands have a decent CS and everything. What do you guys think of that? Regarding the quality of the picture, is there a big difference between the quality you'll get with this and what you would have a with a 600$ 1440P from Amazon/Newegg? (assuming both work as expected, without problems) Would you guys recommand that I save up and get a monitor from ASUS, Dell, etc, in a few months? Thanks a lot for the help and advices
  2. I leave mine on all the time, and it was like that for the past three years or so. It's made to run, not to sleep, so it's fine and I don't think it damages the components, or at least not significantly.
  3. @whatthe_fuzz @ciprian97pop This is what I was thinking of getting : PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($341.99 @ Amazon Canada) CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($29.99 @ NCIX) Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z87X-D3H ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($114.99 @ NCIX) Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($135.98 @ Newegg Canada) Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($105.98 @ Newegg Canada) Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($64.99 @ Amazon Canada) Video Card: Asus Radeon R9 280X 3GB Video Card ($333.63 @ Newegg Canada) Wireless Network Adapter: TP-Link TL-WDN4800 802.11a/b/g/n PCI-Express x1 Wi-Fi Adapter ($41.99 @ Newegg Canada) Case: Fractal Design Define R4 w/Window (Black Pearl) ATX Mid Tower Case ($119.99 @ NCIX) Power Supply: SeaSonic M12II 850W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($99.99 @ NCIX) Total: $1389.52 I read and watched some reviews about the Bitfenix Phenom and it doesn't look that great. Plus, ITX isn't really needed for me, I have plenty of space and I value silence more than portability. 850W PSU is overpowered but it's really cheap and will do fine if I want to add another 280X sometime in the future. I went for ASUS' 280X, because of all the great reviews and I know what to expect with them in terms of quality and CS. Is it a good choice? What do you guys think of that? What would you change/remove/add? I still have 110$ left in budget, I'd use this to get some good heaphones. Thanks!
  4. When is the 290 'scheduled' to be released? I'm looking to buy this weekend, I really need a new computer and I have a buyer for my current one, that won't wait too long .. the 280X looks like it outperforms the 770 or at least equals it in many games, so I might as well go for that. I'm not an hardcore gamer playing hyper demanding games. In my OP I did say that I wanted to max most games, but that's not Crysis or BF4. I think that a high-end, but not top-end card, like a 280X/7970 would do just fine. I'll make my own list from all your suggestions, using CAN prices and I'll show it to you I like the Impact motherboard, I don't mind the audio card but the intergrated wifi is cool, and that alone almost justifies the entire price difference between the Impact and other mITX motherboards. Thanks all for your help
  5. @whatthe_fuzz Thank you, but there's a slight problem, I'm in Canada and your list is made using the US retailers. Unfortunetly the prices aren't the same, and a conversion end up being 1800$+, which is over my budget. I like the idea of mITX, I'll go watch some reviews on the Phenom case but it definitely looks like an interesting build. I've heard nothing but good thing about the Swiftech H220, however, I'm not too sure that it will be useful in this case. Unless I'm quite lucky with the silicon lottery, I don't think that I'll be able to OC my Haswell chip to the point where are 130$ CPU cooler is justified. Since I'm mostly concerned by noise, would a 212EVO be a good alternative? (I know it's quite cheaper, but I don't think I will push my chip to the point where it won't suffice, what do you think?) Thanks for your help, it's very appreciated.
  6. Good morning everyone (or afternoon, evening, night) It's time for me to upgrade my build. Since I got a new job a few weeks ago I managed to gather enough money to dedicate to a new computer. About time! Budget and location : 1500$ (CAN), I'm located in eastern Canada. I don't mind ordering from any of the main retailers, even 'less popular' ones like Vuugo, etc. Aim : The primary goal is something that will run today's games in nearly maxed settings, and that will allow me to efficiently work on my 3D and video projects. I also want something silent. Noise was my biggest issue with my current computer, and I want something that is whisper quiet because I will be working a lot on it, and I don't always wear headphones. Monitors : My main display is a 1080p monitor, and I might add a second one sometime later this year. I will still use only one for gaming, the other would be dedicated to Skype, Chrome, LTT, etc. Periphericals : I already have everything but a wifi card. I unfortunetly need one, oh well. If there is some budget remaining in the 1500$ I'd like to get some decent headphones, if you guys manage to make a build for like 1300-1400$, it would be awesome to dedicate 100-150$ to a very good and comfortable set of headphones. Not mandatory though. Why are you upgrading : I currently have an outdated GPU, a too low amount of RAM that is at a too low frequency, and an i5 CPU. It got the job done for gaming, but now that I'm doing more and more modeling, editing and rendering, an i7 with 16Gb of RAM will definitely be handy. So that's it, I already have a copy of Windows 8 so I don't need that. All I need is the computer, including a wifi card, and maybe some good headphones if the budget allows it. I don't mind the use of mail rebates, but I would like to avoid them as much as possible. I was thinking of 4770K + 280X, what do you guys think of that? Not too sure which model to go for, I like the Gigabyte and ASUS ones, but from what I read in the reviews they can get noisy. Would the noise be still important in a silent optimized case like the Define R4 (example) ? I know it's tough to judge since the 280X was released not long ago, but we never know. What would you guys recommand for me? Thank you all very much for your help, it's extremely appreciated.
  7. I don't know if you like that more than Google Glass or not lol
  8. You have a 290X that runs at 94C, that's stock AFAIK. So yes, it's perfectly fine, as ShadyHost said they are meant to run hot, hotter than that
  9. Getting a 550$ GPU to use for sound .. yeah sure, why not. What else would you be using it for? They couldn't work together in SLI/CF (or .. CLI?) for better performance in games, so it's just a waste of money. Invest that money on a sound card, good headphones and speakers if you want to
  10. I agree with @NohbdyKnows , I think that a custom WC should be the last item on your buy list. A custom WC doesn't achieve much in terms of performance, compared to what a GPU upgrade or SSD (if you don't have one) could do. I guess it depends what games you play, 7870 might be just fine, but still. When I see a custom WC with a somewhat lower-end (still high end) GPU and everything, it screams poorly invested money. @Epikas If cooling is that much of an issue then it can be worth it, but if you're really struggling that much with temperature, with a good CPU cooler like Noctua's one and everything, then there might be other problems and a custom WC won't bring your temp down that dramatically.
  11. Short answer, yes Long answer, still yes For that price, it's definitely worth it IMO
  12. Interesting theory, I'm not a big fan of the new naming scheme either, but I guess it was the time to change, coming close to HD10xxx =P You have a good point, people are still recommanding the 7970 over the 280X if it's cheaper, but we don't see anyone recommanding a 680 instead of the 770, even though they are also very similar cards.
