  1. For basic learning Visual Studio should be fine for C but it only just became compatible with the C99 standard (though not entirely, according to this some functions are still missing: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/vcblog/archive/2013/07/19/c99-library-support-in-visual-studio-2013.aspx) so it's rather behind if you want to learn the language in depth. Otherwise get GCC (there are Windows versions) and use something like Notepad++ to write your code (you can also set up Notepad++ to compile it for you).
  2. Yeah, it's usually due to the volume and power rocker buttons shaking... Most people RMA them, Google doesn't seem to be to fussy about it. These threads as XDA developers should give you some more info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2509455 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2515575
  3. Other than the "it's a phone" replies, the screen is supposed to have better colour reproduction, but the SOC is worse than the one in the Nexus 5 (it's basically the same as the one in the Nexus 4 ie what's basically a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 vs 800) so the Nexus 5 will actually out-perform it in pretty much anything (when it isn't being throttled) except battery life.
  4. Actually, it is not legal to install Mac OS X on non-Apple hardware (but a vitrual machine is OK as of 10.8) as per the EULA (see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSx86) though I don't think Apple will crack down on enthusiasts making hackintoshes just yet
