  1. I'm looking at this: https://www.gamersnexus.net/hwreviews/3489-amd-ryzen-5-3600-cpu-review-benchmarks-vs-intel I imagine an overclock would put the 8700k much higher.
  2. The R5 3600 is on par with the i7-8700k? I thought the 8700k at stock was still beating all of Ryzen in gaming?
  3. Help me understand this, please. For the z390, I can upgrade to a 9900k in the future, if I want more performance and more cores. So I have an upgrade path. Also, the 3600 would just be upgraded to a 4600. Then after that maybe a 5600 if its supported and probably anything beyond that won't be supported. But unless the 4600 or 5600 surpasses the performance of the 8700k or 9900k, it doesn't wouldn't matter about the age, just performance. In any situation, I am locking myself to a platform. How is it being alive or dead an issue if performance is what matters? I'd like to understand this.
  4. Oh. I thought those used lanes to communicate with the cpu. Thank you. Another question, if you all don't mind. Due to price, I was about to grab the 3600 with that gigabyte board, but I found a deal for an i7-8700k with a z390 Taichi board. It would be about the same price as the 3600 cpu and board. I imagine I could get that to 5ghz, having better gaming performance than the 3600, even if I eventually grab a 2080, 3060 or 3070 in the future. But not sure. Was hoping to get opinions on that board, cpu and price.
  5. Know anything about the EVGA z490 ftw? I am a fan of how easy their rma process is (dealt with a GPU and PSU). That and several connectors that are normally straight, are right angle on that board. Connectors that I've always said should be right angle like front I/o.
  6. That MSI board.... Are those debug LEDs? Is it weird that I feel like I am betraying someone by considering Intel? I feel like I am falling to the dark side, disappointing my Jedi master as the hate for my first gen ryzen boards grows... Causing my rgb to shift from green to red. I feel like I'm betraying the PC community by supporting Intel and their ways... But getting a 5ghz (or higher) stable OC....
  7. Ive heard about that before. But given that I've heard great things from Asus, yet my last two boards (both asus) have had stability issues after only a year in... Plus my very first system was an i7-930 with a gigabyte board. And I loved that system. Only parted it and sold it off to help pay for my Ryzen first gen build. The only reason I'd go RTX 3070 would be if there is a competitive game that comes out and I needed it to get 144 fps. At that time, I may either do another CPU/MOBO upgrade or just be able to upgrade to a Ryzen 4000 (or maybe 5000) series CPU. The intel seems like it would be good if I don't want to deal with anymore upgrades besides more ram and gpu. That's tempting, as that was how my first build was for so very long. But the price (and intel's behavior/policies) make it a hard pill to swallow. But then I think about getting a 5GHz+ stable OC like I've always dreamed and my mouth waters. lol I just don't know yet. I'm going back and forth. You guys are helping though. I'm now wondering what the cheapest, but still good, z490 board would be. Just to compare it with the price of 3600 and the mobos recommended here.
  8. I don't want to touch x570. That chipset fan screams point of failure to me. I will have to look into the dual bios issue. Never heard of that before. I guess if the Pro has those non-code leds, that could still be fine... maybe. Makes me unsure, but it is $100 less. For reference, what is the lowest price z490 board that is still good? Trying to weigh all my options. Ideally not Asus. My last two boards were Asus and I need a break from them...
  9. I just watched an LTT video where Intel denied an RMA due to "overclocking" the ram to its rated speed and timings... Which kind of pisses me off so much, I am leaning back towards going 3600 (non-xt) and grab a b550. Why is the Aorus Master a bad purchase? I added those boards because I forgot that I want debug code readers. That is the only reason.
  10. I've done stock on the ram. As in the 2133 or whatever it is, which I think is the most conserved it can get. The system also doesn't post with a single stick in any dimm for the corsair ram. For the tridentz, it only posts when one stick is used, not two. Also ran memtest on the system's ram (but in the media PC I have) and passed. Problem is 100% not either kit of memory or the CPU.
  11. I'm two boards down now. I have a bad taste in my mouth for first gen boards and Asus (both were asus). The lanes I am unsure about. I have 3 HDDs and 2 SSDs attached to my system, plus a corsair lighting nod. Besides USB devices like gaming keyboard, gaming mouse, wireless headset, mic, webcam and whatever else may be added in the future, I am unsure how many lanes I actually need. I originally wanted more for all the USB devices I had plugged in for VR but that isn't an issue with this board anymore. They were an issue on my b350-f, but not on this board. I think you are right about the XT. Someone else pointed out Zen3 is coming out in a few months. So it would be cheaper right now and easier to flip a 3600 and grab a 4600 later, if I wanted to. I just wish the b550 could operate with a 2700x. It would make everything so much easier right now. But needing to upgrade my CPU is making the intel option an option. In either case, my wife is going to be very annoyed with me.
  12. Just realized both boards I put didn't have debug code displays. With what I've dealt with, I feel it is a must. So I edited the original post to add in the next tier mobo up that has them.
  13. Tried two different memory kits. A 2x8gb kit of Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 3200 (tried at stock and rated speeds), as well as a 2x8gb kit of TridentZ 3466. I've also switched out the CPU with a 1600AF. Its definitely down to the PSU and mobo.
  14. GPU is ruled out. PSU has not been replaced yet. But I thought, per the issues with the memory (1 stick vs 2 sticks of two different sets) that the problem was related to a memory controller issue? And that would be either CPU, RAM or MOBO. Since RAM and CPU check out, I thought that leaves the mobo as the only remaining option. I need to weigh my options now. I am going to plan as thought its the mobo while the RMA PSU unit is in the mail. As soon as I get the PSU, I'll slap it in and double check. I will let you know if what happens. Thank you so much for the help. I owe you.
  15. 1440p gaming isn't in the cards for at least another two years for me. Why do you recommend another z490 board? The reason I was looking at that were the proper fin array heatsink on the VRMs. System is not running at all right now. Been dealing with problems for almost a year now and finally the system crashes right away. With my living condition, I need my gaming outlet every few days. So waiting on Zen3 isn't really an option. However Zen 3 is another reason to possibly go with the 3600 instead of the xt. The B550 should be able to handle a Ryzen 4xxx CPU with a bios update. So then I resell the 3600 once a 4600 comes out. I did that exact same thing with my 1700x and 2700x. My mobo was having instability issues (wasn't fully crashing consistently like my system is now). The flip made it so my upgrade only cost me around $50 in the end. Missed this question before. I have an EVGA G3 850w PSU and a Asus x370 Crosshair VI Hero AC/WIFI mobo.
  16. That's a $200+ board from what I see. Makes more sense to upgrade to a newer board and CPU. Then I can sell the 2700x to recoup some of the cost.
  17. I currently have a Ryzen 2700x. Before this I had a 1700x and before that I had an i7-930. I have had so much trouble with the 2700x and 1700x over the years. Both were linked to the motherboards. The current issues have been narrowed down to motherboard or PSU and I am planning for if it is the motherboard (again). I refuse to get another 1st gen Ryzen board. When I look at x470 and b450, I am not liking what I am seeing is available. So another option is to go B550 (I refuse to go X570 as I don't want that chipset fan). But my 2700x won't work on a B550, so I would have to grab another CPU. However this brings me to a price point that makes an Intel option appealing. I loved my old i7-930. It was my first build and I never had issues with the mobo or cpu. Everything was solid and just worked. This adds to the temptation of grabbing an i5-10600k. I've also always dreamed of OCing a CPU to 5GHz stable, which again adds to the temptation. Especially since OCing on AMD isn't a rewarding thing to do. What deters me are the less lanes and practices of Intel. A part of me doesn't want to support them. I feel like a betrayed fanboy from back in the day. I mainly game on this PC. Games like Apex Legends (or other BRs), Rust, MMOs, etc. I have a 144hz monitor for those competitive games like Apex. I also have fun live streaming from time to time. The PC is also used by my wife to teach remotely (video calls). I also use the PC for school, mainly zoom or whatever video conferencing application in this instance. I do some very light 2D and 3D art. The 2700x has been good (when there wasn't stability issues going on), but I have wanted a bit more power when playing Apex Legends or Warzone. I also have been thinking the 8 cores is more than I actually need. And if games in the future need more cores, I can just upgrade at that point. I am running a GTX 1080, 280mm rad aio, 250 m.2 NVMe 960 EVO SSD, 1tb sata ssd, 1tb HDD and 16gb 3200 ram, with the current system that'll be placed with these parts. Here is the intel cpu and mobo I was looking at: https://www.newegg.com/intel-core-i5-10600k-core-i5-10th-gen/p/N82E16819118124?Item=9SIA12KBF24976 https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16813145194?Item=N82E16813145194 or https://www.newegg.com/evga-z490-ftw-wifi-122-cl-e497-kr/p/N82E16813188201?&quicklink=true https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16813145195?Item=N82E16813145195 (edited to replace option with this) And here is the AMD option I was looking at: https://www.newegg.com/amd-ryzen-5-3600xt-ryzen-5-3rd-gen/p/N82E16819113653?Item=N82E16819113653 https://www.newegg.com/gigabyte-b550-aorus-pro-ac/p/N82E16813145216?Item=N82E16813145216 https://www.newegg.com/gigabyte-b550-aorus-master/p/N82E16813145217?Item=N82E16813145217 (edited to replace option with this) I'd love some POVs on the two options here.
  18. Game crashed as soon as map loaded. Problem is not with the CPU. So I need to swap the PSU and if that doesn't fix the issues, its for sure mobo?
  19. I originally got this board because of the number of USB ports and sata ports. This was going to be my everything machine from normal fps gaming to VR, to school and projects. But the wife keeps using my office as a storage room. Instead of fighting it, I got her to agree for VR to be moved into the living room where there is more space. So I don't need as many ports on my current system. However I do like to have the option to OC. With previous builds, I would take the time to play with overclocking over the summer or something. I wouldn't leave it on, but just run it to get some firestrike scores or something. Plus, I imagine the boost headroom is increased by having the overclockability (on amd). I also thought the quality of the board would be better than my previous b350-f board. ---------------------- Was bored during lecture and swapped the CPU. I put one stick of the original ram in, knowing it wasn't booting before with a single stick. It booted up right away. What I should have done was try to boot it with the original cpu instead. It could be the issue is gone for right now. Going to run some benchmarks and see if the system goes unstable again.
  20. Yeah, I Am conflicted to whether I want to grab a 2nd gen board like x470/b450, (which is fine with a 2700x) or if I want to go b550 (which would require a cpu upgrade to use). I am also so frustrated by all this, I am tempted to go Intel again, grabbing an i5-10600k. Don't know yet. If the problem is my cpu, my board can handle a 3rd gen ryzen, so I'd probably do that. Memtest came out completely green. I'll swap CPUs after class.
  21. Will do. Memtest is still running, so the CPU swap is going to be tomorrow. I also just found out my mobo is still under warranty. So if that is the problem, I'm apparently covered. I'll use this thread as reference for when they start asking me what I've done to narrow the problem down to the motherboard. I'd also be tempted to upgrade to a x470 and resell the replacement x370. I feel like avoiding first gen ryzen boards like the plague at this point. Assuming the problem is the mobo.
  22. Running memtest on the other system with the original ram now. For the HDDs, I was originally thinking PSU and talked myself out of it. Then talked myself into thinking it was the MOBO. I have heard about the lower quality first gen Ryzen boards being an issue and I've experienced this myself. My original motherboard was an Asus b350-f gaming motherboard. I was thinking it was an issue with Asus and their faith in AMD, but just recently there was a Jayz Two Cents video where he talks about the low qualify of the first gen ryzen boards. Both the previous board and this one were fine for a little over a year before they were messing up. Very good actually. The media PC is a Ryzen 1600AF. After the memtest is done, I can swap them around. But the mobo posts with one stick of the TridentZ I took from the media pc (not both) and will post with two sticks of the corsair vengeance pro rgb it normally has in it (but not a single stick config). As for warranty, I'll have to check what Asus' warranty period is on this damned thing.
  23. Nevermind! It is not the ram! While one stick of the other ram had it booting, two sticks of this ram resulted in the same 8 and blank code I was getting with the previous 1 stick of ram. So this narrows it to CPU or Motherboard??
