  1. I would have to put my vote on PrivateInternetAccess it's fast and safe.
  2. Your printer should run fine over powerline but your HTPC will not. Is running some Ethernet cables to the living room out of the question?
  3. I would recommend powerline over wireless, its (usually) will have less interference from the environment/other devices. Also depending on the type of powerline adapter you can get a higher bandwidth connection for your internal network. When you are transferring files between computers, a wired connection will also usually outperform wireless connections especially on multiply smaller files. It really depends on your use case. If you are just using the internet and maybe the odd file transfer a month go wifi and don't worry about spending the money. If you do a lot of file transfers between computers on your network. You will probably benefit more from a wire connection. That being said, ensure that your router and computer are connected to the same power circuit in your house, otherwise a powerline adapter will not work.
  4. What is the macs HDD format? FAT32? How big is the file you are trying to transfer? If you are trying to copy a file larger then 4gb to a FAT32 HDD it will fail as FAT32 cannot store files larger the 4gb.
  5. I don't know if it will auto configure itself.. You will need to plug your new router into your old modem/router and then configure the old modem router to either NAT (not recommended) or bridge connection between the two. Essentially turning your old modem/router into a modem only.
  6. First off. What is the actual problem? Is the wifi adapter not being recognised by the os? Or is it not connecting to your home network? What os are you using?
  7. I never said you do not need an anti virus. I said common sense is very much needed. I'll say this right now. YES you do need antivirus software on your computer. Preferably one with real time scanning. That being said we were talking about windows 8. Now unless he disabled it. Microsoft security essentials is installed and enabled by default. MSE is a pretty darn good scanner for one that is free. If you want a better virus scanner you should look at some of the paid solutions. Kaspersky and McAfee. Ect.
  8. For ram checking I suggest memtest86+. Great livecd ram checker. http://www.memtest.org/ Try reseating your ram a few times. Try swapping hard drives if possible too.
  9. Try booting into safe mode. From there you can disable the loading "splash screen", when you restart you will see a list of drivers and such that are being loaded on boot. Take a look at what is trying to load when it hangs.
  10. I would download the drivers for your gfx card from AMDs website, rather then Asus.
  11. This error does not look like a standard chrome error. This could be server sided.
  12. Try taking a look at http://www.opendns.com/ and see if this fits your needs.
  13. Just to clarify, is you set up like so: Modem>Router/WirlessAP? It will not matter what way you connect to your router, you will still need to port forward. This is because your router is performing NAT to pass information between your internal network to your ISP. If you really are sick of port forwarding you could set up your computer to be the DMZ. This means ALL ports from your router will be forwarded to you pc. This can pose security risks however so ensure you have a firewall configured on your pc.
  14. Adobe Premiere Pro is Adobes Professional Video Editing Software. Adobe After Effects is Adobes Professional "CGI" Software. Of course if Premiere Pro is too complex for your tastes, you can also try Adobe Premiere Elements which is like a watered down easier to use edition.
  15. Just like everyone else said. Common sense is the key, however if you feel like you would like that extra layer of protection Malwarebytes is fantastic.
