Are you talking motherboard + CPU, or just a motherboard?
If it's just a replacement motherboard, then it needs to have the proper socket for the CPU.
If it's a motherboard + CPU, I'd go for a newer Skylake build. But, note that the Z170 is designed for overclocking. Very few people risk overclocking a workstation, if they rely on it for actual productivity, so a B150, H110, or H170 board would be just as good.
For a workstation, you might want to consider using one of the new Skylake based Xeons with an appropriate WS chipset.
You don't need a "WS" motherboard with like 6 or 7 PCIE slots and crapton of ports if you do video editing and engineering program
Just get something around $120 ~ $150ish for Z170 or sub $200 for X99
